Famous for his performances in the thrillers Argo (2012) and Gone Girl (2014) and the dramas Pearl Harbor (2001) and The Last Duel (2021), Ben Affleck is not really known as a comedy actor. Even the viral pictures of him frustratingly looking nowhere present him as “sad”, building a strong, though unfair association with Affleck’s acting range.
However, back in 1997, the actor starred in a romantic dramedy, which can now seem ground-breaking, as here Affleck is obviously sad due to his unrequited love, just like in the memes, but, nevertheless, delivers quite a rare, convincing comedy performance.
The movie revolves around Holden and Banky, who are thick as thieves and are the two authors of a popular comic book. Their life-long friendship is strained by Holden’s growing feelings for Alyssa, whom they meet while promoting their new work.

Projects centered around the left-wing revolutionary group, the Black Panther Party, continue to fascinate popular culture. In 2022, Daniel Kaluuya won an Oscar for portraying the betrayed deputy chairman, Fred Hampton, in the bio-crime drama, “Judas and the Black Messiah.” Now, a new limited series, “The Big Cigar,” based on a Playboy Article by Joshuah Bearman (known for the Wired Article that inspired “Argo”), tells the too-good-to-be-true story of Black Panther co-founder Huey Percy Newton’s escape to Cuba with the assistance of a famous film producer.

Even as he collected his martini, the burly stranger who introduced himself as “Joe” exuded an aura of belligerence. We were standing on the fringe of a post-screening reception, so, hand extended, I blurted, “Did the movie work for you?”
“It was blah,” he replied. “Given what they spent for the script, they should have made a powerful f*ckin’ movie.”
At the time I didn‘t realize I was talking with Joe Eszterhas, who had made $4 million from sale of his script — more an auction than a sale and hardly “blah.” Joe and several estimable writing colleagues were participants in what came to be known in the mid-‘80s as the “Writers Rebellion,” a moment when top screenwriters decided to reinvent what they considered a broken system for propagating their creative product.

Actor Kevin Conroy has been synonymous with Batman ever since he rendered his voice to the character in Batman: The Animated Series. The actor has gone on to lend his voice to Batman and Bruce Wayne in other media such as the Arkham games as well as WB’s DC Animated Universe films such as Batman: The Killing Joke and Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.
While Conroy has been known for his particular brand of performing the iconic superhero, he reportedly had issues with the way Zack Snyder depicted him in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016. The voice actor reportedly had issues, particularly with Batman’s penchant for killing in the film as he is famously known for his ‘no-kill’ rule.

America. The land of the free, and the home of buck wild political thrillers. That’s not to take anything away from the ample international political thrillers in existence. But there is something about the United States that seems to make it an ideal setting for suspense built around corruption and conspiracy. Maybe it’s the country’s (misguided) sense of triumph and greatness: when a country is founded on ideals of democracy and liberty, a great yarn about the darkness behind its government is harder to resist. Whatever the case, the country has a great history of political thrillers, some of which stand as all time greats.
As a genre, political thrillers unquestionably hit their peak in the mid-‘70s, thanks to a combination of the JFK assassination, renewed cynicism against the federal government against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, and an honest-to-god conspiracy theory in the form of Watergate.

Apple TV+ has unveiled a first look at ‘The Big Cigar,’ the highly anticipated limited drama series that chronicles the story of Black Panther leader Huey P. Newton’s escape to Cuba, and is based on the monumental, eponymous magazine article of the same name.
Legendary, award-winning actor, producer and director Don Cheadle serves as director and executive producer on the first two episodes.
Based on the magazine article by Joshuah Bearman (“Argo”), who will also serve as executive producer, “The Big Cigar” is the incredible true story of the Hollywood revolution meeting social revolution: it’s a wild caper of Black Panther founder Huey Newton escaping from the FBI to Cuba with the assistance of famed producer Bert Schneider in an impossibly elaborate plan – involving a fake movie production — that goes wrong every way it possibly can. And somehow, it’s all true. Mostly.

While winning one Oscar in any category is an achievement for any celebrity in a lifetime, Ben Affleck has laid his hands on the coveted golden statuette twice in two different disciplines. The actor won his first Oscar with Matt Damon for the pair’s brilliant screenplay in Good Will Hunting. Years later, Affleck picked up his second award when his directorial Argo which he also produced, won Best Picture.

While the true story impressed many critics and audiences, it also led to polarizing views and divisive opinions regarding the execution of its narrative in certain parts. Nevertheless, one seemingly irrelevant moment featuring a Led Zeppelin track proves that the film and Affleck deserved to win top honors.

Despite its doomy story, three-hour length – and some remarkable competition – Christopher Nolan’s film dominated the Academy Awards. We examine the campaign behind the slowburner which blew Barbie away
“It wasn’t that much of a rivalry,” joked Emily Blunt, during a bit of onstage cross-talk with Ryan Gosling at the Oscars – and she wasn’t far wrong when it came to winning awards. Blunt, who appeared in Oppenheimer and was nominated for best supporting actress, and Gosling, the now legendary Ken in Barbie, traded a few gags at the microphone, but there was no getting away from the reality: as far as the Oscars were concerned, the A-bomb film had nuked the walking-talking-doll movie.

After ringing in Monday celebrating Universal’s Oscar wins, led by Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Donna Langley sent congratulatory note thanking all of those on her team who helped make the victory possible.
Oppenheimer picked up seven wins, including best picture and best director (Nolan’s first), while Focus Features’ The Holdovers won best supporting actress for Da’Vine Joy Randolph’ performance. The evening was a big win for Langley, who lured Nolan to the studio after he split ways with Warner Bros., and made a bet on his R-rated biopic.
“I hope you are all still reveling in what we accomplished last night. Eight total Academy Award wins for Universal and Focus Features! It was a pinch-me moment for us — well, eight pinch-me moments,” Langley wrote. Last year, the longtime Universal movie chief expanded her power base exponentially when named NBCUniversal’s chief content officer.

The movies, if I dare say it, used to hold us together. They were a shared dream — which is why I wanted to become a film critic, not a poetry critic. The mass mythology of movies felt singular, intoxicating, enveloping, cathartic. And the Oscars have always been part of that. In embracing the world of movies, they seemed to embrace the whole world, period.
But less so recently. We live in a splintered time, with everything divided into niches, clubs, cults, and opposing sides that don’t speak to each other. When it comes to entertainment, there are so many options that it now feels like too many. Yet the staggering success of “Oppenheimer” reminded us of how all that could come back together. A subject of transcendent importance. A drama of stunning ambition and audacity. And an audience of staggering size, enthralled around the globe. That’s more than just success.

Plenty of $1 billion box office hits have been nominated for best picture, but Academy voters have tended to opt for smaller, specialty fare when handing out the top prize. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer upended the traditional order Sunday night when it won best picture at Oscars 2024, one of seven wins for the historical biopic.
The film has reaped north of $957 million at the worldwide box office, the top gross of any best picture victor since The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King in 2004 (that grossed $1.15 billion). Oppenheimer is also the first best picture winner in more than a decade to earn north of $100 million at the domestic box office since Ben Affeck’s Argo (that earned $136 million domestically and $232.3 million globally.) And it’s the first best picture winner released in July — the heart of summer movie season — since Forrest Gump in 1994.

Both Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck have been some of the most influential actors throughout their respective careers. Yet, while the former was the first one to win recognition in the entertainment industry among the two of them, the latter seemingly defeated the now-retired actor when it came to the Oscars race.

And as it turned out, Affleck winning the first-ever Academy Award of his career happened right around the time when he and Willis were working on their only film together, 1998’s Armageddon. This is why the retired actor was always mocking his younger co-star during their time working together and gave him a hard time for having earned such immaculate success so soon!

Forget what that Christmas song says! Here at TV Fanatic, we think award season is the most wonderful time of the year.
And in terms of both television ratings and general global interest, award shows don't get any bigger than the Academy Awards.
The stakes are higher than usual this year, as some major blockbuster films with some very devoted fan bases appear to be neck-and-neck in some of the major categories.
The race between Barbie and Oppenheimer (two quite different films that hit theaters on the same day) might be getting the most attention, but there's always a chance that a dark horse could sneak up from behind and snatch Best Picture away from both front runners.
Meanwhile, several of the acting categories are anyone's game and certain to create controversy no matter the outcome.

And in terms of both television ratings and general global interest, award shows don't get any bigger than the Academy Awards.

Will “Oppenheimer” clean up? Probably. But how much? In lead actress, who will win the battle of the stones: Lily Gladstone or Emma Stone? Will “Barbie” pick up anything besides best song?
So many categories to consider, and this week’s episode goes deep on the 23 categories, including the lesser-known ones that will be make or break in your pool.

We Oscarologists (ridiculous name) spend our time trying to read certain tea leaves to figure out what a potential Best Picture winner typically needs to win in order to take home the Oscars’ top prize. Best Director was once the most important category to excel in. Then it was Best Editing that we thought a Best Picture hopeful needed to check off. Then, recently, the combination of a writing Oscar and an acting win has proven to be a powerful one for eventual Best Picture winners. But what do the stats say? Well, we’ve combed through every Best Picture winner of this century and documented which other Oscars they won. We then tallied those figures up in this below handy chart:
*A note: For a detailed breakdown of exactly what Oscars each Best Picture winner of this century won, head here while you can find a full breakdown of...

There is an update on The Accountant 2, the sequel to The Accountant, released in 2016, starring Ben Affleck. The original film saw Affleck play the role of a highly skilled certified public accountant (Cpa) on the autism spectrum who goes by the name Christian Wolff. In the movie, Wolff is a forensic accountant for criminal organizations.
Upon finding inconsistencies in a legitimate robotics company, Wolff has to navigate through a perilous network of deception while simultaneously trying to be ahead of not only the law but also his criminal clients. The sequel to this crime-action thriller has found a new home.

The films vying for the 2024 Best Sound Oscar are “The Creator,” “Maestro,” “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” “Oppenheimer,” and “The Zone of Interest.” Our current odds indicate that “Oppenheimer” (31/10) will prevail, followed in order of likelihood by “The Zone of Interest” (37/10), “Maestro” (9/2), “Mission: Impossible” (9/2), and “The Creator” (9/2).
This year’s Best Sound award will be the fourth handed out since the former Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories were consolidated ahead of the 93rd Oscars. The 17 craftspeople involved in this race have collectively amassed 70 previous nominations and 16 wins for their audio work, with the largest share of those bids (30%) belonging to Kevin O’Connell (“Oppenheimer”). With an Oscars resume dating back to 1984, he stands as one of this lineup’s nine returning champions, having memorably broken his unprecedented losing streak on his 21st bid for “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017).

The former allies from the late DC Extended Universe, Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill are unarguably two of the biggest hotshots in Hollywood. Despite the more-than-a-decade-long age gap, one is renowned for the excellence he showed as the masterbrain Batman and the other is famous for exceptionally leading the Justice League as Superman.

Yet while Cavill may have had a slightly more elevated position in the DC Extended Universe, he doesn’t hold the same against Affleck in real life. Because in real life, the Batman portrayer actually holds an unbelievable box office record that the former Superman just may never be able to break if he continues to make box-office disasters like Argylle.

Summer blockbusters “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” are back to vying against each other in this category now that the Academy has switched two-time screenwriter Oscar nominees Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach’s outrageous based-on-an-unwritten-character scenario from Original back to Adapted.
Also nominated twice for screenwriting, Christopher Nolan painstakingly created a twisty ticking-bomb timeline for “Oppenheimer,” which is adapted from Kai Bird and Martin Sherwin’s lauded tome “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer.” Every word counts as a gamut of real-life characters move in and out of the frame, always centered on the point-of-view of scientist Oppenheimer and...

Apple TV+ has added more than 50 licensed movies included in the price of the subscription service — the streamer’s biggest collection of back-catalog studio content to date. But the third-party titles will only be available for a limited time.
Apple TV+’s lineup has mostly comprised original series, movies and specials commissioned for the platform (as well as a smattering of live MLB games). Now it has added a bouquet of older film favorites to the mix, including popular and award-winning movies like “Titanic,” “300,” “Argo,” “Black Hawk Down,” “The Bodyguard,” “Jurassic World,” “Gravity,” “Fast & Furious 6,” “Kill Bill” Volume 1 and 2, “Star Trek Into Darkness,” “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” the original 2004 “Mean Girls” and “Zoolander.”
The movies are listed in a new section on the service labeled “Great Movies on Apple TV+” — however, the service notes, these are available for a “limited time.

The move could signal a shift in strategy by Apple to finally incorporate more library titles into its catalog.
Is Apple TV+ finally getting non-original titles in its streaming library? Yes, at least temporarily, at any rate, as the streamer has added a total of 51 movies to its streaming catalog, spanning every genre and including some true blockbusters. Apple stresses that these titles will only be available for a limited time, but it could be providing a glimpse into its own future with the additions. Having long focused on high-quality originals without the studio archives or licensing library of its competitors, Apple V+ has been a somewhat different type of streamer since it launched in November 2019.
Titles available on Apple TV+ include “Star Trek,” “Kill Bill,” “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” “300” and more. Each movie will only be available on the streamer until March or April. Apple has resisted offering library titles before,...

Actor-director Ben Affleck and actress-singer Jennifer Lopez rekindled their romance in 2021 after almost 20 years. However, the ‘Argo’ star had a request. Ben didn’t want their relationship to play out in front of her followers, reports ‘People’ magazine.
Ben made the revelation in the new Prime Video documentary ‘The Greatest Love Story Never Told’.
“Getting back together, I said, ‘Listen, one of the things I don’t want is a relationship on social media’,” the actor and director, 51, recalls.
“Then I sort of realised it’s not a fair thing to ask. It’s sort of like, you’re gonna marry a boat captain and you go, ‘Well, I don’t like the water’.”
As per ‘People’, despite Ben’s apprehensions, the couple has made it work, getting engaged in April 2022 and tying the knot in Las Vegas that July.

Just 30 minutes after final voting for the Screen Actors Guild Awards wrapped up, I made a last-minute switch in my best actress prediction — from Lily Gladstone in “Killers of the Flower Moon” to Emma Stone in “Poor Things.” Let this be a lesson: Second-guessing yourself is seldom a good idea.
Lily Gladstone made history as the first Native American and Indigenous person to clinch an individual SAG Award for her portrayal of Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman, in Martin Scorsese’s gripping crime saga. With a lead actress (drama) Golden Globe and a SAG Award now under her belt, Gladstone’s award-season momentum continues to be formidable. Historically, only seven performers have failed to win the Oscar after winning the unique combination of Globe and SAG:
1995: Lauren Bacall (“The Mirror Has Two Faces”) lost to Juliette Binoche 2001: Russell Crowe (“A Beautiful Mind”) lost to Denzel Washington (“Training Day...

In the Hollywood scene, there was a competition brewing in the Affleck family, but it wasn’t on the big screen; it was over Dunkin’ Donuts. The winners of the 77th annual BAFTA Awards were revealed on February 18, just four days before Oscar voters begin weighing in with their choices for the winners of the 96th annual Academy Awards. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has approximately 10,000 voting members as does the motion picture academy.
The BAFTAs and Oscars have 19 categories in common. Last year, they agreed on just seven races, all of which were below-the line. The BAFTA Awards went all in on “All Quiet on the Western Front” awarding it a lucky seven wins including Best Picture and Best Director while the Academy Awards did the same for “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” And none of the four BAFTA acting winners took to the podium at the Oscars.

[Editor’s note: This following article spoils the ending of “This Is Me…Now: A Love Story.” We promise you, this doesn’t matter.]
For Ben Affleck fans who thought his small role as Phil Knight in “Air” just needed to be a little Bigger, Prime Video has a film for you.
And yet, “film” isn’t exactly the right word. The 65-minute “narrative-driven cinematic odyssey” (press release’s words) for Jennifer Lopez’s wannabe-“Lemonade,” “This Is Me…Now: A Love Story,” follows her search for love, set alongside music videos for several songs off her new album of the same name (also out today!). It’s a bombastic, simplistic misfire.
Opening with a Puerto Rican myth about roses and hummingbirds, viewers are treated to J.Lo working in a steampunk love factory (complete with a giant mechanical heart about to explode!) and a fictionalized-but-clearly-autobiographical tale about realizing she’s a love addict. She’s searching for love in several doomed marriages, before learning the person she really needs to love is…herself.

Actress Jennifer Garner is widely known for her roles in films such as 13 Going On 30, Juno, and Pearl Harbour. The actress is known for her appearances in romantic comedies and indie dramas. She is also known for her public relationship, marriage, and divorce to actor-director Ben Affleck.
Garner is reportedly in talks to play a role in Ben Affleck’s upcoming directorial Animals. The crime thriller reportedly features Affleck’s friend Matt Damon in the lead role and is produced by the friends under their Artists Equity banner. In addition to all of the Barbies and Kens who lived in Barbieland, there was also Allan, who happened to be Ken’s best friend, played by Michael Cera. Allan also had his moments, such as the scene where he battled the construction workers in Barbieland’s entrance. Curiously, though, Cera revealed that this was not the original concept for that particular fight scene.
Ben Affleck was supposed to make a cameo appearance in the movie and thus had to fight the construction workers, according to the 39-year-old Ontario-born actor. Unfortunately, the former couldn’t take on the role in Barbie due to his commitment to the biographical sports drama film Air.

The next film to be directed by Ben Affleck, the crime thriller Animals, could be about to star Jennifer Garner as well as Matt Damon.
Having released the Nike-makes-a-shoe drama Air last year, Ben Affleck is set to embark on his next directing project. He’s busy setting up Animals, a crime drama in which Matt Damon will star as a mayoral candidate whose son is kidnapped.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jennifer Garner is in talks to play Damon’s wife in the film. As previously reported, the otherwise undisclosed plot will contain plenty of intrigue – and perhaps a bit of violence: “Surrounded by plenty of enemies, political and otherwise, the husband and wife have no choice but to get their hands dirty in order to save their son,” is how THR describes it.
Over his career as a director, Affleck has tended to gravitate to crime thrillers of one sort or another.

“Barbie” is poised to pull off a jaw-dropping upset in the Oscar race for Best Picture, according to IMDb film editor Keith Simanton. Yes, he concedes that most other pro pundits who make predictions at Gold Derby pick “Oppenheimer” to romp, but beware. Keith has one of the most accurate track records among the many Experts who’ve made award predictions with us through the years.
In our fascinating chat (watch video), Keith acknowledges that “Barbie” underperformed when Oscar nominations were announced. (Most Oscarologists were flabbergasted by the omissions of director Greta Gerwig and superstar Margot Robbie). However, Keith reminds us how outraged Oscar voters once rallied around “Argo” after they snubbed its director Ben Affleck.

(Most Oscarologists were flabbergasted by the omissions of director Greta Gerwig and superstar Margot Robbie). However, Keith reminds us how outraged Oscar voters once rallied around “Argo” after they snubbed its director Ben Affleck.

Ben Affleck’s brand ambassadorship for Dunkin’ leveled up during Sunday’s 2024 Grammys with the debut of the star’s latest spot for the coffee and donut shop chain launching an apparent campaign in which the actor follows in his wife’s footsteps to become a pop star.
The ad, which also features social media star Charli D’Amelio, comes a year after the famous Sad Affleck meme emerged at the 2023 Grammys; the viral moment came when the show’s broadcast caught the actor’s despondent and distant expression as wife Jennifer Lopez danced joyfully next to him.
“Keep laughing,” the actor now says in Sunday night’s spot, as he’s watching a news report about that Grammys moment. ”’He’s bored.’ No — he’s studying, always watching. I can do that. How hard can it be?” Then, in a rapid-fire montage, the 30-second spot shows Affleck in a recording studio,...

What should we make of the “Barbie” blowup?
After the candy-coated phenom debuted last summer to glowing reviews and box office glory, it seemed like a certifiable Oscar juggernaut. Last week as the Academy Award nominations were unveiled, “Barbie” scored a perfectly respectable eight nominations. However, voters overlooked director Greta Gerwig and lead actress Margot Robbie in their respective categories, sparking a social media backlash that threatens to overshadow the awards. It’s disappointing that Gerwig and Robbie’s outstanding work didn’t make the cut, but some perspective is important here. If you’ve only been getting your Oscar analysis from TikTok and X, you’d be forgiven for thinking “Barbie” was completely shut out.
Clearly that wasn’t the case. On one hand, I get the outrage. Female filmmakers still face an uphill climb when it comes to getting jobs and recognition. After all, only eight women have...

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are reteaming once again, this time for a new crime thriller that just landed at Netflix.
Affleck will direct Animals, which will star Damon. It could be shooting in Los Angeles by March, if all the pieces come together.
The secretive project was operating under several titles — The Animals of Los Angeles and Be Gentlemen — before landing on simply Animals.
Written by Connor McIntyre with revisions by Billy Ray, the crime thriller concerns a mayoral candidate and his wife whose son is kidnapped. Surrounded by plenty of enemies, political and otherwise, the husband and wife have no choice but to get their hands dirty in order to save their son.
Affleck and Damon will produce via their Artists Equity, along with the company’s Dani Bernfeld. Also producing are Brad Weston and Collin Creighton via their MakeReady banner. Fifth Season, the production, sales and distribution...

The 2012 political thriller “Argo” made waves when its director, Ben Affleck, was shockingly snubbed for Best Director by the Oscars. But Affleck ended up winning everywhere else he was nominated, and then his film won Best Picture at the Oscars. Could “Barbie” follow a similar path to the academy’s top prize?

Fans of “Barbie” have been vocally protesting the academy’s snub of Greta Gerwig, who was left out of Best Director despite spearheading a movie about a doll that managed to become a box office phenomenon and a critically acclaimed take on feminism and patriarchy. It’s rare for a film to capture the cultural imagination the way “Barbie” did, especially after a long period when Covid shuttered movie theaters and depressed attendance. Many expected the academy to highlight such a directorial achievement, but no.

It’s the surprise Oscars snub that many of us saw coming. Greta Gerwig missed out on a Best Director nomination for “Barbie,” even as the film scored an impressive eight nominations: picture, adapted screenplay, supporting actor (Ryan Gosling), supporting actress (America Ferrera), costume design, song (“I’m Just Ken”), song (“What Was I Made For”) and production design.
So how did Gerwig stumble? Let’s look at the five most likely reasons.
1. “Barbie” had absolutely zero snob appeal.
The Directors Branch of the academy is notoriously highbrow, and its members like to salute what they are feel are genuine, original and unique achievements in the field of film directing. They don’t care about celebrity status or box office. Gerwig was previously cited by the branch for 2017’s “Lady Bird.” She beat out the likes of Martin McDonagh for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and Steven Spielberg for “The Post.
