If Heat and The Insider are agreed upon as Michael Mann’s all-time best films, what is the director’s most underrated feature to date? Is it Thief? The Keep? Manhunter? Public Enemies? Nah. There’s only one acceptable answer: 2004’s criminally overlooked nocturnal neo-noir Collateral. Featuring a rare villainous turn by Tom Cruise and a restrained Oscar-nominated performance by Jamie Foxx, the L.A. crime story was the first film in history to utilize the Viper FilmStream High Definition Camera. The digital format that David Fincher would later adopt for use on Zodiac and Benjamin Button. Beyond the cutting-edge technology, the remote locations Mann and his production team gave viewers a much different glimpse of Los Angeles away from the glamor of Hollywood and into the seedy, sinister parts of town rarely seen on the big screen.

Ultraman is back.
The character, created by Eiji Tsuburaya in 1966 with the “Ultra Q” and “Ultraman” television series, is back in a brand-new animated feature called “Ultraman Rising.” It’s due out next year but you can watch the trailer above.
In “Ultraman Rising,” baseball superstar Ken Sato, the new Ultraman, “quickly finds more than he bargained for as he’s forced to raise the offspring of his greatest foe,” according to the official synopsis. The trailer shows him battling a huge monster and then effectively adopting the monster’s child, which puts him at odds with his persona as creature-slaying titan. There’s a wonderful moment in the trailer where Ken shrinks down to his human size but the baby still towers above him.
The voice cast for the animated feature includes Christpher Sean, Gedde Watanabe, Tamlyn Tomita, Keone Young and Julia Harriman. Shannon Tindle, creator of Netflix’s fantastic “Lost Ollie,...

After seven years of toil and trouble, a cancelation by Disney, and resurrection by Annapurna and Netflix, Nd Stevenson’s Nimona is finally ready to make a splash on the small screen. Nimona is a larger-than-life tale of identity, othering, acceptance, and finding ways to stand out in a world that fears what it does not understand. In the film, a knight in a futuristic, medieval world is framed for a crime he didn’t commit. The only one who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona — a mischievous teen who happens to be a shapeshifting creature he’s sworn to destroy. With brilliant animation from Dneg, Nimona leaps off the screen with style, vibrant colors, and attitude.

For 55 years, “Ultraman” has been one of Japan’s A-list superheroes — defending the planet from alien kaiju and inspiring all manner of global pop culture, from the “Power Rangers” to Paul Rudd’s “Ant-Man” suit. But while the character has a loyal following outside of Japan, Ultraman has never become a massive crossover phenomenon at the scale of Godzilla or Pokémon.
Netflix is hoping to change that.
The streamer is partnering with Tsuburaya Productions to develop “Ultraman” as a CG-animated feature film aimed at bringing a new, wider audience to the beloved silver-suited character. The director of The Shallows, Jaume Collet-Serra, is set to direct a feature film based on the disastrous 1993 events of Waco, Texas. The project is set up at Annapurna Pictures and it seems like a great project for the director to take on.
The story will center around a standoff between the FBI and Texas state law enforcement and the Branch Davidians cult. The siege lasted 51 days and by the time it was over, 76 people were killed including the cult's leader David Koresh. The whole thing started when the group was suspected of weapons violations. When the Atf attempted to raid the ranch, all hell broke loose.
The script was written by Mark Boal and Marc Haimes, who also wrote the incredible stop-motion animated film Kubo and the Two Strings. So we know that the script is going to be good.

Our film staff was less than impressed with Jaume Collet-Serra’s last genre offering, 2016’s woman-versus-giant-shark thriller The Shallows. (Reviewer Ignatiy Vishnevetsky compared it unfavorably to Collet-Serra’s earlier entry in the “Liam Neeson shoots people” genre, Non-Stop.) Now, Deadline reports that Collet-Serra is moving away from gimmicks and man-eating predators and into the real world, having been tapped to direct a film based on the deadly Waco siege of 1993.
Written by Zero Dark Thirty’s Mark Boal and Kubo And The Two Strings’ Marc Haimes, Waco hopes to tell the story of the 51-day Texas stand-off between government forces and members of David Koresh’s Branch Davidian group, which ended with a lethal fire and 76 people dead. Considering his proclivity for B movies, Jaume Collet-Serra hasn’t quite received the widespread admiration he’s deserved for directing genre movies with a genuine sense of vision and momentum. Following a trio of films with Liam Neeson (and a fourth on the way), along with one of the best summer movies of last year, The Shallows, he is now finally looking to enter a new arena with his next project.
Deadline is reporting he’s teaming with Annapurna for Waco, which depicts the bloody 1993 standoff in Texas that left 76 people dead across 51 days. There’s major pedigree behind the script as it’s penned by Mark Boal (Zero Dark Thirty, The Hurt Locker) and Kubo and Marc Haimes (Kubo and the Two Strings). With production aiming to begin later this year, casting is gearing up with lead roles for cult leader David Koresh and the FBI agents against him.

Chicago – It’s that time of the film year, the “Ten Best” lists. In representing my 2016 picks – as “Patrick McDonald” – I looked for the emotional experience as much as anything. I think every filmgoer, from the most casual to the ardent buff, adhere to their favorites through that feeling of connection.
There are honorable mentions all over the place, often just missing the 10th spot – I like to characterize them as all tied for eleventh. My favorite superhero film was “Captain America: Civil War,” for the Marvel Comics angst that works best in this genre of movies. The dramas “Arrival,” “Elle,” “Little Men” and “A Monster Calls” were excellent and heartfelt experiences. I loved the wacky tribute that writer/directors Joel and Ethan Coen gave to 1950s Hollywood in “Hail, Caesar!” And after watching it again after initial reservations, I realized and connected to the ardent celebration in the musical “La La Land.

Last year IndieWire shared free scripts available to download from 2016 Oscar Contenders such as “Carol,” “Spotlight,” and “Room,” among others. Since 2009, the stop-motion animation studio Laika has made a name for itself by producing some of the most acclaimed animated films of the last few years. Their films “Coraline,” “ParaNorman” and “The Boxtrolls” all garnered acclaim for their visual style and all have been nominated for Oscars. Their latest film “Kubo and the Two Strings” follows a one-eyed boy who must locate a magical suit of armor in order to defeat a vengeful spirit. Before its home video release, check out an exclusive behind the scenes clip that delves inside the film’s costume design with Laika designer Deborah Cook.

Magic, music, and monsters come together to create a marvelous new fairy tale in stop-motion house Laika’s stunning Kubo and the Two Strings. In a fantasy ancient Japan, 11-year-old Kubo (the voice of Art Parkinson: San Andreas) earns a few coins to care for his ailing mother by telling epic tales in the village square: with the strum of his lute, he can send origami papers flying into the air and folding themselves to animate and illustrate his stories. Chicago – In our short lives, what do we most need? It’s a hard question to answer sometimes, but the new animated film “Kubo and the Two Strings” does a memorable job of answering the query. The journey of Kubo, like Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz,” leads to a place where he needs to go.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
I don’t want to compare “Kubo” to anything else, although it was done by the same animation house (Laika Entertainment) that gave us “Coraline,” “ParaNorman” and “The Boxtrolls,” and succeeds by having a simple story akin to “Finding Dory.” But where it excels beyond all those examples is in a cumulative glory – it uses the simplicity of origami, Kabuki theater, the Samurai tradition and Japanese prints to establish a atmosphere that is sometimes stunning in its grace. While the character Kubo does have a typical good versus evil conundrum, the use of...

While I think all animation is a magic trick that remains just as impressive now as the first time I saw it as a child, there are certainly levels of difficulty, and stop-motion animation is a special kind of lunacy. I’ve visited enough stop-motion sets to be awed by the skill set it requires for someone to effectively bring a character to life using such a difficult and painstaking method. It is sincerely meant then as praise when I say that I can’t imagine the single-minded pursuit of vision it took to bring Kubo and the Two Strings to life, and Travis Knight is, indeed, a madman. Travis Knight is, like Megan Ellison, a rich kid doing something profoundly interesting with the position of privilege they found themselves in. Ellison has fascinating taste as a producer, and she’s become a sort of life raft for filmmakers who...

Chicago – One of the great benefits of the new Golden Age of Animation has been the emergence of other studios…like Laika Entertainment, which has released “Coraline,” “ParaNorman” and “The Boxtrolls,” all nominated for Oscars. Travis Knight directs their latest stop-motion style animated film, “Kubo and the Two Strings.”
“Kubo” is rooted in Japanese samurai myth, but is a wholly new story. A baby loses an eye in a great battle, but his mother manages to save him. In exile, the two live near the ocean, and the baby grows to the boy Kubo, who supports his mother by going into the village with a magical string instrument. With it, he is able to conjure stories that use the style and look of paper folding origami. His magic is drawing attention, from both good and evil sorcery. Staggeringly beautiful and immensely true, the best animated film of 2016 — one of the year’s best films of any kind, really — is a stop-motion fable about a one-eyed boy in mythical Japan that was made by a team of gifted visionaries in an Oregon warehouse. Laika, the independent studio behind morbid enchantments like “Coraline” and “ParaNorman,” has already established itself as a formidable bulwark against the ever-accelerating onslaught of computer-generated 3D cartoons, but “Kubo and the Two Strings” makes even the most painstaking of their previous movies feel like a trial run.
A Kurosawa-inspired epic about the supreme power of storytelling, Laika’s largest movie to date is also their most emotionally acute. It may not be as grim as “Coraline” (though some of its villains are the stuff of nightmares), or as pungent as “The Boxtrolls” (though a sequence involving freshly diced fish will make you crave a post-screening...

While there’s a distinct novelty to all of their work — whether it’s based on books by Neil Gaiman or Alan Snow — Laika have returned to genuinely original material with their fourth animation. This time around, the company’s CEO and lead animator on their first trio of films, Travis Knight, makes his directorial debut with Kubo and the Two Strings. Steeped in the mythology and fables of Japanese history, it’s another fantastical adventure from the studio with innovation and awe at every turn, despite a story that could benefit from having more specificity and focus.
The tale centers on Kubo (Art Parkinson), a young boy tending to his ailing mother and living near an ancient Japanese village. As the opening scene shows us, she wields magical powers that depleted in a fight and were partially transferred to her son. Years later, he spends his days earning attention...

Though animated (and more generally, children’s) films now get into theaters with great regularity, few of them manage the kind of pure wonder headed your way on August 19th.
Kubo and the Two Strings has already shown us several trailers, and while this one is something of a “teaser summary commercial” as opposed to something that shows off a lot that is actually new, I can’t get enough of this film, so I’ll take it.
Though, as I said, this one doesn’t give you a lot that you didn’t catch in the previous trailers, it does wrap up the combination of styles and thematic points.
It’s a story that finds nothing too bizarre, or downright nonsensical, with a hero who is a little bit of everything, and, in a world of immense dangers… rather wee.
Though there is much that makes this film worthy of recommendation (the voice cast,...

In terms of Hollywood animation, no studio comes close to the level of detail and texture found in the films of Laika. Perhaps it has to do with their foundation of stop-motion animation compared to the reliance of CG from the likes of Pixar and DreamWorks, but with every film they’ve delivered something different, and beautiful. After the wonderful trio of Coraline, ParaNorman, and The Boxtrolls, the animation company is back with Kubo and the Two Strings, this time CEO Travis Knight helming solely.
Coming from an original script by Marc Haimes and Chris Butler (ParaNorman) the stop-motion/CGI hybrid (like their last work) is described as a sweeping, swashbuckling adventure set in a mythical ancient Japan. With a voice cast featuring Art Parkinson, Matthew McConaughey, Charlize Theron, Rooney Mara, Ralph Fiennes, George Takei, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, and Brenda Vaccaro, the final trailer has now arrived, along with a set of beautiful posters.

Gods and monsters await in the magical new trailer for Kubo and the Two Strings, Travis Knight’s hotly-anticipated animation that is arriving by way of Laika and Focus Features.
As the studio behind such instant animated classics as Coraline and ParaNorman, there’s a crackle of excitement going into the release of Kubo, particularly considering that the feature acts as Knight’s directorial debut. He’ll be flanked by Laika alum Marc Haimes and Chris Butler, who penned the script for this summer’s swashbuckling epic.
Centering on the magical journey of the title hero (played by Game of Thrones actor Art Parkinson), Kubo and the Two Strings opens with our kindhearted and humble protagonist caring for an ageing mother. But when he inadvertently summons an ancient spirit from the past, he recruits a crack team of adventurers, including Monkey (Charlize Theron) and Beetle (Matthew McConaughey).

It’s hard to believe that another South by Southwest Film Festival is almost upon us, and this year’s lineup is yet another stellar collection of indie films, shorts, documentaries and experiential projects from all over the world. As we prepare to bring our readers extensive coverage over the next week from Austin, here’s a look at the 11 genre-related films and TV shows we’re excited to check out during the festival, which begins on Friday, March 11th.
[Writer’s Note: During Sundance 2016, this writer had the privilege of covering two great genre films: Under the Shadow from Babak Anvari and Mickey Keating’s Carnage Park. Since I had the chance to catch both of these films back in January, I decided it wouldn’t be fair to include them here in my preview piece (however, genre fans attending SXSW should definitely check out both films during the fest, as they are equally incredible).]
In a Valley of Violence (Director/Screenwriter: Ti West)
Festival Synopsis: From Blumhouse, the film tells the story of a drifter named Paul who arrives in a small town, seeking revenge on the thugs who murdered his friend. Sisters Mary Anne and Ellen, who run the town’s hotel, help Paul in his quest for vengeance. Cast: Ethan Hawke, Taissa Farmiga, James Ransone, Karen Gillan, John Travolta (World Premiere)

It looks like we won't be getting another DC Comics TV Show as TNT has decided to cancel Teen Titans. Read on for more information.
The beloved characters of the Teen Titans franchise won't be gracing the small screen of TNT, anymore. Today, it was announced that the DC drama won't be greenlit, after all. This comes as a surprise as TNT President Kevin Reilly had initially said to TV Line, after meeting with the show's co-creator Akiva Goldsman,
"I think it’s going to end up being a very, very interesting offering, I think it’s going to be excellent.”
Months later, Reilly has changed his tune stating,
“We decided it wasn’t where we wanted to go,”.
TNT had only ordered a pilot, so this isn't a huge loss to the network. However, this news comes as a bummer to the fans excited for Teen Titans to get an actual live action show.

While fans of DC Comics properties are certainly enjoying an embarrassment of riches when it comes to seeing their favorite heroes dominate the small screen, sometimes disappointment abounds. We now have word that TNT has chosen not to move forward with the live action Titans TV series. As unfortunate as the news is, it should not come as too much of a shock since it has been nearly a year since any real news has been reported regarding the ill fated series.
It seemed the network was originally enthused about proceeding with the series’ development when TNT president Kevin Reilly told TV Line the following last May:
“I think it’s going to end up being a very, very interesting offering. I think it’s going to be excellent.”
More recently, Reilly said these heartbreaking words at TCA:
“We decided it wasn’t where we wanted to go.”
Had the series come to fruition,...

The world of superheroes on the small screen won't be expanding on TNT. In his first executive session as the president of TNT and TBS, Kevin Reilly revealed Thursday at Television Critics Association's winter press tour that the former network has passed on superheroes-to-be drama Titans. "We just decided it wasn’t quite where we wanted to go," he said. The project, from Warner Horizon Television and DC Comics, also had high-profile names attached in Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind) and Marc Haimes. { "nid": 732352, "type": "blog", "title": "DC Comics Superhero Drama 'Titans' Near Pilot Order
