Actor Clint Eastwood has starred in a variety of movies, but was once mostly known for action films like Dirty Harry. Still, the filmmaker wasn’t afraid of branching out in his younger years. But when he did a film that was too unlike his typical work, his inner circle panicked.

After building his reputation as an action star, Eastwood wanted to experiment with other genres. To do this, he began eyeing the feature Every Which Way but Loose. The 1978 movie was a huge departure from Eastwood’s usual work. The veteran actor played a trucker and part-time fighter with a pet orangutan named Clyde. Although it had action elements, it functioned heavily as a comedy, targeting a much younger audience than Eastwood’s films were used to.

When Clint Eastwood throws a punch in his new film “Cry Macho” — and Eastwood the director has always had a trademark way of filming the connecting of a fist to a guy who deserves it — there’s a sort of “aww” quality to it. You don’t necessarily have to believe he’d get the drop on a goon one-third his age. It’s a wink from a movie legend, and it’s sort of hilarious.
The story of a down-and-out ex-rodeo star and a troubled boy, “Cry Macho” includes a handful of other classic Eastwood signposts: Crustiness, a truck, horses, bad guys, wise words growled to a “kid,” and a plaintive musical motif. There are wide-open spaces, but also dark interior spaces — both the minimal-lighting kind and the quietly acted kind, quivering with regret. A road movie that, considering who made it, starts pretty far down that road, “Cry Macho” is familiar and loose,...

Verna Bloom, who appeared in “Animal House” and worked with the likes of Martin Scorsese, died Jan. 9 in Bar Harbor, Maine, her rep confirmed to Variety. She was 80 years old.
The cause was complications of dementia, her family stated.
Although Bloom appeared extensively in theater and television, she is most noted for her film work. She also appeared in three films by Martin Scorsese — “Street Scenes 1970,” “The Last Temptation of Christ” (1988), and “After Hours” (1985) — and two by Clint Eastwood: “High Plains Drifter” (1973) and “Honkytonk Man” (1982).
Bloom was born in Lynn, Mass., in 1938. After graduating from Boston University, she moved to Denver and started a local theater. Moving to New York in the mid-1960s, she starred as Charlotte Corday in the Broadway revival of “Marat/Sade” and,...

Interviewing Charlie Saldana in the quiet of his North Hollywood home, the 79-year-old working key grip still exudes the cool confidence of someone who’s spent a lifetime in partnership with one of Hollywood’s great directors: Clint Eastwood.
Saldana still possesses an actor’s looks, with a salt-white mustache and a full silver mane. He began his career building scaffolding for Disney’s “Pollyanna” in 1960, following military service in the 101st Airborne Division. Joining the grip union, he was employed by Hollywood’s blossoming TV industry on “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” “Gomer Pyle, Usmc” “Hogan’s Heroes” and “The Mod Squad.” The neophyte grip learned his craft well.
Born in 1939 to Charles and Josephine Saldana, Charlie was raised with a strong work ethic that drove his rise in the industry. “Gaining grip skill was a layered, educative process,” he says.

Directors’ trademarks is a series of articles that examines the “signatures” that filmmakers leave behind in their work. This month, we’re examining the trademark style and calling signs of Clint Eastwood as director.
Clint Eastwood became an american film star in the 1960’s thanks to his acting performances in a number of western films. As he began to branch out with new roles in front of the camera, he sought out to have more creative input into the types of film projects that he would be involved in. One way he was able to accomplish this was by creating his own production company which eventually allowed him to work behind the camera as director. His first film as director was 1971’s Play Misty For Me, which was well received by critics and did well at the box office. HIs second film as director was High Plains Drifter (1973), in which he also starred.

Happy Birthday to one of We Are Movie Geeks favorite stars. Clint Eastwood was born on this day in 1930, making him 86 years old. The actor and two-time Oscar winning director hasn’t let his age slow him down a bit. Sully, his new movie as a director, opens in September.
We posted a list in 2011 of his ten best directorial efforts Here
Clint Eastwood has appeared in 68 films in his six (!) decades as an actor, and here, according to We Are Movie Geeks, are his ten best:
Honorable Mention: Honkytonk Man
By the 1980s, Clint Eastwood was one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars. With his own production company, directorial skills, and economic clout, Eastwood was able to make smaller, more personal films. A perfect example is the underrated Honkytonk Man, which also happens to be one of Eastwood’s finest performances.

Clint Eastwood revisited Harry Callahan three more times, usually whenever his career was in the dumps. If Dirty Harry was a cultural phenomenon and Magnum Force a respectable follow-up, the rest are uninspired cash-ins. The main law Harry enforces in these sequels is the Law of Diminishing Returns.
Given Dirty Harry‘s San Francisco setting, something like The Enforcer (1976) was inevitable. After all, San Fran hosted Haight-Ashbury, hippie capital of the world; was a favored site for Black Panther and Sds protests; headquarters of the nascent gay rights movement; victim of Weathermen bombings and the racially-charged Zebra murders. Writers Gail Morgan Hickman and S.W. Schurr based their script, originally titled “Moving Target,” on the Symbionese Liberation Army which kidnapped Patty Hearst. Dean Riesner (who cowrote the original Harry) and Stirling Silliphant (In the Heat of the Night) polished the film.

Longtime assistant director and production manager Tom Seidman recently gave a talk on how the budget should break down for an independent film. Highlights from Seidman's talk, which you can read below, were published in a post that originally appeared on the Film Independent blog. Many directors and I probably share the same idle daydream: A studio exec calls and says, "You simply must direct our $200 million screen epic. You’re the only one on our list." Then I wake up and realize I'm more likely to catch the measles or be hit by lightning. Let's keep dreaming, but at the same time, devote our waking hours to taking action—like veteran assistant director and production manager Tom Seidman has. Seidman’s resume includes working for directors Clint Eastwood on "Honkytonk Man," Peter Weir on "Dead Poets Society" and Robert Redford on "Ordinary People." He shared his experiences with low-budget...

There are, you could argue, two Clint Eastwoods. One is the strong, near-silent type, the man with no name but a pair of Colt revolvers or a .44 Magnum, the lean avenging angel who asks if you feel lucky, punk, and would care to make his day. Whether he's a tough cop, a tough cowboy, a tough secret-service agent, a tough military man, a tough experimental-jet-fighter pilot or a tough racist old coot, the part is a variation on Eastwood's screen persona. His status as a macho icon was cast in...

Clint Eastwood is the last, lonely representative of a mythical breed — the badass. Oh sure, there are other tough-guy actors out there (Stallone, Schwarzenegger and other assorted Expendables) but they're all a little too oiled, chiseled and ready for their Men's Health cover shoots. Eastwood is old-school; the kind of gunslinger who survived his shoot-outs not by having bigger biceps, but because he's leaner, meaner and smarter than the bad guy. Men fear his squint, not his heavy artillery or super powers.
But though he's made a permanent cigarillo-chomping, growling, feel-lucky-punk badass crater on all of pop culture (there's no Wolverine or Jason Statham without Clint), Eastwood hasn't always played it hard and flinty. He's been beat up, left for dead, stuck behind a desk and lost and confused on the range. Though he seemed keen to end his acting career as cantankerous and trigger-happy as it began — "Get off my lawn!

Colt Cabana has one of the most unique jobs in the world: comedic pro wrestler. When he's not busy dishing out punches and bodyslams for rabid crowds, he's making them laugh with his patented brand of slapstick. And this week, he's got to perform in front of one of the most intimidating crowds in the world: the Gathering of the Juggalos, the yearly summer music festival hosted by the notorious hip hop act, the Insane Clown Posse. Thousands of fans with painted faces will be heading to the sweltering heat of Cave-In-Rock, Illinois, for five days of Faygo soda, nudity and illegal substances -- and it's Cabana's job to play the villain as a marijuana-hating police officer.

The Super Bowl of Sports Entertainment, WrestleMania 28, is here with a four-hour extravaganza from Miami, Florida. The night's main event pits wrestling legend-turned-Hollywood star, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson against WWE's biggest attraction, John Cena. Cena thinks Rock is a sell-out who can't go anymore. Rock thinks Cena is overrated, one-note and protected by corporate PR. Who's right? The only way to settle it is to get in the ring.

When J. Edgar was released last Fall, We Are Movie Geeks published our Top Ten Tuesday article on Clint Eastwood’s best films as director. With word that Eastwood has come out of acting retirement, it’s time for another Top Ten list, this time of movies that Clint has starred in. Trouble With The Curve is currently filming and stars Clint as an ailing baseball scout in his twilight years who takes his daughter (played by Amy Adams) on the road for one last recruiting trip. This will be Clint’s first acting role since Gran Torino in 2008.

Typecasting is a terrible fate to befall an actor. Many of them have suffered from it over the years, accepting role after role in similar films with similar plots and similar characters simply because they have no real alternative. However, in spite of the risks involved there are also those who subvert this association; those who have elevated themselves to near legendary status within their chosen genre. Their performances define it and are woven inextricably into its rich tapestry. Two such actors are pictured above and are the subject of this article – one, a silent and anonymous loner with no time for small talk and very direct methods of dealing with his adversaries, the other a straight talking, no – nonsense peacekeeper with a trademark southern drawl. Both are perhaps best known for their westerns, although they also directed, produced and starred in a variety of other films too including military epics and ‘unorthodox’ police procedurals.

First Quentin Tarantino wants Leonardo DiCaprio for his next film and now Clint Eastwood reportedly wants him for his next project as well. After finishing up work on J. Edgar (due to be released in December), Eastwood will tackle a remake of the show biz drama/musical A Star is Born for Warner Bros. Yes, that's right, Clint Eastwood is directing a musical. For those unfamiliar, the story of A Star is Born centers on a movie star who helps a young singer/actress find fame, even as his own career wanes due to age and alcoholism. Beyonce Knowles has already joined the film as the up-and-coming star and Leo, should he sign on, would naturally play the established performer. The project has been kicking around Warner Bros. for a few years now and at one point Will Smith was in talks to star with Knowles. DiCaprio seems like an interesting choice for the lead,...

As Clint's boy, Kyle Eastwood has some big shoes to fill – but when it comes to jazz he is very much his own man
When Kyle Eastwood was eight, his dad took him to the Monterey jazz festival, near their California home. It was an attempt to pass on his own love of jazz, and it worked. Kyle was so in awe of the musicians he saw – Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughan, the Count Basie Big Band – that he decided he wanted to learn the piano.
And so his dad obliged. In fact, he began to teach Kyle himself. He was, after all, an accomplished pianist who once considered becoming a jazz musician, although it's hard to believe that today, as arguably the world's best-loved actor and director, Clint has many regrets. And, as the son of Clint, Kyle didn't just get to watch the Monterey musicians – he got to meet them,...

A star was born 30 years ago in Beyoncé Knowles, but she is finally ready to proclaim it to the world with the help of none other than director Clint Eastwood.
Deadline has the news that Knowles will be starring in the long-gestating Warner Bros. adaptation of the classic film(s) "A Star Is Born." Knowles has starred in several other musical adaptations ("Dreamgirls," "The Fighting Temptations," "Cadillac Records"), but this will unquestionably be her most high-profile film to date.
Eastwood is also no stranger to the musical genre, though he has been focusing more on directing gritty dramas in recent years. He's done everything from "Paint Your Wagon" to "Play Misty For Me" to "Honkytonk Man," and has scored many of his recent films, including "Mystic River," "Million Dollar Baby" and "Changeling."

Kyle has also collaborated with his father on composing film scores for Mystic River, Letters From Iwo Jima, Invictus and Gran Torino, to name a few. He’s one of Hollywood’s most recognisable stars, a respected director, and an accomplished musician, too. Glen salutes the finest scores of Clint Eastwood...
One of the most well respected actors and directors working today, Clint Eastwood has an enviable body of work to his credit. He is also quite vocal about his love of music, particularly jazz, which underpins much of directorial efforts, and country and western, which marked his debut album in 1959, Cowboy Favourites.
Whilst the album was far from a success, he has written a number of excellent pieces for films over the years including Honkytonk Man, City Heat, Heartbreak Ridge, A Perfect World, The Bridges Of Madison County, Qui, Absolute Power, True Crime, Space Cowboys, the piano compositions for In The Line Of Fire, and the excellent song that plays out during the credits of Gran Torino.

The actor and director is entering his ninth decade, What accounts for his astonishing professional longevity?
Gallery: 80 years of Clint in 80 pictures
Directors may occasionally be shown respect, perhaps even asked for their autograph, in America, but no one actually likes them. People may admire or envy James Cameron or Steven Spielberg or Francis Ford Coppola or Martin Scorsese, and a significantly smaller group of filmgoers may look forward to Woody Allen's next outing, but they don't have much of an emotional connection with them. This is what makes Clint Eastwood's career so singular.
Because he started out as an actor, and very quickly became an actor that a large segment of the population positively adored, in the same way that they adored Jimmy Cagney and Cary Grant and both Hepburns, Eastwood has long benefited from a personal relationship with the American people that no other living director can even dream of.

Jeff Bridges is outstanding as a washed-up country singer desperate to achieve personal and professional redemption, writes Philip French
Jeff Bridges, with his big, open, all-American face, has been a major presence on the screen for 40 years now, ever since becoming a star at the age of 22 as a small-town high-school senior in The Last Picture Show, a role for which he was Oscar-nominated as best supporting actor. In The Last Picture Show, Hank Williams figures prominently on the soundtrack and the film ends with Bridges seeing John Wayne in Red River before leaving for military service in the Korean war. So it's appropriate that the 60-year-old Bridges should have received an Oscar nomination for his ageing country singer in first-time writer-director Scott Cooper's Crazy Heart and is soon to play "Rooster" Cogburn in a remake of True Grit, the role that eventually brought John Wayne his only Oscar.

On February 16, 2010, Warner Bros. is planning to release a 19-disc collection of 35 films that were either acted, directed, or both, by Clint Eastwood. The package is entitled “Clint Eastwood: 35 Films, 35 Years at Warner Bros.,” and will contain features that span from 1968’s Where Eagles Dare to last year’s Gran Torino. The 35th film will be a short documentary by film critic Richard Schickel called “The Eastwood Factor,” which is a play on the original title for Invictus, which was “The Human Factor.”
“I’ve known Clint for most of the time he’s been at Warner Bros.,” said Schickel. “I was fortunate to be able to wander around the Warner lot with him and hear his reminiscences. So you've got The Dirty Harry Collection, The Man with No Name Trilogy and maybe one of the other previously released Clint Eastwood DVD box sets, but still you need more. More Clint. Well, you must be feeling pretty lucky, punk, because Warner Brothers have just announced plans to release a rather insane collection of Clint Eastwood's films early next year. Clint Eastwood: 35 Films 35 Years at Warner Bros will be a 19-disc set that covers all of his movies released through Warner Brothers between 1968 and 2008, starting with Where Eagles Dare and ending with Gran Torino. This is the kind of thing you usually only see years after someone has passed away, but we all know that Eastwood is still going strong. It's too bad they couldn't get this thing ready in time for Christmas though because I'm sure a lot of dads would probably love to see this under their tree.
