For those of us who religiously watch “Sex and the City” on whatever platform it is currently streaming on (hi), April 1 is an exciting day. That’s the day the popular HBO series starring Sarah Jessica Parker is coming to Netflix — for the very first time. And TBS reruns this is not: This is the full, unedited, groundbreaking show, now just waiting for viewers new and old to do a Netflix binge. (Paging Gen Z!)
Of course, there are plenty of other exciting TV shows and movies hitting Netflix in April 2024. Movie thrills include Jessica Chastain-starring “Molly’s Game” making its way back to the streamer, as well as perennial rom-com fave “You’ve Got Mail.” On the TV side, there’s new series “Dead Boy Detectives,” from showrunner Steve Yockey, and from the same universe as “The Sandman,” based on the beloved comic series from Neil Gaiman.

Prime Video got off to a fast start this summer with the release of The Boys season 3 on June 3. Now, as we enter the dog days, Prime Video is set to keep the warm weather good times rolling with a new twist on an old classic. That’s right, Amazon’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by some good old-fashioned baseball.
A League of Their Own, the TV adaptation of Penny Marshall’s 1992 movie, is set to premiere on Aug. 12. Like the movie before it, the series will dramatize the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League which saw women playing America’s pastime while the major leagues were on pause for World War II. Abbi Jacobson (Broad City) co-created the show and will star as catcher Carson Shaw.
Other Prime Video Originals of note this month include season 2 of British comedy The Outlaws on and the Ron Howard-directed Thirteen Lives,...

You ever notice how HBO’s releases tend to do the heavy lifting in HBO Max’s content library? That makes plenty of sense given that HBO has a track record of producing hits well before the streaming era even began. Well, a similar concept is now playing out over on Hulu. Like many monthly releases before it, Hulu’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by a whole bunch of FX TV shows.
The initiative once known as “FX on Hulu” is no more but that’s not stopping the cable network-turned quality TV brand from churning out some intriguing titles for the streaming world this month. It all starts early on with season 2 of the delightful comedy Reservation Dogs on Aug. 3. Amazon’s series version of “A League of Their Own” will debut its eight-episode first season on Aug. 12, introducing new characters and stories set in the historical opening of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League (Aagpbl).

While the first day of spring technically belongs to March, everyone knows that it kicks into high gear in April. To celebrate the changing of the seasons, Hulu is finally bringing back its signature original series for April 2021.
Season 4 of the multiple Emmy award-winning The Handmaid’s Tale premieres on April 28. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen June and her dystopian world. In fact, it’s been so long that our own world decided to endure its own dystopian pandemic in the meantime. Hopefully this series’ return will mean we can keep our political and social collapses on television where they belong.
Aside from The Handmaid’s Tale, Hulu isn’t brining much else to the table in terms of originals this month. Thankfully, the one other original that Hulu has in store for April sounds completely righteous. Sasquatch, the latest docuseries from the Duplass brothers producing team, will cover exactly what the title promises.

After going all out during an awards season in which the company was uniquely well-situated to run the table, Netflix is rolling into March with a release slate that doesn’t suggest the dawn of spring so much as it does a garage sale. Which isn’t to say that there aren’t any good movies dropping on the platform this month, only that few of them seem poised to make a big splash, and the ones that might (the Eric Andre prank comedy “Bad Trip” comes to mind) haven’t been made available to critics yet. That’s also true of the many international titles that will be made available to stream over the next few weeks, some of which seem promising (we have our eyes on the Olga Kurylenko “Taken” riff “Sentinelle”), but none of which have made an impression on the festival circuit.

The streaming wars are just as fiery and competitive as ever. Disney+ now has one Marvel TV show under its belt (WandaVision), with another one to come in March (The Falcon and The Winter Soldier). In response, Netflix is broadening its reach with its list of new releases for March 2021.
Netflix always features plenty of international options for viewers across the globe, but March is the first month where it seems as though international releases make up roughly half of Netflix’s originals. And that’s great! China’s The Yin Yang Master and Spain’s Coven of Sisters both look to be intriguing films this month.

Such is the question posed by Scott Speer’s “Endless” — and hopefully, no one else ever — a teen-centric interrogation of the possibility of life after death. Riley (Alexandra Shipp) and Chris (Nicholas Hamilton) don’t make much sense on paper, but the recent high school graduates are deeply in love, a point driven home during the film’s voiceover-heavy opening sequence, in which Riley expounds on their differences (she loves art! he likes motorcycles!) that somehow make them stronger.
Soon, however, they are torn apart, though not in the way Georgetown-bound Riley expects. Riley’s parents don’t dig Chris, and his panache for hauling off their just-graduated high schooler to college parties thrown by their friends (also recently graduated!) isn’t helping matters.
Tragedy strikes, and Chris — a sweet boy, but one defined entirely by his choice of vehicular transportation and leather jacket to match — is killed in a terrible accident.

There are two types of people in this world: People who love the “Step Up” movies, and people who haven’t seen them all. The franchise began as a straightforward teen romance in 2006 but quickly evolved into a series of lavish pop spectacles, propelled by cheesy melodrama and bolstered by elaborate dance choreography, performed by some of the greatest dancers in the world. As the films get crazier, so too does our love of the quirky cast and their over-the-top shenanigans; think “Fast & Furious,” if the franchise found its outlandish tone in the second film instead of the fifth. The sixth feature film in the series, “Step Up: Year of the Dance,” has just arrived on home video, so let’s take a look back at this whole, wonderful franchise:

Exclusive: Scott Speer, the director whose credits include Step Up Revolution, Til I See You and the Bella Thorne-Patrick Schwarzenegger romancer Midnight Sun, has come aboard to helm S21, a dark and edgy romantic comedy from Catapult Entertainment Group. The news is being announced at the American Film Market in Santa Monica, and a spring 2019 production start is being eyed.
Written by Greg Wayne, the plot of S21 is set in a not-so-distant future where clinically assisted suicide has become legal at age 21. A chance encounter in a clinic waiting room leads two lost souls to spend the final 24 hours of their lives together discovering the true meaning of life and death. Casting is underway.
Catapult’s Christopher Watkins and Kevin Goetz are producing with Charles Stiefel from Needle’s Eye, whose most recent tie-up A Violent Separation scored a North American distribution deal with Screen Media this week at Afm.

Everybody sees dead people in “I Still See You,” a slickly produced but none-too-scary thriller designed for that teen audience which prefers that its spooky Halloween fare involve cute guys of variable mortality fawning around a mildly misfit quirky-girl protagonist. If that sounds kinda “Twilight,” you’ve got that right — the source material is a standalone novel by Ya specialist Daniel Waters, whose “Generation Dead” series more or less substituted zombies for vampires in a similar supernatural teen romance saga.
Here, we have live boys and ghost boys alike fluttering around the suburban Goth flame of Bella Thorne in a movie that will no doubt play best to the book’s fans. Newcomers will find this adapted tale’s fantasy logic arbitrary, its plot convoluted, and the sum effect wildly unconvincing without being nearly so fun. Still, it’s given a suitably gauzy feel by director Scott Speer that will appeal to the target demo.

Exclusive: Peter Guber’s Mandalay Pictures has optioned Scott Speer’s screenplay Charlie 3D about the first fully, 3D-printed man and his search for identity and love. This project, which has one of the more cool and original premises, will be produced by the production company’s Jason Michael Berman. Novelist Tommy Wallach is coming aboard to do a production polish on the screenplay for an anticipated start later this year with Speer at the helm.
This is the first major project Speer and Berman have worked on together, though they have known each other for about a decade because they both went to USC School of Cinematic Arts and graduated only a couple of years apart. Although they worked together on small projects in college, this is their first feature film.

Poundland has been selling Blu-rays! And we've been buying and watching them! Tornado Warning, anyone?
I’ve covered the DVD section of Poundland before. I love it, even if I do only ever get around to watching about half of the discs I buy.
Unfortunately, hunting for DVDs in Poundland has become a bit of a dead sport. It’s partly because streaming services like Netflix have given us even easier access to weird films that might turn out to be rubbish. It’s also because Poundland have taken to stocking used DVDs, meaning they have a lot of big Hollywood films that are the same thing you could buy anywhere. That’s not what I go to Poundland for. I’m shopping for strangeness! Not only that, this Den of Geek writer has some very mild issues with germs and can’t really cope with touching second-hand DVDs.

I don’t think anyone would mistake So You Think You Can Dance‘s 12th season as its strongest — aside from viewers who were trapped in some sort of Footloose-esque, no-grooving-allowed nightmare for its first 11.
But while the Great Stage-Vs.-Street/Jason Derulo-Vs.-Descriptive-Adjectives Experiment of 2015 lacked something in diversity (whatever happened to ballroom and disco?), gut-busting emotional concepts (what I wouldn’t have given for one routine on par with “Addiction Dance“) and insightful critique (Mary Murphy and Misty Copeland, I missed you!), I’d be lying if I said summer TV still wasn’t the better for it.

Hailee Steinfeld will be haunted by a vengeful ghost in the adaptation of young adult novel Break My Heart 1000 Times.
Daniel Waters's novel brings to life a time when a breach between the spiritual world and our realm causes spirits known as Remnants to live alongside the living.
Steinfeld has the lead role in Break My Heart 1000 Times as a young girl who has no choice but to go on the run when threatened by one angry Remnant.
This adaptation of the hit young adult novel will be written by Ice Age: Continental Drift's Jason Fuchs, reports TheWrap.
Break My Heart 1000 Times' directing chair is being given to Step Up Revolution's Scott Speer for the first film in what could turn into a franchise.

No stranger to adaptations of novels, Hailee Steinfeld is making a deal to star in another. She’s leading the cast for a new film based on supernatural romantic young adult thriller Break My Heart 1,000 Times. Daniel Waters – not the one who wrote Heathers – is the author behind this one, creating the story of a world in which a cataclysmic event leaves the barrier between our world and that of the dead torn asunder. The result is ghost-like essences of the deceased known as “Remnants” becoming part of every day life. But after years of relatively peaceful life together, one of the Remnants sends a young woman (Steinfeld) a threatening message, spurring her on a mission that will change her life. Jason Fuchs wrote the adaptation and Step Up Revolution director Scott Speer is aboard to call the shots in what Gold Circle Films hopes will be a franchise-spawning movie.

“Nobody bats 1,000,” Lopez told Seth Meyers on Wednesday night as critics were preparing to pan her new thriller
Jennifer Lopez told Seth Meyers on his NBC late-night show on Wednesday that “there’s worse movies than ‘Gigli’ out there,” and according to critics, “The Boy Next Door” might be one of them.
While TheWrap‘s Inkoo Kang wrote “Lopez is far and away the best thing about the film,” she ultimately joined the majority of the critics panning this weekend’s wide release from Universal Pictures by concluding it’s “neither good nor bad, nor campy nor scary enough to be in any way memorable.

In the last two decades, the once-disreputable genre of the erotic thriller has improbably gone arthouse, resulting in critically lauded but largely unseen indies like last year’s “Under the Skin” and “Stranger by the Lake.” A throwback to such racy but scolding Adrian Lyne movies as “Unfaithful” and “Indecent Proposal,” “The Boy Next Door” returns the mainstream erotic thriller to the multiplex, but its thin T-shirts and thinner characterizations fail to make a convincing case for the genre’s resurrection.
