Another for my list of doomed love....
27 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Such a tragically romantic movie. Welles, Colbert and Brent are as good as they get for this genre. Add to my list of Brief Encounter, Remains of the Day, and others where being noble outweighs the emotion that may only come once in a lifetime because of wrong time/wrong place. Colbert has certainly had a happy life, but for the memories of what could have been had her husband returned from the war. When he does reappear, and she seems to want him back, he does remind her that what was simply isn't anymore - she needs to live in the present for those she loves (and who love her) now. A true tearjerker.

Add this to my list of movies that.....
3 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
If I said anymore in my subject, it would contain spoilers. So here it comes....

Another movie that has what I call unfulfilled love. For whatever reason (in this case, a man who decides to (with medical assistance and legally) end his own life), love that doesn't make it to the finish line. (Think Brief Encounter, Remains of the Day, The Fault in Our Stars) I see where some people think it is a terrible message to romanticize assisted suicide be cause this man's life just wasn't what he thought it should be. Did they see the same movie?? It is clearly stated that he is in pain all the time, and his health is so frail that he gets pneumonia quite frequently. He had plenty to live for with the exception of his declining health, so he was suffering and would only get worse. That said, this is a sweet movie that allows the stars to shine in the way they express the precious thing called time and how to use it, even finitely. Not the best movie ever made, but a true tear-jerker. That he thought to provide for her and her dreams after his death was a nice surprise - showing that love comes in all forms and can keep making memories no matter what.

Liked it just enough
6 June 2020
Not the best vampire film, not the worst. Very atmospheric. I appreciated the occasional jolts of "ick" (okay, maybe not the first one, when the soldier is being tested with the synthetic blood - really ICK). Not sure this movie is worth worrying about whether it is a good one or not - just watch on a rainy day and move on.

5 Stars, only for lead performance, but just barely
6 June 2020
I waited for something to happen. Really happen. I actually like movies where "nothing happens, and that is what is happening", so I am patient and observant. I really didn't know what to expect (I am not part of the DC Universe at all), but this left me wanting something other than Joaquin Phoenix's performance. This is a 30 minute plot in a 2 hour movie, and brought to mind plot lines and characters from two other De Niro films, The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver. For all the folks who gave this a big 10 out of 10, or called it a "masterpiece", good for you - this is your thing.

Love it or hate it?
26 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Seems this film is incredibly polarizing - people either love it or hate it, with a few straddling the fence. I happen to lean toward the "love it" camp with a couple reservations along the way. I hate the repetitive "melodic theme" soundtrack. It is haunting and nice for the first few minutes, but then just kind of grinds on me. The other part I find distracting is the plot line of Claire Dane's character when she stops taking her medication for depression. She is an incredibly intelligent person who should know better. But then, a chunk of the movie would be lost - and the sympathy and caring Martin's character shows her (hinting that he really does care for her) would also be lost. I am not one of the people who thinks she is knowingly accepting all his gifts to get what she can. I saw her accepting presents graciously and with a youthful enthusiasm, not calculated and greedy. I DO think she takes the gifts thinking they mean more than they do, emotionally - she has truly grown to care for him (hence the upset when he sleeps with someone else). I also don't think he is giving her things to "buy" her - it is just his way (and he knows it). I would submit this movie as one of those "When is something going to happen? Oh, it just did" kind of films. I don't see the age difference as an issue, either - it takes all kinds to find all kinds in life and in love.

How about what leaves us hanging?
11 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, so this was a fun movie for me, and everyone who reviews it has an opinion. But here's what spoiled my complete enjoyment - the way it ended with Andy and Nate, and their living arrangements. This is NYC, expensive and hard to get an apartment NYC. And yet, after she returns from "taking a break" in Paris, where is she living? Nate stays in NYC until his move to Boston (assuming he is still in "their" apartment), and she stays in NYC to get a job, not to work on their relationship. So where did Andy go when she left Nate? She couldn't afford her rent sharing with him (remember, her father gave her money for "rent" when they were sharing), so how is she living? I know this may seem silly to some, but this little plot hole is distracting. And why didn't she communicate with him to see if they could work things out (and maybe move with him to Boston)? But now, he says maybe they CAN work things out. Does she need to find her own way and take the NYC job? Yes. So much for working it out. Another distraction. So while I really like this movie, don't care for the ending at all.

How quickly an afternoon can go by...
26 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this on TCM last evening - and the nearly 2 hours blew by as I watched, totally mesmerized. I know of Loren and Mastroianni as a team, but had shamefully never watched one of their films. I am glad I started with this one; this is not a comedy or a conventional love story, but a subtle and touching story of two people in need of something neither one can have without great sacrifice - Mastroianni having to stay away from his lover and then be deported from Italy for being gay, and Loren having to endure a pig of a husband to breed children for a fascist regime. They find each other, and for one afternoon take comfort - knowing they will never have another. I love when Mastroianni tells Loren that just because he is gay doesn't mean he can't make love to a woman - but for her to remember it doesn't change who he is (re: He can love her, but not LOVE her for any kind of future as a couple). And how Loren accepts this moment as the escape from her horrific life that she can return to over and over in her memories. I will add this film to my list of unrequited love (Remains of the Day, Brief Encounter, etc.), but with a twist.

Can't enjoy this one
20 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I have tried to watch this several times. It was on today, and I thought I would take another shot at it. I am a fan of Fred Astaire and Leslie Caron - but not together in this movie. The movie itself is not very good - it seems to try too hard to be a MGM musical and simply isn't. I cringed at the Shue Foot number where Fred wades into a sea of college kids to dance with his love interest, Leslie. That is where the "Ick Factor" really got me. I know age difference movies are all over the place (like Sabrina with Bogart and Hepburn, Love in the Afternoon with Cooper and Hepburn, Funny Face with Astaire and Hepburn - WOW, is there a pattern here?? LOL), but for some reason this one gets me most of all because it is because she was a teenager who had a sponsor to fund her college = this seems a little creepy. Just did not like the movie as a whole - but if you do, then okay.

Wow, how bad can it get?
18 October 2019
I tried to watch this movie twice. Couldn't do it. SO bad. Acting, script, premise that was a tough sell to begin with and only made worse. With all the star power in the cast and direction, I thought it would be better. I won't even go into the plot as others have, and if you liked this movie - well, there's all kinds of taste out there!

Not SO bad, just not good.
13 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I see all the bad ratings for this movie, and don't get it. Of COURSE it has an idiot plot (Siskel and Ebert bemoaned them all the time!) that could have been resolved in the first five minutes, but then there wouldn't have been a movie. That said, it was a lesson in standing up for what you want - and unfortunately, hurting people along the way might just happen, if not intentionally. I did cringe a bit at Kate Hudson's self-righteousness when she finds out her friend and boyfriend have been together when SHE got pregnant from her affair... And yes, I wonder how 20-30 somethings afford apartments in NYC that must be $7000+ a month, based on what I have seen online. Final opinion is this is an okay little movie that I didn't mind watching.

What fun for a city girl!
15 July 2019
I discovered this show about a year and a half ago. I don't know how I missed it! These guys are not only talented in their chosen craft, but where else can you see "hillbillies" quoting Shakespeare and being intellectually "punny"? I binge watched a couple of Saturdays to catch up (thank you DIY and GAC networks!), and now I wait for Sunday night for new episodes. I know more about barns and log cabins than I ever imagined I would. There is at least one other "log cabin" show similar to this - but it doesn't compare to this crew. A real bright spot on TV!

Sad re-pairing of Hepburn and Holden
25 May 2019
I see where loads of people like this movie - as a parody of Hollywood movie writing. I will give them that, even though I don't agree. I watched this years ago and didn't like it then - too silly, and the script and acting just seemed forced, not amusingly frantic. I read the book about Holden and Hepburn's romance, and watched this again - to see how my point of view might have changed - and all I saw now was the same movie but with the sadness of a broken romance, and a bad movie to make it even sadder. Watch it and decide for yourself, but I can't recommend it as anything but a curiosity.

Magnetic - Beautiful - Sad
16 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I have seen Brief Encounter more times than I know for sure. It is on TCM for the preface to the Oscars. I wasn't going to watch it, but I was drawn in, as always. This is film making. Real film making, not like most of the the stuff we tolerate today. That two "average" people meet by chance and fall in love is a plot to which all of us other average people relate. That these two can have a most passionate love affair without actually having sex is a tribute to the writing, direction and the acting. I tear up every time I watch, knowing the ending but still hoping for them to somehow stay together. Yes, they are committing "adultery" - but they have lived the stayed and somewhat boring stereotypical British life and find a glimmer of passion in spite of it. I recommend this film to anyone who wants a true experience in classic film making.

WOW. And I don't say that lightly....
26 January 2019
They Shall Not Grow Old is truly an achievement in technology making history live again. I had heard about it, seen the trailer - but was concerned I would not see it on the big screen because of the limited release I thought was only in a few cities and then done. I, by sheer luck, got an email from a website I visit that let me know Fathom Events was taking it to other cities for a day each - and amazingly enough, it was showing in my small Indiana city! That there wasn't more promotion of this through media astounds me. There were only about 40 people at my showing, with two additional times (I hope the audience was bigger at those). That said..... This film takes WWI footage and makes it fresh and enthralling to see. The method of making the narration from interviews of vets of that war and fitting snippets of those into the scenes that were carefully culled from 100 hours of footage was wonderful. Peter Jackson explains the process in the mini-doc that follows the film, and those thirty minutes are almost as entertaining as the main feature. Many people may go to see this expecting only the colorization to be the technological highlight, but are they in for a surprise at how the grainy, jerky hand-cranked footage is transformed. I have bored several of my friends going on and on about this film, which is a once in a lifetime event. Thanks to Peter Jackson for rising to the occasion and fulfilling the request of the British Imperial War Museum to do something "different" with their resources. Side bar: My grandfather and his two brothers fought in Europe in this war, and one died in France. Seeing the British soldiers living what my great-uncle must have suffered made this an even more significant film for me. I would recommend the big screen - it is also in a very subtle 3D, which worked nicely. I think I have rattled on again..... a BIG 10 stars to this wonderful document of an important time that should not be forgotten.

Free movie weekend - so I watched this
23 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I so wanted to like this movie. I am a sucker for the slow paced, mature love story between real adults. And I like Patricia Clarkson. This was a travelogue for Cairo and not much else, I am afraid. I waited for the chemistry between the two friends to evolve into something more intense and (yes) physical, because I thought it would be appropriate here, knowing they would never see each other again, and they would at least have this moment. But the writing stayed stagnant - and when maybe just the dialogue could be been more intense and sophisticated, it wasn't. It is a very pretty film to look at, and that is what got the four stars.

Lovers in their 40's - how refreshing!
3 September 2018
The Thomas Crown Affair is a "remake" of the Steve McQueen/Faye Dunaway hipster movie that in my opinion wasn't very good. Sorry for all you fans. That one was pretentious and tried too hard to be "groundbreaking". That said, this version is smart, mature, and makes us wonder what is around the next corner for these two characters - who are too slick for their own good sometimes. I appreciate the honesty that two grown-ups with careers and money are still trying to find themselves - and find love in each other. I liked the Denis Leary character, too - he shows some humanity through his cynicism. Oh, and the art caper is good, too....

Found this channel surfing, couldn't stop watching
2 September 2018
There are two plot lines to this film. The first is the aging author, the subject of a student's Master's thesis, who is searching for his last best seller, and has mostly become a recluse. The other involves the author's 40-something daughter and her back-again boyfriend, and her search for the meaning to the rest of her life. Langella is solid in his performance as he attempts to write his last great novel, while being distracted by the grad student - who turns out to use him in more ways than just to get her thesis material. The other actors are true to their characters, as well. There is some light at the end of the tunnel at the close of the film, so all the pain of relationships and life we witness does get some redemption - but be prepared. You have to get through a lot of sad first.

A bit silly, but enjoyable
18 August 2018
I liked this movie. Yes, the plot has holes. Yes, the actions of the characters are a bit on the implausible side. But it still has me interested in seeing what is going to happen next, which is one measure of a movie I think is worth watching. The ending ties things up too neatly and quickly, but by that time, I am okay with it. I like the chemistry between Cher and Quaid. Seeing a young Liam Neeson is nice, too. I hadn't seen this in a long time, and it was on TV this afternoon - and I was reminded of how it is a nice couple hours of not having to think too hard. Nothing wrong with that!

Still waiting for something to happen
15 July 2018
I am not typically a fan of Stephen King movies, at least not the ones designed to be "scary" over the more thoughtful ones (like The Green Mile). I had seen the older version of "It" and thought it was at least creepy with Pennywise, and had the psychological part with the adults coming home to face their past. So, I went into this one (with all the hype that came before it) thinking it would be an updated scarier, creepier, more thought-provoking version. Boy, was I wrong. This movie was kind of boring. Not very creepy - especially after all the anticipation of the new Pennywise - he was almost laughable in some scenes. I can't say I jumped even once out of surprise, which I expected I would. I knew what was going to happen ahead of time more than a few times. The kids were fine with the material they had to work with. I kept looking at my watch, waiting for the adult portion of the movie, when they come back and face the past - but turned out that is a sequel. Maybe that one will be better now that the plot is set up? I don't have high hopes.

Still thinking about it.....
10 July 2018
I had heard of this movie, knew it involved BDSM, that was about it. There was enough character development to care about them, even the lawyer as we worked through getting more insight about him. The idea of the secretary being taken totally off guard by her first spanking was a little jarring, though. Otherwise, an interesting study in the evolution of the secretary into the lawyer's world, and the lawyer not knowing how to deal with someone who embraced his way of thinking. I have read several other reviews, and have not found one that thought this role was a quirkier warm-up to Spader's character of Alan Shore on Boston Legal..... I liked the movie, but see how it wouldn't be for everyone.

Waste of time - and talent
3 July 2018
I love The Philadelphia Story, so this movie had big shoes to fill. That said, this is a terrible movie based on a good one, and would be a mediocre movie even if I knew nothing about The Philadelphia Story. I will base my review knowing it came from The Philadelphia Story. All the edge and wit of the original are GONE. The changes made to the plot and dialogue took them away. So, when the plot/dialogue returns word for word to the original, it loses its impact. And the songs are sadly distracting and just not all that impelling for the story. Sorry, Cole Porter. Lastly, the acting is really not that good. Grace Kelly overacts, Bing Crosby barely acts, and Frank Sinatra waits for another reason to sing. All from people we know are better. I watched this because I knew I should, and wished I hadn't. For those who gave it a glowing review, or even a decent one - well, okay. Just not something I could do. It has been running on Turner Classic Movies, and I watched it again (or tried to) to make sure my memory still served me correctly - and it did. (Insert cringing here...)

Moments of true funny, and okay if you like predictable
1 June 2018
UPDATE: I watched this again, and disliked it more than I did when I rated it a FIVE. I am changing my rating to a THREE, and that is being nice. I guess I was trying to be politically correct toward the past middle-age demographic (of which I am one) , but this is just so bad I can't do it. This is my original review: I really wanted to love this movie. I like all the leads, and all the supporting actors. But.... four of the most stereotypical beyond middle-age characters with stereotypical issues I could have predicted a mile away. Yes, there were funny moments, but just not enough to carry the whole movie. Candice Bergen was the best of the four, and even she made me cringe sometimes. Her scenes with Richard Dreyfuss were the most touching and sincere (and funny). I am not sure what new material there is for this "generation" - but this just seemed to miss the mark for me. I went with a group of also-middle-age-friends, and we did enjoy it - so my 5 stars will be mostly for that.

Good, but with holes?
7 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I liked this movie. I am glad I went to see it at the theater, because the "effect" intended needs to be experienced in that setting. I have read many reviews, and not one has mentioned any similarity to the movie "Signs" with Mel Gibson - not that this is a movie that merits a direct comparison. Its premise is a good one, and holds up. I just wondered about a few things. Where did the power come from for the lights? How did they continue to have water that was drinkable? Lots of canned food, but they were afraid to go in the house - so how did that happen? There were obviously other people still alive. No attempts to collaborate locally? When he tried to reach others by short-wave, he couldn't find anyone? Anywhere? Maybe I am overthinking. I did think this was a well-directed film. The acting was good. It kept my interest and the pace was good. I would recommend it.

Warning: Spoilers
The story of Chris is a story of a family - mother and siblings - pulled apart, but cemented together by the legacy of their husband and father and his family before him. Chris just happens to be autistic, and sees things in a pure, refreshing way. Their father, who had a multitude of issues (some inherited from his father) lasted as long as he could. I got the feeling that his death was a gift to his family, so they could move forward with each other. I appreciated the use of the home movies, showing the history of how people come to be who they are. Then the best part - Chris emerges as an artist - a brilliant artist. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and if I had enough money, would gladly welcome one of Chris' pieces to my home.

Forgot how much I liked this movie
10 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Spoiler Alert... I saw this movie years ago. Loved it enough to get the DVD. Hadn't watched it in several years. Got it out last night - and I had forgotten how much I enjoyed this movie. I am a sucker for "impossible" love stories - most of which don't end happily (The Remains of the Day, Brief Encounter, etc.) - so finally one that does! This film could have degenerated into something really awful, but Clint Eastwood as director kept it true and on course. With the exception of a couple corny "hip" terms used, like how Holden "dug" things about his ex (true to the era, but they age badly) - this is a well-made movie about how two wildly different people (age not withstanding)can find things in common emotionally. I love William Holden - he is a real actor, subtle but clear in how he creates this character. While I found Kay Lenz a little over the top sometimes, she evolved into the right foil for Holden.I know some are made uncomfortable by the love scenes, but Eastwood gave just enough for us to know what was happening without being graphic. Not sure some of the nudity from Lenz was necessary, but I can see how it showed us her free spirit and willingness to be open even when it might not be in her best interest (like Bruno, the guy who took her in but couldn't even remember her name the next morning...). I am glad this movie has received more accolades since it was first released. I recommend it for anyone who needs something a little bit more healthy and positive in a world of "Fifty Shades".
