Audrey Hepburn is the absolute definition of classic Hollywood. The star of beloved films such as "Roman Holiday" and the criminally underseen "Wait Until Dark," she became the embodiment of the term movie star for decades until her passing in 1993. Perhaps no single movie embodies the greatness of Hepburn more than 1961's "Breakfast at Tiffany's." Based on Truman Capote's novel of the same name, director Blake Edwards helped turn Hepburn's Holly Golightly into a cinematic icon. Yet, amazingly enough, it's a role that Hepburn very nearly passed on.
Speaking to The New York Times in 1960, the actress discussed her role as a New York City socialite who was looking to marry a rich man only to find herself smitten by a writer. In the interview, Hepburn, who was coming off of "The Nun's Story" and "The Unforgiven," explained that she didn't believe she was right for the part. It...

Native American characters have been depicted in the movies since the dawn of Hollywood, but in 2024 an actual Native American actor has finally been nominated for an Academy Award.
Lily Gladstone (Blackfeet/Nimiipuu) has been a frontrunner all season for her performance in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, and on Tuesday morning she officially became a best actress Oscar nominee. Her predecessors in the category include Whale Rider’s Keisha Castle-Hughes (who is Maori) in 2004 and Roma’s Yalitza Aparicio (who is Native Mexican) in 2019, while other Indigenous nominated actors include Graham Greene (who is First Nations), nominated for best supporting actor in 1991 for Dances With Wolves, but Gladstone is the first Native American acting nominee.
With 1983 best song winner Buffy Sainte-Marie’s ancestry now in dispute, Gladstone could also now be tied for the first Native American Oscar nominee in any category. (Sainte-Marie was raised by...

Canadian Inuk singer-songwriter Elisapie has released a “bold, poignant and powerful” Inuktitut cover of Metallica’s “Unforgiven” in honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21st.
Her version, titled “Isumagijunnaitaungituq (The Unforgiven)”, is the third single off Inuktitut, Elisapie’s upcoming fourth solo album, out via Bonsound on September 15th. The emotionally charged adaptation pays tribute to the Inuit men of her community, and is also a nod to the time she interviewed Kirk Hammett, 60, from Metallica in the early ’90s.
“When I was 14 years old, I applied for a job at Tni, the first Inuit TV-radio broadcaster, and I was thrilled when I was chosen for the position! Everyone at the station dreamed big, and they put in a request for an interview with Metallica. The band was so loved in Salluit that we had to give it a shot,” said the Salluit, Quebec native, 46.

Elisapie, a Canadian Inuk singer-songwriter, plumbs new sadness in one of Metallica’s biggest, most emotional hits on her recording, “Isumagijunnaitaungituq (The Unforgiven).” Where the metal band drew inspiration from Ennio Morricone soundtracks, Spaghetti Westerns, and family trauma for the Black Album hit, Elisapie keeps things quiet, as she sings the lyrics in the indigenous Inuktitut. The instrumentation includes banjo, traditional drums, bass saxophone, throat singing, and saw, in addition to guitar and synth.

Yellow and black are the colors of caution signs, fallout shelters, and “Baby on Board” placards — warnings of imminent menace and catastrophe if you don’t get your shit together. So it’s fitting that Metallica would adopt the color scheme for the cover of 72 Seasons, their meditation of sorts on the cruelty of youth and the dangers of growing up. Those subjects are nothing new to them (see “The Unforgiven,” “Dyers Eve”), but now that frontman James Hetfield and his bandmates hover around age 60, they’re seeing their journey to adulthood differently.

Nearly ten years ago, Sandra Bullock pledged she would never again make a sequel to one of her many memorable movies.
It was 2013, the year she and Melissa McCarthy released the buddy cop comedy “The Heat” — which grossed nearly $230 million at the worldwide box office. While simultaneously making the awards rounds for “Gravity” that year, press relentlessly asked if she would return for a second film with McCarthy.
“I’m not doing a sequel to ‘The Heat,'” she said at the time. “I’ve done two sequels. They were horrible. What Melissa and I had was beautiful. We might do another film together. I think we should do a silent film together.”
Film fans and social media users connected the dots, and guessed the two “horrible” sequels Bullock was referring to: the followup to her star-making film “Speed,” which grossed only a third of the original’s domestic box...

The energy bouncing around San Francisco’s Chase Center for Metallica’s second 40th anniversary concert felt electric even before the band took the stage Sunday night. The first concert on Friday was all about anticipation — how could the thrash-metal pioneers commemorate their legacy in a fresh, exciting way? Well, that night they played a career-spanning set list in chronological order, blending big hits (“One,” “Nothing Else Matters”) with deep cuts (“Trapped Under Ice,” “Fixxxer”). Now that the group’s fans knew what to expect, Sunday night’s concert was all about catharsis.

This My Hero Academia review contains spoilers.
My Hero Academia Season 5 Episode 18
“The sole thing a person gets to choose impartially is how his life ends.”
The concepts of fate, justice, and agency are always crucial tenets in My Hero Academia, yet these principles are placed under intense scrutiny in “The Unforgiven” when a face from Endeavor’s past returns and threatens to destroy his heroic advancements. Whenever it seems like Endeavor’s redemption arc reaches a satisfying and cathartic conclusion there are suddenly more skeletons from his closet that tumble out that he needs to manage. This is worthwhile development for the tortured character and it’s enough to finally turn those that are ambivalent towards Endeavor into fans. This has been the subtext to the entire season, but it’s the driving force behind the events in “The Unforgiven,” which is of course a title that refers to Endeavor and his cavalier past.

Actor John Saxon, who specialized in playing celluloid tough guys, has died from pneumonia at age 83. Saxon grew up on the (then) mean streets of his native Brooklyn and became a model at age 17. He segued into feature films and television, winning acclaim for his performances. Saxon had the ability to use his charisma and good looks to portray both heroes and villains on screen, and did both convincingly. Major stardom never materialized for him but he had a long career as a popular supporting actor. Among his more notable films: "The Reluctant Debutante", "War Hunt", "The Electric Horseman", "The Unforgiven", "Joe Kidd", the original "Nightmare on Elm Street" and two sequels, "From Dusk Till Dawn", "Black Christmas", "Wrong is Right", "Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation" and "Battle Beyond the Stars". One of his most popular films was "Enter the Dragon", the final movie of Bruce Lee.

Above: Italian 4-fogli for Birdman of Alcatraz. Artist: Renato Casaro.Starting today with a week-long run of Robert Siodmak’s The Killers, New York’s Film Forum is hosting a 4-week, 37-film retrospective of one of the great he-men of Hollywood. With his square jaw, gymnast’s physique, and megawatt grin, Burt Lancaster (1913–1994) must have been a boon to movie poster artists and over the years he was drawn or painted by many great affichistes. I could have curated a post on just the Italian renditions of Lancaster alone: over the years he was painted by Ercole Brini, Anselmo Ballester, Luigi Martinati, Renato Casaro, Averardo Ciriello, and many more. To mark the retrospective I have selected 50 of my favorite illustrated images of the indelible star, from his brooding film noir youth (though he was actually 33 when he made his debut in The Killers), through his serious thespian mid-period to his...

Wow — a good Audie Murphy movie. Clair Huffaker’s screenplay should take credit, as well as the workmanlike direction of former Hitchcock assistant Herbert Coleman. Even John Saxon comes off well, plus the film can boast good work from favorites Zohra Lampert and Vic Morrow, and fine support from Rodolfo Acosta, Royal Dano and Lee Van Cleef.

Are “Green Room” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” Best Picture Oscar favorites because they won the Golden Globes’ top prizes? Maybe.
Or maybe not.
Though the Globes have been considered a leading bellwether for the Academy Awards, the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have agreed to disagree numerous times in major categories over the past 75 years.
In fact, the very first Golden Globes ceremony selected the religious drama “The Song of Bernadette” as the best film of 1943, while the Oscar for best picture went to the beloved “Casablanca.”
Even last year, Guillermo del Toro’s romantic fantasy “The Shape of Water” won four Oscars including best film and director. But the Globes chose “Lady Bird” for best picture musical or comedy and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” won best drama. Del Toro did win the Globe for director.

Earlier this month, Metallica played a rare acoustic benefit concert in San Francisco to raise money for their nonprofit All Within My Hands Foundation. They played a few hits that translated well to acoustic instruments (“Unforgiven,” “Nothing Else Matters”), reworked some classics to fit the format (“Disposable Heroes”) and attempted some unusual covers (Blue Öyster Cult’s “Veteran of the Psychic Wars” and Nazareth’s “Please Don’t Judas Me”). In an effort to raise more money for the charity, which recently donated $100,000 to relief efforts for fighting the California wildfires,...

Not all spy movies are like every other spy movie. And not all spies are the same. The Spy Gone North is an impressive, riveting spy thriller from Korea, made by filmmaker Yoon Jong-bin. This first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in their Midnight category earlier this summer, but I just caught up with the film at the Sitges Film Festival. The more I think about, the more I love this film. It's such a slick, superb spy film that draws you into the story and keeps you intrigued with anticipation, on the edge of your seat the entire time. And there isn't much action, which works well for this fascinating story, yet it's thoroughly compelling from start to finish. This film really stands out above so many others - in the way of spy films and thrillers. Yoon Jong-bin's The Spy Gone North ...

"His influence in the North is unimaginable." Cj Entertainment has just released a new full-length official trailer for a political thriller titled The Spy Gone North, which first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in the Midnight section earlier this summer. If you're into political thrillers, this is definitely a must see. The latest from Korean filmmaker Yoon Jong-bin, the double agent film follows a South Korean spy who infiltrates the North to obtain intelligence on the country's nuclear weapons plans in the mid-1990s. This stars Hwang Jung-min, Lee Sung-min, Cho Jin-woong, and Ju Ji-hoon. The new trailer is as intense and compelling as the first teaser previously, but with even more clarity. This seems like such a sneaky, complex noir thriller and I'm very curious to check it out myself. Here's the second official trailer (+ poster) for Yoon Jong-bin's The Spy Gone North, from Cj's YouTube: You...

The scene where the troops step back and the guy puts his hand up is chilling, I really want to see how that plays out from there. Get a first look below. Based on the testimony of infamous South Korean spy “Black Venus,” who once infiltrated the highest ranks of North Korean leadership, Yoon Jong-bin’s “The Spy Gone North” recounts a tortuous operation that’s more fascinating and far-fetched than many fictional espionage yarns. Instead of the usual dose of action and suspense one expects of this genre, watching this dense 140-minute political drama unfold is like fumbling through a long tunnel that’s nonetheless worth it when the ray of light emerges at the end. Though nowhere near as crowd-pleasing as the recent espionage action-fantasy “Steel Rain,” this well-crafted work deserves to be seen for its thorough account of intricate workings of secret service and political skullduggery.
After debuting with the violent and intense independent film “The Unforgiven,” which screened in Cannes’ Un certain regard section in 2005, Yoon went on achieve commercial success. Even so, a strain of social critique,...

North and South Korea tangle at the highest governmental levels in The Spy Gone North (Gongjak). Plotted less as spy story and more as political exposé, it’s closer to, say, a Watergate cover-up than your standard John Le Carrè. In addition, this lavish South Korean production directed by respected filmmaker Yoon Jong-bin (The Unforgiven) is charged with being a stylish, blood-pounding thriller of the type Asian cinema is so good at making. The film succeeds at being both exciting and character-driven, but only after a confused first half that leaves international viewers frustrated over who’s who and what’s going on.

The original Quinn the Eskimo (no kidding) is another life-loving rough portrait from Anthony Quinn, in Nicholas Ray’s rather successful final spin as a writer-director. Despite some technical awkwardness, Ray’s sensitivity to outsider souls finds full expression. Humans don’t get any more ‘outside’ than Inuk, a primitive unequipped to deal with the modern world.

William Wyler’s 1960s screwball heist comedy is a squeaky-clean high fashion vehicle for stars Audrey Hepburn and Peter O’Toole — who of course aren’t really crooks despite pulling off a major art theft. It’s lush, beautiful to look at and directed with verve by Wyler; with some funny jabs at the art world from screenwriter Harry Kurnitz.

The dividing line between a film being an homage and a rip-off is sorely tested with "Forsaken", a 2015 Canadian Western by director Jon Cassar, who is best known for his acclaimed, award-winning work in television. This is a rare venture into feature film making for him and the result left me with decidedly mixed emotions. The film marks another collaboration between Cassar and actor Kiefer Sutherland, who starred in Cassar's wildly successful TV series "24". That the two men are comfortable with each other's style is immediately apparent from the first frames of the film. We want to extend kudos to them for bravely venturing where few in the movie industry dare to tread any longer: the realm of the Western, a genre that has been routinely neglected for decades. Despite the success of Westerns such as "Unforgiven", "Dances With Wolves" and "Open Range", studio chiefs can't seem...

Samuel L Jackson as Major Marquis Warren in The Hateful Eight
Before Harvey Weinstein introduced "Quentin Tarantino's leading lady, Uma Thurman" at The Hateful Eight brunch with Jennifer Jason Leigh and Walton Goggins, I spoke with Samuel L Jackson on John Huston's The Unforgiven with Burt Lancaster, Audie Murphy and Audrey Hepburn and he charmingly reminded me of his evil character as the power behind Leonardo DiCaprio's throne in Django Unchained. Thurman and Jackson were in Pulp Fiction together, as was Tim Roth and she remembers the meeting that eventually led to Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and Kill Bill: Vol. 2. Jackson also starred in Jackie Brown and was the narrator in Inglourious Basterds.

Kino Lorber brings the infamous 1967 Spaghetti western Navajo Joe to Blu-ray, an overlooked gem of the genre that’s long been shadowed by its troubled reputation and the continual disparagement of its lead star, Burt Reynolds. In retrospect, this Italian/Spanish co-production promises to be a bit too politically incorrect to be taken seriously considering the casting of American star Reynolds as a Navajo Indian (he is, in fact, partly of Cherokee descent, though not enough to avoid the necessity of bronzer and a black wig).
It’s hardly the first or last time we’ve seen whitewashed casting of Native Americans (Audrey Hepburn in John Huston’s 1960 western The Unforgiven comes to mind), and to many the casting seems to compromise the integrity of the title. Instantly reviled and dismissed by Reynolds in his second starring role during his transition from television to film, it is, nevertheless, a very...

Durham, N.C. - During lunch a filmmaker tells me that of all the festivals he’s attended with his movies, the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival is the only one he wants to attend as a spectator. He enjoys how the various screens and activities aren’t spread all over the city. There’s a relaxed atmosphere as the festival-goers aren’t hustling hard to get tickets to sold out screenings. It’s a sweet Southern festival in the middle of Tobacco Road. Even the world’s biggest superstar just hangs out with the festival goers inside of hiding behind a wall of security.

Christopher McQuarrie has been hired by Gk Films to adapt the miniseries "Unforgiven," likely as a star vehicle for Angelina Jolie, reports Deadline . The original miniseries aired on ITV1 in 2009 and starred Suranne Jones as Ruth Slater, a convict responsible for a double homicide of two police officers who, upon her release from prison 15 years later, is targeted for revenge. The title Unforgiven was previously used for Clint Eastwood's 1992 Best Picture winner and it is likely that this project will find an alternate title (though the slight variation The Unforgiven had, before that, been used for a 1960 John Huston film). McQuarrie, best known for his screenplays to The Usual Suspects and Valkyrie , also wrote and directed 2000's The Way of the Gun ....

This week on Clip joint, we're hitting the tiles as greatpoochini clambers over the best film clips up on the roof
Panicking, protesting, prowling or seeking sanctuary – where would we be without a rooftop to clamber onto? Small wonder rooftops are such perfect settings for pivotal movie scenes. They even offer ready-made light sources, whether filled with sun or stars.
And what a view! Vistas of cities, vantage points for cross-haired surveillance, somewhere to hide but nowhere to run. Having someone clamber onto a roof invariably means that something exhilarating, dramatic, wistful or tragic is about to take place – unless, of course, they're making a documentary about tiles.
If a film needs a location to heighten the drama, then let's head to the roof. Powerful or terrified if we look down, desperate or free if we look up, the rooftop holds the boundary between heaven and earth. So this week's...

Joseph Wiseman, the Canadian-born actor best known for his deliciously evil portrayal of the James Bond villain, Dr. No, passed away yesterday at age 91. Wiseman appeared in a slew of Broadway productions, television shows, and movies such as Viva Zapata! with Marlon Brando and The Unforgiven with Burt Lancaster. But he will always be remembered for locking horns with Sean Connery's agent 007 in 1962's Dr. No. Wiseman's character, a mad scientist with an arsenal of fiendishly wry quips, a charter membership in Spectre, and a nasty atomic-powered radio-beam weapon, became the prototypical Bond villain. Later in his life, the...

James Bond's original nemesis Dr. No has died - the actor Joseph Wiseman passed away on Monday.
Wiseman played the metal-clawed, crazed scientist in the first ever 007 feature film in 1962, which starred Sean Connery and Ursula Andress.
He died aged 91 at his home in New York after a prolonged battle with ill health - almost eight months after his wife, modern dancer/choreographer Pearl Lang, died suddenly from a heart attack following hip surgery.
As well as his role as Dr. No, Wiseman featured in a string of films including Detective Story and The Unforgiven.
He also had guest roles in Law & Order, The Streets of San Francisco and The Twilight Zone.

Joseph Wiseman, who made screen history as the first 007 screen villain in the title role of Dr. No, has died at age 91. Wiseman was a distinguished name in both film and on stage, and remained active on Broadway in recent years. Only a few years ago, he had a major role in the revival of "Judgment at Nuremberg." Wiseman also had many other major films to his credit including The Night They Raided Minsky's, Detective Story and The Unforgiven. Wiseman rarely granted interviews, despite countless requests to discuss his role in Dr. No. On a personal note, back in the 1990s, I attended a New York film event at which Sean Connery was honored. To everyone's surprise, Joseph Wiseman was among the speakers and he reflected fondly on Dr. No. When a film clip was shown of Connery and Wiseman in the film, the audience went wild. He was a...
