Apple TV+ has ordered a series adaptation of Mick Herron’s “Down Cemetery Road” with Emma Thompson and Ruth Wilson attached to star, Variety has learned.
This is now the second adaptation of Herron’s books to get the series treatment at Apple, with the other being the popular spy series “Slow Horses” starring Gary Oldman. Morwenna Banks, who is a writer on “Slow Horses,” will serve as lead writer on “Down Cemetery Road.”
The official logline of the new series states, “When a house explodes in a quiet Oxford suburb and a girl disappears in the aftermath, neighbor Sarah Tucker (Wilson) becomes obsessed with finding her and enlists the help of private investigator Zoë Boehm (Thompson). Zoë and Sarah suddenly find themselves in a complex conspiracy that reveals that people long believed dead are still among the living, while the living are fast joining the dead.”

When Sam Taylor-Johnson started working on her Amy Winehouse biopic, Back to Black, she asked screenwriter Matt Greenhalgh to listen to one of Winehouse’s tracks, “Tears Dry on Their Own,” before he started writing. “I kept saying in those early days, ‘I feel like this song is our path to understanding her,’ ” Taylor-Johnson says.
In the deceptively upbeat single about Winehouse’s tumultuous relationship with her on-again, off-again love, Blake Fielder-Civil, she sings, “It’s my responsibility/And you don’t owe nothing to me.”
For Taylor-Johnson, 57, that line spoke to something largely misunderstood about Winehouse, the English singer who died of alcohol poisoning in 2011: Just 27, she left behind an outsize cultural impact. Winehouse’s defining album, Back to Black, sold more than 16 million copies worldwide, and her unique mix of jazz and soul with punk-era defiance would go on to influence artists like Adele, Lady Gaga and Billie Eilish.

Now that the BAFTA, Critics Choice, Golden Globe, and SAG Award nominations have all been announced, it’s time to take a closer look at what they all mean. Seven lead and six supporting performers reaped bids will all four of these precursor prizes (scroll down to see who’s on that list), but can they all count on hearing their names called when the Oscar nominations are unveiled on January 23?
Since the Critics Choice Awards joined the other three precursors in publicizing official nominations in 2002, there have been 11 instances when someone nominated across the board did not go on to contend at the Oscars. Given the lack of precedent for such an occurrence until 2012, the current hopefuls are unfortunately saddled with the implications of the adjusted average of about one case per year.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” has been named best picture by the National Board of Review, the organization announced on Wednesday.
Co-distributed by Apple Original Films and Paramount Pictures, the crime epic also nabbed prizes for director Martin Scorsese and actress Lily Gladstone. Scorsese’s win for directing is notable, as he is now tied with legendary filmmaker David Lean with four wins, the most of any director in NBR history. Interestingly, NBR has the least translation to an Oscar winner of all the major categories, the last being Scorsese for “The Departed” (2006).
Over the last 30 years, the winner of NBR’s best film has typically gone on to receive an Oscar nomination for best picture, except for once every decade — 2014’s “A Most Violent Year,” 2000’s “Quills” and 1998’s “Gods and Monsters.” In the 1980s, there were technically two misses with 1987’s “Empire of the Sun” and 1983’s “Betrayal,...

The Film Independent Spirit Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday, a day before the National Board of Review will weigh in on its selections for the best films and performances of 2023. They’ll be following the New York Film Critics Circle who kicked off the season last week by crowning Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” as its top choice. Its West Coast counterpart, Los Angeles Film Critics, will drop their choices on Sunday. Safe to say, the awards season is fully underway.

Emma Thompson has turned in a host of eclectic, effective, excellent performances throughout her illustrious career. She started out with period dramas such as “Howards End” and “The Remains of the Day” before later moving into fantasy with roles in “Nanny McPhee” and “Harry Potter.” Add to that top-tier performances in the likes of “Sense and Sensibility,” “Saving Mr. Banks,” “Cruella,” and “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande,” and you’ve got one hell of a performer.
However, Thompson has stated herself that the role she gets the most praise for is actually… “Love Actually.” The classic Richard Curtis Christmas movie, which turns 20 this year, tells the interconnected love stories of eight different sets of people with Thompson delivering the most emotional and heartbreaking storyline of all of them. Paul Giamatti turned in one of the best performances of 2004 in Alexander Payne‘s “Sideways.” He played Miles, a depressed writer who takes a trip to Santa Barbara County to celebrate his friend’s (Thomas Haden Church) engagement. He reap bids at the Critics Choice, SAG and Golden Globes awards. It was shock when he was snubbed at the Oscars in favor of eventual winner Jamie Foxx (“Ray”) plus Don Cheadle (“Hotel Rwanda”), Johnny Depp (“Finding Neverland”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Aviator”), and Clint Eastwood (“Million Dollar Baby”).
The academy can finally rectify that oversight as Giamatti and Payne have reunited for “The Holdovers,” which Focus Features is releasing on Oct. 27. Giamatti is a curmudgeon of a teacher forced to stay behind and look after students staying at his school throughout the holiday period. Dominic Sessa and Da’Vine Joy Randolph are great in supporting roles but it’s Giamatti who is the star of the picture.

Tom Hanks is one of the most decorated and beloved actors of all time, and he's also a husband, grandfather, and father of four. The two-time Oscar winner has played everyone from Walt Disney ("Saving Mr. Banks") and Mister Rogers ("A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood") to war heroes ("Saving Private Ryan" and "Forrest Gump") and Woody the pull-string cowboy rag doll (the Toy Story franchise).

Summer’s almost over, which means the start of the traditional TV season. And while the ongoing Hollywood double strike delayed production for scripted originals across the industry, there’s still an avalanche of new and returning shows coming to broadcast, cable and streaming services this fall.
While we’ll have to wait longer for the return of broadcast staples like the “One Chicago” franchise, “Young Sheldon” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” networks are planning to lean on banked originals (like NBC’s “Found” and “The Irrational”), unscripted staples like NBC’s “The Voice” (with new judge Reba McEntire) and “Dancing With the Stars” returning to ABC, international acquisitions (“Sullivan’s Crossing” on The CW) and even borrowing buzzworthy shows from sibling cable networks (“Yellowstone” airing on CBS). Hanks has built an impressive resume of biopics in his career, from Philadelphia to A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Although he was well aware of this reputation, when he was approached to play Walt Disney himself, he refused. Being Walt Disney would’ve been too much even for Hanks.
“The burden, you know. Honestly, the responsibility. I heard about it first from Tony. I think he’s head of physical production at Disney. But he and I executive produced and worked and created From The Earth to the Moon, Band of Brothers, The Pacific. We had done a lot of stuff.

Colin Farrell is a versatile Irish actor who has excelled in a variety of genres, from action films to dramas and from wild comedies to very very dark comedies.
Farrell has had the good fortune to work with many of the best directors out there, including Terence Malick and Steven Spielberg. Two writers/directors in particular have been instrumental in pushing Farrell to new artistic ground. Martin McDonagh directed Farrell to his first Golden Globe win (Best Actor for “In Bruges”), and Yorgos Lanthimos led Farrell to his second Best Actor Globe nomination, this time for “The Lobster.”
And most recently, he has received acclaim for “The Banshees of Inisherin” with his first Oscar nomination and become a DC villain in “The Batman.”

How do you find lasting love in today’s world? For documentary-maker and dating app addict Zoe (Lily James), swiping right has only delivered an endless stream of Mr Wrongs, to her eccentric mother Cath’s (Emma Thompson) dismay. For Zoe’s childhood friend and neighbour Kaz (Shazad Latif), the answer is to follow his parents’ example and opt for an arranged (or “assisted”) marriage to a bright and beautiful bride from Pakistan. As Zoe films his hopeful journey from London to Lahore to marry a stranger, chosen by his parents, she begins to wonder if she might have something to learn from a profoundly different approach to finding love.

Though details about the film are still cloaked in a black, interplanetary goo, there’s word from the Sony camp that Juno Temple will star opposite Tom Hardy in the third installment of the slightly deranged McU-adjacent “Spider-Man”-related trilogy. Michelle Williams was the romantic lead, Anne Weying, in the first two, which concluded with Hardy’s Eddie Brock/Venom and going their separate ways. It is unclear who the 33-year-old London-born Temple will be playing in the new installment, but Deadline reported her involvement.

A sports drama written and directed by Hancock, which brought Bullock her first Oscar, The Blind Side adapted Michael Lewis’ 2006 book of the same name, which told the story of Michael Oher, a homeless youth who rose to NFL glory with the help of the caring family that took him in as their own.
The Hancock-helmed The Founder starred Keaton as ruthless McDonald’s empire builder Ray Kroc, while the director’s Disney drama Saving Mr. Banks told the story of author P.L.

On the phone with IndieWire the day after the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards, there was not an ounce of cynicism in Colin Farrell’s voice. “I’d never been to the SAGs before. I’d never been nominated, I’d never been there as a presenter, I’ve never been in the room,” said “The Banshees of Inisherin” star, who was up for Best Actor and Best Ensemble that night. “I’ve been doing this [for] 25, 26 years or whatever, acting, so to find myself in the room last night, it’s really cool.”

If you've ever watched the red carpet at the Academy Awards there's a phrase you've probably heard over and over again, and for quite a few decades: "It's an honor just to be nominated."
And to be fair, it most certainly is. Although the Oscars were invented to bust unions, not reward artistic quality, at their best it's a gesture of support for a filmmaker from their peers. To be singled out by the other hard-working artisans in your branch as worthy of awards consideration as an actor, director, writer, cinematographer, sound designer et al is a great big feather in one's cap.
But it's a feather that can, and has been, plucked out. It's uncommon but the Academy Awards have vetoed quite a few nominations in the past — three times in the 2010s alone — in situations that stirred up controversy or, in some of the more technical or niche categories,...

Since beginning his career in the late 1990s, Irish actor Colin Farrell has been on a proverbial rollercoaster. Following a handful of early film and TV appearances, Farrell first gained the attention of Hollywood when he starred in Joel Schumacher’s 2000 war drama Tigerland. And his breakout role came in 2002 when he played Agent Danny Witwer in Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report. His excellent work, good looks, and onscreen charisma quickly positioned Farrell as a potentially huge leading man. But a string of moderate successes, outright failures, and mixed critical responses with films like Phone Booth, Daredevil, S.W.A.T., Miami Vice, and the universally derided Alexander cooled the actor’s jets for a while, while Farrell also rode out some personal relationship drama and a trip to rehab.
He came out the other end of that phase with more managed expectations, transitioning from standard leading man fare to more wide-ranging character...

For an awards season that is supposed to be back to normal, things don’t feel very normal as Oscar nominations approach.
In-person events are the norm, but Covid-19 lingers. Movies are in theaters, but often not for long — and the few monster hits can’t make up for the dozens of movies with mediocre box office returns. And the Academy, larger and more international than ever, is a giant question mark that seems likely to throw a lot of surprises at us when the nominees are unveiled on Tuesday morning in Los Angeles.
For now, here are our best guesses for who’ll come out on top in this anything-but-normal year.
Best Picture

The upcoming Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black” has unveiled a first look image of Marisa Abela in character as the Grammy-winning icon. The photo debuted as Studiocanal announced it was partnering with Focus Features and Monumental Pictures on the music drama. Sam Taylor-Johnson, best known for helming “50 Shades of Gray” and “Nowhere Boy,” is directing the biopic.
According to the studios, “Back to Black” will track “Amy Winehouse’s vibrant years living in London in the early aughts and her intense journey to fame.” Production on the movie kicks off Jan. 16 in London.
Variety exclusively reported in July that Abela had emerged as the frontrunner to play Winehouse in the biopic. Nearly twenty years ago, Oliver Stone set out to tell the life story of the ancient Macedonian general and king Alexander the Great. He assembled quite the all-star cast, including Angelina Jolie, Val Kilmer, Anthony Hopkins, Jared Leto, Rosario Dawson, Christopher Plummer, and more, with Colin Farrell starring as Alexander himself. While certainly ambitious, Alexander became a critical and commercial failure upon its release, which Colin Farrell didn’t see coming; In fact, he told THR during a roundtable discussion that the cast was ready for Oscar glory.
Expectation is a dangerous thing. Alexander was a story that Oliver Stone had dreamed of since he was in college. So, as grand as it was, as global as it was, as political as it was, as thrilling as it was, as violent as it was, and as sensual as it was, it was really personal — to Oliver and to me. It...

Most famous actors at some point must think of their legacy—what they’ll leave behind on the screen and how it will be seen. For Colin Farrell, it comes down to a short but diverse list.
In a new interview alongside Emma Thompson–who also co-starred in 2013’s Saving Mr. Banks but didn’t have any scenes together–Colin Farrell discussed what his legacy as an actor was.

At the virtual Sundance Film Festival in January and then again in June, Emma Thompson made the press rounds for her leading role in Searchlight Pictures’ “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande.” As usual, Thompson completely charmed her way through promoting her winning little indie picture, even with the expected media scrutiny of how “brave” she was to take on her role. (Male actors are rarely referred to as such when they play sixtysomething men who like sex.)
The performance, in which she portrays a sharp-minded but body-insecure widow who hires a sensitive, confident male escort (Daryl McCormack) on a quest for many kinds of fulfillment, earned Thompson some of the best reviews of a long and storied career that has often prompted journalists to use phrases like “a long and storied career.” She’s that good, that often. Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, as “The Whale” hits theaters, we reexamine Best Actor.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back at it again with our fingers ready to type about what seems like one of the most competitive acting categories of the year, even if Film Twitter doesn’t want to admit that’s the case. I’m typing, of course, about Best Actor, where Brendan Fraser has been the online pick of choice for months thanks to his performance in “The Whale.” But while Fraser has some compelling narrative juice as both a comeback performer and former beloved star of ’90s comfort food movies, neither one of us are convinced he’ll be the last man standing here. But maybe that’s putting the cart before the horse.

“Top Gun: Maverick” has been named best picture by the National Board of Review, the organization announced Thursday.
The big acting winners included Colin Farrell taking the best actor prize for “The Banshees of Inisherin” after coming off the New York Film Critics Circle win earlier this month. Two NBR winners in the last 12 years have translated to Oscar winners — Casey Affleck for “Manchester by the Sea” (2016) and Will Smith for “King Richard” (2021). For winners becoming eventual nominees, only three men were snubbed by the Academy in the end — Oscar Isaac for “A Most Violent Year” (2014), Tom Hanks for “The Post” (2017) and Adam Sandler for “Uncut Gems” (2019).
Michelle Yeoh gets a huge boost after being announced as Madame Morrible in the upcoming “Wicked” movies and featured on Variety’s Actors on Actors. She can now add NBR best actress winner to her golden day for her turn as laundromat owner...
