Sex & Nudity

  • Heavy rain is more like a movie than a video game. There are two scenes that include sexuality/nudity. A man and a women start to have sex while kissing and unbuckling clothing. The scene fades before anything actually happens. The other scene is where character gets held at gunpoint and forced to remove clothes. You, the player can decide if you do this, or not. Breast nudity is briefly shown before the scene ends.
  • Ethan can flirt with his wife at the start, and she hints at sex
  • Lauren wears a revealing gown at scotts apartment
  • There is a scene of a man taking a shower in which you can see his butt.
  • A man enters a seedy hotel room used for prostitution (the mother of one of the victims) and is asked to leave money on the table before the "act," which they do not commit.
  • A woman takes a shower, we see her breasts and butt, this can be avoided by choosing not to shower.
  • The game contains a prompt-based love scene (kissing and rubbing) in which players match onscreen cues to angle characters' mouths, remove shirts and blouses, unhook bras, and lower to the floor; a woman briefly appears topless amidst the dark shadows and heavy breathing. Actual sex is never depicted as the camera fades to black. The player is able to avoid this scene.
  • A man makes a women striptease at gunpoint. This is not prolonged in any way, and the player can either choose to agree or disagree. If you agree you see a flash of a breast before the scene changes.
  • One scene features the player talking to a man watching a cartoon on TV, two women on the other end of the couch are kissing each other until they're asked to leave.
  • Some female characters wear revealing clothing.

Violence & Gore

  • A few fist fights, but all other violence is implied and lacks any excessive blood or gore.
  • In the dlc of the game, Madison can be killed in number of way, like stabbed, or beaten, but she can kill the killer in graphic ways, the worst one is a chainsaw she uses on his chest
  • All characters can do in multiple ways..Ethan definitely has the worst ones, as they involve him shooting himself, hanging himself if he fails to save his son
  • Players may encounter victims at various crime scenes: a woman (fully clothed) in a bathtub tainted with blood; a child under forensic examination (though the scene is largely narrative and clinical, with no depiction of victim's face or signs of trauma).
  • A woman squirms and screams as she catches on fire.
  • A man impaled in the chest with a power drill.
  • A female attacked in her own home by masked male assailants (the scene is prolonged.)
  • A man is shot in slow-motion by police officers.
  • Blood sometimes accompanies the acts of violence whether triggered or viewed passively.
  • There are also times when the player will get into a scuffle with another character. When this happens certain button segments will appear on the screen that the player must press in the correct order to be successful, otherwise the character might get beat up or worst, even killed.
  • For example, on more than one occasion the player will be faced with the choice of killing someone or letting them live. Whatever the player chooses will affect how the rest of the story goes.
  • There is a dream sequence in which a characters throat is slit.
  • There is another scene where a character encounters a woman who has slit her wrists and must try to save her.
  • The most intense instance of violence occurs during a "lizard trial" sequence in which players' character, Ethan, is forced to chop off a segment of his own finger to save his son's life, several instruments (saw, scissors, knife, etc.) can be used to remove the finger; and though the camera pans away from the actual dismemberment instead the blade, the blood, the scene's pouring focus on Ethan's psychological tenor/terror (the dread deliberation before the cut) may be unnerving for some.

Profanity

  • 47 F-words
  • Several uses of (sh*t, d*mn, c*ap, h*ll)
  • 1 possible use of c**t

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • There are some scenes of drinking alcohol, characters addicted to a fictional drug (in vials)
  • One of the game's sub-plots involves one of the protagonists being addicted to a fictional drug called Triptocaine.
  • White powder that implies cocaine use.
  • Some cigarette smoking.
  • As Ethan, you are able to pull a beer out of your fridge and drink it.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • One of the most depressing games I have ever seen.
  • One of the police officers, Carter Blake, appears to be on the brink of insanity and often breaks police protocol by being excessively violent.
  • Ethan is indirectly forced by the killer to complete five trials to save his son: danger, risk, suffering, murder, and sacrifice. These scenes are all very intense.
  • Ethan's 3rd test involves severing his finger with any kind of sharp object player finds, this whole scene is intense, prolonged, masochist, but nothing is shown. It is all (very heavily) implied.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • There's a scene in which a female character takes a shower and you see her breasts, however at the end of the scene she wakes up and she'd been dreaming.

Violence & Gore

  • One of the endings involves Ethan saving Shaun and opening the warehouse doors, only to be gunned down by the police. Shaun then goes to Ethan's body and burst into tears. Very emotional.
  • There is a scene where the father of the kidnapped victim starts to blackout and sees a vision of his other son who had died from being hit by a car.
  • There's a scene where Ethan's son Jason is crossing the street and they are both struck by a car. We later find out that Jason was killed.
  • If Ethan Mars fails to save Shaun, he'll inevitably commit suicide by hanging or gunshot. One of which is very bloody, all three are unnerving.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The reveal of Scott being the killer is really intense, since the game made you root for him, but he became a killer after his own father couldn't save his brother, so he kidnaps children, and tests their father's
  • The main plot is about a man who kidnaps children and traps them in vents until heavy rain drowns them, while sending their fathers to complete gruesome trials to save them. We later find out that he is trying to find a father who will do anything to save his son, because his own father did not save his brother.
  • If Ethan does not succeed in saving Shaun, he'll shoot or hang himself at the end of the game. Both are violent, and one of the gunshot scenes in particular is very bloody.
