Whodunnit
19 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Interesting angle on this film. I was in a table quiz once where the question was posed: "Who played the title role in the film 'The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance'?"

It raised a lot of debate as the question could be perceived from two very different perspectives. Is the answer John Wayne (whose character fired the shot) or is it James Stewart (whose character gained the REPUTATION as the man who shot Valance)?

Depending on your viewpoint, either and both answers are correct. So I throw the debate open on this forum and I'd be very interested in the views of the great IMDb family. Was it Duke or Jimmy?

Poor rendering of a fascinating book
1 August 2023
Where to start? Oh yes, the casting. In this respect they got it nearly perfect. Blair Brown and Harry Hamlin are both fine actors but the scripting of their characters leaves them little scope to work with. The characters of Penny and John Pope in the book were sugary sweet to begin with but this was made even more saccharine in the TV series. However, in the positive side, David Dukes is immaculate in the role of the roguish Strabismus. Beau Bridges, James Garner, Michael York and Bruce Dern are all inspired choices too and revel in their much better defined roles.

Another point of annoyance for me is the deviation from the staggeringly comprehensive and educational form of the book. The statistics and detail in Michener's book make an educational saga. The basic storyline is more or less faithful to the original but many technical and historical elements were sacrificed for the purposes of drama. Of course, this is a TV show so there has to be a soap opera feel to it but overall, this was an opportunity missed.

Gets better every time I watch it, which is a lot!
4 May 2023
Watching this again (for the umpteenth time). I have to confess I hated it the first time I saw it. Despised it. Thought it was an abomination and an insult to the work of the Bard. As a young man, I appeared as Tybalt in a local production so I'm deeply invested in this play. But then, I read an interview with Baz Luhrmann in which he made the devastating point that this was written by Shakespeare as a MODERN play and intended to be contemporary and suddenly it all became clear. This is an extraordinary piece of cinema, a work of genius and Will himself would wholeheartedly approve. Leo and Claire are magnificent as is the entire supporting cast (special shout-out to Harold Perrineau as Mercutio). I loved the original play set in the time of Shakespeare but this translates very well into 1990s California. I still well up at the final scene and the dam usually bursts at the final line: "For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo."

(And the soundtrack album is a piece of perfection too.)

Nope.
8 October 2022
Atrocious. I struggled through the first episode in a desperate attempt to find even one passable gag. No luck. This scans like it was written by a class of ten year olds. And it can't be saved by even one of the incredibly badly crafted characters. I'm led to believe this was based on a U. K. show (which has mercifully escaped my notice). This is usually a recipe for disaster. Don't you think the yanks would have learned this by now? Maybe if they'd gone a different direction and aimed for a horror series, it wouldn't be quite as objectionable.

25 episodes? That's about 24+1 too many. Can I have that half hour of my life back now please?

One teeny weeny little hair to split
7 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Excellent episode in a series that hit its peak in this season with numerous memorable scenarios and situations.

One tiny element that may (or may not) have been overlooked though is that Tom is still alive as the clock ticks over into 9th April and thus past his scheduled death but in the original timeline, he was killed on the 8th. Given the time difference between Vietnam and home, there were still at least 11 hours to go before it was midnight back in the US so he wasn't quite safe yet. He might have been killed any time up to 11:00 in Vietnam and still be counted as 8th April.

No pleasing some people

I know it's loosely based on the life of a criminal but the wife was a moany ol' cow, wasn't she? Julie Walters is obviously excellent in the role given the material and the character she had to work with and Phil Collins is brilliant too.

Don't be swayed by the negative comments
20 March 2022
I read some of the reviews on here and was quite surprised at the negativity. Most of the criticism seems to be aimed at the lack of science fiction. It's as if the reviewers completely missed the point. It's NOT about sci-fi but about the people on the three-year mission and how separation from their families affects them in different ways. It just happens to be set in space which gives the writers a lot of scope for inventing hazards which in turn unites the crew in spite of their differences and hostilities. (The lack of team unity is the one questionable point for me.)

My advice to these nit-pickers is: instead of micro-managing the technical minutae and getting overly excited by somebody misplacing a switch (cos they wouldn't do that on a REAL flight 🙄), why not go back to watching the fantasy series of Star Wars with the spear-chucking teddy bears and asthmatic baddies and Kung fu gnomes and leave drama to grown-ups?

Away isn't perfect but it's a competent drama about plausible characters and it's an interesting 10-part series. A sequel is both unlikely and unnecessary.

Auf Wiedersehen, Pet (1983–2004)

Wonderfully engaging show... up to a point
8 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Series 1 was funny and quirky. This was the series where we meet and grow to love the seven disparate characters individually.

Series 2 was funnier thanks to the introduction of the hilariously sinister Ally Fraser played by the peerless Bill Paterson.

Series 3 was very well written and produced - probably the best of the lot. Hat tip to Noel Clarke whose introduction and insertion to the group was a seamless and hugely impressive tribute to the late Gary Holton.

Series 4 was stretching things a bit but still very good. All the usual boxes were ticked: Neville got into an embarrassing situation, Barry ended up in jail, Oz got some lovin' and somehow, everyone conspired to prevent Dennis getting some. In Auf Wiedersehen Pet, some things never change.

Series 5 however (just two episodes) was an unmitigated disaster, a train wreck and a monumental mistake. Appalling writing, storyline and script. Hard to believe that the creators of the earlier work could have churned out such substandard work. Craftsmen such as those in the cast would have been ashamed to be associated with it. If you're a fan of the show, steer clear. It's two hours of your life you'll never get back.

Train wreck of Tay Bridge proportions
8 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This show is so bad, a spoiler could only serve as a public service. A monumental mistake to take such a brilliant ensemble group and serve them up a script and plot as absurd and badly conceived as this. It serves absolutely no purpose whatsoever and does nobody in the cast any favours. Even the storyline stinks to high heaven. Why and in what universe would six men released from a hostage situation in barbaric conditions not want to get the hell out of there? How would they not want to run and not look back pausing only perhaps to point the 82nd Airborne Division in the direction of the location of their captors? What would possess them to stick around and finish a building contract for the very people who'd imprisoned and mistreated them? (And where did they get the materials for the job, the local B&Q perhaps?) A far better use of resources would have been a documentary about the four preceding series or even a "where are they now" featurette. Anything really would have been preferable to this abomination.

Note to Ted Danson: Ted, you have GOT to fire that agent
24 September 2021
Oh my good Lord... I found this and tried to watch it. It is APPALLING in every way. An astonishingly unfunny piece of garbage. It's yet another Tina Fey smartarse parody of Trump with poor Ted Danson in the lead role showing all the sensitivity and intelligence of the orange oaf. The jokes are of sledgehammer quality entirely devoid of subtlety, taste or wit. The entire mess is as far removed from comedy as it's possible to be. I lasted seven painful minutes before deleting it and purging my senses with something more intelligent, like an ad for carpet cleaner.

An appropriate score for the captain, no. 10
21 June 2021
Most people are not Roma fans. But you don't need to be to appreciate this gem of a mini series. If you love football, this is for you. Beautifully portrayed and produced with healthy doses of humour, it tracks the Captain's last season as a player, the disharmony with the coach, the support of his family and the adoration of his fans who take hero worship to new and sometimes scary levels. There are many moments of his early career which are told in brief flashback episodes but always in context and always just brief enough to make the point without labouring it. The series is neatly bookended by the view of a passionate fan whose whole life it seems revolves around Totti. We all have our sporting idols but after watching this, you might find room for one more.

Hats off to the whole cast for sublime performances, to the writers for making it so entertaining and the producers for not skimping on production values. And keep the Kleenex handy for the finale.

Blue Bloods: Cutting Losses (2017)
Season 8, Episode 1

Welcome signs of improvement
30 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The opening episode of series 8 offers encouraging signs that this long-running cop show is going to step up. It's long overdue and many of the characters had begun to stagnate. The format was predictable and repetitive and the series had been in danger of morphing into a saccharine-infested sentimental family show instead of an interesting series about a family of law enforcers. A sort of Hill Street Blues meets The Waltons. (I always fast forward through the excruciating family dinner scenes. They generally serve no other purpose than to offer homey parables and innocent analysis of complicated situations by the precocious children and offer nothing to the bigger picture.) However, the sudden and brutal departure of Linda and Danny's heartbreaking reaction to it, the attack on Erin's ex and a new mayor seeking the removal of Frank from 1PP gave Blue Bloods a welcome transfusion. The final scene in this episode realigns Danny's perspective and offers hope for a more dramatic storyline in place of the schmaltzy insular over-the-top Oirish family dynamic which had become the default calibration for the series.

How can a topic as fascinating as Apollo be made to be so dull?
21 April 2021
Watching this tonight. Given the raw material at his disposal and the incredible stories these fascinating men had to tell, Steve Pyke somehow contrives to make this unbelievably dull and uninteresting. The guy could bore for his country. He gets to meet loads of Apollo astronauts but all he does is drone on about photography and take a succession of extreme close ups. No insights, no personal touch, not an ounce of humanity in any of the connections with these wonderful men, most of whom are now sadly gone. What a waste of such a glorious opportunity.

Sad and sudden decline
7 January 2021
Seasons 1 - 5 were outstanding. Quirky, zany, irreverent, unpredictable, unconventional and very very funny with first class performances on a consistent basis from the principles in the cast. The cameo appearances were unexpected and highly entertaining with many stars enthusiastically embracing a change from their comfort zones. And the music accompaniment was spot on too. Then came season 6 and it all went pear shaped. The introduction of new characters and poor development of existing characters was uniformly disastrous. The change of form is terribly disappointing and only underlines the thought that this previously peerless show should have quit when it was ahead. A guaranteed 10 stars rating has therefore been reduced to 5 and only on the strength of the first 5 series.

Bad Grammar
2 December 2020
What was Kelsey Grammar thinking when he signed up to be in this turkey? How the mighty have fallen. From Cheers and Frasier to this tenth rate Trading Places tribute act. There's no doubting the stellar nature of the cast but considering the awful script (and Kelsey's strangled British accent), they must be seriously considering getting new agents. Honestly, this horror show has almost nothing going for it, the single saving grace being Pearse Quigley as the eccentric tramp Oscar. Even the music and the end credit slide show lack charm. Avoid this train wreck even out of curiosity.
