Michael Caton-Jones is confirmed to direct an Amsterdam-set road-trip dramedy titled “Baggage,” which centers around a Holocaust survivor and her family.
The logline reads, “A dysfunctional family embarks on a road trip to their matriarch’s Holocaust hero ceremony, but their decades-old secrets threaten to derail the European vacation.”
Penned by Ryan Elkins, the script was previously recognized as a semifinalist for the 2017 Academy Nicholl Fellowship. “Baggage” marks Elkins’ feature film debut, but the up-and-comer is currently in production on another movie as well, which has yet to be announced.
Caton-Jones most recently directed, wrote and produced 2019’s “Our Ladies,” which is nominated for two awards, including best feature film, at the 2022 BAFTA Scotland Awards. The Scottish-born filmmaker garnered critical acclaim for his direction on features like 1990’s “Memphis Belle” and the rom-com “Doc Hollywood” the following year. Studiocanal is buying the remaining shares that it does not own in European producer Tandem Productions/Studiocanal. The company is acquiring the shares owned by partners Rola Bauer, Tim Halkin and Jonas Bauer.
The Canal Plus Group-owned TV and film firm will now 100% of the company that it first bought a 51% stake in in 2012.
The move will see Bauer gear up to leave the business but she will continue to work on a number of TV projects for the company through a non-exclusive consulting deal. These include Shadowplay, written by The Bridge’s Måns Mårlind, produced by Tandem Productions and Bron Studios for Zdf, Viaplay and Canal+, and On The Verge, written by and starring Julie Delpy and Elisabeth Shue for Canal+ and Netflix.

Also on the slate is The Winter King, a series adaptation of Bernard Cornwell’s trilogy of Arthurian novels, from the producing team at Bad Wolf.
Producer/writer/director Edward Burns is behind Gibson Station, a dramedy set in 1984.
Acclaimed singer-songwriter Jackson Browne is executive producing music docuseries Songs That Changed the World, directed by Emmy winner Thom Zimny.
Here are details about the projects on Epix’s slate:
The Winter King (scripted)

A Column Of Fire (scripted)
Based on the novel by international best-selling author Ken Follett, this Elizabethan-era drama, which debuted at #1 in multiple countries around the world, follows the romance between Ned Willard and Margery Fitzgerald beginning in 1558 and spanning half a century of political intrigue and turmoil. A Column of Fire is written by Lizzie Mickery and produced by Snowed-In Productions and Sony Pictures Television. Snowed-In Productions Ruth Kenley-Letts, and Mickery are Executive Producers.
Fall River (docuseries)
1979 – Fall River, Ma – home to the notorious Lizzie Borden, three young women were killed in a series of brutal murders. Police alleged a satanic cult was practicing human sacrifice. Twenty years after the trial, the lead investigator became so haunted by inconsistencies in the stories that he re-investigated his own case after he retired. Evidence surfaced bringing the entire story into question. This documentary series will tell shocking true story of a town caught in the grips of the Satanic Panic, with new witnesses and evidence that shed light on murders that were thought to have been solved. Fall River is produced by Blumhouse Television and Pyramid Productions. James Buddy Day serves as executive producer and director.
Fiasco (docuseries)

Fiasco is produced by Neyfakh’s Prologue Projects and Luminary Media, LLC. Songs That Changed The World (docuseries)

In addition to Zimny and Browne, Armyan Bernstein (for Beacon Pictures) will executive produce.

Period dramas rarely break the fourth wall, but for Mans Marlind, the creator-writer-director of Tandem’s “Shadowlands,” “we don’t have to be traditional. Especially with period, you need to be even more modern, to avoid the stiffness of costume drama,” he says.
“Television’s development [is] creating audiences that are smarter, meaning we can be more and more daring, which is what audiences are looking for,” says “Shadowplay” co-director Bjorn Stein. The show has been shooting since April 29 in and around Prague.
“Shadowplay’s” edge and moral ambiguities have attracted more talent. Star Taylor Kitsch recalls his agent, CAA’s Jack Whigham, passing him the first two episodes’ scripts.
“We’re always looking for something different. I pride myself on taking risks,” he told Variety.
“Shadowplay” is set on a large-scale canvas, the bombed-out Berlin of 1946, one year after World War II, as the war’s former Allies, the U.S and Russia,...

With the score for “Alias Grace” composer Mychael Danna wanted to “honor the period” in which the story takes place, while at the same time putting a “postmodernist shade” on it. He shared musical duties with his brother Jeff Danna on this Netflix adaptation of Margaret Atwood‘s novel, which has brought the duo an Emmy nomination for Best Movie/Mini Score. Watch our exclusive video interview with the Dannas above.

A Savant Article
CineSavant shows off an arcane observation: in 1957, scenes from a glossy CinemaScope Fox production directed by Raoul Walsh, were almost immediately re-purposed, with grandiose special effects added, for a landmark science fiction fantasy. It’s an opportunity to admire the resourceful artistry of Jack Rabin, Louis DeWitt and Irving Block, special effects professionals that did fine work but were seldom if ever considered for industry awards.
Back in the 1970s I picked up from Larry Edmunds’ Bookstore a copy of a one-shot special effects fan magazine that I think had been put together by the effects master/researcher Robert Skotak. The photo magazine lauded the efforts of a Hollywood effects partnership consisting of Jack Rabin, Irving Block and Louis DeWitt. Their names appeared on dozens of 1950s films, for their creative optical work — whatever enhancements might be needed, from simple title sequences to matte shots and even stop-motion animation when required.

Europe during the Middle Ages was a place of contrasts, where serfdom squalor festered in the shadow of royal splendor, an era of death and deterioration that somehow managed to produce magnificent castles and glorious cathedrals. Centuries later, we are still enthralled by the bravery of chivalrous knights and the majesty of the regal rulers who conquered, divided and united empires through blood, sex and marriage.
This Easter weekend, lose yourself in the romance and intrigue of the Middle Ages as we present the entire epic mini-series World Without End in an eight-hour television event. Adapted from bestselling author Ken Follett's follow-up to The Pillars of the Earth, the award-winning World Without End mini-series is set in the war-torn and plague-ridden 14th-century, in the fictional town of Kingsbridge, which finds itself struggling against both Crown and Church. British actor Tom Cullen was tapped to fill the rather large shoes of Dan Stevens, stepping into the role of playing opposite Michelle Dockery’s Lady Mary on hit period drama Downton Abbey.
Downton Abbey's Tom Cullen

Jessica Brown FIndlay (Lady Sybil) departed Downton Abbey midway through the hit period drama's third series, while Dan Stevens (Matthew Crawley) exited in the 2013 Christmas special.
New cast members joining the show for its upcoming fourth series include Gary Carr (Bluestone 42), Tom Cullen (World Without End...

I just wanted to give you a heads up that Tom Cruise's new sci-fi film All You Need is Kill has been re-titled Edge of Tomorrow, and a badass new poster has been released for it!
Personally I think All You Need is Kill is a much better title. Edge of Tomorrow sounds like a basic, boring movie title for a film I wouldn't be interested in seeing. It also sounds like a film Roland Emmerich would direct.
Warner Bros. has announced that they are officially bringing the movie to Comic-Con, and they will give fans a look at the first footage from the Doug Liman-directed film. I can't wait to see it! Especially after seeing this poster. Here is the press release with all of the details:
