The Predator isn’t the only 2018 blockbuster that has established a presence at London’s ongoing Brand Licensing Expo; Universal has also erected a suitably epic banner image for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Juan Antonio Bayona’s monstrous sequel that’s all set to become the dark and scary second chapter in Universal’s rebooted trilogy.
Pegged for a primetime June 2018 release, Fallen Kingdom has some mighty big boots to fill if it’s to emulate the success of its predecessor. Colin Trevorrow’s Jurrasic World revival was always tipped for box office stardom, but few would have predicted the film’s final tally to soar past $1.6 billion worldwide. Such an eye-watering total puts the Jurassic World franchise right up there with the highest-grossing films of all time – only Avatar, Titanic, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens have grossed more. So no pressure, right?

There are all kinds of traditions connected to Christmas. One tradition in our house is the Doctor Who Christmas Special playing here on BBC America. If you don’t know, Doctor Who is the looooong running BBC series about an alien time traveler and his (usually) human companion(s) who all travel through time and space having adventures. The Doctor regenerates into a new body – and a new actor – when his current body is at its end. If you don’t know the series and/or don’t care, you can probably skip this column.
There was a sort of Christmas Special as far back as the first incarnation over a half-century ago, but mostly it’s only been over the last ten years. The latest one will be tonight (if you’re reading this on Sunday). The first in this series began after the show returned from a sixteen-year...

A version of this story on “Downton Abbey” first appeared in the print edition of TheWrap Magazine’s The Race Begins Emmy Issue. It lasted for six seasons and spanned almost 20 years, from the sinking of the Titanic to the first murmurs of a new menace rising in Germany. It garnered 58 Emmy nominations in its first five seasons, winning 12 times and setting a record as the most-honored foreign show ever. It gave Maggie Smith dozens of quotable lines, made stars out of little-known British actors and gave its creator, writer Julian Fellowes, a calling card even more impressive...

It's not just Rory. These 42 Doctor Who characters have all, in their own way, died and been resurrected...
Spoilers! Lot of them, for Doctor Who of old and new lie ahead. Including the (publicised) return of a face or two to Doctor Who series 9.
Cheating death is a fundamental part of the make-up of Doctor Who. It's lasted for 52 years so far, whether on television or in spin-off media, and that's in no small part because of the original idea to recast the title character in 1966, thus creating the concept of regeneration.
But resurrection has also affected the characters around the Doctor and with a new series about to start, that looks to be as prominent as ever. Heck, series 9 even has a two-parter called The Girl Who Died and The Woman Who Lived. Plus, we already know that apparently dead characters such as Missy, Osgood and River Song will...

Fox’s Wayward Pines stars Matt Dillon as rugged secret service agent Ethan Burke. Investigating the disappearance of two fellow agents, Burke finds himself marooned in a middle-of-nowhere town after a car wreck kills his partner and leaves him dashingly banged up. Early comparisons to Lost and Twin Peaks don’t look far off the mark, with promotional material mostly focused on cultivating the mystery of the titular backwoods Idaho town and its population of grinning suburban drones.
M. Night Shyamalan has been given the helm, which seems kind of like handing the guy who sank the Titanic the keys to the Lusitania and saying “go nuts.” But hey, Fox probably knows what it’s doing. Stuck in grim Idaho purgatory alongside Dillon’s Burke are Carla Gugino as his old flame and Piney convert Kate Hewson and Terrence Howard as a thick slice of ham who really loves rum raisin ice cream.

warning: spoilers!
I’m about to say the saddest thing I can imagine saying about Doctor Who: I just don’t think I care anymore.
I have never felt like this before. Of course a show that has run for this long will have its ups and downs. But now that every episode is apparently meant to be epic and every season has a big arc, it’s tough to say, after a crappy episode, “Well, next week’s will be better.” This is no longer a guarantee. Next week’s episode might be completely awesome. But I don’t hold out a lot of hope for that.
Sure, this episode was better than last week’s abomination, but not by a lot. We’ve had the Titanic in space, so now we get the Orient Express in space… inhabited by another gimmicky monster. The Weeping Angels, say, might be gimmicky,...

Paris - Coming up with a new twist for a horror film without going down some very disgusting roads hasn't been that easy in the 21st Century. It's one reason franchises like "Saw," "Paranormal Activity" and "The Purge" have hit such a cord with viewers and spawned a ton of sequels. One film that's trying to add a new twist to the supernatural thriller (with more than a touch of horror thrown in) is the Dowdle brothers' "As Above/So Below" which arrives in theaters on Friday. Originally, Relativity CEO Ryan Kavanaugh had an idea about staging a film in the catacombs of Paris, a labyrinth of tunnels and quarries beneath the streets of the city that stretch over 200 miles. Shockingly, very few films had used the centuries old underground spaces as the setting for a movie. Considering approximately 6 million human remains were buried (or re-buried) there it seemed like...

As hulking and lavish as the Titanic, "Downton Abbey" appears unsinkable -- especially when it comes to Emmy voters and fans. But the series, whose first episode began with news of that famous ship's North Atlantic disaster, is not immune to rough seas. Does the disappointing fourth season of "Downton" foretell a coming crash? At the outset, creator Julian Fellowes' progressive twist on "Upstairs, Downstairs" fleetly commanded a sprawling cast of masters and servants through the domestic melodramas of pre-World War I Britain. Though never as diamond-sharp as Fellowes' own "Gosford Park" (2001), directed to perfection by Robert Altman, "Downton" enjoyed the same lively energy. The title sequence, a fluid montage of sunny grounds and open shutters, gas lamps and chandeliers, distilled the series to its bright essence: "Downton" suffused even its bitterest developments (drowned heirs, miscarriages, dead Turkish paramours)...

A new feature film for Dad's Army starring Toby Jones and Bill Nighy has been announced.
Jones will play Captain George Mainwaring - a role which belonged to Arthur Lowe in the original BBC comedy - while Nighy will take on Sergeant Arthur Wilson, made famous by John Le Mesurier.
The film will be produced by original Dad's Army writer Jimmy Perry and BAFTA-winning Damian Jones, reports The Daily Telegraph.
Damian, who has worked on Adulthood and The Iron Lady, praised the "universal appeal" of the franchise.
The plot will remain faithful to the show, with Captain Mainwaring commanding a makeshift troop of soldiers and defending his hometown against the invading German army.
80 episodes of the comedy were aired between 1968 to 1977, while a feature film also launched in 1971.
Toby Jones has featured in the Hunger Games series as Claudius Templesmith, as well as ITV's Titanic miniseries and 2006 film Infamous.

If they gave Emmys for Outstanding Acting In a Vintage Roman Bath... That would be a very strange and limited Emmy category. It would also be a category that Linus Roache would win with ease this year. Roache has been a new addition in the second season of History's "Vikings," playing King Ecbert, a real history figure brought into the "Vikings" world as this year's Big Bad to oppose Travis Fimmel's Ragnar. Or at least that's the way it looked at first, but soon King Ecbert and Ragnar were making tentative treaties and Ecbert was showing great interest in the Viking religion. So who can say how things stand between King Ecbert and Ragnar at this point? One thing we know with certainty, though, is that King Ecbert loves a good soak. He meets with political allies in the bath. He meets with religion advisors in the bath. And...

With a reported budget somewhere in the neighborhood of $80 to $100 million dollars, there is no doubt where the money went in "Pompeii," with the ancient Italian city laid to no uncertain waste in Paul W.S. Anderson's film. When you plunk down your $12, you will get the destruction you were promised. But it's too bad it's such a repetitive, unengaging, glaringly digital experience and worse than that, you'll have to sit through the disaster that is the rest of movie, a turgid gladiator drama, with acting so wooden, we'd wager that the script co-credited to "Downton Abbey" scribe Julian Fellowes (who we can only imagine saw his draft thoroughly rewritten by the other three writers on this into something more pedestrian) is good for kindling. Lots of things burn in "Pompeii," but nothing resembling drama, tension, excitement or entertainment. Attempting to forge the doomed romance of "Titanic" with the buff...

Last winter, our hearts wept as Lord Grantham's sweetly rebellious youngest daughter, Lady Sybil Branson, died in childbirth. Her passing left behind a grieving husband, a motherless baby girl and a giant void in Downton Abbey's tiny (read: nonexistent) community of burgeoning feminists. In her two-and-a-half seasons on Downton, Sybil made plenty of waves with her traditionalist family. She was the first female Crawley to – gasp! – don pants at dinner. She trained as a nurse during World War I. But most shockingly, she poured a giant vat of warm...

You probably already know how this story ends. At least, if you were paying attention in history class. But as with any disaster movie, especially one based on historical events like "Pompeii," knowing how things end doesn't make watching how they get there any less exciting. Especially not with Paul W.S. Anderson directing (in 3D no less).

For Julian Fellowes, straying so far from the plot of animated hit Gnomeo & Juliet could only end in tragedy, as this trailer shows
Julian Fellowes might be responsible for Downton Abbey, the Titanic mini-series and that film where Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie mumbled interminably at each other in Venice, but now he faces his sternest task yet: adapting a classic work of literature.
Yes, there's going to be a new Romeo and Juliet film. This one has been written for the screen by Fellowes, directed by Carlo Carlei and stars Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld as the titular star-crossed lovers. At first glance, the story seems to be a straight live-action update of 2011's Gnomeo & Juliet, where two young people fall in love against the wishes of their warring families; then there's a needlessly long Rocket Man medley, a ceramic frog falls over and everyone lives happily ever after.

Sam Mendes’ psychosexual horror series for Showtime, Penny Dreadful, will be among the first U.S. TV dramas to benefit from the UK’s newly-approved TV tax relief for high-end productions. Legislation for a 25% tax credit for TV series costing at least £1M per hour to produce — plus animated programs and video games — has been given the state-aid greenlight by Brussels, clearing the last major hurdle before coming into effect April 1. Largely based on Britain’s Film Tax Relief scheme, which has provided about £800M in rebates to more than 800 movies since 2007, the new law requires productions meet a British cultural test. Co-productions made under an internationally recognized treaty may also be eligible, and it’s believed the new regs could inject about $570M into the local industry. But there are concerns that the potential £200M in relief available by 2018 could be gobbled up by U.S. productions that employ British talent on UK shores.

The thing about comfort food is that when someone serves you a piping hot plate of it week after week, you never suspect that one day they're going to grab it and smash it into your face.
Downton Abbey is just a soap opera, as both its admirers and detractors will tell you; what side of that divide they come down on depends on both how they feel about the genre itself and this show's impeccable version thereof. In the genteel world of Downton Abbey, calamity strikes swiftly bringing uncertainty to the lives of the Granthams, the Crawleys and their devoted staff. Having survived the loss of the estate’s heir in the sinking of the Titanic in the first season, followed by the upheaval in their lives due to World War I in the second season, the third season brings about a different kind of challenges to the great house and its stately occupants: a financial scandal rocks the house of Grantham and threatens to impoverish them all forcing them to abandon the only home they have ever known. So just as Mary Grantham (Michelle Dockery) and Matthew Crowley (Dan Stevens) are about to finally wed, this latest wrinkle in their path to marital bliss may prevent their blessed union.

Updated: I talk to Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes, Gareth Neame and nine cast members (including Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Thomas, Rob James-Collier, and many more) about Season 3 of Downton, which returns to PBS and Masterpiece on Sunday, January 6. Over at The Daily Beast, you can read the updated feature, "Downton Abbey Season 3: Julian Fellowes, Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, and More," in which we talk broadly about Season 3 and break down some of the specific arcs from the third season, character by character. (Minor spoilers.) Downton Abbey viewers are anxiously awaiting Season 3 of the addictive British costume drama—which arrives on Jan. 6 in the U.S., when it returns to PBS’s Masterpiece—searching for televised methadone to tide them over until Downton Abbey’s third season kicks off. One problem: there isn’t really another show like Downton Abbey on television. Between the exquisite costumes and lavish sets...

Get ready to catch up with Downton Abbey. If you missed any of the previous two, well loved, seasons of the show, you can make yourself a cup of hot cocoa and press play on today’s short video. It will get you completely up to speed and in about five minutes, I might add.
Of course, if you prefer, you can find the first two seasons on DVD. I highly recommend them. I recently did a re-watch and it was loads of fun. Wondering what all of the fuss is about?
Well, in the United Kingdom, fans are already enjoying Downton Abbey, series three, but we Yanks have to wait until the third thrilling season debuts in January. Ratings are soaring. One especially dramatic season three episode saw 9.5 million viewers. Today’s video offers you a chance to get spun up before series three begins.

Even by the standards of a show whose central character travels through time and space in a craft disguised as a ‘50s era British police phone box, 2012 has been an interesting year for Doctor Who, the BBC sci-fi series that stars Matt Smith.

Kit Harington, also known as Jon Snow in HBO’s hit fantasy drama Game of Thrones, is in talks to star in Resident Evil director Paul W.S. Anderson‘s Pompeii.
Period disaster movie Pompeii will be reportedly based on the world’s most famous volcanic eruption that buried the ancient city in 79 A.D. during the Roman Empire.
The film centers on Milo (Harington), the slave of a shipping tycoon who plans to buy his freedom and marry his master’s daughter. However, she’s already been promised to a corrupt Roman senator, while he’s been sold to another owner in Naples. Just when things can’t get any worse, Mount Vesuvius erupts, prompting Milo to flee back to Pompeii to rescue his love and his best friend, a gladiator trapped in the city’s coliseum.

How would you compare Amy and Rory's Doctor Who exits to the series ten most depressing companion departures? I may have had problems with how the Weeping Angels were used, but the show definitely delivered the melodrama. Usually you have to kill a dog to get me to react like that. (Why, hello Futurama, hello Revenge.)
NBC is looking to adapt About a Boy into a TV series.
I have to admit, when I heard that Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes was working on a Titanic mini-series, I was hoping he's make it a Downton prequel by making James Crawley one of the characters. Instead, Fellowes says he's writing a prequel novel about the courtship between Robert and Cora.
Character actor Mark Margolis, best known for ringing Tio Salamanca's bell on Breaking Bad has taken a recurring role on American Horror Story.

Another pivotal role for the adaptation of Cassandra Clare’s novel City of Bones, the first book in her Mortal Instruments series, has been filled. I did see the recent Titanic miniseries Zegers was in on ABC but I was so bored to death (disappointing because I had hopes due to Julian Fellowes’ involvement, the creator of the best show television – at least the first season – Downton Abbey) that I blanked out early.

I’m not so much a Doctor Who enthusiast but I have to admit I am often a fan of the companions that the show introduces or offers more continuous exposure to U.S. audiences. Jenna-Louise Coleman, the current heir apparent as Matt Smith’s Doctor Who Series 7 companion, had a bit role in Marvel’s Captain America: First Avenger film (she was also in the latest Titanic project but I tapped early on that, though I was excited for it due to the Downton Abbey writer involved), but I’m otherwise not familiar with her. BBC has released two more images of Coleman with the good Doctor, to go along with the previous mischievious tease that was released earlier this month.

Following the recent on-set snaps of Doctor Who’s new companion, the first official shot of Jenna-Louise Coleman in her new role has been released.
The former Emmerdale and Titanic actress joined the cast of the sci-fi show a couple of months back, and in May began filming alongside her Doctor, Matt Smith, on episodes to be broadcast in Spring 2013. Yet there is still a certain amount of mystery surrounding her character.
Steven Moffat is yet to confirm the name of the Doctor’s new companion, although it is thought to be Clara after the name was overheard during filming, but it looks like we are finally getting to the juicy stuff and hopefully more information about Clara and the upcoming series will soon follow.

There was really just one, green, giant-sized box office story this weekend. Assembling Earth’s Mightiest Heroes proved to be the jackpot as The Avengers were on a record pace, after blitzing through with $80.5 million Friday, filling the multiplexes this weekend and kicking off the summer film season. It didn’t matter if it was IMAX, 3D or 2D, the cash never stopped flowing through a whopping 4,349 theaters. The early estimate is $200.3 million (nearly making up all of it’s $220 million production budget on domestic box office) and worldwide the count is up to $641 million, placing it 55th on the all-time worldwide list. That works out to an unimaginable $46,057 per theater! The next largest opening was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 with $169 million. Not bad for an opening weekend – and people still wonder why so much is invested in big blockbusters and their sequels. When it works folks,...
