Clumsy medieval werewolves
supermellowcali31 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
If this is a good story, I couldn't tell... less than 40 minutes was all I could take. The production is okay but lacked the direction for this kind of movie: action scenes were weak and nonsensical, with werewolf in costumes that looked like zipups scratching as if they're young girls trying to fight while others stand around. This was a demonstration showing that even if you have all the parts, it's not that easy to make a good werewolf movie :)

Just another generic werewolf movie...
paul_haakonsen1 February 2022
Sure, I can't claim that I was harboring much of any high hopes or expectations to this 2021 fantasy horror movie from writer and director Charlie Steeds titled "Werewolf Castle".

Why? Well, first of all I hadn't even heard about the movie prior to sitting down in 2022 to watch it. Secondly then the majority of werewolf-based movies out there tend to be dubious movies. And also the fact that it was all unfamiliar names on the cast list wasn't really all that enticing either.

But still, I opted to watch "Werewolf Castle" on the notion of it being a movie that I hadn't already seen, and also on the off chance that the movie might actually be one of those rare instances where it is actually a great werewolf movie.

Yeah, I hate to say it but "Werewolf Castle" wasn't exactly a particularly thrilling or great movie. Sure, it was watchable for what it was - with that being a rather generic and mediocre werewolf movie. "Werewolf Castle" is the type of movie you watch once, then put it into the pile of shame and never return to it ever again.

Visually then "Werewolf Castle" was a mixed bag of nuts. The idea of the werewolves were good, but it was just so obviously people wearing furred suits and masks. Especially the masks were bad. Well, they looked good actually, but bad in the sense that there was zero articulation on them, so the werewolves wore the same open maw expression all the time.

The acting performances in the movie were so-so. I mean, the actors put on adequate enough performances, but you shouldn't go expecting a grand thespian experience here, if so you will be sorely disappointed.

"Werewolf Castle" lands a very mediocre five out of ten stars from me.

Really???
ejh-016215 May 2022
One of those movies that are so bad you have to watch all of it to see if it gets any better.. It did not. Some of the actors and production was okay but the rest, not so much. The werewolf costumes are just awful. I could buy a better one at a discount Halloween store. When bitten by a wolf one would usually have bite marks, just saying. There is a twist at the end but you realize once it happens that the title of the movie gives it away.. I like some B movies but this one I would not recommend.

Bite Me
nogodnomasters14 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The village of Grittleton Marsh has been devastated by a pack of werewolves. Three Knights are called to go to the King's Castle and inform him of the news so he can do battle against them. Thorfinn (Peter Lofsgard) one of the village survivors agrees to go with them as a guide.

The plot had potential. The acting and costume did not. They could have done more with the haunted forest.

Guide: F-word. Brief sex and butt nudity.

I just don't get it!?
jacko-997725 February 2022
I just don't get it, some moments of half decent production without the storyline...

I'm a Werewolf movie fan, i've watched that many B werewolf movies i've lost count, hoping to find that hidden Gem. I went into this with an open mind, not checking the imdb score as I usually do beforehand. It started off not bad, I was thinking there's some effort been put into the production here at least, but literally after 10mins that hope was quashed with the usual overacting with novice actors and the illogical storyline.

4 stars, simply for the effort put into production and there was moments that were half decent, at least I made it to the end...

You're Not Going to Like the Ending
vanwolfster14 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
In the beginning, the movie had potential, in the middle it devolved into a repetitive story, in the end it had an awful ending.

Special effects were lazily implemented. Bite marks practically doesn't exists, it was more like a rough licking with blood? The costumes look like bargain bin werewolf outfits from a dollar store. The acting was okay for some, but for others it was too terrible and not convincing.

I love werewolf movies, but this one just took a bite out of me. In a bad way.

I might need to re-watch The Howling, Ginger Snaps, something better to wash these memories away. Avoid Werewolf Castle at all costs. This is not a quest you are prepared for.

Waste of Time
haranch4 December 2022
I had never heard of this movie before which probably was a good indication that the movie was not that great. After the first 10 minutes, I debated whether to watch it but decided to watch the whole thing to see if it would get better. The movie is not worth watching:

The plot was very predictable. I guessed what was going to happen before it happened like what was going to happen at the village in the woods, when he reached the castle and the ending. I did not think the story line or acting was that great. A waste of time. Find a better movie to watch. I watched it on Amazon Prime which was included free on my account. Don't waste your money renting or streaming it.

Terribly unwatchable
lbhalos1719 October 2022
DO NOT waste your time watching this. The "heroes" are scumbags, and the ACTUAL hero is wasted. And, a complete fabrication of the hero lie.

This "movie" could've been so great. But, it starts with our "hero" hiding while his village gets sacked by werewolves.

Incredibly, he finds its backbone to show the worthless band of "knights" where the werewolves live.

This ends up being a very average movie because of the werewolf special effects but there are elements worth your time
kevin_robbins11 February 2023
Werewolf Castle (2021) is a United Kingdom 🇬🇧 picture that I watched on Amazon Prime last month. The storyline follows a young man whose entire village is killed by werewolves. He joins a group of mercenaries out to kill the menace plaguing the countryside.

This movie is written and directed by Charlie Steeds (A Werewolf in England) and stars Peter Lofsgard (Vampire Virus), Tim Cartwright (A Werewolf in England), Jake Watkins (Freeze), Derek Nelson (Midnight Peepshow) and Megan Tremethick (Dragon Knight).

If they did a better job with the werewolf costumes and depiction this would be an underrated gem. The settings, attire, circumstances and cinematography are excellent. It reminded me of 13th Warrior in some ways. The kill scenes are very good and contain solid gore. Some sequences are shot a bit too dark, but the overall premise and execution is very good and any flesh consumption scenes are entertaining. The entire cabin scene that sets up the ending was entertaining and a lot of fun. There's a final fight that could have been better but what happens to the main character at the end made me smile.

Overall, this ends up being a very average movie because of the werewolf special effects but there are elements worth your time. I would score this a 5/10 and recommend seeing it once.

Worst werewolf action ever
frolingrentals9 October 2023
This has one of the worst werewolf movies ever. It's just people dressed up in a cheap Halloween costume with no special effects whatsoever and when they attack each other then not even touching each other. It's a bit like watching a 7-year-old school play. How can anyone actually produce this movie without laughing. This is 2023 if I only spent a few thousand dollars on some animation it would have gone a long way. The only thing that was good was the sex scene at the start. It went completely downhill after that. I'm not sure why Amazon would even put this on their movie list as it seems a very d-rated movie with a very small budget.

Decent Low Budget Throwback (2021)
bmjudson6 October 2022
Giving it a Nine to pump up it's rating a tad in response to the naysayers. I enjoyed it, put it in the category of its so bad it's good. I enjoyed the characters, I'll sit through pretty much anything if I'm invested in them. Some will not like the gore, caution, title is Werewolf Castle. It's somewhat reminds me of Monty Python's Flying Circus. That's pretty much all I need to say about this flick though I have another 175 characters to type so just let me leave everyone with this observation, don't leave a 1or 10 rating. These are given mainly by bots. These bots can be human though the majority are automated, similar to the crank calls you receive daily by both phone and text. Please don't be Fooled, always delve deeper and be aware! Thanks.

Just a budget issue
Just finished watching the movie and despite its clear lack of budget I couldn't help but be completely engrossed in the movie. I feel that if they were to remake it with a higher budget it could be massive.

Some redeeming features, but not enough
jason-3692912 August 2023
My main criticism of this film is that almost everything about it is trying its best to stop you suspending your disbelief and enjoy the ride.

The werewolves are the central threat, but their costumes and masks are laughably poor and not at all scary if you're over five years old. The werewolf leader in human form has a ridiculous lisp due to his oversize plastic chompers, and his cheesy villainous monologues are the opposite of terrifying. And there are no actual wolves (or any other animals) in the film.

The supposedly medieval village buildings are obviously modern constructions made of machined wood with perfectly straight lines and right angles everywhere, especially the interiors. The knights wear their perfectly shiny plate armour 24 hours a day. The props, weapons etc. Are all pristine and obviously made with power tools. Whitened teeth, perfect close shaves, clippered haircuts, modern colours in the peasants' clothing, a map apparently made with a computer and a laser printer... the list goes on. The only effort to inject some grime is a bit of burnt cork rubbed on the actors' faces and liberal amounts of red corn syrup daubed and splashed about to represent blood.

If you can forgive and forget the almost constant visual sabotage, then the actual storyline, dialogue and performances are passable, but not great. The actors playing the knights make a decent effort with their dialogue to deliver interesting and distinct characters with fun interpersonal conflicts - these are guys you can root for and I enjoyed their scenes. The young protagonist however is not particularly likeable. For most of the film he is cowardly and ineffectual with no balancing charm or other redeeming features. His main skills seem to be begging for help, sobbing, dropping things and falling over. As for the ending, well it's really not the high point the writer(s) hoped it would be... I'd say cutting the last 15 minutes and leaving us to extrapolate would probably have made the film better, or perhaps just skipping the action scene at the castle and cutting to the final resolution scene would have worked.

On the plus side the sound production is good. The dialogue is always clear, which is an accomplishment with most of the scenes being filmed outdoors. Ambient sounds are used well, as is the almost continuous background music and dynamic musical score which is well synchronised with the action and dramatic dialogue. The photography and editing are pretty good and support the storytelling. The liberal use of daytime outdoor shots and natural daylight is to be commended; too many films of this genre over-rely on gloomy lighting to cover a multitude of sins and the audience experience is worse for it.

Overall, some enjoyable aspects, but I think the main letdowns are the frankly terrible villain(s), the discount werewolf costumes, the multitude of visual anachronisms, the writing of a rather lacklustre protagonist, and the final action scene.

has your basics and wasnt bad at all .......
godinamachine20 September 2022
HEY EVERYBODY ITS ME (4) and today we review ..... an american werewolf in the middle ages ....

now ..i know ... i usually knock hard on films .... and i LOVE werewolf films SO if you make one you better do it right or ill knock it 2 times as hard .......

WELL .... this was done pretty dang good i must say ....so sadly this probably wont be a funny review of me making fun of this film .... sorry folks ....

however lets start out with the problems of the film .......... the were wolves were kind of generic , and that was bad AND good because though it wasnt anything new to look at at least it wasnt a terrible new design that someone thought was a good idea at 2 am in a drunken stupor and then SOMEHOW got it approved all the way to the final film look .... and yea we have all seen those kinds of "re designs" of monsters we know and love lol.... BUT these were pleasantly .....average lol.... so not even "BAD" here .... just not some great new thing either ... now they did kind of have a bit of a cheesyness to them though when it was just the still head / no movement of the jaws /face of the costumes etc when they were going about .... BUT i mean ... over all thats not really a big deal even ... the darker shows cover that nicely but the day shots REALLY let you see that .... so they probably would have benefitted here from doing all nighty nights with the werewolves .... but i commend them for being brave and doing day shots with them ....

now the good stuff .... praise to you all for the idea of doing the midevil timeline .... weve all seen cowboys vs werewolves (a few times now , actually usually prettty decent films also) and sure werewolves in space ...lol.... werewolves in london .... in france ... in my underpants ..... but we dont talk about those ..... so the werewolves have been a round sure ... but midevil times ...i think this was my first time seeing that one , maybe there is others tackling this concept so IF SO ill have to check them out and compare to see how this genre of werewolves works out .... BUUT as of right now ... THIS one rules the kingdom ........

its a sold film, sounds great, the foley is good, the lighting good, the acting was actually better than expected .... i DID think the king felt a little flat , but everyone else i really enjoyed ......the FX were good .... story was basic over all but not without merit i mean you cant expect a HUHE crazy story plot and alll sorts of stuff here , its a really straight forward type film and that makes it work .... you know what your getting , a good solid action fantasy / monster horror flick.. and thats cool ... literally all it was missing was a wizard and you would have had a D&D campaign lol...

BUT im glad it DID NOT have a wizard because that would have made it terribly cheesy and not work ...as it stands its a solid film ...

8/10.

Sir Thorfinn Lives! Kind of...
lorddrewsus16 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Frodo Potter makes the quest to become the white Blade of werewolves. Twists and turn and pretty cool FX. In the end he becomes canonized in a pretty brutal way. Sir Thorfinn! Our savior.

Rough around the edges but endearing
uhohspaghettitoes15 April 2024
This is obviously a low budget film, I mean I had to pause the movie and laugh because of the werewolf costumes and the 'hanging body' in the forest BUT. I can tell that these people are passionate about this movie, the atmosphere, costuming (besides the werewolves lol), and acting is pretty damn good. I was fully immersed when the werewolves weren't on screen and loved the obvious joy behind the film.

There were definitely some cringe scenes, but the characters are so well thought out and played that I could look past it.

I mean there aren't many medieval werewolf thrillers out there so I may be biased. I will say, if you're looking for a horror movie, this is definitely not it. Enjoyable fantasy action however!

IT DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR....
bowiebob2 October 2022
If you are looking for a horror movie to tingle you, this isn't it. If you want to see a fairy tale type fantasy of good vs evil, this is great! The werewolves aren't about horror, they are just about evil and it's attempt to take control of a kingdom. You have to view it a s "A Princess Bride" on steroids. If that is your mood, you will find it a fun fantasy tale and overall enjoyable. The "Howling" it is not.......best enjoyed in a 'relaxed state of mind. There is an atrocity, followed by a quest, add some growing up of a young boy into a man, a good soundtrack, some pitiful but fantasy werewolves. The eternal battle of good vs evil, and there you have it! A "fun" movie. No reason to try and take it to serious, just laugh at some parts , be startled by some scenes, and accept this as a fantasy adventure, not a horror" movie. That all said, yes I liked it!

Medieval fantasy
colbertadrian28 September 2022
The medieval setting was perfect for this genre of films, they could've added some other medieval mythical creatures to go along with the werewolves, like running into some fairies in the woods, or elves and maybe a troll to cross a bridge or something, but obviously the budget was really low, these "warriors" didn't even have horses, don't remember seeing any animals in this film, which is odd given the medieval setting, usually in these types of movies there are always chickens and pigs running around with sausage links hanging from poles and lots of vegetables and eggs seen everywhere, so to distract from lack of background settings they get right to the action, they do have the usual band of medieval character tropes , good one time watch.
