With an extensive portfolio of experimental short films under his belt, Mandico first gained widespread recognition through his feature-length debut, Wild Boys. This film set the stage for his unique cinematic vision, one that employs a surrealistic approach to merge narrative and form in a manner that eschews naturalism. His subsequent work, After Blue, further explored this dreamlike narrative structure, imbued with a complexity of themes. Mandico returned to Locarno with his latest work, She Is Conann (orig. title: Connan), while also screening the complete Barbarian cycle, in which She Is Conann serves as a central element. The Podcast Academy, a group of 1,000-plus industry creators and executives, awarded Campside Media and Sony Music Entertainment’s Chameleon: Wild Boys with the top honor at this year’s 2023 Ambie Awards.

Exclusive: The first-look deal is a commonplace occurrence in the world of television and film.
Such agreements are now coming to the podcasting business as Campside Media, the company behind the successful Chameleon franchise, has struck a trio of deals.
The business has closed deals with Believe Her creator Justine van der Leun, Sam Mullins, who is behind Wild Boys and Dr. Dante, and Sean Flynn, the man behing The Bering.
It marks a shift in direction for the relatively nascent audio medium, giving a podcast studio such as Campside a first look at projects that may have previously been shopped around, and giving creators an element of stability that hasn’t traditionally been present in podcasting.
Campside, which was established by long-form journalists Josh Dean, Vanessa Grigoriadias, Matt Shaer, and screenwriter/producer Adam Hoff in partnership with Chernobyl producer Sister, has produced nearly 30 shows over the last couple of...

Plus, Custo’s tips for emerging directors. First up are the responses from the director who has been with the Seven Network show since 2013.
Q: How are you, the cast and fellow crew members adjusting to the new health and safety protocols?
A:Very well all things considered. We have great nurses and safety officers keeping us vigilant and the crew are doing a fabulous job getting the job done whilst maintaining distance from each other. The cast have been wonderful as well and very understanding of any changes we make in terms of blocking scenes to keep distance.
Q: I imagine it may be difficult to stop some reflexive actions like touching colleagues or props?

I’ve always wondered where the film canon resides—what are the visiting hours? Then I fancy it as a columbarium: Haunted perhaps but no soul in the walls. Among floating images of time-honored bronze urns in well-appointed niches, I can easily picture "classic" faces like Garbo’s and Cary Grant’s. Astaire and Rogers gliding down some endless gallery where time, politics and choreographic imperfection have all been banished, a case of deeply inoffensive ars gratia artis. However, there's no place within the rhapsodized canonical order to ensconce a Frankie Darro, leading his own junior army of unemployed masses in William A. Wellman's Wild Boys of the Road (1933). As a countervailing force to American optimism and the Crash, Darro’s physiognomy says, essentially, that 1933 is a banner year for breadlines. Scowling mastiff. Lipless malevolence tapering from a massive square cranium to an angular jaw framing a surly, petulant mouth.

It's with a great sense of disbelief - a feeling I know is shared by many in our industry still reeling from the passing of Jeff Truman - that I solemnly inform Awg members that we have lost the significant talents of James Walker from our screens.
A bright and sharp-minded contributor to Australian scriptwriting for more than a decade, James - at the youthful age of 41 years, husband and father of two young boys - succumbed to a diabetic coma on 11 January and was tragically unable to recover. He passed away peacefully on 20 January, surrounded by family.
A boy from Perth, James' talent was noticed early; he was singled out via a competition and sent to La for an experience that cemented his intention to become a writer. In various roles - including Script Editor, Script Producer and freelance writer - James worked on many of our fine dramas,...

Australian rules football drama Blinder is searching for a new distributor.
A theatrical release was originally planned for January 24 but a clash with another planned release by independent distributor Jump Street Films spurred the change, according to director Richard Gray.
The $5 million film will now be screened for distributors in the next fortnight ahead of a planned wide theatrical release next year. Gray said keeping the release date within the window between the Australian Open in January and the start of the Afl main season was crucial with executive producers and former Afl greats Glenn Archer and Sam Keckovich, and legendary actor Jack Thompson, also lined up to do "a mountain of publicity".
The film also stars Josh Helman (Animal Kingdom, The Pacific), Oliver Ackland (The Slap, Cloudstreet), Rose McIver (The Lovely Bones), Steve Bisley (Red Hill), Anna Hutchison (Wild Boys), Zoe Carides (Death In Brunswick), Bob Morley (Road Train...

Lionsgate will distribute Filmscope Entertainment’s Needle across North America on November 29 via DVD, Video-on-demand and digital download.
The release follows the success of the Western Australian horror film in Turkey, where it has taken $US250,000 and has also seen Visey acquire the DVD rights for Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay, while Entertainment One has bought the rights for the Benelux region.
Needle‘s producer Deidre Kitcher said, “Lionsgate are the masters of horror film distribution in North America and for a small West Australian film to secure such a release through them is very exciting and a credit to the team and vision of the Director, John V. Soto.”
“I’m confident the film will do well as Americans love a good scare and appreciate fresh, inventive material, said John V. Soto. “I’m sure they’ll get a kick out the supernatural voodoo machine and mythology we created.
