Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot’s “Wonder Woman” reunion will have to wait.
Jenkins has relinquished directing duties for “Cleopatra,” a historical drama featuring Gadot as the legendary queen of Egypt. Kari Skogland, who recently directed Marvel’s TV series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” is taking over filmmaking duties.
Jenkins isn’t departing the project entirely. She will remain involved in a producing role as she pivots attention to her next two projects, “Wonder Woman 3” for Warner Bros. and “Star Wars: Rogue Squadron” for Disney and Lucasfilm.
Paramount Pictures is backing “Cleopatra,” which remains in development stages at the studio. Paramount won the rights to the project last year, reportedly beating out Apple, Universal, Warner Bros. and Netflix.
Skogland first came to attention with independent films such as “The Size of Watermelons” and “Men With Guns,” and went on to direct the 2008 crime thriller “Fifty Dead Men Walking,...

Exclusive: Kari Skogland has been set to direct the six-part Disney+ miniseries The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, with Avengers: Endgame‘s Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan starring. Sources said Captain America: Civil War‘s Daniel Bruhl and Emily Van Camp are also in talks to join. The miniseries will air in August 2020.
I’d heard that Mackie’s accepting the shield from Captain America at the end of Avengers: Endgame will figure into the miniseries, but the studio had no comment on where it goes.
Bruhl played Zemo in Captain America: Civil War, the mastermind who drove a wedge between Captain America and Iron Man that factored into the Avengers films, and the murderer of Black Panther’s father. Malcolm Spellman (Empire) has been writing.

With movies like the revenge-via-circular-saw High Tension and the skin-shredding Piranha remake, director Alexandre Aja has memorably dunked his characters in the blood bucket. But Aja’s next project, an adaptation of The 9th Life of Louis Drax, is more a supernatural thriller than a blood-and-bones picture, and principal photography on the film has now begun.

History is making another addition to its original programming with an order for a new miniseries, Sons of Liberty. Hot off the continued success of Vikings, and the critical acclaim of other miniseries efforts (like The Bible and Hatfields & McCoys), the network now aims at what looks like a pretty interesting take on the lives of the biggest names of the American Revolution.
It seems as though we’re going for a “no really, they were just actual people,” approach to things, apparently trying to show that these were real men, with real lives and real problems, who threw themselves into something, probably far beyond their expectations. That could be a story worth telling, and there are some great cast members involved. Following on from the worldwide success of both Blood and Sand and prequel Gods of the Arena, Spartacus returns to Sky 1 and Sky 1 HD with the highly anticipated sequel Spartacus: Vengeance, later this month.
Australian actor Liam McIntyre (Rush, Neighbours, The Pacific) has stepped into the title role, following the death of actor Andy Whitfield last year, whilst Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess) returns as Lucretia to remind viewers that hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. This series promises to be even more gory and gratuitous than before – picking up where the first series left off, on the heels of the bloody escape from the House of Batiatus, Vengeance joins the gladiator rebellion as it gains momentum, striking fear into the heart of the Roman Republic.

It's midnight and Jim Sturgess has just finished shooting scenes for his upcoming drama Ashes, when he calls from London, England. The 30-year-old star of films like The Other Boleyn Girl, Fifty Dead Men Walking and 21 is in a car en route to his home in Camden, a London suburb, when he reveals he never thought he’d become an actor. In fact, he dreamed of being something else entirely.
"I was in a band and was convinced that I'd be in it for the rest of my life," he says. "Then the rest of the members went off to university and I thought, 'Damn, what am I going to do now?'" Unsure of his next step, Sturgess took a media course which inspired him to write and perform a one-man play. A comment from an audience member after the show would be the catalyst that set his acting career in motion.

Jim Sturgess has been here before.
The first time was in 2007, when Beatles musical "Across the Universe" catapulted him to the spotlight. Then in 2008, Sturgess co-starred in "The Other Boleyn Girl" and starred in "21," both of which enjoyed box office success.
Do you remember his name? If you do, you're in the minority, because all three times the British actor has quickly slipped out of the embrace of Hollywood stardom. Perhaps it's because he morphs into different roles so effortlessly, we can't even remember who he is beyond a "I know that guy!"
Three years since his last "big" role Sturgess is back in the same place, starring in a major motion picture, this time opposite Anne Hathaway in "One Day," a romantic tragicomedy that opens Friday.

Jim Sturgess learned to survive the wild for Peter Weir's latest film The Way Back, but don't ask him to dangle upside down
You need only look at what An Education did for an unknown Carey Mulligan to see where Jim Sturgess might be headed. In 2011 he stars in the new film from Lone Scherfig, director of An Education. One Day is already being talked-up as a dead cert repeat of the award-magnet formula: adaptation of a smart, funny, much-loved Brit lit (in this case, David Nicholls's novel), with a star-making turn by a box-fresh young English actor. It's just one of a handful of top-drawer films Sturgess has trickling out: next up is the Boxing Day biggie, The Way Back, in which he lines up alongside Ed Harris and Colin Farrell as prisoners breaking out of a Russian gulag during the second world war.

Last Wednesday, I met for a half-hour at New York City’s Cooper Square Hotel with the 29-year-old British actor Jim Sturgess, a charming, understated guy who is widely regarded as one of the most promising actors of his generation. Sturgess, who first caught Hollywood’s attention in Julie Taymor’s movie-musical “Across the Universe” (2007) and then headlined Robert Luketic’s box-office hit “21” (2008), is now earning rave reviews — and even some best actor Oscar buzz — for his performance Peter Weir’s epic period piece “The Way Back” (Newmarket, 12/29, PG-13, trailer) in which he plays Janusz, a young man from Poland imprisoned in a Siberian gulag during World War II who helps to organize a prison break and then leads his fellow escapees (including characters played by Colin Farrell and Ed Harris) on an unlikely quest for freedom.

A world away from the overblown, star vehicles of the nineties, the likes of Patriot Games, The Devils Own, and Blown Away, 2008 saw a rash of small, intimate dramas about "The Troubles" - the innocuous sounding name given to the period of ethnic violence surrounding Northern Ireland, circa late 1960's to late 1990's, during which some 3500 people were killed. Prison drama Hunger showcased the staggering levels of self-destruction people were prepared to commit to in service to ideology, Fifty Dead Men Walking explored the conflicted loyalty and paranoia of an undercover operative, and here Five Minutes of Heaven, easily the simplest of the three and yet the most ambitious, charts the cyclical nature of violence and our struggle to break free from it.

Yesterday, the Genie Awards, Canada's equivalent of the Oscars for those who don't know, were handed out. This year, Polytechnique dominated the Genie Awards and even took the award for Best Motion Picture. However, the presentation of the award on TV and on webcast was too short. Besides, it wasn't a live presentation and not all the awards were shows on TV/webcast. Second Besides: When will a TV network (and not some cable network that few Canadians have) broadcast the Genie Awards? Anyway, without further ado, here's the presentation of the winners.

London -- Kari Skogland is lined up to direct "Beslan," a movie based on the infamous school siege in North Ossetia, Russia, in 2004.
Skogland, who shot to prominence with Ira drama "Fifty Dead Men Walking," is set to direct from a script penned by James W. Mitchell.
The movie is being produced by U.K. based production banner Firefly and is based on the 2004 incident that saw armed terrorists take over 1,300 men, women and children hostage at School Number One. Three hundred were killed by the end of the siege.
Produced by Firefly's Matthew Hobbs the project is scheduled to shoot in the fall in Eastern Europe, Hobbs said.
Skogland is repped by Wme and Ralph Zimmerman.

They all say this show changed a little bit, but we guess it was expected for the 25th annual ceremony from Stapless Center, or if you prefer – the Spirit Awards.
Last week we were all occupied with Oscar, but it’s always the right time to take a look at (maybe) less popular ceremony, but still – the good one! We’re going to remind you of this ceremony highlights.
The Spirits, run by the nonprofit Film Independent, threw in some of its typically enjoyable ironic touches.
One of them was definitely David Spade who presented the best foreign award, starting with:
“You may not know this, but my movies play in other countries. They’re huge in Poland. I can’t set foot in Bulgaria.” Thanks for letting us know Spade!
On the other hand, we had a chance to see Ben Stiller, known for studio comedies more than any boutique film,...

While clearly not as closely followed as the Guild Awards, let alone the Golden Globes, the Independent Spirit Awards casts a much wider net in terms of nominees by accepting any film that is screened at various festivals, even if it's not released in theatres. It does, however, limit the film's budget to $20 million.

Film Independent's Spirit Awards marked their 25th anniversary this year and shook things up by trading their afternoon beachside luncheon for a nighttime party downtown. The show was hosted by comedian Eddie Izzard and a handful of the actors who attended and presented were Jeremy Renner ("The Hurt Locker"), Maggie Gyllenhaal ("Crazy Heart"), Carey Mulligan ("An Education") and Vera Farmiga ("Up in the Air"). Best Actor winner Jeff Bridges performed a song from his film "Crazy Heart" with Oscar-nominated songwriters T Bone Burnett and Ryan Bingham. The rock band Anvil whose career was chronicled in the independent film "Anvil: The Story of Anvil" also performed live and took home Best Documentary.
The Spirit Awards have supported and rewarded independent films throughout the years and MakingOf is proud to have interviewed many of this year's nominees and winners. I've included the full list of nominated films and talent below along with links to our exclusive interviews.

I haven't talked about them since announcing the nominees back in December 2009, but tomorrow night, March 5, Film Independent will hold the 25th Annual Spirit Awards at La Live's panoramic event deck in downtown Los Angeles. The show will air live and uncut at 8:00 p.m. Pst/11:00 p.m. Est on IFC (Independent Film Channel).

What is somewhat odd is how Canada's most internationally celebrated film in I Killed My Mother (J'ai tue ma mere) from Xavier Dolan receive not one single vote, a crime when you consider the textured writing, fluid cinematography and the brilliant performance from Anne Dorval - who plays the neurotic mother...

Oscar-winning British actor-filmmaker Ben Kingsley is all praise for Indian women directors Nandita Das and Leena Yadav. But he now wants to make his own film in India instead of doing more Bollywood movies.
"I'd like to make a film of my own in India, (but) you are not going to see me in a mainstream Bollywood film," Kingsley, 66, who stars as a mathematical genius in Yadav's "Teen Patti", told Ians over phone from London.
"I do intend to hopefully produce and star in my own film in India. We are having some progress on that. Rather than creating offers, I am creating my own work in India which to me is very satisfying," he added.
Drawing a similarity between director Yadav and Lord Attenborough whose film "Gandhi" was based in India and fetched Kingsley an Oscar, he said: "All good directors have one particular quality in common.
