Plot: Eddie Murphy stars in this holiday comedy adventure about a man on a mission to win his neighborhood’s annual Christmas home decoration contest. After Chris inadvertently makes a deal with a mischievous elf named Pepper to better his chances of winning, she casts a magic spell that brings the 12 Days of Christmas to life, and wreaks havoc on the whole town. At the risk of ruining the holidays for his family, Chris, his wife Carol, and their three children must race against the clock to break Pepper’s spell, battle deviously magical characters, and save Christmas for everyone.
Review: Eddie Murphy’s career has changed dramatically over the decades. Once the most popular comedian and actor in Hollywood, Murphy’s focus shifted from edgy and mature comedies to more family-friendly fare in the late 1990s. With some recent turns invigorating his dramatic chops, Murphy has proven he still...

Burt Young, a former boxer who was in Sylvester Stallone’s corner as his brother-in-law Paulie in the six Rocky films and received a supporting actor Oscar nomination for his turn in the original, has died. He was 83.
He died on Oct. 8 in Los Angeles, his daughter, Anne Morea Steingieser, told The New York Times Wednesday.
A tough guy in real life who usually played tough guys onscreen, Young portrayed a rotten client of gumshoe Jack Nicholson’s in Chinatown (1974), was mobster “Bed Bug” Eddie in The Pope of Greenwich Village (1984) and played Rodney Dangerfield’s protector/chauffeur Lou in Back to School (1986).
Young also appeared in four movies in four straight years with fellow Queens guy James Caan — Cinderella Liberty (1973), The Gambler (1974), The Killer Elite (1975) and Harry and Walter Go to New York (1976) — before they worked together again in Mickey Blue Eyes (1999).

In movies, the word “bomb” has always meant two things, generally at the same time. The first and most important definition of bomb is that a movie has lost a disastrous amount of money. Movies, in general, can’t afford to do that — they’re too expensive to produce. Bombs happen, but as a business model they’re not sustainable. A movie that bombs commercially has never been something to write off as a trivial matter.
The second definition of bomb, which is linked to the first (though not automatically), is that a film is spectacularly bad. It is, of course, not axiomatic that a movie that bombs commercially has failed as a work of art. There are movies we think of as classics that crashed and burned at the box office — like “It’s a Wonderful Life” or “Blade Runner” or “Intolerance” or “The Long Goodbye.” It’s become almost...

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
The term box office bomb is thrown around quite a bit. At times, it is very well warranted. We've seen a couple of examples in 2022, such as "The Northman," an ambitious 90 million Viking movie from Robert Eggers that (very regrettably) only earned 68.7 million at the global box office. A bomb, to be sure. But sometimes, the term is used to describe something that is more of a disappointment as opposed to a bomb. Think of something like "Eternals" making just over 400 million against a 200 million budget. Undoubtedly a bummer by Marvel standards, but by no means a bomb.
I say all this to help paint a picture of the way movies are often described in relation to their commercial performance. But are...

Damon Wayans (Fox’s Lethal Weapon) and Pam Grier (Jackie Brown) have signed on to star alongside Hailey Kilgore, David Iacono and Jeremie Harris in the noir thriller Cinnamon, which will debut exclusively on Fox’s free streaming service, Tubi, later this year.
The film currently in production in Atlanta follows a struggling small-town gas station attendant and aspiring singer, Jodi Jackson (Kilgore), whose life is sent into a tailspin when there’s a robbery at work. As previously announced, Iacono is playing Jodi’s fiercely devoted hustler boyfriend turned music manager, Eddie, with Harris as James Walker, a young gangster in the drug running business.
Grier will play Mama, the undisputed head of her family’s criminal organization, whose son James executes her wishes. Wayans will portray Wally, the owner of the convenience store that gets robbed. He’s a businessman who also owns a used car lot that...

The Golden Raspberry Awards, otherwise known as the Razzies, honor the worst films and performances of the year. While the Razzies are not considered a major industry event, they are apparently major enough to get a comedy legend like Eddie Murphy to stop acting for several years. During a recent appearance on Marc Maron’s “Wtf” podcast (via The Independent), Murphy revealed he stepped away from acting after a string of critically reviled movies made him a Razzie darling.
“I was making shitty movies,” Murphy said. “I was like, ‘This shit ain’t fun. They’re giving me Razzies…Motherfuckers gave me the ‘worst actor ever’ Razzie. [So I thought], ‘Maybe it’s time to take a break.’”
Murphy is a nine-time Razzie Award nominee and three-time winner thanks to performances in films such as “Norbit,” “The Adventures of Pluto Nash,” and “Meet Dave.” At the 2010 Razzie Award ceremony, Murphy was given a...

Thirty-five years after leaving “Saturday Night Live,” Eddie Murphy finally returned to host the show for the first time last December. A cast member from 1980-84, Murphy is largely credited with single-handedly keeping the NBC sketch show alive through that period. His time there earned him three out of his four previous Emmy nominations (the fourth was for his stop-motion animated series “The PJs”), and it’s little surprise that his long-awaited hosting gig nabbed him a fifth bid, this time in Best Comedy Guest Actor.
Murphy opens the show with a monologue about how much he’s changed since he left the show, joined by fellow African-American “SNL” alums Tracy Morgan and Chris Rock, as well as reclusive comedy superstar Dave Chappelle and current cast member Kenan Thompson. His sketches are predominately revivals of his most famous “SNL” characters, including Mr. Robinsons’s Neighborhood, Buckwheat (who apparently survived his...

I think at this point we can all agree that Tom Hooper's adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's stage musical, Cats, will go down as one of the biggest, most ridiculed flops of all time. Edde Murphy made good at the Razzies. After making a number of critically derided films over the years, the comedian won the Redeemer Award for his career turnaround performance in Netflix’s “Dolemite is My Name.” He overtook four other nominees who redeemed their past cinematic sins last year: Jennifer Lopez (“Hustlers”), Keanu Reeves (“John Wick 3″ and Toy Story 4”), Will Smith (“Aladdin”) and Adam Sandler (“Uncut Gems”). Check out the complete list of Razzie winners here.

Murphy starred in “Dolemite” as Rudy Ray Moore, a real-life comedian whose “Dolemite” blaxploitation films made him a cult figure and an inspiration to future performers. The role earned Murphy acclaim from critics, who called his turn “irrepressibly alive” and a “killer comeback.” He earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Film Comedy/Musical Actor and a Critics’ Choice bid for Best Actor. But he missed the cut at the Oscars.

Even though Disney is currently the king of the box office, they aren’t immune from a big misfire. With a $130 million budget and a $20 million opening “Nutcracker and the Four Realms” is shaping up to be one of 2018’s biggest bombs. But will it be as infamous as some of these all-time flops?
“Ishtar” (1987) — With reports of a rocky production and a budget that got way out of hand, critics and the Hollywood trades savaged Elaine May’s adventure comedy as it collapsed to just $14 million made. For years, it was considered one of the worst films ever made, but is now considered by some to be a stealth success.
“47 Ronin” (2013) — Though Keanu Reeves was on his game in the action scenes, this Japanese fantasy was panned for its story and cost Universal big as it failed to make back its $175 million budget.

Martin Bregman, a talent manager and film producer whose credits include classic like “Scarface,” “Serpico,” and “Dog Day Afternoon”, died Saturday of a cerebral hemorrhage. He was 92. NBC 4 first reported the news.
Born in New York City in 1926, Bregman entered the entertainment industry first as a nightclub agent before moving into personal management. As a manager, his clients would eventually include at various times luminaries like Alan Alda, Woody Allen, and Barbra Streisand among others.
Bregman’s greatest impact on Hollywood was the result of his relationship with Al Pacino. Bregman discovered Pacino performing in an Off Broadway play in the 1960s, and became his manager. He helped Pacino land his first starring film role in the 1971 drama “The Panic in Needle Park.” It was that role which brought Pacino to the attention of Francis Ford Coppola, leading to Pacino’s breakthrough as Michael Corleone in “The Godfather.”

Over the past couple months, the standalone Han Solo Star Wars spinoff has gone through a lot of drama. Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were ejected from the director’s chair, and in their place, Lucasfilm placed the season veteran Ron Howard. The film still looks to make its May 2018 release date, but there’s no doubt that Howard has his work cut out for him.
Though while they’ve hit a massive speed bump, the production trudges forward, and according to The Star Wars Show, the Han Solo film has locked down their composer. Putting together the dulcet tones for the film is John Powell. He may be no Michael Giacchino or John Williams as far as recognition, but he’s done plenty of quality music.

In an interview with Bloomberg Wednesday, Brian Grazer announced he's developing a Neflix film for Eddie Murphy. Grazer described the film as if he were speaking to Cahiers du Cinéma, calling it "a tour de force movie that’s cinéma vérité with Eddie Murphy being as raw as he can be." As cinéma vérité is a style of documentary filmmaking that relies heavily on improvisation to highlight its subjects, we can probably expect a return to Murphy's '80s comedy roots — as seen in his 1987 stand-up film Raw — and less of the stark Method acting of The Adventures of Pluto Nash.

Zac Efron's "We Are Your Friends" was unfriended by most of the country this weekend. The Edm movie, co-starring Wes Bentley and Emily Ratajkowski, was released on 2,333 screens but only made $1.8 million. That's not just short of the $8 million projection, it's also the worst wide-release launch of Efron's career and one of the worst openings of any studio film ever.
Entertainment Weekly culled the list of the top 10 worst wide-release movies ever, and "We Are Your Friends" ended up at No. 3, just behind "Delgo" and "Oogieloves In The Big Balloon Adventure." This movie actually did worse than the much-mocked "The Adventures of Pluto Nash" and marks Wes Bentley's second time on the list, since he was also in the horror movie "P2."
According to Variety, Warner Bros. only spent $2 million to acquire "We Are Your Friends." Warner Bros. distribution executive vice president Jeff Goldstein commented on the opening: "We're disappointed,...

Despite his chiseled chest and absurd abs and bionic biceps and generally jocular demeanor, Zac Efron didn't make many friends at the box office this weekend, as We Are Your Friends, also known as the Zac Efron DJ Movie, had the fourth-worst wide release opening in history. It made a piddling $1.8 million, which is worse than Eddie Murphy's notorious flop The Adventures of Pluto Nash. Maybe We Are Your Friends should go eat a can of worms. Meanwhile, Minions, a movie about little yellow creatures that babble unintelligibly, crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide. Straight Outta Compton took the top spot for the third straight week, making $13.2 million for a $134.1 million cume. The War Room [insert Dr. Strangelove joke here] came in second, making $11 million. Tom Cruise keeps clinging to the top five as Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation made another $8.3 million for a $170.3 million...

A classic rags-to-riches story, Rosario Dawson began her career penniless, with no hopes of ever being an actor. Basically homeless, she was discovered on the streets and cast in her first film at the age of 15. She enjoyed the experience so much that she used her pay to take acting classes, and that’s how she ended up playing Night Nurse in Daredevil.
Her accomplishments sound a little less impressive when you put it like that, but Dawson’s performance as Claire Temple in Netflix’s first Marvel series was one of the highlights of that show.
It was just the latest in a long line of great, complex and diverse roles she’s played over the years, starring in everything from Oliver Stone’s ill-fated Alexander to Rent.

Andy and Lana Wachowski have frequently reached for the stars with their ambitious blockbusters, but in their latest offering Jupiter Ascending it all slips through their fingers in spectacularly disastrous fashion.
Though this isn't a science fiction folly quite as bad as Battlefield Earth or The Adventures of Pluto Nash, it's still rammed with an incomprehensible plot, off-key performances and a script that blurts out lines as ridiculous as "bees are genetically engineered to recognise royalty".
Queen of said bees is Mila Kunis's Jupiter Jones, a cleaner from a poor immigrant family who discovers she's the exact genetic replica of alien royalty. The ability to manipulate swarms of those pesky insects appears to be her sole (and limited) superpower.

When Johnny Depp‘s mustache comedy “Mortdecai” brought in less than $5 million on opening weekend, it marked the A-list actor’s fifth straight box office bomb. But he’s far from the only top billed actor to endure a tanker or two.

As of the time of this writing, the Saw re-release has ranked in as the third worst wide opening at the box office. This is according to Box Office Mojo's records, which reach as far back as 1982. To put this into perspective, a "very wide" release is one that opens in more than 2,000 theaters. So out of the worst 200 films to have opened in the past 32 years, with as wide of an audience as can be expected for a major motion picture, Saw's tenth anniversary re-release opened worse than such films as The Real Cancun, Bandslam, and The Adventures Of Pluto Nash. Who would have thought that a franchise that used to be the toast of the October film market would bring in such a telling sign about the state of its ultimate legacy ten years on. With the Saw franchise producers eager to bring new life to their monster...

We’ve reviewed every summer movie season since 1980 to find out which are the best, and which are the worst. Last week we posted our picks for the worst, and here we post our picks for the best.
2015 and 2016 may just be the most overthetop summer movie seasons yet. It seems like nearly every movie slated for a summer 2015 or 2016 release is heavily anticipated. Because of these impending summers of movie awesomeness, we’ve decided to take a look back at summer movie seasons of years past. The idea of the summer movie season is currently in full swing, but it didn’t catch on immediately. Hollywood had to do its fair share of experimenting to determine what types of films would be most successful. As a result, some summer movie seasons have been better than others. We’ve reviewed them all for you and ranked them from worst to best.

The trial against Alec Baldwin's alleged stalker Genevieve Sabourin is underway, with the former "30 Rock" star taking the stand to testify on Tuesday (Nov. 12).
Baldwin testified that he'd never had a sexual or romantic relationship with the French-Canadian actress, telling the court that, after they met, she'd begun leaving dozens of voicemails for him at night, which soon began to include threats to show up at his homes, the AP reports.
The new MSNBC host says that he had a meal with Sabourin at a friend's request, where he provided her with an email address and phone number, which led to later communication about acting classes. From there, Baldwin says, she began to inundate him with as many as 30 voicemails a night and hundreds of emails that started out as "lovelorn and pleadings." However, they quickly escalated into threats to insinuate herself into his now-wife Hilaria Thomas' yoga class.

Film starring Johnny Depp opens in Britain this weekend as losses could reach $200m after scathing reviews
It was billed as one of the summer's biggest blockbusters, reuniting Johnny Depp – as Tonto in The Lone Ranger – with the team behind the huge success of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
But Walt Disney has now warned that the film could instead go down as one of the year's biggest flops, predicting losses of almost $200m.
The Lone Ranger, which opens in Britain this weekend, stars Armie Hammer as the masked Texas lawman and Depp as his Comanche spirit guide. Budgeted at $225m, the film, directed by Gore Verbinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, suffered a tortuous production process and met with largely scathing reviews on its release in the Us.
Concerns over the odds of recouping the investment were reportedly voiced during production, and the shoot halted for several months...

Brad Pitt's star power helps his new film avoid disaster. So what does it take to make a genuine modern mega-flop?
You can almost taste the disappointment in the air: World War Z turned out all right, after all. "Advanced word said [it] was the walking dead. This was the giant zombie turkey, come screeching from the shadows to tear the careers of director Marc Forster and producer/star Brad Pitt to shreds," wrote Henry Barnes in this paper, before admitting the film to be "a punchy, if conventional action thriller".
As anyone who understands the ecosphere of Hollywood will know, this was most ungentlemanly of Pitt, the only thing keeping the press alive during the wall-to-wall marketing jamboree of the summer being the slim hope that one film will mount the diving board and execute a perfect triple summersault and twist, before going splat on to the concrete. With bear-baiting now illegal,...

Take a quick glance across the movie release schedule for 2013 and one thing quickly becomes clear: sci-fi movies are very much back in vogue. We're talking big-spectacle blockbusters with big superstars and even bigger budgets.
Oblivion opened in cinemas earlier this week, while Star Trek Into Darkness, After Earth and Elysium are all on the horizon for this year.
But what happens when sci-fi movies go wrong? Hollywood history is littered with epic genre failures - movies that fell short either creatively or financially. For every Avatar there's a John Carter, every Blade Runner a Soldier... and then there's The Adventures of Pluto Nash.
Digital Spy takes a look at 20 science fiction movies that were bad news for all involved (including, in some cases, the audience).

Perception is pretty much everything when it comes to films, and our verdict on the quality of a movie is usually just an intellectual alignment often dictated by its box office success, or failure.
However, some of the biggest box office hits in history are also some of the most awful movies ever made. Transformers: Dark Of The Moon, anyone? And let’s face it, whilst Skyfall’s box office peformance has earned it the title “Best Bond movie ever,” it isn’t a patch on From Russia With Love, or Live And Let Die.
I find the stories surrounding Hollywood turkeys far more compelling than those of financial triumph. The making of notorious flops such as Cutthroat Island, Glitter and The Adventures Of Pluto Nash are ripping yarns that describe hubris and out of control ego and are usually more entertaining than the film itself.

Readers answer other readers' questions on subjects ranging from trivial flights of fancy to profound scientific concepts
What is the most critically acclaimed film that was a box-office disaster on release?
The Fall of the Roman Empire, directed by Anthony Mann in 1964, is frequently cited as being the most intelligently written, the most strongly cast, and most capably acted of all the movies in the sword-and-sandal genre that was so fashionable in Hollywood in the 1960s. Yet it lost a then-record $14.25m at the box office, at a time when studios were not able to recoup some of those losses by video or DVD sales.
Since 1964, and allowing for inflation, only a dozen films have lost more money, and given that they include such turkeys as Heaven's Gate and The Adventures of Pluto Nash, it is safe to say that none of them are in the same league as Mann's...

“My reputation was destroyed and my self-esteem eroded,” Geneviève Sabourin tells Huffington Post Québec as she kicks off a media blitz.
The 40-year-old actress from Quebec was arrested April 8th in front of American actor Alec Baldwin’s luxurious home in New York. She now faces five charges, including two for aggravated harassment. Sabourin met the '30 Rock' star about ten years ago on the set of 'The Adventures of Pluto Nash,' where she worked as a publicist.
Sabourin asserts she then begun a romantic relationship with Baldwin. In the indictment filed after her arrest last spring, U.S. prosecutors claim that Sabourin sent a series of emails to the actor, begging him to marry her. After a failed attempt to settle the case out of court, she will stand trial starting November 27th.

The woman accused of stalking Alec Baldwin may face trial due to a new ruling in her case. Canadian actress Genevieve Sabourin was arrested outside Baldwin's New York City apartment in April, after allegedly previously sending him harassing emails and coming uninvited to his Hamptons home. Sabourin later claimed that she had a friendship with the 30 Rock star dating back to their work together on the film The Adventures of Pluto Nash. A lawyer for Sabourin filed paperwork in July for a stalking charge to be dismissed, but a Us judge has now formally denied (more)...

August can be a rough month for movie fans. With every major summer blockbuster already out in theaters, studios look to shove out whatever bottom-of-the-barrel project they have laying around the office. Needless to say, this month has seen its fair share of box-office bombs, from "Gigli," the infamous 2003 flick starring Ben Affleck and J-Lo, to "The Adventures of Pluto Nash," the outer space comedy with Eddie Murphy. So to celebrate (and complain about) the end of summer, let's take a look at the biggest box-office bombs in the month of August. Earlier: The 2012 Summer Movie Travel Guide...

To have one giant money-losing tentpole is unfortunate. To have two starts to look careless, and that's what's happened to Taylor Kitsch. The actor, who broke out on TV's "Friday Night Lights," was seen as Hollywood's next great hope, picked out to star in two great big blockbusters with a combined cost of half-a-billion dollars. But when "John Carter" arrived in March, the film wildly underperformed, with Disney taking a hit of at least $100 million on the project. And after this weekend, it looks that his other film, "Battleship," is going to lose similar amounts.
The film, Universal & Hasbro's adaptation of the board game, directed by "Hancock" helmer Peter Berg, had taken the unusual step of opening everywhere else in the world six weeks ahead of the U.S, in the hope of bagging lucrative foreign coin and building buzz for the U.S. release. New York — A Canadian actress accused of stalking Alec Baldwin was upbeat Monday about the case as her lawyer said she had a legitimate reason for contacting the star.
"I'm confident that my lawyers are going to solve this," Genevieve Sabourin said after a brief, procedural appearance in a Manhattan court.
Baldwin, 54, and Sabourin, 40, met on the set of the 2002 sci-fi comedy "The Adventures of Pluto Nash," in which he had a cameo and she was a publicist. Baldwin told authorities they had dinner together in the fall of 2010.
Sabourin was arrested last month after authorities said she sent the "30 Rock" star a series of emails imploring him to see and to marry her – emails allegedly sent days after Baldwin became engaged to yoga instructor Hilaria Thomas.
