Steven Spielberg is no stranger to tackling dark material like Schindler’s List and War of the Worlds. But when it came to this Denzel Washington feature, he just wasn’t in the right place in life to helm the project.

The world could’ve seen a rare collaboration between Washington and Spielberg with The Little Things. The film came out in 2021, and saw Washington playing a detective hunting a serial killer in the 90s. The project ended up being directed by John Lee Hancock, but the film initially arrived on Spielberg’s desk.
The film’s script had been floating around for years. According to Hancock, by the time the story found its way to Spielberg, he had his fill of dark material.

Denzel Washington starred in a variety of films that pushed him to his physical limit. But there was one movie he remembered needing to seek medical help for.
Denzel Washington’s directorial debut left him feeling literally numb Denzel Washington | John Lamparski/WireImage
As excited as Washington was to make his directorial debut, he was also equally nervous. He signed on to direct his first film, the 2002 biographical drama Antwone Fisher. What he wasn’t expecting was the extreme lack of sleep he’d experience doing the project.
“It was the most frightening thing I’ve ever done in my life,” Washington once said according to Black Film. “I was so scared. It was like once I got going, I was fine. But when I talked to other directors I was like, ‘Do you get sleep when you’re directing? Cause I didn’t get any.’ They said, no that never goes away you.

Actor Denzel Washington made a career for himself as one of Hollywood’s most popular and consistent leading men. But despite his accomplishments, there came a point where Washington considered walking away from acting for good.

Washington’s filmography is full of memorable and lauded material. A few of them have even been nominated and won Oscars. But over time, the actor started becoming disillusioned with his career. Not because he wasn’t being offered work, but because he wasn’t interested in the work he was being offered.
“A couple of years ago I was really bored and I was getting some great roles but just thought I can’t do this anymore,” Washington once told Movie Hole.

Derek Luke always knew he wanted to be a hero — or rather, play one. But when the opportunity for him to join the Marvel universe arose in 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger,” he wasn’t so sure — even after his agent, the late Ed Limato, insisted.
“If he sent me something, he would say, ‘Do you like it? Alright we’ll get him next time, kiddo, no pressure,’” Luke says. “This was the only script that he said, ‘You need to do this. And I’m like, ‘No. Absolutely not. First of all, Marvel, like, what is that?’”
Limato was firm, so Luke took a meeting with Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige. Upon entering his office, Luke’s eyes were drawn to a section of the wall full of Black characters, ones he didn’t even know existed. Luke leaned in and took the role.

All you need to do to understand the animating injustice of Viola Davis's career is scan through her Wikipedia biography, and note the puzzling dynamic of going from Tony-winning leads on Broadway in the late 1990s and early 2000s to, at best, supporting turns in studio movies. How was this Juilliard-trained dynamo who routinely set New York City stages ablaze getting relegated to undernourished roles in films starring actors she could dust straight off the screen?
If you're at all aware of how things work in the United States of America, you know the answer. Davis certainly does, and she shouted it from the mountaintop at a Woman in the World event in 2018:
"I have a career that's probably comparable to Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, Sigourney Weaver. They all came out of Yale; they came out of Julliard; they came out of NYU. They had the same path as me.

Denzel Washington never saw a production of “Macbeth” in high school or college. So when he was offered the titular role in Shakespeare’s great tragedy, which he’d only read in the past two years, he wanted to make sure that he could wrap his head around how director Joel Coen would shoot the film with him and Frances McDormand as Lady Macbeth. “Let’s talk about the black and white of it all,” Washington recalls saying to Coen in an early conversation.
Coen began to respond, “Well, you’re Black …” before Washington stopped him. “No, no, no,” he interrupted. “I’m talking about you shooting in black and white!”
Washington laughs as he retells the story on a recent November afternoon during a conversation with Variety about his career as one of the most enduring movie stars of modern times. “So that’s where my head was at,...

Michael B. Jordan is preparing to make his directorial debut with “Creed III,” the latest chapter in Adonis Creed’s saga, which is set to hit theaters Thanksgiving 2022.
When news broke that Jordan would take the helm of the franchise, in addition to starring as the boxing champ, the first-time feature filmmaker released a statement explaining why he wanted to take on the challenge.
“Directing has always been an aspiration, but the timing had to be right,” Jordan stated. “‘Creed III’ is that moment — a time in my life where I’ve grown more sure of who I am, holding agency in my own story, maturing personally, growing professionally and learning from the Greats like Ryan Coogler, most recently Denzel Washington, and other top tier directors I respect. All of which sets the table for this moment.”

In a year-end movie landscape marked, on the one hand, by a stream of prestige adult dramas that struggle more than ever to find actual adults to see them, and on the other hand by the kind of oversize fantasy event films whose job it now is to keep the industry alive, “A Journal for Jordan” feels like an odd movie out more than it might have, say, 20 years ago. Back in the 1980s, it would have been right down the middle of the plate. Today, it seems like a film out of time. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Derek Luke will star in “Rare Objects,” reuniting with Katie Holmes nearly two decades after the pair appeared together in 2003’s “Pieces of April.”

Luke will also appear in another (still-untitled) film directed by Holmes alongside Jim Sturgess and Melissa Leo.

Over the course of his long career, Denzel Washington has directed five separate projects. Four of them are films, such as “Antwone Fisher,” “The Great Debaters,” “Fences,” and “A Journal For Jordan,” but the other project is something many people don’t realize he did—an episode of “Grey’s Anatomy.” And it appears that Washington’s time on the ABC drama series wasn’t as smooth sailing as you might expect, as he had a pretty big blowout with lead actress, Ellen Pompeo.

Denzel Washington’s directorial career includes Oscar winner “Fences” and box office hits like “Antwone Fisher.” Some fans might not realize that it also includes a 2016 episode of the ABC medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy,” which remains the only television Washington has directed in his career. Washington directed the 12th season episode “The Sound of Silence.” On her podcast, “Tell Me with Ellen Pompeo,” the “Grey’s” lead actress was joined by former co-star Patrick Dempsey and revealed a fight occurred on set between Washington and herself after she went off-script in a scene.
“I was like, ‘Look at me when you apologize. Look at me.’ And that wasn’t in the dialogue,” Pompeo told Dempsey. “And Denzel went ham on my ass. He was like, ‘I’m the director. Don’t you tell him what to do. I was like, ‘Listen, motherfucker, this is my show. This is my set.

Chicago – Building a career role by role, Viola Davis has emerged at the top of her profession as an actress, with four Oscar nominations in her journey – and one win for “Fences” (2016) – including this 2021’s nod for her shape shifting performance as a real-life 1920s Blues Singer in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”
Davis portrays the title character, recording a new record on the Southside of Chicago during the era. Her Ma Rainey lives in a segregated society, and in this adaptation of the August Wilson stageplay the singer is exploited by white record producers, and is lost, angry and burnt out. Davis is able to convey all of those emotions is a remarkable portrayal, embodying both the physical form and spirit of an old-timey entertainer who had to contend with both business humiliations and societal dismissal.

Hollywood monster movie “Godzilla vs. Kong’ and Korean historical drama “Book of Fish” each made a claim to be the top film at the Korean box office. But neither could prevent weekend revenues from slumping.
“Fish,” which depicts the encounter between an early 19th century scholar who learns about nature and biodiversity and a peasant fisherman who aspires to better himself, sold the more tickets over the weekend and thus appears top in Korean charts.
“Fish” was directed by Lee Joon-ik, who has previously enjoyed a spectacular run of hit films including: “The King and The Clown,” “Sunny,” “The Throne” and “Dongju: Portrait of a Poet.”
“Godzilla” had higher ticket prices and marginally higher gross revenues. For the second weekend retained its claim to be the highest grossing film in the country. It earned $472,000, giving a cumulative total of $5.58 million since March 25, according to data from the Korean Film Council’s Kobis tracking service.

The deal covers Flying Fish’s upcoming slate, including the sequel to 2019 box office hit Fisherman’s Friends, which is in pre-production; and the recently announced untitled biopic on the life of the late Tom Moore, the former British Army officer who became a charity fundraiser during the pandemic.

“It started at a lunch in 1989,” recalls producer Todd Black of his long standing collaboration with Denzel Washington. Back then, Black had just seen “Glory” and was eager to work with the actor. “When you read something that keeps you up at night… call me,” said Washington, “but don’t call me before then.” That project was “Antwone Fisher,” and the pair has kept their “very fruitful, very trusting” relationship going strong. After earning an Oscar nomination for Best Picture with “Fences,” Black is once again producing an August Wilson drama with Washington. This time it’s the music driven “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Washington’s plan to bring the entirety of Wilson’s ten-play “Century Cycle” to the screen first found a home with HBO, before the deal moved to Netflix. Black admits that with the rise of streaming “we all have to prepare ourselves now,...

Our long national nightmare is finally over: “The Amazing Race” is back! Season 32 premiered Wednesday — 16 months after Season 31 ended. If you think that’s long, imagine how the cast feels because Season 32 filmed in November and December 2018 (not a typo).
Unlike last season’s reality showdown, Season 32 features a cast of newbies, but there are some notable folks, including former Carolina Panthers teammates DeAngelo Williams and Gary Barnidge, and Olympic hurdlers Kellie Brinkley and Lavonne Idlette.
Phil Keoghan also described the season to us last year as “back to basics,” so don’t expect a bunch of twists or bells and whistles. “Everybody always says, ‘What’s new and different?’ But at the end of the day, fans like the fact that there are certain things they can expect from the show and they want to see those things again and again. And there’s nothing wrong with that,” he said.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Sunday’s Yellowstone. If you’d prefer to watch first, read later, giddy-up… up and away.
All together now, Yellowstone fans: Oh, Jamie. On what could only have been what, his second day on the job as Livestock Commissioner, the series’ resident Meg Griffin so completely and totally botched it that he wound up bringing about a double murder. “How?” you ask. “How on Earth?” Read on, and I’ll do my best to explain without rattling my brain from shaking my head so hard.

Javier Bardem is a deeply expressive actor — we’ve seen him move audiences without saying a word. Sally Potter is an artist who has used dance, music, video and film (Orlando, Yes) with a forceful experimental fervor. Sadly, the first collaboration between these two in The Roads Not Taken stubbornly refuses to come to life. For the filmmaker, the project is clearly personal. The image of Bardem as Leo, an author lying near comatose in bed in his drab Brooklyn apartment, evokes the same kind of early-onset dementia that afflicted Potter’s younger brother Nic,...
