A lot of really fun movies from the eighties and nineties are tough to get decent copies of. While some of the stories have happy endings, other films seem all but doomed to languish until a niche label like Arrow Video, Kino Lorber, or Unearthed Films gives them the TLC they deserve. So, what’s the title we’re worried is Gone Forever here at JoBlo? A cool little thriller (which I previously wrote up for Best Movie You Never Saw) from 1991 called Ricochet has a pretty impressive pedigree. The movie stars Denzel Washington, John Lithgow, Ice-t, Kevin Pollack and The Bionic Woman herself, Lindsay Wagner, while Highlander’s Russell Mulcahy directs it, is produced by Joel Silver, and is written by Die Hard’s Steven E De Souza. In fact, Ricochet takes place in the same universe as Die Hard, with Mary Ellen Trainor reprising her role as snoopy TV reporter Gale Wallens.

He’s your huckleberry and also apparently your guide. To mark the 30th anniversary of Tombstone, Val Kilmer, who played gunfighter/dentist/Wyatt Earp Bff in the 1993 western, posted behind-the-scenes footage he shot during the making of the film.
Stamped with “August 26th, 1993”, the footage shows trailers marked “Doc” and “Wyatt”, for lawman Earp as played by Kurt Russell. The footage then shows Russell outside of his trailer, with cameraman Kilmer assuring him, “You’ve arrived! You’re a pro!” Russell then shows photos of himself and the real Earp side by side, challenging the viewer to figure out who is who, even referencing an old Memorex ad just to further date the clip.

Actor Denzel Washington was cast in director Sam Esmail’s Leave the World Behind before he was replaced by Mahershala Ali. Initially, however, the author of the book that inspired the feature was very intrigued by Washington in the main role.

Director Esmail’s upcoming Leave the World Behind feature is based on the Alam novel of the same name. Although greatly inspired by the source material, Esmail shared that his movie might differ greatly from the novel. This was intentional, as Esmail didn’t want to create a complete duplicate of Alam’s work.
“I’m not a fan of making a carbon copy of the book,” Esmail said in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly. “What I wanted was to create this standalone piece so that you could read...

Actor Denzel Washington has had his fair share of love scenes in his long career. For many female actors, shooting love scenes can be uncomfortable when they have to remove clothing. But one actor insisted to undress for Washington in this action thriller.
Denzel Washington’s co-star felt she needed to be topless for their love scene even though she didn’t have to be Denzel Washington | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Washington collaborated with Mark Wahlberg first time in his 2013 feature 2 Guns. He signed on for the project because he needed to star in something light after doing the heavy drama Flight. A lighthearted romp with Wahlberg was exactly what he needed. But the actor also found himself teaming up with a familiar face in actor Paula Patton.

After a bidding war in 2020 for Rumaan Alam’s acclaimed psychological thriller novel, Netflix won the rights to “Leave the World Behind,” which has been selected as the opening-night film of the 2023 AFI Fest, to take place on Wednesday, Oct. 25, at the Tcl Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles.
The dramatic film reunites director Sam Esmail (“Mr. Robot”) with his “Homecoming” lead Julia Roberts, who plays one half of a married couple (along with Ethan Hawke) who rent a luxury home and find their sojourn interrupted by the presence of another couple (Mahershala Ali and Myha’la Herrold) who arrive in the middle of the night bringing news of a cyberattack and the insistence that the home is theirs. Roberts was initially to costar with her “The Pelican Brief” costar Denzel Washington, who was to play Ali’s role.

For a time in the 1990s, a film adaptation of a John Grisham novel was guaranteed to turn a tidy profit at the box office, if not mushroom into a full-on blockbuster. "The Firm," "The Pelican Brief" and "The Client" all made loads of money off of a built-in audience that just had to see how the lawyer-turned-bestselling author's latest book was brought to life by Hollywood's biggest stars. Tom Cruise, Gene Hackman, Denzel Washington, Julia Roberts, Tommy Lee Jones, and Susan Sarandon, among many others, were enlisted to turn these page-turners into big-screen spectacles. They were never better than over-produced B movies, but you didn't care because the material was never more than risible. Grisham wrote disposable legal thrillers that moved fast enough to get you past their myriad implausibilities, and there was nothing wrong with this.

I love a good Batman movie as much as the next person, but one thing that's always bugged me is how often Bruce Wayne is treated as a bit of a cipher in his own story. Screenwriters and directors are all too eager to get to the more entertaining business of the supervillains, repeatedly giving us the hoary old imagery of his parents' murder and the billionaire moping around his mansion before we get to the fun stuff.
That flaw is comprehensively addressed in "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm," the 1993 theatrical release originating from the Emmy-Award-winning animated TV series. To date, it is the only Batman film to fully invest in Bruce Wayne and his shadowy alter ego as a character just as interesting as Gotham City's colorful gallery of crooks.
The stylized animation gives us a hunky Bruce Wayne who literally puts the square jaw into the term "square-jawed hero,...

In 1997, Alan J. Pakula's "The Devil's Own" came and went with minimal fanfare. Although coming from the director of "All the President's Men," and the recent John Grisham hit "The Pelican Brief," no one much paid attention. Even the presence of Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt couldn't pull in audiences or dazzle critics. "The Devil's Own" was a modest hit, earning 140 million worldwide, and earned tepid reviews from critics; it currently holds a 35 approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It's one of those major studio releases that seems to exist only to provide the writers of movie-related Trivia Pursuit cards an opportunity to stump players. It awaits on basic cable, filling time between dinner and the late shows. It was Pakula's final film before his death, and cinematographer Gordon Willis' final film before his retirement.

Nick Nolte and Julia Roberts notoriously did not get along during the making of “I Love Trouble,” director Charles Shyer’s 1994 romantic comedy about two rival newspaper reporters forced to come together to investigate a train derailment. Roberts was midway through filming the movie when she told The New York Times in December 1993 while promoting “The Pelican Brief” that Nolte was “completely disgusting” on set.
“From the moment I met him we sort of gave each other a hard time, and naturally we get on each other’s nerves,” Roberts said when asked about Nolte’s reputation of behaving crudely on set. “[While he can be] completely charming and very nice, he’s also completely disgusting. He’s going to hate me for saying this, but he seems go out of his way to repel people. He’s a kick.”

Though it has long since been replaced by streaming, the rental chain, which went belly up more than a decade ago, once held prime spots on the weekend social calendars of families, couples, teens, gamers and solo movie-lovers as the place to peruse the shelves and pick out a VHS or DVD to take home — temporarily.

It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Julia Roberts was one of the dominant Hollywood stars for a good twenty-year period. From her breakout role in 1988’s Mystic Pizza, Roberts skyrocketed to the top of the A-list when she starred opposite Richard Gere in Garry Marshall’s Pretty Woman. An unlikely Cinderella story about an escort that falls in love with a high-powered executive, it’s a movie that is definitely a Hollywood fairytale, but one that a lot of people loved in 1990, with it being one of the year’s top-grossing movies. From there, Roberts made a string of hits, including Flatliners, The Pelican Brief, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Notting Hill and many more, but respect in more heavy vehicles eluded her. Movies like Mary Reilly and Michael Collins were embarrassing for how miscast she was, and for awhile, it looked like she would be stuck doing...

Charles Shyer and Nancy Meyers' "I Love Trouble" was supposed to be a throwback rom-com in the mold of a Spencer Tracy-Katharine Hepburn classic. The pairing of Nick Nolte and Julia Roberts as a couple of quarrelsome newspaper reporters seemed relatively promising. Roberts was one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood at the time, while Nolte was two years removed from being named People's Sexiest Man Alive. This duo was nothing if not photogenic. Surely, they could generate enough chemistry to keep movie theaters packed throughout the summer of 1994. The erstwhile movie magazine Premiere was bullish enough on the film to predict it would be the fifth highest grossing movie of the season. It felt like a can't-miss proposition.
But miss is exactly what it did. The 45 million film opened to a paltry 7.9 million in late June, barely finishing fifth ahead of Mike Nichols' "Wolf," which was...

Denzel Washington never saw a production of “Macbeth” in high school or college. So when he was offered the titular role in Shakespeare’s great tragedy, which he’d only read in the past two years, he wanted to make sure that he could wrap his head around how director Joel Coen would shoot the film with him and Frances McDormand as Lady Macbeth. “Let’s talk about the black and white of it all,” Washington recalls saying to Coen in an early conversation.
Coen began to respond, “Well, you’re Black …” before Washington stopped him. “No, no, no,” he interrupted. “I’m talking about you shooting in black and white!”

One of the axioms of technology and show business is that content is king. That’s certainly true in Hollywood, where books adapted for film and television projects have never been hotter.
The development of Dune to Harry Potter through Game of Thrones, among many other projects, bears witness to that trend.
Entertainment attorney Jake Levy specializes in that realm. Over the years, Levy has facilitated many major film and TV deals for authors, such as John Grisham.
Levy talked with Deadline about the state of development from book sources.
Deadline: Do you think many authors are creating books with film and tv franchises in mind? Is that a good thing, or does it cheapen the art of writing?

There are certain things that some actors won’t do and might even have a personal policy for thanks to something that happened in the past or a personal set of beliefs that prohibits them from acting out certain scenes. Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about filmmakers! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today, Conor and I bring in the big guns (One Heat Minute Productions creator Blake Howard) to discuss one of the great filmmakers: Alan J. Pakula. After making a name for himself as a producer (he earned an Oscar nomination for To Kill a Mockingbird), Pakula emerged as a seminal New Hollywood director with his “paranoia trilogy:” Klute (1971), The Parallax View (1974), and All the President’s Men (1976). And yet, he is rarely acknowledged in the upper-echelon of great 70s filmmakers like Coppola or De Palma.
On this episode we focus on Pakula’s underseen, unassuming western Comes a Horseman, his over-cooked domestic thriller Consenting Adults, and his final film The Devil’s Own, which stars Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt.

There is a lot going on for Netflix this month and it all starts with some high profile original films. Zack Snyder’s latest zombie effort Army of the Dead premieres on May 21. That will be preceded by Monster, the adaptation of Walter Dean Myers’ classic YA book, on May 7 and Amy Adams Rear Window-esque The Woman in the Window on May 14.

Matthew McConaughey is attached to star in a series for HBO based on “A Time for Mercy,” John Grisham’s follow-up to “A Time to Kill” (via Variety). The 1996 film version of “A Time to Kill” starred the young McConaughey as attorney Jake Brigance, the main character in the Grisham trilogy that includes bestsellers “A Time to Kill” (1989), “Sycamore Row” (2013), and the most recent “A Time for Mercy” (2020). Directed by Joel Shumacher from a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman, “A Time to Kill” was a career shift for McConaughey, who starred in his first leading dramatic role opposite Sandra Bullock and Samuel L. Jackson.
The film follows Brigance (McConaughey) as he defends a Black man (Jackson) accused of murdering two white men who raped his 10-year-old daughter. In sequel “A Time for Mercy,” Brigance is forced to defend the boy who murdered his mother’s boyfriend, a deputy sheriff, because the...

Matthew McConaughey is attached to star in a series adaptation of the John Grisham novel “A Time for Mercy,” which is currently in development at HBO, Variety has learned from sources.
The book, published in 2020, is a followup to Grisham’s books “A Time to Kill” and “Sycamore Row,” all of which center on the character of attorney Jake Brigance. McConaughey previously starred as Brigance in the film adaptation of “A Time to Kill” in 1996. The role was an early breakout for McConaughey, starring opposite Samuel L. Jackson and Sandra Bullock.
In “A Time to Kill,” Brigance defends a Black man (Jackson) who killed the two white men who savagely raped his daughter. In “A Time for Mercy,” Brigance must defend a young man who killed his mother’s boyfriend, a deputy sheriff, with the boy claiming the man was abusive towards his mother, himself, and his little sister.

Exclusive: The Matthew Miele-directed documentary Alan Pakula: Going For Truth is going out to distributors to give a posthumous appraisal of an understated filmmaker who directed some of the most seminal films of his era.
Pakula was killed in a freak accident in 1998, when a metal pipe was turned into a deadly projectile on the Long Island Expressway after a car in front him ran it over and sent it airborne. The object smashed through the windshield of Pakula’s black Volvo station wagon and struck him in the head, killing him instantly at age 70.
Pakula’s passing stunned Hollywood at the time. The film, which was first revealed by Deadline in 2017 and which played last fall at an AFI tribute to the director, celebrates the iconic works that Pakula left behind. That includes the films All The President’s Men, The Parallax View, Klute, Sophie’s Choice, Presumed Innocent, Consenting Adults and The Pelican Brief.

A movie like The Little Things probably would’ve done very well in the 90’s. A time when crime thrillers such as Se7en, and another Denzel Washington starrer The Pelican Brief, could thrive financially and when actors rather than superheroes were bonafide box office draws. Given how Denzel is one of the few A-listers left who can open a movie on his name alone, The Little Things might've made a decent profit in a pre-covid world. Yet, given the film’s poor and dated quality, it would’ve been best to let it live in the past.

It was 31 years ago when cinematographer Stephen Goldblatt first met playwright John Patrick Shanley. At that point in his career, Goldblatt had photographed “The Hunger,” “Young Sherlock Holmes,” and the first two “Lethal Weapon” movies. Shanley, who had won an Oscar for writing 1987’s “Moonstruck,” needed a trained eye to lens his first film as a director. It was an offbeat romantic comedy about a terminally ill man, played by Tom Hanks, who agrees to leap into a volcano to assuage island gods.
“‘Joe Versus the Volcano’ was a wonderful experience for me,” Goldblatt said to TheWrap. “John was such an imaginative director and I think the film was well ahead of its time. We got on great together and stayed friends over these years.”
Goldblatt was born in South Africa and raised in London. Now 75, he makes his home in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. A couple years ago,...

Exclusive: Tony Goldwyn is taking over for Liev Schreiber in Warner Bros.’ King Richard which is set to return to production in Los Angeles next week after pausing due to the pandemic earlier this spring.
Goldwyn is stepping in to play the role of Paul Cohen, a noted tennis coach whose clients included John McEnroe, Pete Sampras, and Venus and Serena Williams. I understand that Schreiber had to depart King Richard given a scheduling conflict.
The Reinaldo Marcus Green directed, Zach Baylin written feature follows the true story of hardscrabble, but iron-willed father of Venus and Serena Williams, (played by Will Smith) who had a plan to make his daughters the greatest tennis players in the world. This is how he pulled it off. The movie already logged three weeks of filming before stopping out of safety due to Covid-19.

With Lovecraft Country still providing HBO and HBO Max with its horror content through October, the streamer is looking elsewhere for its spooky season offerings. HBO Max’s new releases for October 2020 feature some truly awesome horror library titles.
Jordan Peele’s Us, John Carpenter’s The Thing, and David Fincher’s Se7en all arrive on Oct. 1. That alone should be enough to last you through spooky season. And if it doesn’t, It: Chapter Two is right there as well. October is also a big month for Batman and Superman with Man of Steel arriving on Oct. 1 along with a whole of animated specials dropping that same day.
In relation to the library titles, this isn’t HBO Max’s strongest month from an original perspective. But there is still plenty to like here. The West Wing election special arrives on Oct. 15. That will be followed by David Byrne...

HBO Max is serving up a lot of great new movies this October. Fittingly for the spooky season, the Warner Bros. streaming service is adding a fair few classic horrors to its library next month, but there’s really something for everyone going up – from comedies to romances to sci-fi to superhero films.
Speaking of that last genre, DC lovers will be pleased to note that 2013’s Man of Steel, the movie that kicked off the Dceu, is among the titles arriving on October 1st. Besides that, there’s a bunch of animated DC pics dropping the same day, including Superman/Batman: Public Enemies and All-Star Superman. 2005’s Constantine featuring Keanu Reeves, meanwhile, also debuts on the service from the 1st.

Netflix has acquired yet another star-studded adaptation. The streaming service has prevailed in a bidding war for “Leave the World Behind,” an upcoming feature film that will star Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington and be directed by Sam Esmail (“Mr. Robot”).

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed but Deadline noted that the book portion of the deal was in the seven-figure range and could compare with the $120 million that Apple paid for the “Emancipation” runaway slave drama. Sources close to the project confirmed the project with IndieWire but did not elaborate on the financial terms.

Written and shot in 2018, the wait proved worth it for “Search Party” Season 3. The wickedly delightful comedic thriller about a group of entitled hipsters who become embroiled in an increasingly complicated string of crimes — some of them quite serious — had to move from TBS to HBO Max before Season 3 could debut, so it’s a good thing creators Charles Rogers and Sarah Violet-Bliss have always had their finger on the pulse. Employing the same biting and forward-looking lens that has driven the show since its 2016 debut, this latest season’s satire feels as sharp and timely as anything written today.
“The show has always been a satire on privilege and white privilege,” Rogers said during a recent phone interview. “Even though we wrote Season 3 under a different climate, it’s not like any of the themes are more or less relevant now, because the system has always been the system.

Denzel Washington is outstanding as novelist Walter Mosley’s hero, Ezekiel “Easy” Rawlins, in the immaculate, 1940s-set neo-noir “Devil in a Blue Dress,” but that’s not the only reason for its significance. The movie was the first, and remains the only, onscreen appearance of the character, even though Mosley has featured him in 14 novels since the first publication in 1990. There was the potential for a movie franchise starring Washington, but the film’s failure at the box office (despite favorable reviews) likely destroyed any chances of that happening. However, while a series never materialized, this one-off adaptation remains a monument for Washington fans and lovers of hard-boiled fiction alike.

Treehouse Pictures, the production studio behind Netflix’s 2018 hit “Set it Up,” announced Wednesday that it has acquired rights to John Grisham’s New York Times best-selling novel “The Confession.”
Grisham’s novels have resulted in 10 theatrically-released feature films, including “The Firm,” “A Time to Kill” and “The Pelican Brief,” and they’ve grossed a collective $645.7 million at the domestic box office.
“The Confession” tells the fictional story of Donté Drumm, a young black man whose own forced confession put him on death row nine years ago for the rape and murder of a high school cheerleader, a crime he didn’t commit.

Denzel Washington, 64, was honored at the 47th AFI Life Achievement Award tribute gala on Thursday by a handful of stars, such as Michael B. Jordan, Chadwick Boseman, and Julia Roberts. During the Los Angeles event, Denzel - who was joined by wife Pauletta and his kids Katia, 31, and Malcolm, 28 - listened as his peers took the stage to sing his praises and revere his illustrious career, which includes starring in classics like Training Day and Remember the Titans.
Julia - who starred alongside Denzel in 1993's The Pelican Brief - read a heartfelt letter of recommendation written by Denzel's university acting teacher, Robert Stone. "I say without hesitation that Mr. Washington is the finest young actor I have ever known," the letter read. "If there is such a thing as genius, then I assure you Mr. Washington is one. I honestly believe that even now he is the best actor...

Denzel Washington wouldn’t be where he is today without the love and support of his wife Pauletta.
While being honored with the American Film Institute’s life achievement award on Thursday night, the Oscar-winning actor, 64, shared a touching tribute to his longtime love, who attended the event alongside two of their adult children, Malcom, 28, and Katia Washington, 31.
Praising Pauletta as the “most important person in my life,” Denzel quipped that the pair “were nine when we got together.”
“40 years,” he continued, reflecting on their enduring romance. “40 years of sacrifice. 40 years of forgiveness. She taught me about faith, spirituality, love,...

Damon Lindelhof’s upcoming political action-thriller The Hunt has added three big names to its cast. Emma Roberts, Justin Hartley, and Glenn Howerton have joined the movie, and although no plot details have been released yet, the movie is supposed to be based around the current political climate as we know it.
There’s a lot of material there, and a lot of different directions they can go. I like all three actors, and generally find them pretty pleasant, so it will be interesting to see them as politicians if that’s the way the film goes, as I generally despise politicians. I know, controversial and groundbreaking stance.
I’ve read two conflicting reports stating The Hunt will hit theaters in either September or October, but we do know production has begun, so I’m sure we will get a definitive date very soon.
Do you like political thrillers? Which one is your favorite?...

Hulu has nixed plans for TV shows based on John Grisham’s The Rainmaker and Rogue Lawyer, which were set to showcase a shared universe.
Shared universes are apparently no longer restricted to Marvel and DC blockbusters, at least that’s the notion streaming service Hulu was embracing last December, when it started plans for television series adaptations of multiple John Grisham novels. That’s right, folks, Hulu was conceiving a live-action franchise that was to be called The John Grisham Universe! However, in the latest news, those plans have been taken off the table.
Hulu has ended development on its once-ambitious plans for serial television adaptations of John Grisham novels, according to Variety. While no reason was provided for the move, a major development worth noting is Disney's takeover of Hulu back in May. The plans were initially slated to started with 1995’s The Rainmaker and 2015’s Rogue Lawyer,...
