In 1999, Tom Hanks starred in The Green Mile based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name. The narrative followed the journey of a death row prison guard during the Great Depression who witnesses supernatural events after the entry of a convict played by Michael Clarke Duncan.
Sam Rockwell in The Green Mile
The film also benefited from a disturbingly brilliant performance from Sam Rockwell who played the role of William ‘Wild Bill’ Wharton, one of the most difficult and uncontrollable prisoners in the facility. The Oscar winner’s unhinged portrayal of a challenging character was interestingly inspired from the iconic performance of Michael Keaton in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice.

Apart from excellent performances by Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan in The Green Mile, Sam Rockwell who played William ‘Wild Bill’ Wharton in the film, was a standout among the ensemble.

Since his first film, Writer/Director Wes Anderson has become known for his highly visual combination of bright colors with an older aesthetic. His costuming and set design have a very specific signature that makes it easy to identify when watching a Wes Anderson movie. With him currently working on a new film, The Phoenician Scheme, which reunites him with his muse Bill Murray, we take a look back at all his feature-length films and try to figure out where they rank. Tim Robbins has been a prominent actor in the industry ever since his impressive films in the 90s. His incredible performances in Jacob’s Ladder and The Shawshank Redemption made him a household name. He went on to earn an Oscar for his heartbreaking performance in 2003’s Mystic River.

Robbins made a surprising entry into the superhero world with the 1986 film Howard the Duck. The film was a colossal flop at the time of release and was not received well. However, Robbins is not against returning for a proper modern revival of the character, but he wants it to have a different tone than the over-the-top nature of the 1986 film.

Twenty years ago this month, the fairy tale-like romantic comedy “13 Going on 30” starring Jennifer Garner made its way into cinemas. The actress played Jenna Rink, a socially awkward soon-to-be 13-year-old who quickly realizes that she “hates being 13.” She makes a birthday wish to be “thirty, flirty and thriving.” With the little help of some wishing dust, she wakes up the next morning to discover that her wish has come true.
It was a defining moment in Garner’s early career. Her role as Sydney Bristow in the television action thriller series “Alias” had made her a breakout star (including at awards shows) just a few years earlier. She won the Golden Globe for Best Drama Actress in 2002 and had competed again in 2003 and earlier in 2004. She had also been nominated for two Emmy Awards one Screen Actors Guild trophy.

Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins’ The Shawshank Redemption is undoubtedly one of the best films released in 1994, the same year when Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump were released. While the latter two managed to nab some Oscars, The Shawshank Redemption shockingly went empty-handed, but, it hasn’t undermined its reputation of being one of the best films of that decade.
Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman in The Shawshank Redemption
The inspiring and heartwarming prison drama told the story of one man’s resilience and eventual freedom from being put into prison despite claims of innocence. The ending of the film saw the emotional reunion of Freeman and Robbins’ characters. It seems the original treatment of the film was slightly different, one which Freeman was vehemently against.

Frank Darabont’s The Shawshank Redemption has become a timeless masterpiece of cinema that has continued to resonate with the audience as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. While the makers or the cast of the film may not have foreseen such a prospect for the movie at the time, especially when it failed at the box office, it overcame everyone’s expectations to become one of the most beloved movies of all time.

Frank Darabont's 1999 Oscar darling "The Green Mile," based on an inexplicably serialized novel by Stephen King, is set in 1935 Louisiana in the fictional Cold Mountain Penitentiary, specifically the prison's death row. The correctional officers are overseen by Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) who struggles to retain his soul working such a dire job. The floor that leads to the prison's electric chair is painted green, earning it the titular nickname. Paul attempts to wrangle his officers' cruelty and retain what little hope he can, even after witnessing the state execute prisoner after prisoner. To make matters worse, he's suffering from a bladder infection.
The wildest prisoner on death row is William "Wild Bill" Wharton, played by the always amazing Sam Rockwell. Wharton was clearly mentally ill, and would frequently assault the officers, forcing him into a padded cell. He spat insults and racial epithets, flashing his yellowed teeth and horribly casual hate.

More than action and adventure, Tom Hanks is best known for his capabilities in dramatics. He specializes in acting out complex character arcs that have an impact on audiences, rather than physically fighting antagonists. Such a reputation has followed him for the majority of his career. Even when he was a part of movies that covered conventionally violent topics, the projects focused more on the characters and their states of mind than complex action sequences.
Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump
The perfect example of such a film would be Saving Private Ryan, directed by Steven Spielberg. The film is known for eliciting a very emotional reaction from its audience and is regarded as one of the greatest war films of all time. It would seem that viewers weren’t the only ones affected by Spielberg’s excellent storytelling.

Martin Scorsese is ol’ blue-eyeing a big new project.
Variety reports that Scorsese is developing a Frank Sinatra biopic that will star Leonardo DiCaprio as the legendary crooner and Jennifer Lawrence as movie star Ava Gardner, Sinatra’s second wife. It would be the Oscar-winning director’s seventh film with DiCaprio and a reunion for DiCaprio and Lawrence, who worked together on the Best Picture-nominated dark comedy “Don’t Look Up.”
The 81-year-old filmmaker plans to tackle the Sinatra biopic after “Life of Jesus,” his independently financed religious film that is expected to go into production this year. When it comes to celebrities and those who live inside the gates of Hollywood, it would seem that the skeletons in their closets find a way out eventually. Masters of the Air is the third World War II miniseries from Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, following Band of Brothers and The Pacific. Goetzman said Spielberg’s father had been pushing them to do the series about WWII pilots since their first.

Ron Howard's 1995 film "Apollo 13" is an effective thriller even when forearmed with the knowledge that the three astronauts depicted returned to Earth okay. For those unfamiliar with the Apollo 13 mission, in April of 1970, Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise took a shuttle into space, hoping to land on the moon. An electrical problem, however, caused an explosion on the craft, and the astronauts lost a great deal of their oxygen supply. With resources nil and communication limited, the astronauts had to find a way to survive in space and return to Earth alive. Sadly, they didn't get to walk on the moon.
In Howard's film, the astronauts were played by Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, and Bill Paxton, while Ed Harris played their contact back at NASA. The film was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won two for Best Sound and Best Editing. It...

When it comes to complex and challenging roles that require submitting oneself fully to the process, few actors can claim to have achieved what Tom Hanks has. The two-time Oscar winner is synonymous with some of the most iconic characters in films like Forrest Gump, Philadelphia, Cast Away, and many more that have showcased his prowess as a performer.

Hanks is also famously known for voicing the iconic cowboy toy, Woody, in Pixar’s animated masterpiece Toy Story, a franchise that pioneered a whole new revolution in Hollywood. Having played the cult character over 4 films, The Terminal star wholeheartedly welcomed the opportunity to reprise his role in a possible 5th installment, but under certain mandates.

Barron Trump is in the enviable position of being a nepo baby, with a former Potus and a supermodel for parents.
This means he is intimately familiar with private jets, deluxe parties, and a big allowance.
But being a public figure is not all wine and roses, with a lack of privacy and public expectations a couple of the downsides.
Barron, the only child of Donald and Melania Trump is noticeably private despite all the perks of his privileged lifestyle. Here are three huge signs that Barron hates being in the bright lights.
Barron’s Lack of Celebrity Friendships
When Malia and Sasha Obama were First Kids, they were photographed with celebs like Justin Bieber, Janelle Monae, Drake, Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, and Tom Hanks.

When producers Robert L. Boyett and Thomas L. Miller mentioned 1950s cross-dressing movie Some Like It Hot while pitching a “sophisticated buddy comedy” to ABC, the network said they would air it only if that drag element was in it. The result: The November 27, 1980, premiere of the zany, good-natured, and slightly lewd Bosom Buddies, starring newcomers Tom Hanks (who soon reached stardom with the 1984 movie Splash) and Peter Scolari. They played best friends Kip and Henry, who disguise themselves as gals named Buffy and Hildy to get cheap housing at a women-only hotel. Nearly every episode of the two-season series airs in this Catchy Comedy marathon. It’s the rare actor has an opportunity to portray a real-life World War II hero and a notorious villain of American history in the space of just a few months, but the Irish-born Anthony Boyle is that guy. He’s king of the prestigious limited series in 2024 in a pair of big-ticket Apple TV+ projects. He was starring as Lieut. Harry Crosby of the Air Force’s famed Bloody Hundredth bomber group in the nine-part, $250 million epic “Masters of the Air” from the team that made “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific,” Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman. And a few months after completing filming on that in England, Boyle started work on the seven-part historical drama “Manhunt” portraying no less than John Wilkes Booth, the man who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. “I wanted to do kind of the opposite of what I’d just done,” Boyle says.

The Christina Applegate-led dark comedy from the 90s gets a shrewdly made update that acts as a blueprint for how Hollywood should revisit older material
Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead is the ultimate ode to the latchkey generation. To watch the 1991 film now is to be reminded of a simpler time when parents barely checked in, house parties were all the rage and Christina Applegate was the ideal girl nextdoor. Given its place in the grand tradition of coming-of-age classics, somewhere between Tom Hanks’s Big and Jennifer Garner’s 13 Going on 30, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood mulled a remake of Applegate’s celluloid breakout. Any update would have to relate to a new generation that, in many ways, has had to grow up even faster than their predecessors.

The 2025 Oscars ceremony is months away, but we already know some things about the show, the potential nominees and who may host it.
Read on below for answers to your questions about the 2025 Academy Awards.
When Are The 2025 Oscars?
The Oscars will be handed out Sunday, March 2 — a week earlier than the March 10, 2024 show. The ceremony will start at 4 p.m. Pt/7 p.m. Et — a welcome time change that began with the 96th Academy Awards last March. The show had typically run from 5 p.m./8 p.m. (and often much later depending on speeches).
Who Is Hosting The 2025 Oscars?
The host usually isn’t announced until November or December, but given the show is on ABC through 2028 and given Jimmy Kimmel’s well-received efforts earlier this month, he may well be back again. If so, it will be his fifth time hosting, putting him in company with the great Johnny Carson.

Conan O’Brien returns to The Tonight Show stage after more than a decade, but this time as a guest. The comedian and former host, who once helmed the late-night talk show, now revisits to reminisce about his past experiences with the current host Jimmy Fallon. However, what people can’t forget is his exit from the show. It’s no secret that his departure was not without its share of drama, and the lingering feud with Jay Leno remains a topic of interest and speculation among viewers.

Hollywood studios have long made a point of promoting tentpole movies at the Cannes Film Festival, using the Cote d’Azur location to highlight their A-list titles with splashy promotional campaigns.
A similar, if less flashy, version of the big Cannes launch took place Tuesday for The Americas, the long-awaited premium wildlife documentary series from BBC and NBCUniversal. Producers of the series, narrated by Tom Hanks, revealed how their team used cutting-edge technology to take viewers inside the lives of critters from across the continent.
The footage, screened at international television confab MIPTV, showed extraordinary sights, including a bear making a treacherous half-mile descent down a crumbling cliff face, with two cubs clinging to her for life, images captured by a drone camera.

The producing team behind Tom Hanks’ upcoming wildlife documentary series “The Americas” prepped for five years and made 180 expeditions to deliver the 10-episode show.
For Universal Television Alternative Studios (Utas), who are co-producing the series with BBC Studios’ Natural History Unit, “The Americas” represents a big swing: it’s the first time the network is entering the wildlife documentary series space and, according to Utas president Toby Gorman, the show is also the most expensive unscripted project in NBCUniversal’s history.
“We were collectively starting to internally discuss whether this is a genre we wanted to enter,” Gorman recalls during a panel previewing the series at Mip TV in Cannes. When Mike Gunton, creative director of BBC Studios Factual, happened to knock on Gorman’s door, it felt like “kismet.”

Execs on NBC’s The Americas were seeking “the American version of David Attenborough” when booking Tom Hanks for the upcoming epic wildlife series.
BBC Studios’ Mike Gunton, a storied natural history exec who has worked on the likes of Planet Earth and Dynasties, said he had “written down who I wanted to do the music and who I wanted to be the narrator” when embarking on making the show nearly five years ago, and had scribbled “‘Tom Hanks?’.”

It's always a thrill when a former "Saturday Night Live" cast member comes back to Studio 8H to host the late night sketch comedy show. That's especially true when it's a cast member as beloved as Kristen Wiig. That last time the "Bridesmaids" star hosted "SNL" was in December 2020, and it just so happens the best sketch of the night was a new holiday favorite where she plays a mother who gets a robe for Christmas while the rest of the family gets a plethora of better gifts. However, since Kristen Wiig was hosting "SNL" for a fifth time this past weekend, she got a different robe. And she wasn't the only one.
While it's become customary for newly inducted Five Timers Club hosts to get monologue bits that bring back some legendary hosts like Steve Martin and Tom Hanks, it's not always logistically possible to make it a star-studded affair.

But what you may be less familiar with is the fact that Emma Stone can become just the 20th actress (and the 25th entertainer overall) to claim an Eggocc if she triumphs in the race for the Best Drama Actress prize at this year’s Emmy Awards for her performance in the Paramount+/Showtime series “The Curse.” Too, Robert Downey Jr. is poised to be only the sixth actor to claim an Eggocc should he take home the Emmy prize in September for Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor for his work in the HBO limited series “The Sympathizer.”

The “SNL” 5-Timers Club has been around since December 1990, when Tom Hanks joked in his monologue that a person’s fifth time hosting is when they receive a membership card into the club. Hanks then left the stage and joined Steve Martin, Elliott Gould and Paul Simon in an expensive-looking set with hors d’oeuvres, waiters and a doorman. The iconic club set would be seen multiple times on NBC’s late sketch comedy throughout the decades, often (but not always) when a new host is anointed as a five-timer. Members of the club are always seen wearing exclusive jackets embroidered with a “5” badge.

It’s been five years since Toy Story 4, the critically acclaimed fourth installment in one of Pixar’s greatest animated franchises, was released. While a sequel was announced back in February 2023 by Bob Iger, the movie is still not even close to being released, but we are happy to say that we finally have an official release date for the upcoming Toy Story 5 movie, which is set for a June 19, 2026 release. Yes, it’s a long wait, but Toy Story fans will have gotten used to it by now since the shortest span between two movies from the franchise was an enormous four years, which passed between the release of Toy Story and Toy Story 2.

After watching Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber in 1994, fans of the film industry were convinced that Jim Carrey was the hottest new comedy genius in town. The actor is singlehandedly responsible for some of the most hilarious memories from a lot of people’s childhoods. It’s safe to say his personality, both on-screen and off-screen, revolutionized the comedy genre.
Jim Carrey in The Mask (1994)
However, lately, things haven’t been looking too good for Jim Carrey. After 2016, the actor has only been a part of three movies, courtesy of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Emmy watchers should not be surprised if multiple top contenders this year opt to take a shot at the drama series race rather than compete in the limited series category. The list is known to include Apple TV+ ‘s “Masters of the Air,” FX’s “Shōgun” and HBO’s “The Sympathizer,” which means that those platforms are considering future seasons of those shows.
Multiple sources tell Variety that the top-tier contenders that seemed naturally bound for the limited series race are the subject of intense strategy discussions among network executives, agents, creators, PR and awards consultants. In order to win the Television Academy’s blessing to compete for drama series, networks would have to prove that the production will be ongoing beyond one season, which would differ from their original intent. Decision time is fast approaching as the submission deadline is May 9 for programs that aired between June 1, 2023-May 31, 2024. Representatives...

So who has hosted “Saturday Night Live” at least five times? Scroll through our “SNL” 5-Timers Club members list below, which includes (in alphabetical order by last name) some of the most recognizable people in the industry, including Tina Fey, Paul Rudd and Tom Hanks. Gallery...

Cannes — For years, reports of MipTV’s terminal decline were somewhat exaggerated. Now, however, they’re real. On March 26, Rx France, organizers of MipTV, announced the launch of Mip London, over Feb. 23-28, 2025. MipTV’s 2024 edition will be its last.
Attendance, once 10,000 in 2018, 9,500 in 2019, had plunged to 5,510 on-site delegates last year. That still made it the second biggest TV event in the world. Still dwindling participation this year, is down to around 3,000.
What a MipTV swan song, bulwarked by Canneseries, can deliver, is another question. 10 takes on this year’s edition:
MipTV Sticking to Its Guns
Traditionally, MipTV delivered a straight sales market where sales companies or divisions hold back-to-back meetings with distributors who get links to their shows. History has hardly been on MipTV’s side. As simply raising the finance for a show in an environment of rising costs and declining commissions has become more and more of a challenge,...
