Ghost (1990)
Buy Stock in Kleenex Before Watching This
It's basically a story of a great love that's been taken away. All the other components are secondary, though a huge part of what makes this movie work. Patrick and Demi form a rock solid base. Whoopi brings the mortar to hold the base together. Vincent Schiavelli has always been an underrated actor. HIs performance here shows just how wonderful he is at his craft. Tony Goldwyn played his part to perfection. So much so, I have had struggles watching anything else he's done. Tho once I get over myself, I enjoy his other works, lol. He is a very good actor! I hadn't watched this in about 15 years. The emotional impact is just too heavy to watch very often.
The Atoning (2017)
Horror That Uses Old School Fear, Not Gore
I'm not a fan of horror films that rely on blood and guts to inspire fear. Tickling our imaginations is more my preference. But, to each his own. This movie started rather slow but it still caught my interest. I knew quite quickly what they should have known all along. And rightly so! It wasn't about what happened. It was about the family figuring it out. The female lead and the son put on some good acting. The male lead wasn't quite as good but he was still quite a bit beyond okay. I would have tweaked the ending a bit...just because I'm a sap, lol.
Gallery of Horror (1967)
Don't Believe the 'So bad it's good' Reviews
Based on others' reviews, I was prepared for something very schlocky. Yes, the acting is hit and miss. The special effects are basic. However, it's not bad at all! I enjoyed it in all its low budgetness. Not having a lot of money for production doesn't always mean a subpar movie. I got a kick out of the ways they compensated during killings, procedures, etc. Each story had its own feel and it was fun seeing some of the same actors playing totally different characters in the different segments. I will probably watch it again and recommend it for anyone who enjoys horror anthologies.
Dream Home (2006)
Overcame Its Shortcomings
I almost didn't watch this because of the horrid reviews but thought, what the heck. I didn't have anything better to do. The budget was extremely low, the direction and editing were meh. Some of the acting was pretty lame but some was average or a little better. The storyline was very good and held my interest throughout. It even had a bit of a surprise ending. I don't know if I'll ever watch it again but I am glad I ignored the reviewers saying to stay away
Dolly Deadly (2016)
Wow. Just Wow
I don't normally feel real empathy and compassion for characters in movies but this is an exception. Benji and his life tore my heart out! The plot, the dialogue, the direction, the editing and particularly the the portrayal by Justin Moore, really tugged at my heartstrings. I found myself wanting to cuddle Benji and tell him that life isn't just what his granny and her boy-toy have shown him. I don't know if I'll watch this again. It really hurt this ol' gramma's heart.
Sacrificial Freshmen (2011)
Big Surprise! I Loved It!
Considering the low rating of 3.5 (at the time) I was hesitant to watch this movie. But eh, it was a free lookie-see on Amazon Prime & I was bored. I watched it in one sitting, resentful of having to take a bathroom break. The acting isn't stellar but it's pretty doggone good. The story had a some twists and turns, all of which segued well with each other. And yes, I cried a wee bit at the end...whether it was happy or sad tears will remain a secret. You'll have to watch yourself! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Blood of Dracula's Castle (1969)
Just What I Was Hoping For!
This is one of the best of its genre from the mid to late sixties. It's campy, the acting ranges from great to laughably mediocre. The special effects are very low budget, to the point of being humorous. But the story line is good, except for the mysteriously absent signs of Johnny being a werewolf. It has so many beautiful women and the men are quite handsome(except Mango, of course & I kept seeing Chris Kattan in my mind every time they said his name!)
I have this on Amazon Prime and will probably watch it again. And again. I really did enjoy the time spent.
