Good rainy day suspense horror
27 May 2023
Firstly, this movie ain't as bad as the negative reviews here would have you believe. While it was somewhat predictable in spots and felt like a movie that could have been made in the 80's or 90's, the storyline was still interesting and the actress in the lead role I thought was pretty good. I would have probably enjoyed this more at the Cineplex but, as a streaming movie, it's worthy of at least checking out when you're in the mood for an old-school suspense/horror flick. So, keep an open mind next time you can't seem to find a scary flick in the vast world of streaming horror and at least check out the trailer.

Missed opportunity
13 November 2022
I love horror anthologies and really was hoping this would be a good one. I'm 64 and recall seeing original Twilight Zone episodes as a child back in the early 60's and have been a lifelong fan of TZ, Night Gallery, as well as Amazing Stories, Masters of Horror, Tales From The Darkside, Ray Bradbury Theater, the original Creepshow, a few of the Stephen King films through the years. So, I really wanted to like this Guillermo Del Toro series on Netflix but, like several other reviewers on here, I enjoyed the first couple of episodes but after that, quickly lost interest. The stories are too long and dull - if they had been no more than 30 or 40 minutes max, they might have packed more punch. Also, I found Del Toro's opening monologues a little hard to hear as his voice is not one that projects well. So, if there's a second season I hope they shorten the length of the episodes - perhaps feature two 25-min. Segments per episode and maybe consider a new host for the opening monologues. I think George Clooney has a voice that would work well with this kind of show.

Two Sentence Horror Stories: Bag Man (2021)
Season 3, Episode 1

Very creepy...should be made into a feature film!
18 April 2022
I've watched just about all episodes of this series and this one stands out as unusually creepy for a network TV program. The title character is the scariest thing I've seen since the debut of Freddy Krueger except Bag Man is even scarier, IMO. If I were to recommend an episode of the series to watch first, this would be the one. Ignore negative reviews and check this out now on Netflix.

Vampires again...really?
17 October 2021
I rate this 6 out of 10 stars because it's not terrible but did the world really need yet another mini-series about vampires? Would be nice if Hollywood could find something original and groundbreaking for a change but this ain't that. I'm a fan of Adrien Brody - it's good to see him in a high profile role, and the rest of the cast is pretty good, particularly the kids but overall, I'd recommend skipping this.

Cool story idea but over-long
10 August 2021
Interesting, fairly original storyline (could have been written by Stephen King) with pretty good performances but the main complaint I have is the film is too long at nearly 2 hours before the end credits begin rolling. If it had been trimmed to about an hour and 40 mins., it wouldn't have hurt a thing. Still, overall a solid entry for a horror film.

For fans of The Strangers
10 January 2020
This movie I found to be surprisingly creepy and similar to such films as "The Strangers". If you have Hulu and enjoy well-done creepy thrillers, you should definitely check this out. Stars Clayne Crawford from the TV series "Lethal Weapon".

Under the radar film that's worthwhile
19 May 2019
This movie held my interest from start to finish. It was part Hitchcock, with a light touch of David Lynch with an ending I did not see coming. But one thing that really helped create the vibe of the film was the very good music score, which I don't think no one here has mentioned in reviewing this. I'm surprised I had not seen or heard of this movie in the 10 years since it's release...I feel it's better than a lot of films of a similar genre. Catch it on Anazon Prime if you can.

I was intrigued from the start
24 September 2018
This film has a David Lynch/Rod Serling blend of influences so if you're into Twin Peaks and The Twilight Zone, you should find much to enjoy here. I did, and in one scene it even features a short clip of one of my all-time favorite songs, "Sukiyaki". If you're as tired of the same ole found footage, zombie apocalypse glut of films as I am, check this film out.

Wait for it to hit Netflix
20 August 2018
I felt this movie didn't quite live up to it's potential. It had an interesting premise but seemed to lack something so it's basically a missed opportunity.

Pretty decent for TV
9 October 2008
Although there's nothing here that hasn't been done before, I found myself interested in this half hour mini-movie (more episodes coming?). About a teen who buys a weird-looking cross off a website and then things in his, his sister's & her boyfriend's lives take a drastic turn for the worse. The website they bought it from has You Tube-style videos of other buyers who have bought the cross to their misfortune - one who informs that the only way to get rid of the cross' curse is to sell it. Check this out on Fearnet cable - it's on Free Movies On Demand. Like I say, it's not exactly original but it's better than the ratings here might suggest and a fun little half hour horror show in time for Halloween.

Jasper, Texas (2003 TV Movie)
Plays like an R-rated Lifetime flick but not bad
5 July 2003
Aside from the Lifetime comparison this is a pretty decent dramatization of the terrible crime in Jasper. Really believable performances by both Jon Voight (with quite a believable Southern accent, similar to Bill Clinton's) and Louis Gossett, Jr. This would probably have been much more intense as a major motion picture theatrical release, but it's worth checking out as it is. In a couple of brief scenes, the film interjects real news clips of Bill Clinton and others speaking about the incident.

If Blair Witch had the witch from this movie...
8 June 2003
...then The Blair Witch Project might have been scarier than it was. At least, there would have been a face to the Blair Witch. As far as this movie goes, that's about the best I could think to say. I rented the movie from pay-per-view and I wish I had picked something else. Two scenes that had some semblance of fright factor in this film: close to the start of the movie, the young boy is hiding in the bathtub because he knows the spirit of the old lady is in the house, and the camera finds her on the wall above the bathroom door. That was about the scariest scene in the whole film. And maybe the second scariest scene was when the mask finally comes off. In the hands of another director, (John Carpenter, maybe?) this could have been so much more, but it's no more than a bad TV-movie. This will be better, though, (at least for TV viewers that bother to waste 90 minutes watching it) when it hits The Sci-Fi Channel, because at least then there will be commercial breaks for relief. One final observation: the film is incredibly short - like 75 minutes- but it seemed like forever.

Very enjoyable movie with EXCELLENT picture quality for 1945
4 January 2003
I was channel-surfing one evening and came across this movie on Showtime's Family Showcase channel and my first thoughts were, "Wow! They sure did a good job of recreating the 40's in this picture." Then, I put the cable movie info on the screen to discover this film was MADE in 1945, which really amazed me because the color quality is so modern-looking and the clarity of the picture is unlike any other movie I've ever seen that was produced in that era, just amazing. Obviously, it's been digitally restored to some extent but it must have been shot right the first time for this kind of quality. As for the movie itself, the actors and actresses were excellent and the storyline very entertaining, keeping me watching to the end (I came into the film maybe 20 minutes late or so). Old classic movies aren't really something I've ever been a major fan of with the exception of the classics like Gone With The Wind, Wizard of Oz, etc. but I really enjoyed this film. Again, the quality of the picture makes watching this film seem like modern-day filmmakers were transported back to 1945 and shot it with their present-day cameras & production. Highly recommended from both entertainment value and technical expertise for the period.

Better Than Expected - Not Bad at All
12 April 2002
This was a pretty decent haunted house movie, quite better than the remakes of both "The Haunting" and "House On Haunted Hill", and it was especially better than the recent TV movie, "Stephen King's Rose Red" (supposedly the "ultimate haunted house movie"). To the folks here that have wrote the highly negative reviews about this film: LIGHTEN UP- every horror flick simply isn't going to be an outright, jump-out-of-your-seat scary, horror masterpiece as "The Exorcist" or "Alien"- in fact, most films aren't going to live up to the standards those movies set. Your expectations seem to be way too high and you're probably expecting this type of movie to be crap, so you set yourself up with that in mind and- guess what, that is your opinion when the movie is over. Nothing ticks me off more than to read these reviews by folks who want to smugly blast a new film just for the sake of being able to do it. Anyway, enough ranting about that. I rented this film and was entertained much more than I anticipated: the ghosts were pretty scary, the special effects really good. I plan to buy the film on DVD to add to my library. I can imagine that, had I saw this on the big screen- in full surround, it would have scared the bejesus out of me! Still not the "ultimate" haunted house movie, but a little bit closer than we've seen in a while. Definitely worth adding to your horror collection. Rating: ***

Rose Red (2002)
Disappointing
4 February 2002
The hype for this mini-series is that Stephen King's inspiration was to write "the ultimate haunted house story". To cut to the chase, this mini-series had an interesting plot with a lot of potential but, for me, the translation from the teleplay (or book, if there is one) to the TV screen just didn't work. It simply wasn't very scary and I've seen many movies of this genre over the years that were much, much better (the original "The Haunting" and "Poltergeist" spring immediately to mind). This movie, as with some other SK works, would have been better served as a theatrical film with a big name director and larger budget.
