Crime Busting Duo Saves Dawn and rest of the Day from Noctournal Avian Nest Snatchers!!
redryan6429 June 2007
Warning: Spoilers
..........................As We Have Already Seen............

After falling into the clutches and his henchmen, Bruce Wayne makes good his escape by use of mini-explosive from his Utility Belt.(worn under his civies.) Fleeing the scene, he is dismissed by The Penguin as having been an Industrial Spy!

Returning to The Bat-Cave, Batman & Robin talk over what has transpired and use conjecture as to what will be the next move. Unknown to the Dynamic Duo, the small umbrella from earlier attached to the giant umbrella, has been bugged by the Penguin, who uses the ideas put forth by Batman & Robin to plot out future crimes.(At one point, Robin remarks that all the materials needed to scale a hotel wall and kidnap movie star, Dawn Robbins, "is in their Criminals' Store Room!", at which one of Penguin's gang goes to a large closet marked, "Criminals'Store Room!")

Batman & Robin do save the day and spoil the kidnappers, because they figured out the method of operation by what Penguin said, repeating verbatim Batman's words from earlier.*

Like most all of the best scripts, this 2 parter was an adaption of an adventure from a story in the comics. In this case it is Batman & Robin join Penguin in becoming unwitting "Partners In Plunder!"** The story line was followed, but of course, it was adapted to the parameters of this 'Campy' TV treatment.

But let's not forget, that we had some pretty gruesome activity in a lot of these scripts that, without the 'Camp' business, would reclassify these stories to being brutal and more like Spillane than Kane.

Like what, you say? Well, just think back to the end of part one, MY FINE FEATHERED FINKS! Did not Mr. Bruce Wayne get himself in the clutches of the Baddies and what was Penguin going to do to Bruce? Does not casting a living person into a roaring blast furnace qualify as being extremely cruel, gory and violent method of killing?

Why, it's downright Inhumane!! There outa be a law!!

* It is an interesting point in the story portrayed that a photo shoot was going on using Miss Dawn Robbins (fully clothed, by the way) for fictional Men's Magazine called FUNBOY, complete with Publisher, Mr. Jay (another 'bird' name, played by Actor Dan Tobin.) It would seem interesting from an Anthropological view that the photographic recording of feminine pulchritude was and remains such an important element of our publishing and communications in our culture. Of course in that period of years since this 1966 productions, we have come from relatively tame use of nudity to "anything goes"!

** This story, "Partners in Plunder!", was published in BATMAN COMICS # 169, February, 1965 issue.

VERY GOOD ARGUMENT FOR THE FIRST EPISODE OF THE PENGUIN
asalerno1028 June 2022
Once his sentence is completed, the Penguin is released. But far from having reformed, he devises a sinister plan. He places a microphone in one of his umbrellas knowing that Batman will take it as evidence, then he is in charge of listening to all the deductions that the dynamic duo makes trying to predict the rogue's plans, in this way he manages to anticipate Batman's actions and avoid being Surprised. A very good episode, with excellent opening work from Burgess Meredith.

Bruce Escapes The Burn
DKosty12327 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
In part 2 of the Penguins first plot, the escape is done. Meanwhile, Dawn Robbins (Leslie Parish) is trying to egg on the Penguin, poor deluded creature. The sight gags including the rope to the terrace by the Penguin are a real treat.

This series got off with a fast start on props and gadgets which is almost certainly why the ratings early on for these shows were pretty much top 10. This one is pretty brutal for an early one. As the series keeps going noting the signs on things such as the criminal property room. There is a lot of humor just in the signs.

Fun fun fun, and amazing how quickly the extensive features of the bat cave get used early on in this series. The script is sharp and Meredith is very much on, as he is the entire series whenever he appears.

Partners in plunder
kevinolzak20 May 2016
"The Penguin's a Jinx" begins with Bruce Wayne caught and tied up on a conveyor belt, about to be roasted in a temperance furnace, until he manages to toss his handy cigarette lighter into the flames, causing an explosion that knocks him off his back, enabling him to make his escape (oddly, neither The Penguin nor his henchmen recognize who they assume to be an industrial spy to be millionaire Bruce Wayne). Monocle glued to his face, cigarette holder between tightly clenched teeth, topped by top hat with spats and gloves, Burgess Meredith is an impressive sight, Penguin using Batman's own inquisitiveness against him, making the Caped Crusader an unknowing partner in plunder by adopting whatever crime that Batman assumes he will commit. Unfortunately, when he carries out the kidnapping of gorgeous starlet Dawn Robbins (Leslie Parrish, later seen as Glacia Glaze opposite Eli Wallach's Mister Freeze), a slip of the tongue proves his undoing. Virtually everything is in place with Meredith having a ball with the character, and with The Joker up next, another longtime Hollywood veteran would give voice to another beloved arch villain.

The Best Laid Plans of Bats and Penguins
injury-6544718 June 2020
I really loved this one and I'm not sure exactly why. The whole episode is just delightfully cute. I was laughing a lot. I'm starting to appreciate how cleverly written this show is, despite the silliness and camp aspects.

Highlights for me:
  • Robin and Batman studying the umbrella and coming up with extremely tenuous logic about what the Penguin's plan might be
  • the actress claiming her life is completely boring & falling for Batman
  • the Penguin flying across the skyline on his umbrella zip line
  • the ridiculous umbrella duel
  • hiding in convenient suits of armour (classic)

I can't believe I only just noticed that the titles of the two part episodes rhyme!

Batman - The Penguin's a Jinx
Scarecrow-8819 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
"The Penguin's a Jinx" is the second of the two part Penguin-tricks-Batman-into-helping-him-conduct-a-crime story arc. By using a plan Batman and Robin believe Penguin is concocting himself by listening to the Dynamic Duo through the listening device inside the handle of an umbrella, the "villain of the moment" will infiltrate the penthouse of a movie star, Dawn Robbins (Leslie Parrish), and kidnap her. Using a magnet that defuses Batman and Robin, Penguin is successful but like most villains, he underestimates the heroes. The listening device that helps Penguin could very well come back to haunt him. With "Sparrow" and "Hawkeye" (Walter Burke and Lewis Charles) at his beck and call, Penguin will give Batman all he can handle. The penguin sight gags galore are a real treat, and the Penguin is quite memorable in the performance of Meredith that you can't soon forget him, and again proves that special guest stars as the villains outshine their heroic counterparts.

THE OLD MICROPHONE IN THE UMBRELLA TRICK?
tcchelsey28 May 2023
The Penguin plays a neat game with Batman in this episode, bugging an "evidence" umbrella so he and his gang can listen in on his conversations with Commissioner Gordon. Not a bad stratagy for outsmarting the Dynamic Duo, but didn't Batman or Robin check the evidnece --just in case? Ya think?

This still is campy fun (how can you not like this over the top fluff) as the Penguin goes on to kidnap movie starlet Leslie Parrish (as Dawn). Although Parrish was quite popular on tv, she entered LA politics and came up with the famous anti war slogan, "What If They Gave A War and Nobody Came?" Presidential candidate Bobby Kennedy actually had one of her bumper stickers on his plane. Also look for popular actor Dan Tobin (as Mr. Jay). Tobin played scores of fussy characters and/or wise cracking shifty types, the perfect choice for BATMAN. At the time he was appearing regularly on PERRY MASON. Best gag has to be the Penguin's cuckoo clock with a minitaure qwacking penguin?? See to believe. SEASON 1 restored dvd box set.

The Penguin's a Jinx
Prismark1026 February 2024
It is the roast of Bruce Wayne as the feathered maniac turns on the heat. A cigarette lighter with unlimited butane gas is Wayne's salvation.

Somehow the Penguin becomes bird brained. He does not recognise millionaire Bruce Wayne.

The monocled mutineer continues his crafty plan of having Batman and Robin give him ideas of his next plunder and how to go about doing it.

Someone is going to have a dawn awakening. A bored actress finds out that you can have just too much adventure.

Maybe Batman will realise that he is being bugged and make the penguin flap.

It is all a little slap dash but fun.
