More subdued than the usual, but none the worse for it
Cryptic_constable23 January 2022
This particular episode is much darker than a standard episode as the synopsis suggests. It is certainly a much better episode than most of the series (and indeed the previous ones) with the excessively hammy acting dialled a down to match the subject matter.

The flaws of the episode are much the same as the flaws of the show in general, including an overindulgence on 'deus ex machina' solutions but the emotional responses are much more on point than in a regular episode and the scene in the cottage at the end was surprisingly moving, before it became a little stereotypical for my taste.

Twinning arrangement

Warning: Spoilers
Sorcha Cusack is always convincing as Mrs McCarthy, and a point of trivia is that she is the aunt of Max Irons, the son of Jeremy Irons.

Anyway, the twin aspect here was quite a bit of a shock to the plot, and I never quite saw it coming. The thing is the twins didn't really quite alike at all, but I guess in those days there was no internet or smart phones or polaroid instant cameras to compare faces.

The ending was very moving and emotional. All credit to the cast and crew for filming this episode during the pandemic and raising the morale of Father Brown fans like me when we weren't sure when the pandemic would end.

A classic episode, this was terrific.

Painful wounds are opened up in Kembleford, when a convicted killer strolls back into the village.

This episode, I thought, was outstanding, for me this was the best of the series so far. The trend for a more serious story continues, don't expect Father Brown to be popping up over hedges, or characters dressed up in funny clothes, this is almost a straight laced murder mystery.

The laughs come from Mrs McCarthy and Inspector Mallory, the duo work so well, with Mallory perhaps filling the role of Lady Felicia.

The mystery was engaging, and the outcome came as a big surprise, what was done, was done very well. The ending was very moving.

I would regard this, as one of the show's best, 10/10.

The Requiem for the Dead
Prismark1011 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is slightly darker and less lighthearted.

Mrs McCarthy might be wanting to win the Best Kept Village competition.

The villagers are in uproar when the find that Ned Hannigan has returned to Kembleford. He is a child killer and was sent to prison.

John and Nora Banks whose daughter was murdered and not have been able to bury her. Ned never said where he left the body.

When Ned is found dead in the woods. The Banks are the main suspects. Inspector Mallory arrests Mrs Banks.

Father Brown discovers something very important about Ned. There was an identical twin brother.

Ned did not know where the girl was left, because he did not murder her. His twin did.

That might have important consequences regarding the death of Ned Hannigan.

The twin story is not original in crime mysteries but it is outlandish here.

There is some emotional acting given the subject matter.

Season 9 Episodes Not That Great
AppalachianMountainWriter3 February 2022
The six episodes I've watched of Season 9 are not that great. The story lines are lacking in quality as well as the dialog and acting. Very disappointing. It seems the writers have run out of good ideas.
