The Wayward Girls
Prismark1022 February 2022
Bunty returns and Sergeant Goodfellow gets to step up as Inspector Mallory is away.

Bunty is giving a speech at the local girl's Borstal about how to be a lady.

However all is not right. Maybe discipline has gone awry and staff morale seems to be low.

The Governor is found dead and an unruly inmate seems to be the guilty party.

The temporary Governor is just a bit too friendly towards Father Brown and Bunty. She also seems to be able to afford nice handbags and jewellery.

Then there are those rumours that some of the inmates released are found jobs that is just forced labour in another name.

The episode was a breath of fresh air without Mallory's bluster. It was good to have Bunty back.

However those poor inmates. It really was out of the frying pan and into the fire for them. No one seems to believe their stories until Father Brown came along.

Best of This Season

This was a delightful episode. The fact that the angry, over played, always yelling Inspector Mallory and the mean spirited Mrs. McCarthy were not in it was a vast improvement. A good story and well played by all the characters.

Decent episode. Exchanges horrible Mrs. McCarthy for horrible Bunty.

This season has been one my favourites until this one. The dull character of Bunty in back and the annoying Mrs. McCarthy is gloriously absent, so a trade off there. (Perhaps no character can replace the indominable and slightly naughty Lady Felicia.)

Other than that, it's a good episode with some fine supporting cast and the usual stellar direction, art design and writing.

Possibly the best episode of the series.

Bunty has to give a talk on deportment to a group of girls at a Borstal, she and Father Brown are embroiled in a murder.

After the semi comedic tone of The Island of Dreams, the series gets back to a more serious tone, this was a great episode, one I thoroughly enjoyed.

It was a relief to have a break from Inspector Mallory, Sergeant Goodfellow stepped into the role beautifully, another absence for Mrs McCarthy.

Wonderful to see Bunty back, I have missed her this series, as always she sports some fantastic outfits, and her presence worked incredibly well in this episode, she naturally felt part of events, not coincidental.

This was a million miles away from the last episode, very gritty, with some real, sincere characters, plus some wonderful acting.

Great episode, 9/10.

Warning: Spoilers
This is kind of like a St. Trinian's episode of Father Brown, which would have been filmed during strict lockdown conditions during the pandemic. That may explain why Sorcha Cusack and Jack Deam were omitted from the cast to have a smaller cast under such unprecedented circumstances.

Anyway, the themes of power, class and wayward girls comes to the fore in this season nine episode. I've really enjoyed catching up with Father Brown during daytime viewing and I'm also enjoying watching the spin-off, The Sister Boniface Mysteries.

Anyway, the greenery and sunshine makes this a must-see episode.

Mostly unenjoyable episode
acfurst23 May 2022
Three things make this episode almost worth seeing: the return of the gorgeous Bunty, the gorgeous red convertible driven by Bunty, and Sgt. Goodfellow being in charge for a change. The rest is tedious. Especially annoying is the character of Brenda; I'm not sure if the actress playing her was trying to be energetic, devilish, or retarded - she comes across as an extremely unappealing combination of all of these, and she's a major character in the episode.

The rest of the story is politically correct drivel. And while Goodfellow gets effusive compliments from Father Brown for his good work, it's actually Father Brown who solves the case (as usual), so the praise seems ingenuine. There's no Mallory, there's no Sid, no Mrs. McCarthy, the writing is poor; this seems like a budget episode. But they do have a nice car or two in it.

Mrs. McCarthy

The episodes are just not good enough without Mrs. McCarthy. She is the glue and I love her relationship with all the other characters, especially Father Brown. Who would ever believe Bunty would be ask to speak to wayward girls. Still not the worst episode but definitely not my favorite. The stories are weak and trying too hard to meet the demands of an agenda.
