With its list of new releases for May 2023, Amazon Prime Video is increasing its global reach.
The streamer’s biggest original offering this month is a German series. Hohlbeins’ – The Gryphon, based on the works of Wolfgang Holhlbein, will present a sprawling fantasy tale about three teens discovering a fantastical world called The Black Tower where “the Gryphon, a world-devouring monster, mercilessly subjugates all living creatures.”
The only other original title of note in May is Freevee comedy Primo on the 19th. Written by author and journalist Shea Serrano and produced by Michael Schur (The Good Place), this coming-of-age series will follow a teenager balancing “college aspirations, societal expectations, and a hectic home life on the south side of San Antonio.”

You People. (L to R) Jonah Hill (Writer-Producer) as Ezra and Eddie Murphy as Akbar in You People. Cr. Tyler Adams/Netflix © 2023.
For those of us who grew up with comedian and actor Eddie Murphy, our first exposure to this gifted entertainer was on Saturday Night Live’s “Mister Robinson’s Neighborhood“.
For decades now, Murphy has always been there, whether on TV or in the movies, and continues to have loyal, diehard fans who grew up in the 80’s to his hilarious standups “Delirious” and “Raw”, as well as his pop single “Party All The Time”.
Personally, while my siblings and I were in high school, after moving cross country from Connecticut to Idaho, Murphy saved us as we listened repeatedly to the cassette of Delirious in 1984. He had us laughing and made us forget our feelings of being the “new kids” in a new town at a new school.

Summer is about to finally, blessedly be in full swing. And to honor the occasion, Hulu is showing up big with its list of new releases for June 2022.
Hulu is bringing two major TV titles to its stream this month. The first is The Orville: New Horizons on June 2. Seth MacFarlane’s sci-fi/comedy started as a simple Star Trek parody on Fox before blossoming into its own entirely sincere space adventuring beast. Now “New Horizons” promises to be a fresh start for the series on Hulu. Next up is Only Murders in the Building season 2 on June 28. Season 1 of this Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez-starring series was a big hit. Let’s see if our favorite podcasters can pull it off once again.

How old is Tyler Perry’s spitfire matron Madea? Her age isn’t specified (I’d say she’s in her mid-70s), but whatever it is she’s that many years young. She has a sneaky-dog irascibility that won’t quit. And Tyler Perry can’t quit her. He had hinted that “A Madea Family Funeral,” in 2019, might be the last Madea outing. But the pandemic changed his mind. I say that with or without it, Perry would have returned to Madea, because she’s more than his greatest hit — she’s his unleashed id, the character he’s addicted to playing because she expresses so many of his angels and demons.
Of course, she’s also an eternal crowd-pleaser. The first Tyler Perry movie, “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” (which included an appearance by Madea), was released 17 years ago today. At the time, he’d already been doing Madea onstage for years.

Jerry Lewis’ comedy “The Nutty Professor” is getting a reboot from the production company behind “Scream 5.”
Project X principals James Vanderbilt, William Sherak and Paul Neinstein have bought the rights to the 1963 movie, which was remade in 1996 starring Eddie Murphy. No director or actors are attached to the remake yet.
Lewis portrayed a nerdy college professor who concocted a potion that transformed him into a suave hipster named Buddy Love, who pursues one of his students, played by Stella Stevens. Lewis directed from a script he co-wrote with Bill Richmond, as a parody of Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novella “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.”
Film historians regard “The Nutty Professor” as the most memorable film of Lewis’ long career. In 2004, “The Nutty Professor” was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.”
The Eddie Murphy version, which also starred Jada Pinkett Smith,...

Exclusive: Renowned award-winning film and television director Peter Segal has signed with A3 Artists Agency. Known for his classic comedies, Segal will always be remembered for directing the Paramount hit Tommy Boy, which starred the late Chris Farley in one of his most memorable performances.

Even after its release in 1995, Tommy Boy is still just as popular today as it was then with new generations of fans quoting its lines and remembering Farley’s comic genius, who passed away in 1997.
In the 2000s, his ties to Adam Sandler led to more memorable films which included Anger Management, The Longest Yard and 50 First Dates.

At some point in every big screen comedian’s life, it seems like the idea of playing multiple roles in the same movie always rears its head, and the results have been pretty hit or miss. For every Peter Sellers in Dr. Strangelove, Mike Myers in Austin Powers or Eddie Murphy in Coming to America that found success and critical acclaim, there’s an Eddie Murphy in Norbit, Eddie Murphy in Meet Dave or Eddie Murphy in Nutty Professor II: The Klumps that drove the concept headfirst into the ground.

The writer-director has announced the retirement of divisive alter ego ‘Madea’. It marks the end of a surprisingly revolutionary era of cinema
“I’m sick of that old bitch,” Tyler Perry recently said of Mabel “Madea” Simmons. “Time for me to bury that old broad, man.” Usually that’s no way to talk about a septuagenarian great-grandmother, but Perry is referring to his own fat-suited alter ego, and many would agree with him. After nearly 20 years, 10 stage plays, 10 movies, numerous cameos and even a straight-to-dvd animation, Perry announced he is retiring the Madea character after next year’s A Madea Family Funeral. Few will mourn her passing but it’s the end of some kind of era.
For the uninitiated, which includes most non-African Americans, Madea is a bewildering proposition, her enduring popularity even more so. Her pantomime-dame antics make Eddie Murphy’s Nutty Professor II: The Klumps look Shakespearean.

Since debuting in 1999, Tyler Perry’s Madea character has appeared in dozens of films, plays, and television appearances. But in 2019, exactly 20 years after audiences first met the tough-talking grandmother, Perry is taking off the makeup and wig once and for all.
The filmmaker will do a farewell stage tour and 2019’s “Tyler Perry’s a Madea Family Funeral” to say goodbye to his iconic character.
“I’m happy to kill that old bitch, I’m tired, man,” Perry said on Bevy Smith’s SiriusXM show “Bevelations” on Monday. “I just don’t want to be her age, playing her.”
He also said on the program that his team finished shooting the film two years ago, but wanted to stagger its release following 2016 and 2017’s Madea Halloween films. Perry also wanted to focus on other projects like “Acrimony,” released earlier this year, and “Nobody’s Fool,” which will be out Nov.

Ruby Rose, who has just been cast in the lead role of "Batwoman" for the CW, will next be seen in giant shark movie 'The Meg' and has shared which monster she'd want to see take on the beast.
The Australian actress told IMDb: "I want to see a giant hamster go up against the Meg. I want the giant hamster to be 10 times the size of the Meg so it can fit inside the hamster's mouth, just like a great white [shark] can fit inside the Meg's mouth."
The last time we saw a giant hamster in a movie was 'Nutty Professor II: The Klumps,' but it's not nearly enough to take on the 70-foot megalodon shark seen in 'The Meg.'
Jason Statham, who stars in the movie, said: "It is the apex predator. There's nothing that can come up against the Meg. That's just a fact."
But co-star Rainn Wilson wants to see a crossover with another giant monster movie. "I'd want to see one of those robots from 'Pacific Rim' vs. the Meg," he said. "Like 'Alien vs. Predator.' Put two random things fighting each other."
'The Meg' is released in U.S. theaters on Friday, Aug. 10.

Bad films are part of the movie-making process. For every Citizen Kane, there are dozens of Law Abiding Citizens; for every The Exorcist, hundreds of Exorcist II: The Heretics.
They're all meant to do badly, because they are bad. But sometimes, there's an aberration. Sometimes... they're successful. Very successful. Very, very successful.
Here, then, are 14 of our favourite least favourite films to ever make studio heads' eyes turn into little dollar signs (in order of awfulness).
14. Anger Management (2003)
Rotten Tomatoes ranking: 43%
Production budget: $75 million
Worldwide box office: $195 million
Anger Management spluttered back into like in 2012 as a TV vehicle for snake blood-drinking "winner" Charlie Sheen. It lasted two seasons: the first had 10 episodes, the second 90, all so the show could go into syndication. As soon as it hit its 100th episode, it was immediately canned.
13. Meet The Fockers (2004)

Paul Weitz can’t and won’t be pigeonholed, as writer or director. His credits range from American Pie and Nutty Professor II: The Klumps to About a Boy and In Good Company. His latest effort debuted to great response earlier this year at South by Southwest, an ideal showcase for this indie drama. Grandma offers Lily Tomlin a juicy leading role and audiences a satisfying experience on a modest scale. What really makes it work is Weitz’s attention to detail in delineating his characters and his keen eye for casting. Every part matters to him; even actors who have just a few lines manage to leave an impression, among them Laverne Cox and the late Elizabeth Peña. ...

One thing I know after seeing Godzilla is Gareth Edwards doesn’t need a good script to deliver a great blockbuster. I don’t think I could even tell you the plot from memory right now, and yet I stand by my opinion that the monster movie reboot was one of the most spectacular and thrilling pieces of cinema released last year. Before that, with Monsters, he wowed me with a tired story recycled from It Happened One Night by throwing in some giant aliens and crafty direction. He could go ahead and make his Star Wars spin-off with no screenplay at all, and I’m sure I’d be happy. But I can’t speak for the rest of the franchise’s fans out there — especially if any overlap with the large group of people who hate what he did with Godzilla – and I certainly can’t speak for Disney and LucasFilm. They...

When writer Gary Whitta (amicably) left Godzilla director Gareth Edwards' upcoming Star Wars spin-off, rumors circulated that Simon Kinberg would take his place. It sounded like a good fit, and the geek crowd was happy: Kinberg has either written or produced other Star Wars films, X-Men, Star Wars Rebels, Sherlock Holmes, and The Fantastic Four, so this spin-off seemed to be in good hands. But it turns out that's not happening after all.
THR reports that Twilight: New Moon writer Chris Weitz has boarded the project as a replacement for Whitta. Weitz - who directed The Twilight Saga: New Moon along with features like The Golden Compass - also wrote Nutty Professor II: The Klumps, Antz, and The Golden Compass, so I wouldn't call this an upgrade. Weitz also wrote and directed About a Boy, which certainly has its fans but doesn't really inspire confidence that he's able to handle a big sci-fi spectacle.

From Saturday Night Live to Beverly Hills Cop to Nutty Professor II: The Klumps, Eddie Murphy is known for his rubber-faced brand of comedy. But for his next venture, the funnyman is doing drama. Deadline reports Eddie Murphy will headline Cook, a drama about the unexpected bond that forms between the titular cook and the mourning family he's hired to care for through the will of a dead man. Driving Miss Daisy director Bruce Beresford has been brought on board to helm what sounds like a touching film. Remarkably, Cook is based on a real story, the life of its screenwriter Susan McMartin, who has penned episodes of Two and a Half Men as well as Californication. Playlist shared the plot synopsis. Charlotte "Charlie" Brody is just a teen when her life undergoes some serious turbulence. Her mother's lover has died, and inexplicably has hired a cook named Henry Joseph...

We’ve reviewed every summer movie season since 1980 to find out which are the best, and which are the worst. Last week we posted our picks for the worst, and here we post our picks for the best.
2015 and 2016 may just be the most overthetop summer movie seasons yet. It seems like nearly every movie slated for a summer 2015 or 2016 release is heavily anticipated. Because of these impending summers of movie awesomeness, we’ve decided to take a look back at summer movie seasons of years past. The idea of the summer movie season is currently in full swing, but it didn’t catch on immediately. Hollywood had to do its fair share of experimenting to determine what types of films would be most successful. As a result, some summer movie seasons have been better than others. We’ve reviewed them all for you and ranked them from worst to best.

Chicago – John Wells’ adaptation of Tracy Letts’ “August: Osage County” is a movie that fell off the radar in 2013 during the busiest time of the year. When we were all caught up in narratives of lone survival, or tales of how this country was morally eroded by financial excess, this loud ode to miserable family gatherings moved into theaters, scooped up a couple of Oscar nominations for its revered talent (Meryl Streep & Julia Roberts), and then vanished.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
For the sake of its integrity, perhaps it’s better that this movie had such a fate, as its material can be raised to “SNL”-levels without much tinkering. The dysfunction of this movie is so cacophonous, with heated characters so pointed, that it doesn’t challenge the idea of family drama, but almost unintentionally parody it. One can imagine the video edits that await of “August: Osage County,” in which its many hammy “goddammit!

If you've lived your whole life waiting to see a 70-year-old version of the man who played Jake Lamotta duke it out with a 67-year-old version of the dude who was Rocky, this is your moment. Director Peter Segal (Tommy Boy, Get Smart, Nutty Professor II: The Klumps) brought Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone together, added some wisecracking Kevin Hart, a little Kim Basinger and Shane from The Walking Dead, and Alan Arkin in a Mickey Goldmill capacity, and now it's a real live movie set for Dec. 25.

Janet Jackson has joined the exclusive billionaires club thanks to her mega-successful albums, tours and acting roles, Variety reports.
According to the publication, Jackson has raked in a total of $260 million in album sales thanks to her hit albums Control (1986), Janet (1993) and Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989), and another $81 million off music and publishing fees. Her sold-out world tours have earned her another $458 million, with an additional $81.5 million coming from tour sponsorships and licensing fees.

And let's not forget that Jackson is an actress too -- her roles in The Nutty Professor, The Klumps, Poetic Justice and For Colored Girls has banked her a whopping $304 million.
Though Jackson of course isn't the only billionaire in her marriage -- her husband, retail entrepreneur Wissam Al Mana (whom she married last year in a private ceremony), is a billionaire all on his own.

The Grammys are just a week away, and I feel that justifies an exploration of one of my favorite topics: wonderful music from god-awful movies. Here are my 10 favorite tunes specifically produced for the soundtracks of wretched movies.
10. Michelle Pfeiffer, "Cool Rider" from Grease 2
Grease 2 is a confounding mess from start to finish, but it's a complete blast if you're into campy singalong experiences. The movie's best tune is undoubtedly the brassy, kicky "Cool Rider" where The Greatest Catwoman croons like Benatar over a rip-roaring pop hook. It's damn replayable, which is something not often said about Grease 2.
9. Alanis Morissette, "Uninvited" from City of Angels
City of Angels is one of those infuriating movies that dares to take its ridiculous melodrama seriously. It's a feature-length Creed video. Thankfully its soundtrack was a rightful blockbuster featuring original tracks by U2 and -- perhaps most famously -- the Goo Goo Dolls,...

Ben Affleck is in talks to write, direct and star in an adaptation of Dennis Lehane's Prohibition Era novel Live by Night. The story is set in Boston and centers on Joe Coughlin, who rebels against his cop father and becomes a career criminal, eventually joining a mobster. He rises up the ranks as the action moves to Tampa, Fla., then Cuba and features rumrunners, femme fatales, betrayals and good men committing plenty of sin. Affleck's Gone Baby Gone was also an adaptation of a Lehane novel. THR Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro are returning to their Rocky and Raging Bull roots in Grudge Match. I can't quite tell by Deadline's article if this is meant to be a comedy or drama, but the story will find Stallone and De Niro playing two retired brawlers looking to get back in the ring for one more fight. Kevin Hart...

January Jones became Fat Betty for a reason. When the actress started Season 5 of "Mad Men," she was eight months pregnant. By the time filming the season had wrapped, she had a five month old. In an effort to conceal her pregnancy, her character Betty put on the pounds.
"I was in seven hours of prosthetics every morning, trying to rip off a fake chest piece so I could breastfeed," Jones said in a new roundtable interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Jones, Julianna Margulies of "The Good Wife," Claire Danes of "Homeland," Kyra Sedgwick of "The Closer," Emmy Rossum of "Shameless" and Mireille Enos of "The Killing" all sat down for an interview with THR to discuss being leading dramatic actresses on TV.

Pretty much every time Eddie Murphy releases a film like A Thousand Words, Imagine That, Meet Dave or even Daddy Daycare, the critical world at large starts wondering out loud about whether we'll ever see the 'return of funny Eddie,' which is of course code for 'R-rated Eddie Murphy.' The implication is, of course, that Murphy's more family-friendly work isn't funny, which is true (Meet Dave, The Haunted Mansion) about as often as it's false (Shrek, Dr. Doolittle). But what these pundits fail to realize is two-fold. First of all, we've been wondering when the Eddie Murphy of old will return longer than he was around in the first place. Second of all, that persona is dead. Dead and buried, and Mr. Murphy killed it himself right onscreen in front of us 16 years ago. The very film that launched his most recent 'comeback' is the film that revolved...

Katy Perry has been popping up on TV more frequently these days, on shows like Raising Hope and How I Met Your Mother, so we know it’s only a matter of time before she makes her live-action silver screen debut. Can it just please not be in this movie, Harvey Weinstein? The producer and studio chairman is reportedly pulling for Perry to star as the spouse of Britain’s Got Talent star Paul Potts in an upcoming biopic; the cell phone salesman dazzled the U.K. in 2007 with his surprisingly stellar opera singing voice. “I was talking to Katy about a new project, a possible dramatic role in the Paul Potts movie, which will be shooting in England soon,” Weinstein gushed to the New York Post. “We’d really like someone like Katy or Adele to play the role of Potts’ wife, and Katy seemed genuinely interested.” You know...

To date, Hollywood has had a pretty rough time with adaptation of manga and anime. With the boxoffice bombs of movies such as Speed Racer and Dragonball: Evolution, you’d think Hollywood executives would give up on bringing to life something that is so precious to fans that even a slight change to the story will incite rage. Even M. Night Shyamalan’s take on The Last Airbender was critically lambasted. But this doesn’t stop filmmakers from trying.
Now that the live-action rendition of Akira has been put on hold, producers have their eyes on another anime to mangle. This time they have their sights set on Bleach. That’s right folks, Warner Bros. has acquired live-action feature rights to Tite Kubo’s manga and anime property Bleach. Variety is telling us that Dan Mazeau (Wrath of the Titans) will be in charge of adapting the manga for the big screen.

Academy President Tom Sherak wasted no time in announcing the replacement for Brett Ratner at this year’s Oscars. It will be super-producer Brian Grazer. This is a very polite solution to the problem that is Ratner. Grazer has a similar taste for mainstream fare (producing “The Nutty Professor,” “Nutty Professor II: The Klumps,” that dreadful live-action 'Grinch' movie), but unlike Ratner, Grazer is actually of Oscar-caliber (at least some of the time), having won Best Picture in 2002 for “A Beautiful Mind.” This writer can say with certainly that Ratner never would have won an Oscar before his string of controversial statements last week (even with his dream “Wicked” project, he would have been Rob Marshall-status), but now that he is persona non grata with the Academy, he's got an even steeper hill to climb.

Just Another F-ing Observer - Jafo #12: When Did Eddie Murphy Stop Giving A Sh**? Watching Eddie Murphy in his latest picture Tower Heist I started to wonder just who was I looking at? Don't get me wrong, Murphy provides a great number of laughs in what is basically a poorly conceived comedy. Yet, even he doesn't have his heart in the picture, giving a performance that suggests the mega star is tired and worn out. I didn't go into this film expecting the Eddie Murphy of old; it has afterall been nearly thirty years since he burst onto the silver screen and essentially changed cinema with 48 Hrs. In 1982, Murphy was a young comedian fresh off of TV's Saturday Night Live whose infectious energy stole the thunder in what was intended to be a vehicle for Nick Nolte. Murphy was not only young, but he was hungry, a fresh face...

20. Elvis Presley
The King of Rock and Roll's movie career is both the archetype and warning for every single performer on this list. "Love Me Tender," Presley's first of 33 films, made him a even bigger star than he was when it was released in 1956. But through the 1960s, the singer -- more specifically his manager Colonel Tom Parker -- favored quantity over quality, releasing a slew of critically panned films that watered down his once unshakeable sound. The worldwide celebrity continued yet the results were now unpredictable.
19. Janet Jackson
A perennial television star in the 1970s and '80s -- remember Willis' girlfriend Charlene from "Diff'rent Strokes?" -- Jackson made the transition to film in 1993 in John Singleton's "Poetic Justice," a romantic road trip film featuring Tupac Shakur. Singleton's follow-up to "Boyz n the Hood" was a surprise hit, though Jackson chose to focus primarily on her music through the next decade.

As of now, the two have completed the second draft of their script, and New Line is actively seeking a director for the project. Read more after the jump. An unnamed source (who was "briefed on the project but not authorized to talk about it publicly") told 24 Frames [3] that Peter Segal was among the directors New Line had spoken to about the project. Segal's last two projects have been reboots as well -- 2008's Get Smart and 2005's The Longest Yard, neither of which garnered particularly positive reviews. With a mother from Ghana and a father from Sierra Leone, Idris Elba was brought up in east London before finding fame in America. As he takes his place in Kenneth Branagh's Thor, we send Afua Hirsch, half-Ghanaian herself, to unpick this most modern of British actors
Idris Elba wants to know, on a scale of one to 10, how intimidating I find him in person. "Do you think I'm terrifying?" he asks. "I always wondered about that."
It's a glorious spring afternoon in south London's leafy Richmond and we are lounging in sunlight in an old-fashioned hotel bar. Elba, who is sitting sideways on the sofa opposite me, has moulded his tall frame into the cushions and is chuckling with a gruff laugh. He needs a shave – there are speckles of grey in his stubble – but other than that the 38-year-old is instantly recognisable.
How you would recognise him depends on your TV sensibilities.

Lionsgate president Mike Paseornek tells femalefirst.co.uk that "She has a powerful onscreen presence, with a vast audience, and we believe she will be an equally powerful presence behind the scenes. We are honored to be able to provide a home for her ideas, passion and immense talent"
Jackson started out as an actress before she became a singer, serving as a regular on three TV shows in the late 70's and early 80's - "Good Times," "Diff'rent Strokes" and "Fame". Then her singing career took off and she has popped up sporadically ever since in the likes of "Poetic Justice", "The Klumps" and more recently three Tyler Perry movies.

The reason for the surprise is simple: Peep World succeeds where these other comedies fail, which is say it’s funny.
There’s a genuine sense of honesty and realism here that many indie family dramas severely lack. Most families are labeled as dysfunctional because they act wacky thanks to cliched character quirks. The family here deals with real-life problems. Each member has their own set of issues. Jack’s (Michael C. Hall) business is failing, and he’s got a baby on the way. Nathan (Ben Schwartz) wrote a brutal warts-and-all book, titled Peep World, about his family. Cheri (Sarah Silverman) is a rage-filled,...

Starring: Martin Lawrence, Brandon T. Jackson and Jessica Lucas
It is possible that nobody will ever know what it is about men dressed up as sassy fat women that captures this nation’s imagination. Between Tyler Perry’s “Madea” movies, Eddie Murphy’s “The Klumps” and Martin Lawrence’s “Big Momma’s House,” all tremendously successful movie franchises that explore this conceit, it seems that the sassy fat drag plot can never be done too many times.
“Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son” is the third installment in Lawrence’s successful series, which features him as Malcolm, an FBI agent who repeatedly goes undercover as Hattie Mae Pierce, aka “Big Momma,” a large, feisty woman with a nose for mischief and an endless supply of matronly wisdom. Though the film features all the antics we’ve come...
