Sylvester Stallone's "Rambo" movies might not be as beloved as his "Rocky" films, but they've had just as fascinating a trajectory. What's more, they've been incredibly influential in the history of action movies, charting the general evolution of the genre across four decades. If you want to get an insight into the state of action filmmaking at a certain time, "Rambo" films are a good gauge.
"First Blood," the inaugural "Rambo" film, was noteworthy for blending what are now well-known action tropes with an attempt at exploring the very real issue of Ptsd in the context of the Vietnam War. Stallone's John J. Rambo was introduced as a former United States Army Special Forces officer who despite his preternatural combat skills was haunted by his experiences overseas. Following that, the character of Rambo underwent somewhat of a transformation throughout the '80s, becoming the epitome of the muscle-bound,...

Beetlejuice is one of the most underrated horror-comedy films of the 80s when the subgenre had just started to make a mainstream splash. It also remains a lesser-known collaboration between director Tim Burton and actor Michael Keaton, best known for their work together on the Batman franchise.

After decades, the film is finally receiving a sequel, making fans reflect on the original film’s success or the lack of it at the box office. While Beetlejuice certainly did not set the box office on fire, it still performed relatively well. As a result, the film’s box office numbers can often deceive fans, and here is why the horror comedy was a major commercial success.

Expendables 4 or Expend4bles was the final nail in the coffin for the renowned Sylvester Stallone action franchise that made a name for bringing some iconic stars together on screen. The fourth and latest film in the franchise was a critical and commercial disaster. Adding more to its list of injuries, the film also gave Sylvester Stallone a Razzie for the Worst Supporting Actor.
Sylvester Stallone in The Expendables 4
With his latest Razzie for Expendables 4, Sylvester Stallone has made a record for most Razzie wins by an actor and an action icon. Even after being one of the greatest names in action and Hollywood, Stallone has been a recipient of a record 11 dishonoring Razzies in total. It does not look like any other action star would be able to break the record soon.

An in-depth report paints a portrait of star power run amok on the set of Suddenly – a Jake Gyllenhaal drama that fell apart days before filming.
Whether it’s Val Kilmer’s antics on the set of The Island Of Doctor Moreau or Sly Stallone demanding last-minute changes during the filming of Rambo 3, cinema history is littered with stories of star power gone wild. According to a report in France’s Technikart magazine (and spotted by World of Reel) we can add the Jake Gyllenhaal-starring survival drama Suddenly to the list.
The film – essentially a two-hander about a pair of lovers trapped on an inhospitably cold island – was originally due to begin filming in the autumn of 2021. It was to be directed by Thomas Bidegain, with the script co-written by newcomer Valentine Monteil. For Bidegain, known for writing such films as A Prophet and Rust And Bone, it would...

Sylvester Stallone has been known to command high movie salaries since writing Rocky helped establish his A-list status. But Meryl Streep once scoffed at the high pay movie stars like Stallone often earned, which was a sentiment Stallone didn’t agree with.

The conversation surrounding unequal pay in the film industry has been a topic for decades. Many female actors have spoken out about not earning as much as their male counterparts – from Jennifer Lawrence to Meryl Streep. In a 1994 interview with Entertainment Weekly, a younger Streep even referenced an unnamed male star known for commanding huge paydays. But this was despite his films not earning much at the box office.
“Now I love [she goes off the record to name a major male movie star], but he doesn’t bring in the box office. But he will command a big salary,” Streep said.

If you want to enjoy some often very good and often very bad action movies, the "Rambo" franchise is for you. And if you want to watch the strange and often disturbing trajectory of America's political core over nearly 40 years of cinema, the "Rambo" franchise is also for you. By accident or design, Sylvester Stallone's famed action series contains multitudes. They're macho, violent, ridiculous one-man-army movies. They're also propaganda, apologies for propaganda, and then propaganda again. They demand popcorn, and a crowd ready to hoot and holler. But also analysis.
But few film franchises outside of "Fast and Furious" have titles as confusing as the "Rambo" movies, which defy common logic and may have you, the John Rambo newbie, wondering if there's a trick to watching these things. Honestly, the key is to watch them in order of production. It's the only way to appreciate the series' loose continuity and,...

The making of Rambo III had a tumultuous production that saw numerous firings and hirings, with some, like director Peter MacDonald, making out far better than his predecessor, Russell Mulcahy, whose canning gave the second unit director a shot at helming his first feature. But Mulcahy was far from being the only production member who was sent home…
In an excerpt (via Vanity Fair) from the new book The Last Action Heroes: The Triumphs, Flops, and Feuds of Hollywood’s Kings of Carnage, Peter MacDonald recalled stepping in for Rambo III after Mulcahy miscast several Russian troops, which lead Sylvester Stallone called “third-rate male models” and “two dozen blond, blue-eyed pretty boys that resembled rejects from a surfing contest.”

It will likely surprise precisely no one that Sylvester Stallone doesn’t boast a particularly impressive personal awards history given that he once starred in an Academy Award Best Picture winner and his films have collectively earned more than $4.5 billion in box office worldwide. While he has three Oscar nominations to his credit – two for writing and starring in “Rocky” in 1977 and a supporting nod for “Creed” in 2016 – along with Golden Globe and Critics Choice triumphs for “Creed” in ’16, the overwhelming majority of his awards attention has come by way of the Razzies.
Maybe it’s time for Stallone to receive a little more respect.

Starring on That ’70s Show as Red Forman was one of the highlights of Kurtwood Smith’s decorated acting career for both professional and personal reasons. The now 79-year-old actor has told the press that the character of Red really hit home for him as the character always reminded him of his stepfather. Sadly, Smith’s stepdad passed away right before the first season of That ’70s Show aired.
Debra Jo Rupp, who played opposite Smith as Red’s wife, Kitty, also drew inspiration for her character through her own parental figures stating that Kitty was very much her mother. While Rupp and Smith had a natural rapport on the show, Rupp has recently revealed that she was quite nervous around Smith on the first season of That ’70s Show. Here’s why.

In the ‘80s, probably more movies than you realize became animated series. Sure, The Real Ghostbusters and Disney’s spinoff series were prolific, but did you know even Ace Ventura, Dumb and Dumber, Beetlejuice, Bill and Ted, The Karate Kid and Back to the Future had cartoons? Those all make sense as they were family friendly films. But even some R-rated movies spawned kiddie cartoons.

Sylvester Stallone shot down more zeroes than John Rambo did enemy forces.
Stallone starred as the Vietnam War veteran in five movies: the original trilogy and two subsequent movies as part of a franchise reboot. The original movie “First Blood” was a critical and commercial darling with the subsequent two sequels being received less warmly.

When Parade magazine revealed in 1986 that Sylvester Stallone earned 12 million to star in "Rocky IV," every studio executive in Hollywood ordered Tums in bulk. That sum, which equates to 32 million in 2022, doubled the per-picture salary pulled down by the vaunted likes of Dustin Hoffman, Warren Beatty, and Robert Redford. Arnold Schwarzenegger was only making 3 million back then.
In an industry ever mindful of overspending -- while gleefully overspending when, say, someone decides the Universal Monsters brand should be reinvented as an action franchise spearheaded by Tom Cruise -- the last thing studios want is for a volatile, highly sought-after star like Hoffman to learn their competition is raking in twice what they make. This is when budgets start skyrocketing. And, in 1986, an era where there were no sure things like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this is how an executive loses their job.

Sylvester Stallone and the general filmgoing public seem to have very different views of John Rambo. Thanks to the bold, ultra-jingoistic attitudes of "Rambo: First Blood Part II" and "Rambo III," the title character came to be, throughout the 1980s, a symbol for unstoppable American military might. Rambo was often seen charging shirtless into gunfire-heavy areas, heavy artillery draped around his body, firing bullets into anyone or anything that entered his field of vision.
This ultra-macho, military-forward vision of Rambo stands in direct contrast to Ted Kotcheff's 1982 original "First Blood," co-scripted by Stallone. In that film, Rambo is a depressed veteran, defeated by life and saddened by the deaths of his wartime compatriots. Rambo is then treated so badly by the local cops -- being mistreated is depicted as a symbol for veterans' plight -- that he "snaps" back into military mode, tragically becoming a solider again, kind of against his will.

When it comes to big-screen blockbuster choices, Sylvester Stallone has made some good (Rocky, Rambo, and Creed franchises) and bad calls (Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot and passing on films such as Pulp Fiction, Die Hard, and Witness) during his decades-long film career. But he missed a big payoff when he said no to Rambo IV, where he could’ve made 34 million.
“We were doing Rambo III. We thought it was going to be the biggest hit – this was before it came out. And I was paid a fortune for it.

There's a saying that luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. That was certainly the case for "Rambo III" director Peter MacDonald. A bizarre series of events led to a break that resulted in his directorial debut on a movie starring one of Hollywood's biggest action stars, Sylvester Stallone.
"First Blood" was the first film in the "Rambo" franchise, debuting in 1982. The movie examines the mistreatment of veterans and their struggle to reintegrate into society. The big new Warner Bros. release on HBO and HBO Max this month is “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore,” which actually debuted on the HBO Max streaming service on May 30. The third film in the Wizarding World prequel franchise first hit theaters in April, and is now available to stream in 4K.
There’s also the updated version of “Father of the Bride” premiering on June 16, while a pair of noteworthy documentaries are coming on the early side this month: “The Janes” premieres June 8 and follows unlikely outlaws in pre-Roe v. Wade America who defied state legislation that banned abortion, while “Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain” debuts on June 9.

With its list of new releases for June 2022, HBO Max is joining in what should be a TV summer to remember.
Not content to let Netflix’s Stranger Things or Prime Video’s The Boys to dominate the summer TV landscape, HBO is coming through with a new season of one of its big hits. Westworld season 4 is set to premiere June 26 on both HBO and HBO Max. What will this season of the increasingly confusing sci-fi drama be about? Per HBO’s synopsis it will be “A dark odyssey about the fate of sentient life on earth.” So you know, only that.
Irma Vep is the only other Max Original of note this month. Based on a 1996 cult classic of the same name, this limited series stars Alicia Vikander as a disillusioned movie star looking to remake the early 20th century French silent film serial Les Vampires.

"There is no such thing as an action movie," says Steven E. de Souza, writer of more than one film venerated below, "'Action movie' is a term that was invented in the '80s." He's not wrong. Before the MTV age, action was diversified. Swashbucklers. Westerns. War epics. Crime thrillers. Fists of fury. All the way back to Buster Keaton, audiences thrilled at feats of derring-do, but action was just another tool in filmmakers' boxes.

It leaked out a while back that the new “Fast and Furious” film, “F9,” would feature a sequence set in space — a setting that sounded, on paper, like it might be the logical culmination of all those spectacular gravity-defying leaps that the cars in this series are perpetually making. Yet I’m not sure if anyone will be prepared for what happens at the climax of “F9.”
Roman (Tyrese Gibson) and Tej (Chris “Ludacris” Bridges), who’ve been quibbling all through the movie, are behind the wheel of a red Pontiac Fiero that’s been outfitted with a rocket launcher. The car is hitched to the back of a space shuttle, which is preparing to send them into orbit; as they fumble around with makeshift yellow space helmets that look like they belong on a pair of 1960s aquanauts (all that’s missing is the rear-projection fakery), the sequence turns into pure cheeseball comedy.

Giannetto De Rossi tragically, has left us, as a result of the same plague that has cut short the lives of many. He leaves behind a mammoth filmography which, with roughly 163 films, contains plenty of contradictions and surprises and further outlines the career of a true independent, a bona fide iconoclast, and the third generation of a family to leave a lasting mark on the film industry, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Camillo De Rossi, considered by many historians Italy’s first make-up artist, and his father, Alberto De Rossi. Giannetto, however, will be the first De Rossi to delve deep into the world of practical special effects, and his legacy lives on in the work of one of his two daughters, Lorella. To truly put into perspective the incredibly multi-faceted career of this giant, let us briefly go through a handful of the many diverse directors he...

The filmmakers behind 80s beefcake throwback Commando Ninja are back, planning a new chapter in their humorous and ultra violent action adventures, Commando Ninja II: Invasion America. They look to be playing on good old Cold War era fear that enemy forces would invade 'Murica and the slew of films that came with it. Invasion USA and Red Dawn come to mind. Rambo III comes to mind with the return to Vietnam. They have launched a crowdfunding campaign and its off to a roaring start. The production's aim is loftier this time around too, opting to shoot on location in Utah and Thailand, trying to eliminiate as much use of greenscreen as possible. They're also hoping to go 100% practical in camera effects...

It’d be hard to meet someone who grew up in the 70s and 80s without knowing about Sylvester Stallone and his myriad of major hit films. He brought to life fictional boxer Rocky Balboa in the Rocky franchise, starred alongside Kurt Russell in the buddy cop flick Tango & Cash, and even took a stab at musical comedy with Dolly Parton in Rhinestone. And though he’s well-known for those movies and more, one film series really put him on the map as the badass action star he became synonymous with over the years.
Stallone’s role as Vietnam veteran John Rambo for the 1982 action-thriller First Blood made him a sensation in the industry. The pic tells the story of a former Green Beret traveling by foot who stumbles upon abusive law enforcement while passing through a rural town. Show business sure is fickle. Four years ago Sylvester Stallone won the Redeemer Award from the Razzies for his Oscar-nominated performance in “Creed,” but now he’s back on their hit list, nominated for Worst Actor and Worst Screenplay for “Rambo: Last Blood.” He could extend an unfortunate record if he wins again.
To date, Stallone has won Worst Actor four times, more than anyone else: “Rhinestone” (1984); “Rambo: First Blood Part II” and “Rocky IV” (1985); “Rambo III” (1988); and “Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot” (1992). And that doesn’t even count his “victories” for Worst Actor of the 1980s and Worst Actor of the 20th Century. He also has the most Worst Actor nominations of all time (15) — basically he’s the Meryl Streep of the Razzies.

John Rambo has had a more complicated journey than most franchise heroes. The blockbuster character, played for the past 37 years by Sylvester Stallone, has symbolized the evils of war, the awesomeness of war, the evils of America, the awesomeness of America, the evils of violence, the awesomeness of violence — sometimes in the same film. He’s come to represent the nation’s complicated views about war, which are at turns condemned and celebrated, often without much concern for continuity or rationality.
Watching the whole “Rambo” franchise is like having a conversation with somebody who has convictions, but isn’t 100% sure what they are. As such, the films are sometimes cartoonishly self-serious, sometimes accidentally amusing, and occasionally — at the best of times — genuine eye-openers.

Lionsgate and Millennium have another meat and potatoes box office feast on their hands in the wake of Angel Has Fallen overperforming this past weekend to a $21.3M opening with Sylvester Stallone’s Rambo: Last Blood set to open between $21M-$24M on Sept. 20. Longline for Last Blood directed by Adrian Grunberg, and written by Stallone and Matthew Cirulnick is “Rambo must confront his past and unearth his ruthless combat skills to exact revenge in a final mission.” The finale’s projected 3-day is expected to best the starts of 1985’s Rambo: First Blood Part II, 2008’s Rambo, also from Lionsgate ($18.2M), 1988’s Rambo III ($13M) and, of course, First Blood, which opened to No. 1 with $6.6M at 901 theaters in March 1982. Exclusive: Forrie J. Smith, who has recurred as Lloyd on Yellowstone since season 1, has been promoted to series regular for the upcoming third season, and John Emmet Tracy (iZombie) is set for a recurring role on Paramount Network’s flagship drama series starring Kevin Costner.
Co-created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, Yellowstone follows the Dutton family, led by John Dutton (Costner), who controls the largest contiguous ranch in the United States, which is under constant attack by those it borders – land developers, an Indian reservation and America’s first National Park.
Smith has appeared in a total of 13 episodes as Lloyd Pierce, cow boss for John Dutton.
Tracy will play Ellis Steele, a chief litigator whose firm represents Fortune 500 companies in land-acquisition deals. Steele is extremely intelligent — the kind of person who will smile as he stabs you in the back.

Sylvester Stallone’s 1993 actioner, Cliffhanger, is getting a female-fronted reboot, with a key Fast & Furious franchise producer onboard.
Cliffhanger may not be widely seen as an iconic Sylvester Stallone actioner, but the high-altitude intensity of the Renny Harlin-directed 1993 blockbuster reaped respectable box office rewards, banking $255 million worldwide off a $70 million budget – more than the $189 million made from Sly's then-recent franchise mainstay in 1988’s Rambo III, and certainly more than the $119.9 million earned by 1990 dud Rocky V. Indeed, Cliffhanger has its fans, notably Fast & Furious film franchise producer Neal Moritz, who’s now spearheading a female-fronted reboot effort.

John Rambo is coming back, and this time — as usual — it’s personal. Lionsgate said today that the 37-year-old franchise will back on September 20 with the release of Rambo: Last Blood, starring Sylvester Stallone and Paz Vega.
Your logline for the series’ fifth and final chapter: When the daughter of one of his friends is kidnapped, Rambo (Stallone) — who has been working on a ranch — crosses the U.S.-Mexico border and quickly finds himself up against the full might of one of Mexico’s most violent cartels. Sergio Peris-Mencheta plays the likely ill-fated bad guy, and Yvette Monreal also stars in the film directed by Adrian Goldberg from a screenplay by Stallone and Matthew Cirulnick.
Stallone had said in July 2017 that we would not be associated with the next Rambo pic, instead focusing then on the Creed sequel. But he committed to it about 10 months later.

There are few more iconic weapons for John Rambo than his compound bow. One of the best action sequences in Rambo: First Blood Part II comes when he stealthily eliminates a squad of soldiers in a North Vietnamese prison camp. From there, it instantly became part of the character’s iconography, popping up in Rambo III where he uses it to destroy helicopters and again in Rambo when he’s seen using it for fishing.
What I’m saying is that Rambo really likes using a bow and arrow. And now, courtesy of this picture posted by Sylvester Stallone on Instagram, we can confirm that the iconic weapon will be making an appearance in Rambo V: Last Blood.
The photo came with the caption: “Death is coming your way, and there’s nothing in this world you can do to stop it…” Rambo said calmly to the gang of killers.
