Its that time of the year again in when everyone prepares their Oscar predictions, because let’s be honest for a moment – the best part of the Oscars is placing your bets on who’ll win and hopefully walking away from a long and usually boring ceremony with some extra cash in your pocket. This morning the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominations for the 84th Academy Awards with no major surprises but instead, a long list of snubs. Martin Scorsese’s Hugo is the surprise leader of the 2012 Academy Award nominations with 11 nods, including Best Picture and Best Director. The Artist followed with 10 nominations. Here are my predictions of who I feel will take home gold come Sunday February 26, as well as those films and talent who I believe were snubbed.

I am currently sitting in my room at the W hotel, only two blocks away from the Hollywood Palladium where tonight I will be attending the 17th annual Critics Choice Awards. It will be my first awards show and I cannot wait, but on top of that this is the first time I have ever attempted to predict the winners at the Critics Choice Awards, an award show I actually was part of the nomination and winner process. Taking a look at the field I notice I'm only predicting six of the categories to match up with my actual votes. I'm not going to break my votes down here, but you can hear how I voted by listening to our podcast from Tuesday right here. As for my predictions, my big winners for the night, should my predictions hold true, will be The Descendants and The Help, each going home with four awards,...

Chalk more wins up for "The Descendants."
The International Press Academy handed out their 2011 Satellite Awards last night and "The Descendants" and "Drive" split the major categories, with "The Descendants" winning Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay and "Drive" taking home the awards for Best Director (Nicolas Winding Refn) Best Actor (Ryan Gosling), Best Supporting Actor (Albert Brooks) and Best Sound.
"The Help"'s Viola Davis won the award for Best Actress, while her "Help" co-star Jessica Chastain ended up winning Best Supporting Actress, but for a completely different movie — "Tree of Life," which also won Best Original Screenplay but surprisingly lost out on Best Cinematography to Steven Spielberg's "War Horse."
"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2" continued it's disappointing run of award season snubs, as it lost out in all three categories it was nominated for, including Sound, Score (won by "Soul Surfer") and Best Visual...

The International Press Academy handed out its 16th annual Satellite Awards last night. While The Descendants may have won the Best Motion Picture and Adapted Screenplay, it was Drive that was the biggest winner of all. The ambient indie took home four awards, including the Best Actor trophy for Ryan Gosling and Best Director for Nicolas Winding Refn. Elsewhere, awards-season frontrunner The Artist turned in a relatively modest performance with only one award for Best Art Direction & Production Design. See the full list below.

hollywoodnews.com: “The Descendants” and “Drive” sped away with the most wins at the Satellite Awards Sunday night, including Best Picture for Alexander Payne’s bittersweet drama and Best Director for Nicolas Winding Refn.
“Drive” actually topped “Descendants” on the evening, claiming four trophies including Best Actor for Ryan Gosling and Best Supporting Actor for Albert Brooks.
Elsewhere, Viola Davis won Best Actress honors for her role as a Southern housemaid in “The Help,” while Jessica Chastain (who appears alongside Davis in Tate Taylor’s drama) took home Best Supporting Actress honors for her work in Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life.” At this stage of the race, it appears like Chastain’s the one to beat in the Best Supporting Actress race … so long as voters can come to a consensus on which performance they’d like to honor.

I'm still waiting on the Best Picture winner from the Southeastern and Chicago Film Critics groups, which will be the last of the awards I will be tracking until January 12, 2012 when the Broadcast Film Critics Association hands out their awards at the 2012 Critics Choice Awards. However, tonight the International Press Academy announced the winners of the 2011 Satellite Awards where The Descendants took home the award for Best Motion Picture and Best Screenplay, but Drive was the night's biggest winner taking home four Satellite Awards for Director (Nicolas Winding Refn), Actor (Ryan Gosling), Supporting Actor (Albert Brooks) and best Sound. Joining The Descendants with two wins was The Tree of Life for best Original Screenplay and a Supporting Actress win for Jessica Chastain, which may be a sign the actress will face a problem of competing with herself as she has been racking up awards lately for her Supporting role in The Help,...

More love for "The Artist!" This time, it's from the Las Vegas Film Critics Society's Sierra Awards which gave the excellent Michel Hazanavicius film Best Picture, Actor, Score, Art Direction, and Costume Design trophies.
But Hazanavicius lost out to "Drive's" Nicholas Winding Refn for the Best Picture category. "Drive" also took home the Best Supporting Actor award for Albert Brooks. And don't underestimate the power of Melissa McCarthy! Her memorable performance in "Bridesmaids" was given the Best Supporting Actress award! Oh, and I'm also glad that the Las Vegas Film Critics Society gave Michelle Williams the Best Actress award for her brilliant portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in "My Week with Marilyn."

It's that time of year again, and the award buzz is starting to heat up. The nominations are in for the Critics' Choice Movie Awards, and while not all my nominations made it, the vast majority of them did, which makes me feel pretty good about how the year is going to turn out for all the award shows.
Take a look at the full press release below, and mark your calendar for January 12th! Let me know your thoughts, and if anything should have been nominated that wasn't. My picks to win are in bold, and I'll let you know if I nominated anything that didn't make the cut.

The Broadcast Film Critics Association (an organization I belong to) announced the nominees for the 17th Annual Critics Choice Awards this morning and Martin Scorsese's Hugo and Michel Hazanavicius' The Artist each received a massive 11 nominations with both films receiving nominations for Best Picture, Actor, Director, Screenplay, Cinematography, Art Direction, Editing, Costume Design and Score. When it comes to my personal nominations compared to the final tally, we are going to discuss the nominations and our personal process on the podcast later today, but the notable differences begin with Hanna being the only...

The Broadcast Film Critics Association (Bfca) has announced the nominees for the 17th annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards. I'm a proud voting member of the Bfca and 250 of us turned in our ballots last Sunday. And honestly? I'm very happy with the final nominations. "The Artist" and "Hugo" led the pack with 11 nominations each including Best Picture. "The Help" and "Drive" received 8 nominations each, while "The Descendants" and "War Horse" gathered 7 nods a piece.
My favorite part of the nominations? Andy Serkis, the heart of any movie he's starred in, finally received a nomination for his wonderful performance in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes!" Motion Capture be damned! Serkis was brilliant in the film!
Winners will be announced live on VH1 on Thursday, January 12th at 8pm Et/Pt, and I will be attending!

The Artist and Hugo continued their domination of the early awards season, each racking up 11 Critics’ Choice nominations from the Broadcast Film Critics Association, perhaps the only critics group that presages the Academy Award nominations with any accuracy. Drive and The Help each scored eight nods, while The Descendants and War Horse received seven. Also in the Bfca’s Best Picture top 10: Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball, and The Tree of Life. (Not included, meanwhile: Bridesmaids, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, The Ides of March, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

Awards season is really hitting its stride now, people. The nominations for the 17th annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards were announced today at 6 a.m. The show, which will air live from the Hollywood Palladium at 8 p.m. Et on Thursday, January 12, on VH1, is based on votes from the members of Broadcast Film Critics Association, and it’s had a pretty good record for predicting who will win the Oscars. (All four of last year’s acting winners took home Academy Awards, just for example.) So let’s see what they’re saying about this year’s flicks…
