I've seen worse
Johnny_Hing13 July 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this while having a bad day and still found it mildly entertaining, and that's saying something, as I'm not easily-pleased with B-grade movies. Low-budget, sure. Predictable plot, yeah. But the acting was decent. Nice to see Greg Evigan as the sheriff (I remembered him from B.J. and the Bear some 30 years ago, and hardly recognized him.) Sage Mears as the female lead was rather easy on the eyes, and believable. Her character didn't suddenly become the fastest gun alive after taking shooting lessons, which would seem to be the norm for this type of Western revenge genre. She learned how to hold a gun and pull the trigger, but not a whole lot more. There were a few anachronistic-type flaws, as has been pointed out, but they were easily overlooked. I'm not going to recommend that you make a special trip to the video store. But if you're in the mood for a Western, I've seen much worse. (Try sitting through a Dwight Yoakum Western and see what I mean.)

goofs and poor props
rhpepsi8 June 2010
you will love this movie IF and only IF you like bad acting and a movie set that was put up in the back of a home depot store.. all of the lumber was modern ..the best scene was the one in jail cell when you can see all the wafer-wood painted green.. all of the door knobs are bright brass..

and i loved the double acting hinges on the bars swinging doors the electric porch lights on all of the buildings.. the only reason i finished watching the movie, was to finish out my worst ten movies list.

What about these...?? WASHINGTON QUARTERS (minted in 1932) and ROOSEVELT DIMES (1946)...add to that the brand new JUMBO INDEX playing cards in the poker game.

B-Western
mani-nanna-650-15734812 September 2010
Soo... What we have here. Typical low budget movie with typical western theme of revenge.

Action: You get your share of shootout, no worries about that. Though pace of the movie is slow.

Plot: 2 dimensional. Stereotypical. Nothing original.

Acting: Almost non-presented.

What we learn from the movie: 1) Sage Mears is beautiful. VERY beautiful. 2) She will never get an Oscar. NEVER. 3) To look as cool western hero, you must try to be as emotionless as possible and talk as little as possible, and never mind if time to time you look dumb because of that, instead of looking cool.

If you decide to watch this movie:

1) Ignore the plot holes. 2) Ignore all the pointless characters. 3) Lower your expectations to not be disappointed.

We killed every last one of them.
Sage Mears is a very attractive actress. One would think she might get better roles. She is really the only one worth mention in this straight- to-video western. With the exception of 3:10 to Yuma, I didn't even know anyone way still making westerns, but here we are.

There isn't a lot of great acting here, but how many westerns feature acting giants. It's the action you come for. There isn't a whole lot of that, either.

It's a revenge movie. The bad guy (Geoff Meed) kills her husband (Brian Wimmer) and two sons and his gang rapes her. She becomes the town drunk until the bounty hunter (Barry Van Dyke) arrives in town.

What happens next is not entirely believable, but it makes for a fairly good story. I can't say as much for the very end. That goes off into fantasy land.

Worst western ever made
capflight2 June 2010
This could have been a great movie. Great plot. Woman raped and left for dead after family is murdered by gang of outlaws. She learns to shoot and seeks revenge. The girl is pretty enough. The guy looks like a cowboy but talks like a foreigner trying to talk like a cowboy. Problems start when the camera starts rolling. Poor acting, dialog, directing, score, camera angles, etc. (fill in the blanks here). How bad can a movie get? They seem to find new ways to produce poor films. Save your time and effort by renting something else. Anything else. I kept watching because I wanted to see how much worse it could get. Cant anyone make a real western anymore? Calling Clint Eastwood!

Should of passed on it, when the title looked like a video game title
KineticSeoul12 April 2010
Don't trust any of the reviews giving only the positive thing about this crappy western, they are probably the ones that made this atrocious film. This is the most cliché and generic a western can get, and just about everything in it seems to be forced. It has bad acting, bad cinematography, bad plot, bad dialogue, it's boring as hell, it's a crappy western. I got so bored watching this, I started surfing the web and watching this back and forth at the same time and didn't miss a thing. It's funny how in the back of the DVD some phony reviewer compared this to other actually good western movies, probably got payed off for it as well. Just skip this, the only thing I found a little original is how the wife tries to get revenge for her families murder and not the husband. Just pass on this one. It's like some 6 yr old that likes western movies directed it.

Overwrought but watchable
dr-jr-ross6 August 2013
A through and through western revenge drama. Being filmed in 2010 do we expect more than we do from a classic like Hang 'Em High? Yes we do, and the film is lacking Clint Eastwood. Nonetheless taken at face value it's an hour and 30 minutes of overwrought entertainment.

The woman protagonist who's family has been murdered, of course learns gun craft in less than the time it takes to bake a cake.

Nice 20th century coins in the poker scene, BTW. The sheriff is a decent actor and gives the movie a bit of character, the bounty hunter is a stern father figure but is reaching. Almost all else is stilted and seems forced to a greater or lesser extent. Anyway, "bottles don't shoot back"..

WORST movie ever known
paul-blackburn21 August 2010
If i could rate this less than 1 I would. This is the WORST movie ever made. The actors are not fit for a cheap Canadian 3:00 am WE BUY GOLD commercial. The main character (wannabe Marlboro man) and the beautiful, sexy, but shockingly talentless female costar prove that there was no effort put forward whatsoever from the casting agents. The accents were more 2010 Kardashian family than 19th century wild west. THe best actor was the Lee Horn character and the Mexican guy with the cigar which was disturbingly amusing. The plot less storyline, this movie is a total disaster. I want my 95 minutes back. Story: Weak Plot: Nonexistent Authenticity: None Acting: Horrendous Action: Cheap

Worst than bad
aminjacoub14 August 2010
I love western movies, mostly I enjoy myself in classics, but also I am so happy when some new release happened. Even so, there are only few quality titles in modern era, and this one is so awful that I could not see it in whole.

I can't explain the plot and all the references that are connected with directing, production, acting etc., but in general as the movie in its core, all of his aspects is worse than any kind of cinematographic project lately, and as a movie itself.

So, even if you are bored and wish to watch anything on your screen try to avoid this one. Either catch you favorite classic or any modern Western you like, or just sit on the porch with a beer and enjoy in yourself. It is better than watching this garbage that will only put you in upset state.

Surprisingly decent genre offering from The Asylum
mikemdp19 February 2012
Not sure what makes this Western genre offering from The Asylum so surprisingly decent. My guess is pure mathematics. When it doesn't have to spend money on special effects from bargain-basement CGI house Tiny Juggernaut, The Asylum can devote those same dollars to scriptwriting, direction and location scenery.

This is essentially a mockbuster of the new "True Grit," with Barry Van Dyke unconvincing in the Jeff Bridges role and cutie pie nobody Sage Mears in the Hailee Steinfeld part, rewritten here as an alcoholic milf who hires Van Dyke to help her seek revenge against the bad guys who raped her and murdered her husband and children.

It's not his fault, but Barry looks so much like his father Dick, it's hard to take him seriously as a rough bounty hunter. You half expect him to burst into "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" in every scene.

And because he must have some sort of contract that says he appears in every third Asylum movie, Greg Evigan shows up as an old, fat, useless sheriff who only serves to remind us baby boomers how old, fat and useless we've gotten since "My Two Dads" too.

It's true the weaponry here is anachronistic and the money shown in the poker game scene is too modern. And yeah, pretty much every cowboy in this movie rides his horse like it's the first time he's ever been on one. But really, even the most authentic of Westerns have always been revisionist fantasies. The Asylum isn't asking too much when requiring we take this one with an extra grain of salt.

Why? Because ultimately, it works. For some reason, "6 Guns" works as a whole to create a harmless cowboy flick that's better than you would expect from the king of direct-to-DVD cheese. After all, this is the company that gave us "Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus," so I think we need to count the few blessings The Asylum throws us.

the worst western ever made...
amyvsings14 May 2010
The acting in this was painfully bad. Whoever was in charge of hair and makeup did absolutely no research on the time period obviously since the leading lady has a haircut current in 2009. The accents were horrible. The plot could have been strong but the acting was so horrible that is was more comical than serious. I was suckered into watching this movie by my boyfriend who loves westerns and he agrees that it is the worst western ever... The lines sounded like they were being read from the script. The most hilarious part was when the bad guy pulled four pennies out of his pocket and threw them on the bar and said, "there's more where that came from". I don't know anything about The Asylum but if this is really the best movie they have made then they are in trouble. Don't quit your day job!

Westerns are slowly returning; Solid product
Rusty-385-3530431 May 2012
I usually avoid reading reviews, especially when the reviewers mark a film as dreadful. So I had to step in and give the film a chance to be considered. Overall, the film captured much of the "look" of a frontier town. Yes, low budgets have less finesse than some, but they carried it off well. Money isn't everything. The mood of the film was expressed well. Costumes and sets were fine. Most viewers don't notice details anyway. Acting and casting was right for the mood the writer was trying to portray. I like the fact that a wife wanting revenge takes action, uses her resources, and doesn't completely give up. Some role reversals were a nice touch, and I enjoyed the soundtrack. Reviewers don't need to beat a film senseless to make their points. Even John Wayne made a few early b&w films that hold merit today. Westerns will survive.

Brutal, grim, realistic revenge Western with a notable score
Wuchakk20 January 2013
RELEASED TO VIDEO IN 2010 directed by Shane Van Dyke (Dick's grandson), "6 Guns" stars Barry Van Dyke (Dick's son) in a Shane-like role. The plot is pretty typical for Westerns: A band of outlaws murder & rape a family, but the wife (Sage Mears) survives and, after overcoming her disillusionment, wants justice. She eventually enlists the services of a taciturn bounty hunter (Barry Van Dyke) to teach her how to shoot. Meanwhile the outlaws are on the prowl.

"6 Guns" is a quasi-remake of Raquel Welch's "Hannie Caulder" from almost forty years prior, but lacks that one's comical edge. There are some obvious elements of other Westerns, like "The Bravados" (1958) and "Pale Rider" (1985), but what else is new?

Barry is notable as the laconic bounty hunter as he fits the role of the rugged loner to a 'T.' He's akin to Eastwood in the Leone trilogy, but is an actual human character rather than caricature. Geoff Meed chews up the scenery as the main villain with gusto; it's obvious why his men fear him. Mears is quite good as the female protagonist, convincing and winning the viewer's sympathy, while Erin Marie Hogan stands out as the ravishing brunette saloon babe, Scarlet.

The vibe is nicely realistic and the locations smack of harsh Western authenticity. All of this is topped off by a great score by Chris Ridenhour, which definitely perks the movie up and gives it class. In fact, the movie's worth watching just for the score.

I'm only giving "6 Guns" 6.5/10 Stars because, even though it's a solid Western, it's also low-budget and kind of standard. If I gave it a higher grade people might expect something better than what it is. Still, if you like an occasional Western this one's worthwhile.

I was surprised to discover that this was made by The Asylum, a film company notorious for releasing cheap knockoffs of major releases to steal some of their thunder. The Asylum has certainly put out some cartoony dreck (e.g. "30,000 Leagues Under the Sea" and "Mega Piranha"), but they can also surprise you with some worthy low-budget stuff (e.g. "The Land That Time Forgot" and "Grimm's Snow White"). "6 Guns" ranks with the latter.

THE MOVIE RUNS 95 minutes was shot in California (Spahn Ranch, Chatsworth; Paramount Ranch, Agoura; and Snegoff Ranch, Topenga Canyon). It's rated 'R' for the brutal murder/rape scene.

GRADE: B- (6.5/10)

Awful film
flateric248 April 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Can't say anything positive about this movie. The acting is wooden and strained, plot is thin and to have the 'hero' get less baddies than the woman is odd too.

There is a part of the story where one of the baddies is across the street in a deserted town virtually and is show with a rifle. Now, that would make a very distinctive sound in a dead town but not one of the baddies even notices and goes to investigate. A bit of reality would be nice to give this film any credibility and without any decent storyline and poor 'cry-acting' from the leading woman which at one point, wasn't sure if she was going to laugh or cry when 'hero' shoved her against a wall! It is amazing how the stereotypical gunslinger with little personality though, appears to be mortally wounded near the end only to have an arm injury!!!

Avoid this C Movie that makes Django look good!

Awesome!
vinsonadvertising13 September 2012
I watch a lot of movies and have probably seen all modern westerns. I have also been a homeless young person and was raised on the streets so I know what is going on out there. I really bought into this one. The characters were believable. Sure, they don't show the whole mourning process of the woman who lost her family. No movie does. I wouldn't change a word of this movie and I would recommend it to any western buff. Especially if you look for "real" in a movie. The actors were brilliantly cast. The bad guys really fit the part, with different levels of sensitivity and hardness. The director has a great vision. I'd like to see other things this writer director and actors have done. Western lovers, watch this movie.

So Bad it hurt
usmcjam11 February 2011
The acting was worst than a middle school Drama Club. Sock puppets show more emotion than anyone in the cast. The town and props were abysmal. In the days before Cowboy Action Shooting you could have gotten away with this due to cost, but when there is a cottage industry dedicated to making quality western wear at affordable prices, the only plus was nobody was wearing Levi's and Lace-up Justin Ropers. Nothing about this movie was worth watching it for free. I should have spent the time poking a mean dog with a sharp stick.

P.S. Sage Mears should look into porn, but I don't think she has the acting chops.

Bad Movie
info-1883218 September 2010
Warning: Spoilers
There's enough bad commentary here already with which I fully agree so I'll not add more. The criticism is all valid and accurate. I'll just add the note that in the first 5 minutes the wife and husband are in bed for the night (nothing inappropriate... just casual)... but there is a small box like shape showing through the back of her night gown. The box is about 3-4 inches square and perhaps an inch or two thick and it's mounted on the back of her waist under her night gown. She then lays down to sleep for the night. This is obviously ridiculous and is probably a radio microphone transmitter. I mean, its not a fanny pack or a first aid kit. Mostly, ITS NOT INVISIBLE EITHER. Don't these things belong in a film school classroom where they learn not to do this kind of thing rather than available on the open market?

Extremely poor writing and it went downhill from there!
kevinwords24 February 2011
I should have given up on this low-budget Western set in the 1800s when, just over two minutes into it, the main female character, Selina Stevens, portrayed by Sage Mears, read the line (yes, read, like most of her lines), "I can't lift the Crock-Pot all by myself." Surely, the writer (I use the word loosely), Geoff Meed, isn't so ignorant as to not have a clue that the trade name "Crock-Pot" and the electrical appliance it refers to weren't invented until the early 1970s. Then again, his forte is martial arts and stunts, so maybe he has been knocked in the head once too often. If he didn't know, then surely someone else in the cast or crew, perhaps the honeywagon driver, should have. That's where the script belonged—in the honeywagon.

Then, about four-and-a-half minutes in, actor Brian Wimmer as the character Will Stevens, said, "I gotta replace all the shuttlers and windows due to the winds that are coming in." No, that's not a typo, that's exactly what he said—shuttlers. Hey, maybe he just flubbed the line and the low budget couldn't stand the strain of re-shooting the scene. On the other hand, maybe Geoff Meed really should give up the stunts and fighting. Permanent brain damage is no laughing matter.

Perhaps The Asylum, known for producing "mockbusters," used these lines as a joke, but they weren't nearly as funny as this joke of a movie.

Hard to fathom, but yes, I kept watching to the end, mostly out of fascination with how terrible it was…just as one refrains from turning away from a train wreck. But life is too short to have spent the time watching or to further comment on this train wreck. I hope I've saved someone else the waste of time.

Frank! Frank! Frank! Frank!
axrocks200910 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
6 Guns was the most disappointing thing since my son. I mean, how much more could you possibly screw a simple western movie? And while my son eventually hanged himself in the bathroom of the gas station, the unfortunate reality of 6 Guns is that it will be around. Forever. It will never go away. It can never be undone. I don't think i will be able to get back the 1 hour and 35 minutes I wasted watching this train wreak. If you want to watch a movie with horrible acting, story, characters, dialogue (crockpot in the 1800s? LOL), sets. Well this is a movie for you. It's like the director was like "It's stylistically designed to be that way and you can't undo that. But we can diminish the effects of it."

what was the "acting"?
scarab03310 January 2018
Typical western script, sure. I liked the plot, the predictability, and did I mention, a western? I did have trouble getting past the horrible acting by Sage Mears. In fact, I only logged in to review because I needed to tell someone how horrible the acting was.

But I made it to the end, had a few chuckles at the "acting", and enjoyed the plot. Its a western, and the limited budget wasn't what almost made this a comedy. Just the scene where she was out of bullets trying to shoot Lee Horn was hysterical. Couldn't do a second take? Oh well, killed a lunch hour

It was alright
xGUNSLINGERx13 June 2010
My personal opinion of this movie is that it was pretty cheesy, but just because it's not "Hollywood" doesn't make it a bad movie. It had a limited budget, and it's a straight-to-DVD release. The story is typical, sure. The acting is kind of rough. My problem with all the naysayers is that most old western movies weren't a whole lot better. 6 Guns is no 3:10 to Yuma, but like I said... limited budget and resources. The lead parts were likable, but human. The bad guys are mean and terrible, but they are still human. If you rent this movie, don't expect an epic western, just expect a decent way to burn a couple hours. The key to enjoying this movie is to not take it in the same way you would take in a Hollywood blockbuster with a $27 million budget.

Had to stop watching, just too bad to waste any more time.
talljoe10 February 2019
As a firearms instructor and long time shooting enthusiast I just couldn't watch the appalling and dangerous gun handling any longer.

The 'expert' Frank teaching the woman to shoot was blind leading the blind. So many things wrong. No wonder she took an age to shoot a bottle off a tree stump.

The guns of the era would likely be 40 caliber or more. Loud with some fair recoil. Not pop pop pop guns with no recoil.

Just an awful movie. Wooden acting, stupid dialogue. I am sure every scene of the town main street had the same couple stepping off the boardwalk each time.

It's now on Netflix. Don't waste your time. You have been warned.

Excellent!
johnwerneken24 August 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I liked the movie. Very graphic and yet credible bad guys, who are very bad indeed. Very decent good guy. Extremely motivated female lead. Happy ending (which seemed impossible earlier in the film). The portrayal of the general public's reaction to the bad guys (lie, try to get on their "good side" which they utterly lack; pray for help from "the government"; hide under the bed) EXACTLY fits almost all people as I know them.

My own experiences with somewhat similar situations - confronting deadly peril- are more like the female lead's as to skills but I have repeatedly acted as the heroes did and, like them, am still around whereas some of the real-life characters I had to deal with are not.

NOT for children or even teenagers IMHO!

Great! If you like Westerns with the "Revenge" theme.
emangroove2 July 2015
This is a movie that could have garnered more accolades and bite - if there was time for the actors to do "multiple takes" of some scenes. The lead actor (Barry Van Dyke) was good but could have emoted a lot more intensity in some of his scenes with the lead actress. Barry was the perfect point man to make this movie "Better" than what was wrapped up. Greg Evigan could have turned up the juice too as he played a support to Barry's character. And the lead actress should have done some of her scenes with a lot more bite, fierceness and overall " I'm seeking REVENGE" quality to make her more believable than vulnerable. Typical story-line and plot-twist make it predictable and kind of fun to watch.

Woefully weak western
Wizard-818 August 2018
Normally I love westerns, so when I came across this particular offering of the genre on Netflix, I was eager to watch it. However, in the first few seconds of the movie, it was revealed that this particular western was made by the B movie studio The Asylum, who are notorious for making really cheap and really stupid movies. But I decided to stick it out, though to be quite honest, I wish I hadn't. I will admit the production values are a notch better than most other Asylum movies, and the movie is a bit less stupid. But what a long and painful slog the movie is all the same. The problem isn't that the core store is overly familiar - any plot can be made to be engaging with the right treatment - but that its execution is painful. The movie is unbelievably slow, with a great amount of padding, and scenes go by at a snail's pace. The characters are either cliched or poorly developed. (The bad guys only have two scenes in the first half of the movie!) And there is not only very little action, what action there is happens to be really sluggish and not the least bit exciting. A better western with the same basic premise is the 1971 movie "Hannie Caulder" - watch that instead.
