"The Penguin's a Jinx" begins with Bruce Wayne caught and tied up on a conveyor belt, about to be roasted in a temperance furnace, until he manages to toss his handy cigarette lighter into the flames, causing an explosion that knocks him off his back, enabling him to make his escape (oddly, neither The Penguin nor his henchmen recognize who they assume to be an industrial spy to be millionaire Bruce Wayne). Monocle glued to his face, cigarette holder between tightly clenched teeth, topped by top hat with spats and gloves, Burgess Meredith is an impressive sight, Penguin using Batman's own inquisitiveness against him, making the Caped Crusader an unknowing partner in plunder by adopting whatever crime that Batman assumes he will commit. Unfortunately, when he carries out the kidnapping of gorgeous starlet Dawn Robbins (Leslie Parrish, later seen as Glacia Glaze opposite Eli Wallach's Mister Freeze), a slip of the tongue proves his undoing. Virtually everything is in place with Meredith having a ball with the character, and with The Joker up next, another longtime Hollywood veteran would give voice to another beloved arch villain.
