Last July, Oprah Winfrey’s Own network scored a big one when it signed train-wreck Lindsay Lohan to an eight-episode docu-series following her as she tried to stay sober and re-launch her career after a court-ordered rehab stint; it was part of a deal that also included Lohan’s post-rehab interview special on Oprah’s Next Chapter. There’s no party I haven’t gone to, nobody I haven’t hung out with, no situation I haven’t been exposed to,” 27-year-old Lohan tells the camera as she swans here and there. “I don’t...

Documentarian Amy Rice ("By the People: The Election of Barack Obama") was the lucky (?) filmmaker chosen to attempt to shoot Lindsay Lohan's recovery for the docuseries "Lindsay," premiering this Sunday, March 9th at 10pm on Oprah Winfrey's Own. Winfrey interviewed the troubled starlet after her latest stint in rehab in August of last year, which lead to the two agreeing to make the eight-part series documenting Lohan's experiences as she moves back to New York and tries to maintain her sobriety. The trailer for the series, below, suggests that Lohan isn't anywhere near ready to have this process put on the screen -- halfway through, Rice appears to note that they were supposed to film that day, but were being kept out of the actress' apartment by her sober coach. "This is exactly what everybody said was going to happen," Winfrey says while heading to meet with Lohan...

The trailer the network presented at the Television Critics Association this morning (which hasn't been put online) made this development part of the narrative, with footage of Rice expressing her exasperation about Lohan's constant cancellations and rescheduling. Last month, I had the privilege to sit with the incomparable Edward Norton for a 1-on-1 discussion about his arresting turn in Stone, the themes and importance of sound in the film, and working with Robert De Niro for the second time. Plus we bounced around to touch on his dual comedic performances in Leaves of Grass (out now on DVD), The Incredible Hulk, his guest appearance on “Modern Family,” the possibility of a Rounders sequel, and briefly about his HBO miniseries “Undaunted Courage” about the expedition of Lewis and Clark. Here’s what he had to say:
Can you talk about preparing for this role in Stone?
Norton: It was very contained to this one… The prison we shot in was half closed and half active. I really didn’t do much other than sit in rooms and talk to inmates. They’d just bring them in and let me pick their brains.

Chicago – When Barack Obama took to the podium at Grant Park and gave his acceptance speech on the evening of November 4, 2008, his face appeared strangely reserved. His eyes did not reflect the overwhelming excitement of his supporters. Their grassroots efforts led to the election of a candidate whose popularity transcended national boundaries, injecting cynics with hope.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Obama could make a believer out of anyone except, perhaps, himself. With all eyes averted eagerly toward him, the newly elected President of the United States looked cool, composed and utterly daunted. Was he simply attempting to maintain a grounded calm, a la Lovie Smith? Or was he beginning to fear that his campaign had somehow oversold his abilities to clean up a mess sure to linger throughout several presidencies? Now that he had the whole world in his hands, was he afraid that he would fumble the ball?

Chicago – Jeff Deutchman’s “11/4/08” is a documentary like no other. It centers on the historic Election Day of 2008 that named Barack Obama as the next American president. Deutchman called on his friends, including Joe Swanberg (“Hannah Takes the Stairs”) and Henry Joost (“Catfish”), to capture footage from the day both nationally and internationally, from Manhattan to Dubai.
As a self-proclaimed “piece of consensual cinema,” the film invites viewers to literally participate in the experience, submitting their own footage via the website 11-4-08.com. HollywoodChicago.com interviewed Deutchman a day before his film’s nationwide theatrical premiere.

So last year I joined Twitter and desperately struggled to figure out a good use for it. Assuming most people following my account might come from the Film Junk podcast, I thought it might be an idea platform to keep track of what films I've been watching and what ratings I give them. My first post was March 9th, 2009 with David Cronenberg's The Brood (3.5/4) and since then I've managed to check out a good number of great films over the last year. (Jacques Tati's Play Time and Wim Wender's Paris, Texas are definitely two stand outs on this list.) Many of these are first time viewings, but a there are also a lot of movies I just felt the urge to revisit. So what do you think? Any favourites? Have a look for yourself after the jump! The Brood, (Cronenberg, 1979) 3.5/4 Operation Crossbow (Anderson, 1965) 3.5/4 Watchmen, (Snyder, 2009) 3/4 Pontypool, (McDonald, 2008) 4/4 Pinocchio,...

2012 (3-disc Se) Blu-raysony Pictures Entertainment 2009/Rated PG-13/158 minsAVAILABLE Today – List Price $39.98Roland Emmerich has to be a friggin' nut. The director loves giving us sheer spectacle, yet his films are so poorly constructed, sometimes feeling as if they were written on toilet paper. '2012' is a movie almost as easily disposable as toilet paper, yet it's one of those pictures you walk out of thinking “what the hell did I just see?” I thought I had seen it all with Todd Phillips' 'The Hangover' being the best and funniest film of last year. Boy was I wrong. That distinction now belongs to Emmerich's latest epic, though it's not the best film of 2009 and its humorous appeal was by no means intentional. It says a lot about us as a people when we get a kick out of watching disaster unfold onscreen even if it is fictional.

I was watching "By the People: The Election of Barack Obama" (available on HBO On Demand), and I noticed one of those funnier-in-hindsight moments that pop up sometimes. This documentary reveals much of the artifice involved in any political campaign, but on the heels of Sarah Palin's much-hyped "Handgate" gaffe, there's a neat pre-echo of that incident during a debate prep sequence. I think it underscores the silliness of the media's newfound obsession with "optics," and their misunderstanding of them.

Chicago – HollywoodChicago.com recently interviewed Edward Norton on the new HBO documentary “By the People: The Election of Barack Obama” along with co-directors Amy Rice and Alicia Sams. Edward Norton served as a producer.
Question: What did this campaign and this candidate do to motivate kids (like 9-year-old Lorenzo Rivera) in such a way that they would hit the phones for Barack Obama in support?
Edward Norton.

Producer Edward Norton: It’s interesting because in some ways that’s what made us want to start this (project) in the first place. When Amy (Rice) first proposed it to us, it wasn’t a campaign film.
The idea was to chronicle this junior senator as he entered into the battle of government and politics. I think what drew us to him in the same way it drew everyone else was that he was so much younger.

HBO has closed a seven-figure deal for U.S. rights to an untitled Barack Obama documentary from producer Edward Norton.
Norton's Class 5 Films approached the Obama campaign in early 2006 about a doc chronicling the new president elect's history in politics. Directors Amy Rice and Alicia Sams were granted extensive access to film Obama before he launched his presidential run in 2007 and have continued their shoot through his historic victory this week.
HBO, which has been pursuing rights for several months, plans to air the feature-length docu next year. The footage, culled from 2 1/2 years of filming, includes interviews with Obama, his senior campaign staff, family, friends and volunteers.
