DOLLY DEADLY is a LOT better than I was expecting from your usual indie horror genre. It's a trailer trash epic about a young boy who is traumatised when he sees his mother die in a gruesome hair dye accident at the film's outset. There's something about Dana Nelson's brief performance - it's extremely naturalistic - that grabs the viewer's attention and holds it.
I still didn't really enjoy this movie but it's considerably better than most micro-budget efforts, possessing verve and energy. The direction is quite strong and incorporates lots of tricky to give the film a buzz, a vibe. The story is predictable but has some fun psychological aspects. It never quite overcomes budgetary constraints but the cheap gore effects aren't bad. In the end it's the stylish direction that makes this cheapie work.
