Andy Can't Help Himself
Hitchcoc17 December 2019
When I first saw Jan Shutan, I thought it was Elizabeth Montgomery. When I realized I was wrong it dawned on me. Having seen the original Star Trek episodes so many times, it dawned on me. It's the pretty woman who falls in love with Scotty, but who has something terrible happen to her. I was sort of hoping he'd give the over-reactive, quickly jealous Helen the boot. But she managed to stay on (forever). The episode is sort of sad because Andy is really quite kind and sensitive. His voice on the guitar piece is really pretty.

What did Andy do wrong?
terrijlee12 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I've always been confused how in the beginning, Aunt Bea kept telling Andy to be nice to Gloria and help keep her spirits up. And Helen telling him not to be so disagreeable (grumpy) about it

Then they both get angry with him for being too nice.

I just never understood it.

Just stay indoors for a few weeks Andy !
ronnybee211215 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Andy catches hell from all angles while trying to keep a rudely jealous Helen from causing problems between a (very pretty) visiting family friend and Andy, herself, and the ever-worrisome Aunt Bea.

Kind of lame, why not just stay in,stay home, and let the women fight all they want about whatever? Some of the pointless problems on this show get to be a bit much and this is a great example. One of the bottom 10 episodes.

Answering mpotter's question.
grnwltr-1121226 October 2022
I believe that the song playing in the background of the diner scene is an instrumental version of "All of Me", written in 1931 by Gerald Marks and Seymour Simons. It was recorded in 1931 by Ruth Etting and was also recorded four different times by Frank Sinatra. The song is considered so significant that in 2000 "All of Me" was presented with the Towering Song Award by the Songwriter's Hall of Fame. Many versions of this song were performed. This instrumental version may be the composition recorded by Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra. Goober being Goober, his dancing is a counterpoint to the actual tempo of the song.

Jan Shutan made this Episode
megamegamania31 March 2023
Personally I think that Jan Shutan's appearance on the show was very well done. The Helen character was uncharacteristically unreasonable. The Helen character seemed out of date for her development, as this type of performance seems suited for Season One rather than Season Five. The episode did, in my opinion, seem older than the series progression.. After watching, I am amazed that Shutan did not become a bigger name in the business. She seemed to have that spaghetti western appeal. She had a wonderful smile. This is the first episode where Don notts is missing except for the brief mention within the second scene. All in all another wonderful episode of a truly classic TV Series.

Say hello to the jealous green eyed monster
mloessel21 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
In this episode a close friend of the Taylor family, Gloria (Jan Shutan), breaks up with her boyfriend and decides to visit the Taylors to breathe some emotional 'fresh air'. Aunt Bea asks Andy not to bring up the relationship during her visit. Unfortunately, Aunt Bea wastes little time in offering comfort to Gloria when she welcomes her. And Gloria doesn't help when she innocently flirts with Andy in the courthouse to the dismay of Helen.

The writers chose to give Helen (Aneta Corsaut) a streak of jealousy that was rather annoying but necessary. And of all the lovely ladies Andy either courted or flirted with the writer's stayed with Crump who couldn't cook and was quick to anger. However, Andy Griffith remains one of my favorite series because of characters like Helen. A little bit of jealously goes a long way and adds some spice to the soup.

Speaking of jealousy, I especially liked the episodes with the "The Fun Girls". The two ladies, from Mt Pilot, were high spirited and went ga ga over Taylor and Deputy Fife. When the "The Fun Girls were caught in the arms of Sheriff and Deputy and Fife it caused Helen and Thelma Lou to get their feathers ruffled and feel threatened. Gloria, on the other hand, is visiting the Taylor house following a break with her boyfriend and becomes an innocent bystander who enjoys the attention Taylor gives her in an attempt to make her feel welcomed. All Helen sees is how pretty she is and the attention Taylor gives her.

Helen struggles with self-esteem issues and Gloria appreciates the attention Taylor offers. That attention is enough to stir Helen. We see Helen behaving like a jealous lover and Taylor not liking it. I liked how the jealous green-eyed monster raised its ugly head.

Nope

This is quite possibly my least favorite of the first five seasons, very little if any humor. Helen is such a bad character for this show, nothing about her is entertaining.

Huge misfire in a stellar season
vitoscotti24 June 2022
Very odd, and uncomfortable episode. Andy is imposed apon. Helen looks bonkers. Lovely Gloria (Jan Shutan) uses poor judgement getting too close to Andy. The premise of an unrelated beautiful young lady living at Andy's home to get away from a broken relationship is totally ridiculous. The Taylors barely even know her. She didn't have a girlfriend or a female relative she could stay with or go on a trip with?

The script was so flimsy Helen (Aneta Corsaut) was made over-the-top jealous to give the story some depth. Without that there'd be not much story. Goober added some humor. But even his character was made a creepy tightwad.

Really a dud episode. Goobers dancing, Andy's singing, crew member coughing when Andy asks for more coffee at the dinner table livened things up a little. Silly, flat epilogue where Andy drags Frank to town. Season 5 has so many classic episodes. This stinker sticks out like a sore thumb.

Grumpy Crump

As mentioned in other reviews, this episode was a boring 'lesson' of jealousy. That was how relationships were in the 60s and 70s when another lady entered into the picture, no pun intended.
