"Pitch Perfect" is the nation's number one a cappella comedy for at least two reasons (besides the fact that it's the only a capella comedy): It's blisteringly funny -- screenwriter Kay Cannon made sure of that -- and it's loaded with rearranged pop songs that will keep fans singing long after they leave the theater. Director Jason Moore picked most of the songs for the film, but the soundtrack production was left to Harvey Mason Jr. and Damon Thomas, a duo better known as The Underdogs. "They have a track record in terms of producing some of the world’s best pop vocalists, as well as musicals such as 'Dreamgirls,'" producer Julianne Jordan said in a statement. "We wanted that purity of unadulterated voices and harmonies to come through."
With "Pitch Perfect" out in theaters, Mason and Thomas provided HuffPost Entertainment with a track-by-track breakdown of the film's soundtrack.

Meryl Streep thanked "everybody in England" for allowing her to come and "trample all over their history" as she picked up her Golden Globe award for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher.
The Oscar-winning actress spoke of the "thrill" of winning the prize for best actress (drama) after playing Baroness Thatcher in the film The Iron Lady.
"This is such a thrill but really, really embarrassing in a year that saw so many extraordinary performances by women in leading roles - by my friends, by people I do not know, by people that I am so inspired by," she said in her acceptance speech.
The 62-year-old, who received her award from British actor Colin Firth, remembered during her speech that she did not have her glasses with her and would have to give her speech from memory.
"Oh, I am going to have to remember my speech!" she said. She added:...

When it comes to the Oscar for Best Original Song your guess is as good as mine. The Academy announced 39 songs vying for the category at the 2012 Oscars back in mid-December and of those 39 I have thrown a dart at the board and come up with five songs I felt may have a shot at the nomination. If I was to look for any kind of indicators from the awards handed out so far I would say "Hello Hello" from Gnomeo and Juliet and "The Living Proof" from The Help sure look like solid contenders as both were nominated by the Hollywood Foreign Press and the Broadcast Film Critics, but neither of them ended up winning. At the Globes it was Madonna winning for "Masterpiece", which isn't even eligible for a nomination at the Oscars, and at the Critics Choice it was "Life's a Happy Song" from The Muppets, a...

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association presented the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards last night and there were a few surprises, not least how tame controversial comedian Ricky Gervais was in hosting. More on that later but for now the results are important (although are they, really? – Isn’t this the 6th cousin to the Oscars who the Oscars barely recognise and like a disgruntled relation has to contend with once a year?) and the two big winners were Alexander Payne’s The Descendants and Michel Hazanavicius’ The Artist with two major awards each.
George Clooney won Best Actor Drama for The Descendants, which also won Best Motion Picture Drama above critics darling The Help, but a lot of pundits were expecting this going in. The Help, because of it’s civil rights story, was thought to be a tough sell to this crowd and is still likely to be the...

I am currently sitting in my room at the W hotel, only two blocks away from the Hollywood Palladium where tonight I will be attending the 17th annual Critics Choice Awards. It will be my first awards show and I cannot wait, but on top of that this is the first time I have ever attempted to predict the winners at the Critics Choice Awards, an award show I actually was part of the nomination and winner process. Taking a look at the field I notice I'm only predicting six of the categories to match up with my actual votes. I'm not going to break my votes down here, but you can hear how I voted by listening to our podcast from Tuesday right here. As for my predictions, my big winners for the night, should my predictions hold true, will be The Descendants and The Help, each going home with four awards,...

As a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (Bfca), I vote in the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards. They air January 12 on VH1, and my wife and I will be in the audience (look for the tall couple, she’ll be in some impressive heels). Every year I list my ballot before the awards. Thanks again to the Bfca for allowing me to do this.
The Oscars are a secret. You never see the ballot of Meryl Streep, George Clooney or Martin Scorsese come awards time. I’m not a fan of that. I know they don’t want to admit they have favorites, but I do. My ballot is below, and I think all critics should show what they consider the best, whether they vote in the Ofcs (Online Film Critics Society), Cfca (Chicago Film Critics Society), or Golden Globes.

Here they are... the first major movie and TV award nominations of 2011. The Golden Globes has always been a solid representation of what we might see for the Oscar nominations. The winners end up being a little different though. There are a few surprises on the list that I didn't expect to like Hugo, The Ides of March and War Horse being nominated for best picture. I just didn't think these films would get that big of a nomination. It is good to see that Rooney Mara got a nomination of best actress from her role in The Girl With the Drgon Tattoo, and Ryan Gosling for Best actor in the Ides of March. I'm not sure if they will win or not, but it's good to see them get a nomination. There were really a lot of fantastically great movies this year and it looks like it's going to be a fun reward season.

It's that time of year again, and the award buzz is starting to heat up. The nominations are in for the Critics' Choice Movie Awards, and while not all my nominations made it, the vast majority of them did, which makes me feel pretty good about how the year is going to turn out for all the award shows.
Take a look at the full press release below, and mark your calendar for January 12th! Let me know your thoughts, and if anything should have been nominated that wasn't. My picks to win are in bold, and I'll let you know if I nominated anything that didn't make the cut.

Chicago – Nominations have just been released this morning for this year’s Critics’ Choice Awards, and some common trends in award ceremonies we have already seen continue in this set of nominees. With ten different Best Picture nominees and thirty different actors and actresses nominated, it is no surprise that there are some similarities.
The nominees for Best Picture include several films that have already been winners at other awards, like “The Artist,” “The Descendants,” “Hugo,” and “The Tree of Life,” but also include nominees “Drive,” “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close,” “The Help,” “Midnight in Paris,” “Moneyball,” and “War Horse.”
Along with the normal categories (acting, directing, writing), the Critics’ Choice Awards is one of the first to have a full list of categories, like art direction, makeup, costume, visual effects, score, and song. The most notable here may be “The Muppets” receiving three of the five Best Song nominations: “Life...

The Broadcast Film Critics Association (an organization I belong to) announced the nominees for the 17th Annual Critics Choice Awards this morning and Martin Scorsese's Hugo and Michel Hazanavicius' The Artist each received a massive 11 nominations with both films receiving nominations for Best Picture, Actor, Director, Screenplay, Cinematography, Art Direction, Editing, Costume Design and Score. Looking over the list I can't say there are many surprises though I am sure there are many that will be happy to see Andy Serkis with a Supporting Actor nomination for Rise of the Planet of the Apes and it's interesting to see neither Glenn Close or Janet McTeer were nominated for Albert Nobbs. When it comes to my personal nominations compared to the final tally, we are going to discuss the nominations and our personal process on the podcast later today, but the notable differences begin with Hanna being the only...

The Broadcast Film Critics Association (Bfca) has announced the nominees for the 17th annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards. I'm a proud voting member of the Bfca and 250 of us turned in our ballots last Sunday. And honestly? I'm very happy with the final nominations. "The Artist" and "Hugo" led the pack with 11 nominations each including Best Picture. "The Help" and "Drive" received 8 nominations each, while "The Descendants" and "War Horse" gathered 7 nods a piece.
My favorite part of the nominations? Andy Serkis, the heart of any movie he's starred in, finally received a nomination for his wonderful performance in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes!" Motion Capture be damned! Serkis was brilliant in the film!
Winners will be announced live on VH1 on Thursday, January 12th at 8pm Et/Pt, and I will be attending!

The Artist and Hugo continued their domination of the early awards season, each racking up 11 Critics’ Choice nominations from the Broadcast Film Critics Association, perhaps the only critics group that presages the Academy Award nominations with any accuracy. Drive and The Help each scored eight nods, while The Descendants and War Horse received seven. Also in the Bfca’s Best Picture top 10: Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball, and The Tree of Life. (Not included, meanwhile: Bridesmaids, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, The Ides of March, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

Awards season is really hitting its stride now, people. The nominations for the 17th annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards were announced today at 6 a.m. The show, which will air live from the Hollywood Palladium at 8 p.m. Et on Thursday, January 12, on VH1, is based on votes from the members of Broadcast Film Critics Association, and it’s had a pretty good record for predicting who will win the Oscars. (All four of last year’s acting winners took home Academy Awards, just for example.) So let’s see what they’re saying about this year’s flicks…
Hugo, Martin Scorsese’s fantastical 3D trip back to Paris in the Roaring ’20s, and French silent film The Artist the lead this year’s nominees with 11 apiece. It will be a particularly big night for Scorsese, who is the only nominee who is guaranteed to be walking home at the...

As American Idol (TV) shockers go, last Thursday's elimination of Pia Toscano was ranked high on the "Omg, you're kidding me!" scale. Fans across America were in disbelief when the singer was in the bottom three then received the lowest amount of votes from America, resulting in her departure. Her captivating voice charmed millions, but as is often the case, the voice was simply not enough. Following her elimination, Pia sat down with a panel of journalists to answer questions about her departure from the show, along with what plans she has for the future. The following is a compilation of the Q&A session with Pia. Obviously words such as “shocker” have been thrown around in the past 12-hours about your elimination. Why do you think that the voters didn’t show up for you? I’ve been asked that question a lot today, and I really don’t know.

While MTV News' Musical March Madness continues for one more day, the actual Ncaa basketball tournament wrapped up last night with a nail-biting finale between Duke and Butler, with the Blue Devils overcoming the Bulldogs by a score of 61-59 for their fourth championship. It capped off an incredible tournament, full of some incredible upsets, some remarkable Cinderella runs by the likes of Cornell and Northern Iowa and some thrilling individual games (the double-overtime tilt between Xavier and Kansas State will go down in history as an all-time great).
It was also a big night for Jennifer Hudson, who won the honor of singing "One Shining Moment" at the end of this year's tournament. The song pops up every year as the score to the montage of Ncaa tournament highlights. It's usually performed by David Barrett, Teddy Pendergrass or Luther Vandross (all of whom have recorded versions of the tune...

Chicago – Some documentaries tell stories that are so suspenseful and crowd-pleasing that one would swear they were written by Hollywood screenwriters. The extraordinary series of events chronicled in “More Than a Game” has a trajectory and formula straight out of a classic “rags to riches” sports picture. Let’s hope Sandra Bullock doesn’t star in the remake.
Director Kristopher Belman sensed cinematic potential in the story of his hometown basketball team, the Fighting Irish of St. Vincent-St. Mary high school in Akron, Ohio, and began filming them in 2002. Four of the players (aka “The Fab Four”) had been friends since childhood: small yet swift Dru Joyce III, imposingly large Sian Cotton, remarkably skilled Willie McGee, and future NBA superstar LeBron James. Belman’s instinct and luck were impeccable, and the footage he captured was arrestingly candid. His resulting film, however, is a touch too slick for its own good.

Although she had been spotted with a fuller figure recently, "Bleeding Love" hitmaker Leona Lewis denied rumor that she has had a breast surgery. As quoted by Contactmusic, the 24-year-old singer insisted that her assets are natural. Her bigger bosom was purely caused by her gaining weight.
"Every few months I get people asking me if I've had a boob job," explained the singer who allegedly turned down 1 million pounds for appearing in Playboy. She continued, "No, I haven't. With me, every time weight goes up or down a little bit, it's so noticeable there and people start to speculate about it. But no, they aren't fake."
Leona Lewis rose to stardom after she won British television singing competition "The X Factor" in 2006. A year later, she released a debut effort "Spirit" which became the biggest selling album of 2007 in U.K. and Ireland. She releases her second studio project...

More Than A Game hit me a on a personal level. No, I didn’t spew hate all over it because it involves a Cleveland team nor did I walk out of the theater cursing Kristopher Belman for being a Clowns fan or supporting LeBron James. No, his film impacted me in the sense that I have been there and seen what basketball players go through thanks to the adventures of my father’s days as a basketball coach (he still coaches, so the adventure is far from over.)
It likely won’t have the same impact on other movie-goers, but the themes of brotherhood, family, and pursing your dreams should touch anyone. Belman’s crafted a film that uses basketball as a means to show all of these themes, and doesn’t require knowledge of the game to enjoy it. He also wisely chooses not to keep the focus...

Hype Williams-directed clip is basically the opposite of Drake's dark 'Successful' video.
By James Montgomery
Drake in the video for "Forever"
Photo: Harvey Mason Music/ Zone 4 Inc/ Interscope Records
One of the coolest things about Drake's "Successful" video — which premiered late last month — was that it didn't really feel like a Drake video. Sure, he (and Trey Songz) are featured prominently throughout, but the clip is dark and brooding, a stylized, noir-ish nightscape that (like the song itself) takes most of the celebratory tenets of R&B videos and made them look, well, decidedly less fun. In fact, "Successful" is seriously somber, to the point where it borders on dark, a rather bold and artsy move for a guy tipped by pretty much everyone to be the next big thing.
Not surprisingly, reactions were a bit mixed, with many critics loving the clip and many fans reacting with confusion.

Leighton Meester, the girl who plays Blaire Waldorf on the CW's hit show, "Gossip Girl" is apparently a professional singer, and has signed a record deal with Universal Republic through Time-Act Music for her first debut album set to release during the fall of 2009. My sources tell me that the music she's recording has an "electro pop edge sound to it. She began recording in March of 2009 with top producers and artists like : Polow Da Don (Usher, Fergie), Harvey Mason, Jr. (Justin Timberlake, Pink) and Spencer Nezey (Jupiter Rising).
