Although it feels a bit long by the time the credits roll, Defiance manages to keep your attention thanks to strong performances from its main cast, an important and historical plot (or as close to historically accurate as Hollywood can get), and an explosive final action sequence. The film also looks great on Blu-ray with every detail crystal clear. Directed by Edward Zwick (who wrote the screenplay with Clayton Frohman), Defiance is based on the true story of the Bielski brothers and on the book Defiance: the Bielski Partisans by Nechama Tec. The film stars Daniel Craig (Quantum of Solace), Liev Schreiber (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Jamie Bell (Jumper), Alexa Davalos, and George MacKay. Described as an .action-packed, epic...

We here at ComicMix write about heroes all the time. They tend to be muscle-bound, wear spandex and appear in the fevered imaginations of writers and artists. In the real world, people are given the title hero when they are bystanders, victims, or their feats are fairly ordinary. As a result, the term has been somewhat watered down and in need of rehabilitation.
The process could have begun last winter when two movies about World War II were released, featuring very different kinds of heroes. Neither Valkyrie nor Defiance made a lot of noise at the box office nor did they ignite a debate over the nature of heroism in times of war. And that’s a shame, really, since in the former, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, was a patriot, a German who saw Hitler for the devil he was and risked everything to take him down, paying for it with his life.

Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber and the cast of 'Defiance' defied the cold in New York City for a special screening of their WWII action biopic Monday night, and both stars made it a date night with their significant others! New parents for the second time Liev and Naomi Watts definitely had their baby son Samuel (born December 13) on their minds, while Daniel arrived with girlfriend Satsuki Mitchell on his arm. On the red carpet, Daniel took time to reflect on the sudden passing of John Travolta and Kelly Preston's 16-year-old son, Jett, saying, "Condolences, obviously, but it's an impossible situation to imagine." In theaters everywhere Friday, 'Defiance' finds Daniel, Liev and Jamie Bell as Eastern European Jewish brothers in 1941 who band together for survival and end up avenging the deaths of their loved ones while saving countless others during World War II. 'Defiance'...

After the feast of holiday offerings, there's but a meager smattering on offer for a New Year nibble. This week brings two brand spanking new holocaust movies for anyone who still has the stomach (after the other four released in past weeks) or as a tasty alternative you can enjoy some bloody murder in the former Soviet Union or some bloody murder right here in the good ol' U.S. of A. You decide.
"Angel's Blade"
Depending on your tolerance for ultra low-budget horror, writer/director Robert Stock's debut feature will either delight with its copious amounts of corn syrup-enhanced gore or look like someone had a camcorder out during an intense Halloween-themed session of Larp. Inspired by a supernatural encounter that spooked his infant son while idling on a lonely road one night, Stock was inspired to create this dark legend involving a young girl's spirit haunting the backwoods,...

The latest James Bond film "Quantum of Solace" grossed an impressive $70.4 million estimate on its debut weekend for Sony/MGM. Daniel Craig returned as James Bond in 3,451 venues and averaged a massive $20,400 per theatre. "Quantum of Solace" becomes the biggest Bond opener ever, 63% better in fact than "Casino Royale," which marked Craig's first appearance as 007. The film is currently placed as the fifth biggest-ever November opener almost on par with Disney/Pixar's "The Incredibles" at $70.467 million, although this will most likely change with the latter falling below. A remarkable feat indeed as all top November openers are either "Harry Potter" films (the first three rankings) or animated. Family genres rule the month. Second placed "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" from DreamWorks/Paramount showed a 43% change in its sophomore weekend at play with $36.1 million. The sequel animation passed $118 million. In third, surprise hit comedy "Role Models" which has enjoyed good word of mouth push,...

Fact: Production took place in the little known country (for Hollywood movies) of Lithuania. See It: I'm not a Zwick fan, but the material on which this is based upon is intriguing to say the least. It will be nice to see Daniel Craig back to back as Bond and then in a less "suave" role.
