Samantha Weinstein, a Canadian actor who appeared in the 2013 remake of Stephen King’s Carrie starring Chloë Grace Moretz, died May 14 at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto after being diagnosed in 2021 with a rare form of ovarian cancer. She was 28.
Her death was announced on her Instagram page by her family. “After two and a half years of cancer treatment, and a lifetime of jet setting around the world, voicing a plethora of cartoon animals, making music, and knowing more about life than most people ever will, she is off on her next adventure,” her family wrote.
Launching her show business career as a child actor in 2003 with a role on an episode of the Canadian TV series The Red Green Show, Weinstein would go on to appear in such series as The Winning Season (2004), Wild Card (2005), The Border (2008), Less Than Kind and Burden of Truth (2020), among others. It feels just like last month we were complimenting Hulu on its true crime offerings. Well, with its list of new releases for February 2023, Hulu is staying in the true crime lane. Suppose that’ll happen when you push back the release date of a series or two.
February sees the arrival of three notable true crime series on Hulu. Taiwan Crime Stories premieres on Feb. 1 and presents four true tales from Taiwan’s criminal “dark underbelly.” That will be followed by ABC News Studios’ Killing County on Feb. 3. That three-episode series ponders the question “what happens when police kill?” The most interesting true crime offering premieres on Feb. 9. That’s when Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence College shares its four-episode saga of Larry Ray and the young college students he victimized.

Thursday, November 1st and Friday Nov 2nd during the 2012 American Film Market for its third year in a row, DreamAgo, in partnership with Hamilton International, the renowned Swiss watch company, will host "Hamilton Helps DreamAgo Connect". Known for its annual Plume & Pellicule screenwriting workshop held annually in Sierre, Switzerland and for the development, support and promotion of films that make a difference, the program has 3 key phases.
First phase is a speed dating-style pitch session designed to introduce selected screenwriters, who benefitted from DreamAgo's screenwriting lab in Switzerland, to well-known producers and distributors. Screenwriters in attendance will have 10 minutes with a producer to present their project before moving on to the next producer and starting again. Among the producers participating are Linda Obst (Hope Floats, Sleepless In Seattle, How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days), Golan Ramras (One Missed Call, The Incredible Hulk), Kelley Feldsott Reynolds (The Flyboys, The Unsaid, Five Fingers), Sukee Chew (Jesus Henry Christ, Fireflies In The Garden), Christina Piovesan (Red Lights, The Whistleblower, Amreeka), Paula Mazanedo-Schmit (VP Film Finances Inc.), David Miller (Amal Sidarth, My Foolish Heart) and Vanessa Adkins (Unthinkable, A Late Quartet).
Second, the program offers the opportunity for any WGA writer to propose a feature project and try to win a six weeks Residency in Sierre (Switzerland), all costs covered. Among the more than 250 pitches submitted, DreamAgo & the Residence Ruffieux will select 15 projects and each of the writers will be given the opportunity to pitch it in person for 10 minutes. The lucky winner will be revealed during a brunch at the Swiss Consulate.
Third, DreamAgo will present a panel, in partnership with The Writers Guild of America, the topic this year: How to Preserve Your Vision When Those Around You Won't Leave It Alone? (Hint: An International Production Might Be Your Solution), on Friday, November 2nd. Panelists confirmed for this event include Barry Navidi (Producer, The Merchant Of Venice, Wild Salome), Sydney Levine (Creator of Sydney's Buzz a Network Blog on Indiewire, Founder of Film Finders), Vince Fischer (International Agent, Creator of the International Eci Agency), and Neil Landau (Writer, Tad The Lost Explorer).
Writer Howard Rodman (Joe Gould'S Secret, Savage Grace) will serve as moderator.
Additionally, DreamAgo will also have a part in the celebrated Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards that pay tribute to the off-screen talents. The 6th edition will take place in Hollywood on October 28, just prior to the start of Afm. DreamAgo, in collaboration with Hamilton, has selected Zoe Kazan to receive the Best Screenwriter Award for Ruby Sparks. The award will be presented by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, the filmmaking duo behind Little Miss Sunshine.

Quirky characters aren’t enough to save an independent comedy these days, and neither is packing it full of recognizable faces. Jesus Henry Christ is guilty on both counts, but to its credit it has some brains to back it up. Unfortunately, it leans a bit too heavily on its two child co-stars Jason Spevack and Samantha Weinstein, whom when separate are rather fantastic but who just can’t create a convincing interaction when paired together. The chemistry may be off, but it’s not what prevents the film from being a great little comedy; that’s the writing’s fault. Piling such overly familiar but eclectic characters into a single mix could produce so much more than what Writer and Director Dennis Lee gives us here, but instead of popping out as a memorable character piece, it fizzles out as all the familiar clichés are hit with nothing new rising to the top.

The Samurai Trilogy (Criterion) Director Hiroshi Inagaki’s sprawling epic filmed from 1954-56 is an early Japanese Technicolor masterpiece, rivaling the scope of filmmakers like David Lean and Luchino Visconti. The three films: the Oscar winning “Musashi Miyamoto,” “Duel at Ichijoji Temple,” and “Duel at Ganryu Island” are an incredible story of human growth, tender love and sublime, blood-soaked action. It's a pretty sparse week for DVD and Blu-ray releases thanks in large part to the holiday weekend, but if you dig a little bit, you just mind find something worth watching. The biggest releases of the week are a pair of indie flicks: Bobcat Goldthwait's dark comedy God Bless America and the Willem Dafoe thriller The Hunter. Some other small but noteworthy films out this week include Jesus Henry Christ starring Toni Collette and Michael Sheen, the Martin Freeman / Mandy Moore comedy Swinging with the Finkels, and the genre festival hit Some Guy Who Kills People. New to Blu-ray we also have Barbarella, Tough Enough starring Dennis Quad, and the always inspirational John Travolta drama Phenomenon, plus let's not forget the soon-to-be-classic stoner comedy Mac & Devin Go to High School starring Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa. What will you be buying or renting this week? Check out the...

The Champs Elysees Film Festival’s U.S. President is Michael Madsen
The French Festival President is Lambert Wilson
The discussions held so often about the sustainability of arthouse theaters, about the joining of forces between them and festivals and the ownership of festivals themselves, and sometimes of theaters as well, by distributors as a way to sustain the three key players of this precious triangle of culture, continue as the first Champs Elysees Film Festival presents a jam-packed line up and full program of events at its inaugural edition.
The seven day festival, June 6-12, has been formed and is owned by the independent distributor Sophie Dulac. It is exciting for me to go to see the arthouses we have already written about in the area of the Champs Elysees - the Balzac, its rival the Lincoln, the Publicis, and the two major chains, Gaumont Champs Elysees and Ugc George V. Another interesting aspect of this upcoming event is the festival's ownership by a French distributor, Sophie Dulac. This is one of two similarities between Gutek and Dulac. The New Horizons and the American Film Festivals are owned by Roman Gutek whose distribution company Gutek is the largest arthouse distributor in Poland. Similarly Sophie Dulac seems to "own" this festival. Somewhat analagous to this is the "owning" of distribution company Tribeca Films by the Tribeca Film Festival or the Sundance Select Distribution arm owned by the Sundance Film Festival. The New York Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festivals have yet to declare themselves distributors but do own the arthouses in which to show "their" films year round in festival settings.
Dulac explains the impetus to launch the Champs Elysees Film Festival, “As Paris’ first truly international film festival, our mission is to create a bridge between the independent American and French film industries. In the most beautiful city in the world and one with a worldwide association to cinema, the Champs Elysées Film Festival will be a celebration of film promoting the work of young filmmakers and honoring the work of established directors.” She adds, “We want to throw a spotlight on independent film from France and the U.S. We will welcome famous names, offer new films, open up discussions between members of the film industry, give short films a special showcase and invite audiences to gala previews.”
I personally hope the tourists of Champs Elysees see this as a special opportunity to share inside festival experiences with international professionals and that it brings in more business than ordinary theatrical fare brings to the same theaters, thus proving that festivals serve as a new branch of film distribution and that the joining of forces between distributor, exhibitor and festival point toward a new mode of profitability for all parties.
U.S. in Progress was first presented at the American Film Festival in Wroclaw Poland in November. This is the second similarity between Dulac and Gutek. U.S. in Progress will now be here as well. U.S. in Progress is in fact a joint initiative between the American Film Festival in Wroclaw, the Champs Elysees Film Festival in Paris and Black Rabbit Film, a company of Adeline Monzier who also created the association of European indie distributors called EuropaDistribution. It is the first and only industry event devoted to U.S. indies in Europe. Its aim is to present U.S. indie films in post-production to European buyers in order to foster the circulation and distribution of American indie films in Europe. This presentation of American independent films in post-production to European buyers to promote the distribution of American independent films in Europe is uniquely one of the top new developments in the industry. The program works to forge inroads between the generation of talented American filmmakers emerging today and European buyers. I am so proud to be serving on its jury as I did on the first edition as well.
The other sections are: Official Selection of American Independent Films, French Galas, American Galas, Oscar Nominated Foreign Language Films and Shorts.

Julia Roberts and Danny Moder were arm in arm at the Jonathan Beach Club in Santa Monica last night. They paired up for Heal the Bay's Bring Back the Bay charity event, which also brought out Amy Smart, Ali Larter, and Julia-Louis Dreyfus. Julia wore a polka-dot Moschino jumpsuit to the fundraising gala, where she and her husband Danny were honored along with Amy for their leadership and environmental accomplishments. Amy's husband Carter Oosterhouse was on hand for support. Julia is coming off a busy few months that included promoting Mirror Mirror with costar Lily Collins and premiering Jesus Henry Christ with Michael Sheen. It shouldn’t have been a surprise, but “The Hunger Games” not only fell from the top spot after four weeks… it was pulverized. The Steve Harvey-powered “Think Like a Man” took advantage of a big ad campaign to debut to unprecedented numbers, scoring massive 'A' level approval from audiences reporting to Cinemascore while almost tripling its reported $12 million budget. This is the third big hit for Sony’s Screen Gems division this year, following “Underworld: Awakening” and “The Vow.” Not really the best studio to encourage, guys.
Most didn’t expect the ensemble film to break out in this manner, as they chose to ignore the fact that “Think Like a Man” had been testing better than any Sony film in recent memory. They also neglected the fact that, while the picture had a large cast, they made the decision to spotlight comedian Kevin Hart front-and-center during the ad campaign.

Title: Jesus Henry Christ Director: Dennis Lee Starring: Michael Sheen, Toni Collette, Jason Spevack, Samantha Weinstein, Frank Moore A canted coming-of-age tale about a 10-year-old prodigy who sets out to find his biological father, writer-director Dennis Lee’s “Jesus Henry Christ,” executive-produced by Julia Roberts, uses the loose thematic conceit of burgeoning self-identity as a jumping off point for a colorful and at times funny but mostly emotionally hollow exploration of adolescent isolation and yearning for acceptance. An adaptation of Lee’s Student Academy Award-winning short film of the same name, “Jesus Henry Christ” takes as its central figure Henry (Jason Spevack), a precocious boy genius who’s been speaking since he was but an infant, and is [ Read More ]...

It was a family affair at the Jesus Henry Christ premiere in Hollywood last night. Coproducers and sisters Julia Roberts and Lisa Roberts Gillan were joined by their brother Eric's daughter, Emma Roberts, as they celebrated the debut of the dark comedy. Julia's husband Danny Moder also served as cinematographer on the project, though he didn't join the ladies for the evening out. The screening was held inside Mann's Chinese Theatre, where castmembers like Michael Sheen walked the carpet. He was without his girlfriend and former Midnight in Paris costar, Rachel McAdams, but looked dapper as he spoke proudly about the film solo. Jesus Henry Christ tells the story of a child prodigy who goes in search of his biological father, played by Michael. Julia was behind the camera this time around in her role as a producer, but she mentioned feeling a little nervous on the night of the film's debut anyway.

It’s been six years since Toni Collette and Steve Carell shared the screen in Little Miss Sunshine, but Oscar-winning writers Jim Rash and Nat Faxon look set to reunite them for directorial debut The Way, Way Back.Rash and Faxon – who scored the golden baldie this year for co-writing The Descendants with Alexander Payne – have set up the film about a teen boy who struggles through a summer holiday while dealing with a bored, inattentive mother (Collette) and a drinking, drugging and cheating stepfather (Carell, in a role that sounds like it’ll be a real change from his usual loveable schlubs). The two are joining a cast that already includes Allison Janney, Sam Rockwell and Annasophia Robb, with the co-directors set to kick off production this summer thanks to their script’s appearance on the 2010 Black List. They also have an untitled action comedy pitch floating around with Kristen Wiig attached to star.

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.

There’s a good mix of work coming out in April and the posters do well to mirror such. I’m not quite sure how Rodrigo Cortés‘ could have his first film Buried possess one of the best poster series of 2010 and then return to big screens with the lackluster Vodka Creative sheet for Atm, but not everything can be perfect.
I can’t complain too much, however, since the month does bring some quality pieces of marketing material. And while Jack Black‘s creepy pedo-stash and Cardinal...

Miss me kids? I missed you, though you're always in great hands with Louis, who was kind to fill in for me on top of his other duties. I try not to do it to him often. Of course, I'm doing it again in a couple weeks. Remember when I went last year and spoke to OUTLaw at Washington & Lee Law School last year? They're having a debate between Maggie Gallagher and Andrew Sullivan April 4th at 6Pm and invited me back. Plus it gets me some rare face time with our fearless leader, Dennis.
But on to things that matter, like the fact that Smash has been renewed for a second season. It's uneven, but I really am hopeful for the show. One major change is that creator/showrunner Theresa Rebeck won't be back, but will live on in Debra Messing's character, who was loosely based on her.

Here's an acting duo I never would've thought of putting together, but makes total sense. Toni Collette and Michael Sheen star in Jesus Henry Christ, a dysfunctional family comedy that's very much in the vain of Little Miss Sunshine (my favorite Collette piece of acting). Jason Spevack stars as her son and he's seeking his biological father. Guess who that is? See the trailer after the jump.

Here's the trailer to a charming looking film called Jesus Henry Christ, which has a great cast that includes Michael Sheen and Toni Collette. The story basically follows a 10-year-old genius who's a test tube baby that goes on a search for his father. The movie looks like it's one of those quirky indie feel good comedies.
Here's the Synopsis:
Precocious doesn't even begin to describe Henry James Herman, a petri dish child who writes rabble-rousing manifestos on the nature of truth... at age 10. This boy-genius misfit's world turns upside down when--to the dismay of the doting single mother who raised him--he embarks on a search for his biological father.
The movie was directed by Dennis Lees, and it comes out on April 20th, 2012. Check out the trailer below.

We can’t yet determine how these two endeavors will turn out, but Michael Sheen is moving away from Twilight and Jesus Henry Christ. For that alone, this is an improvement.
Anyway, Variety informs us that the Welsh actor is in talks for Mariah Mundi & the Midas Box, a film version of G.P. Taylor‘s children’s novel that Jonathan Newman has been tapped to direct. Sam Neill, Lena Headey, and Ioan Gruffud are also being eyed for the Victorian London-set story that tell of “a 15-year-old boy, Mariah Mundi, whose world is torn apart by the disappearance of his parents, then the kidnapping of younger brother by unknown assailants.”
Sheen will play an “Indiana Jones-ish adventurer, Captain Charity, [with whom] he sets off in pursuit, arriving at the Prince Regent, a hotel hiding a fantastical underworld.” Dr. Grant will appear as “an arch villain,” Sarah Connor “his witch-seductress,” the main...

HollywoodNews.com: I don’t know why Senator Entertainment has finally exhumed “Fireflies in the Garden,” produced by Julia Roberts. They just announced that after three years, Americans can be exposed to this undercooked and rather dull “family drama.” Robert produced it for husband Danny Moder, who did the cinematography. But otherwise, she’s really not a major player in this minor offering.
“Fireflies” has already been released internationally, making a little over $3 million. It was very popular in places where English is a second language, like Germany and Italy. In the United Kingdom, where the audience could understand what was happening, no one went. I guess the idea now is that Ryan Reynolds, who stars in the film, has built up a following.
I thought by now “Fireflies” would be on DVD. I can’t believe it hasn’t been shown on airplanes and elsewhere. Roberts...

HollywoodNews.com: “Larry Crowne” is not a great film and it’s not exactly creating a stampede to the box office. On Friday night, Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts only mustered $4 mil at the box office. They’ll be lucky to have $16 mil in the till by Monday night. But it’s not all that bad. For one thing, “Larry Crowne” did better last night than the last Hanks-Roberts combo. “Charlie Wilson’s War” opened to less than $3 million in 2007 on its opening night. It went on to earn $66 million–which I am sure everyone at Universal, and Tom and Gary Goetzman at PlayTone would be thrilled with if it happened.
“Larry Crowne” cost $30 million to make (it looks it) plus probably $10 million for prints, ads, and promotion. It’s not like they took over Times Square or Red Square for opening nights. In the end it will break even.

Hollywood superstar Julia Roberts has no intention of ever stepping behind the camera to take charge of a movie, insisting the only thing she's capable of directing is her family's mealtimes.
The Pretty Woman star shot to international stardom when she was 21 and has since expanded her craft to include producing projects such as independent picture Jesus Henry Christ and her recent TV documentary Extraordinary Moms.
But Roberts, 43, is adamant she will never direct a film for herself.
She tells W magazine, "I can direct breakfast, lunch and dinner. I take pride in my kitchen, but I'm not going to direct a movie."
Instead, the mother-of-three hopes to continue using her influence in Hollywood to champion other movies she believes in, like she did for Javier Bardem and his emotional drama Biutiful in the run-up to the 2011 Academy Awards.
Her outspoken support for the movie helped Bardem land an Oscar nomination, and Roberts is proud he earned the recognition he deserved.
She says, "I was the loudmouth on that. It was such a crazy travesty that the movie wasn't getting attention. And it's fun to throw your weight around. That's one of the perks of what we do."...

In what is no doubt a just and understandable reaction, great tragedies are often met with concerned -- and often probing -- attention from the media in the short term, and artists over the long haul. This is never more true than when grisly murders are committed, and victims are so clear cut from aggressors.
But long-term, what often is forgotten about is that the culprit rarely comes from some shadowy organization or has generations of evil blood coursing through his or her veins. Those that knew and loved that aggressor are also victims, left to contemplate who they thought they knew and what steps they could have taken to prevent such tragedy.
That side of the story is explored in "Beautiful Boy," a new film about the parents of a college campus shooter (Michael Sheen & Mario Bello) who find themselves wrecked by the carnage their son wrought. A winner...

The Tribeca Film Festival claimed another acquisition deal for its titles when Magnolia Pictures picked up the Butch Cassidy Western Blackthorn. According to Deadline, Mateo Gil directed Sam Shepard, Stephen Rea, Eduardo Noriega and Nicolaj Coster-Waldeau from a script about Cassidy’s final days by Miguel Barros. Blackthorn premiered at Tribeca last week along with The Union, Cameron Crowe's documentary about Elton John's collaboration with Leon Russell and the comedy Jesus Henry Christ. The Tribeca Film Festival celebrated its tenth birthday this year after co-founders Jane Rosenthal, Craig Hatkoff and Robert De Niro started the event to help energize New York in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Oscar-nominated actress Toni Collette has given birth to a baby boy.
The United States of Tara star and her husband, musician David Galafassi, celebrated the arrival of Arlo Robert in Australia on Friday.
Her representative tells People.com, "He was born on Good Friday making it the greatest Friday, indeed!"
The couple, which wed in 2003, already has one daughter, Sage, three.
The baby's birth forced Collette to miss out on the premiere of her new film, the Julia Roberts-produced Jesus Henry Christ, at New York City's Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday.
