Several months ago, word leaked out that Maggie Gyllenhaal was set to write and direct a film called The Bride!, a new take on the concept of the 1935 classic The Bride of Frankenstein (watch it Here). Once thought to be set up at the Netflix streaming service, this one is actually happening at Warner Bros., and the studio has set the film for a theatrical release, IMAX screens included, on October 3, 2025. Gyllenhaal has assembled a strong cast for the film that includes Penelope Cruz, Annette Bening, Peter Sarsgaard, and Julianne Hough, with Jessie Buckley as The Bride and Christian Bale as Frankenstein’s Monster. Now Deadline reports that John Magaro (Past Lives) and Jeannie Berlin (You Hurt My Feelings) are also in the cast, but no details have been revealed about the characters they’re playing.

Exclusive: Skydance Sports has closed a deal with Gary Ross to rewrite and direct Old Time Hockey, from an original screenplay written by Kevin Jakubowski. The film will be produced by Skydance Sports and Jeremy Latcham.
The original screenplay is set in the rust belt of Pennsylvania involving a high school hockey rivalry from the mid-’90s that gets re-kindled 25 years later.
Ross is no stranger to uplifting sports movies as he directed and wrote the hit horse racing pic Seabiscuit, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. The four-time Oscar nominee has made a career out of writing and directing hit pics that include Pleasantville, The Hunger Games, and most recently Ocean’s 8 starring Sandra Bullock.
Jakubowski wrote the Black List feature screenplay 8-Bit Christmas which received both a PGA Award and Humanitas Prize nomination. His other credits include the screenplay for Assassination of a High School President,...

Signora Volpe is poised to be another breakout hit for Acorn TV.
The streaming service today revealed the official trailer and premiere date for the three-part detective drama series starring Emilia Fox.
The series was filmed on location in the stunning Lazio and Umbria regions in Italy, and will make its debut Monday, May 2, on Acorn TV, AMC Networks’ acclaimed streamer devoted to British and international television.
Episodes will continue to debut on Mondays through May 16.
"To the casual observer, there’s nothing remarkable about Sylvia Fox (Fox) - an intelligent, confident woman in her forties, she tends to keep quiet about her formidable linguistic abilities, impressive knowledge of weaponry, and skills as a markswoman," reads the official description of the series.
"Questions about her professional life are met with bland answers about an unspectacular career in the Civil Service."
"Which is only very slightly true – because until recently, Sylvia was a high-ranking British spy.

After a six-year hiatus, Korean cinema is set to return to the Chinese big screen in wide release at last.
This Friday, Dec. 3, Chinese cinemas will run the 2020 comedy “Oh! My Gran (Oh! Moon-Hee),” official posters said Wednesday. Directed by Jeong Se-Gyo and written by Kim Soo-jin, the title stars Na Moon-hee as Moon-hee, the titular spirited grandma suffering from Alzheimer’s disease who, along with her dog, are the only witnesses of a hit-and-run accident that leaves her grandchild unconscious. The film tells the story of the sleuthing that ensues when she remembers a clue to the culprit.
When Seoul deployed the Thaad U.S. missile defense system in 2016, Beijing expressed its displeasure with a ban on Korean film and culture imports. A Korean film hasn’t had a proper theatrical outing in the mainland since 2015’s “The Assassination,” co-written and directed by Choi Dong-hoon.

It’s been so long since FX’s American Crime Story debuted (Obama was still president!) that it’s easy to forget how much trepidation surrounded that first season, The People v. O.J. Simpson. The O.J. trial was a circus at the time it unfolded. Producer Ryan Murphy’s track record seemed even more fragile in 2016 than it does now, circa the death rattle of Glee and misfires like Scream Queens. And the casting felt odd in so many places: David Schwimmer as Kim Kardashian’s dad? John Travolta...

For the second season of FX’s American Crime Story franchise, Tom Rob Smith used a reverse-chronological structure to trace Andrew Cunanan’s Talented Mr. Ripley-style journey from con artist with identity issues to road-tripping murderer. It was a framing device that didn’t always feel organic, but it yielded unexpected emotional rewards as the series progressed, aided tremendously by Darren Criss’ lacerating performance.
It’s impossible to know if writer Richard Warlow took inspiration from The Assassination of Gianni Versace; maybe it’s a complete coincidence that he approached the menacing tale of ’70s serial killer Charles Sobhraj as a Talented ...

Shakespearean Transformer Olivier Megaton is back with a brand new actioner. The Versailles-born director of Taken 2 and Taken 3 will bring his latest cars-and-shooting movie to Netflix in June, and the streaming service has just released a first trailer for it.
The Last Days of American Crime is based on the 2009 Rick Remender and Greg Tocchini graphic novel, and has been adapted for the screen by Oblivion scribe Karl Gajdusek. It’s got a decent cast, too – The Assassination of Gianni Versace‘s Edgar Ramírez leads the pack alongside Anna Brewster (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) with a surprising appearance from Boardwalk Empire‘s Michael Pitt, who appears to be firing on all cylinders at Full Michael Pitt. That just so happens to be our favorite level of Michael Pitt, so we’ll probably have to check this one out.

Fox has cast Vincent Piazza in its upcoming drama pilot “The Cleaning Lady.”
He joins previously announced series lead Shannyn Sossamon and fellow cast member Ginger Gonzaga. Based on the Argentine series “La Chica Que Limpia,” the show follows Reyna Salonga (Sossamon), a whip-smart Filipina doctor who comes to the U.S. in hopes to get a medical treatment for her critically ill son. But when the system fails and pushes her into hiding, she becomes an on-call cleaning lady for the mob. Willing to do anything to save her son, Reyna walks the tightrope of morality, breaking the law for all the right reasons — and eventually forges her own path in the criminal underworld.
Piazza will star as Gavin Ross. A recently promoted analyst, FBI Special Agent Gavin Ross is described as intelligent, compassionate and astute, always looking for new angles to see beyond the obvious and look below the surface.

"What kind of moron stops at roadside attractions when we're on the run?" "I just want everyone to have a good time." Freestyle Releasing has debuted an official trailer for an indie crime comedy titled Better Start Running, which premiered at the Newport Beach Film Festival this year. This is the latest film from director Brett Simon, who made one of my favorite underrated indie films - Assassination of a High School President in 2008 (read my original review here). Better Start Running is about an ordinary store clerk and a group of misfits who end up on the run driving around without anywhere to go. Alex Sharp stars, with Analeigh Tipton, Jeremy Irons, Edi Gathegi, plus Maria Bello and Karan Soni. This looks totally awkward and not that original. Could be good, could be bad, the footage isn't great. Maybe the film is better. Here's the first official trailer (+ posters...

Filmmaker Quinn Shephard didn’t go to film school — instead, she made her own. The New Jersey native was just 15 when she came up with the idea for what would become her feature directorial debut “Blame,” a modern high school-set take on Arthur Miller’s classic play “The Crucible.” Seven years later, Shephard is at the Tribeca Film Festival with the film, one that she not only stars in, but also wrote, directed, edited and produced. At 21, she’s reached a benchmark that usually filmmakers a few more years of work.
The film follows Shephard as high school outcast Abigail Grey, who returns to high school after a mysterious incident the year before, only to form a taboo bond with her new drama teacher (Chris Messina). As their relationship blossoms in very unexpected ways, Abigail’s nemesis Melissa (Nadia Alexander) observes from afar, continually threatening to bust the entire situation wide open (a witch hunt?...

Outside of Quentin Tarantino, it seems like no one is really attempting to do Westerns anymore. This week, one does hit in the remake of The Magnificent Seven. This film, the latest take on the material, seeks to not just follow in those footsteps, but in Tarantino’s as well, echoing Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight in the process. Aside from remakes like 3:10 to Yuma, you have to look far and wide to find other Westerns these days, with the last memorable one perhaps being The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Come Friday though, Antoine Fuqua seeks to give you all another one to love. This remake, which is not only a remake of The Magnificent Seven film of the same name, but also Seven Samurai, is an action Western. Here, when a town is being terrorized by a land thief (Peter Sarsgaard), they...

Fox is quickly moving forward with casting its eagerly anticipated series Gotham. This weekend, The O.C. and Southland star Ben McKenzie landed the role of James Gordon, prompting numerous jokes of a young Commissioner pushing off baddies by yelling, “Welcome to the G.C., bitch!” Now, four more (and relatively unknown) actors are joining the series’ principal cast. Most notably, Sean Pertwee (pictured above) is on board as Alfred, the trusted Wayne family butler, and Robin Lord Taylor will fill the shoes of Oswald Cobblepot, better known as The Penguin.
Sean Pertwee has quite a history, touring with the Royal Shakespeare Company back in the 1980s before turning in work as a gruff character actor in sci-fi flicks like Event Horizon, Soldier and Equilibrium. Recently, Pertwee lent his voice to video games Killzone, Fable II and their respective sequels. According to Variety, Pertwee’s Alfred Pennyworth will be “fiercely protective...

Boy, that cover is misleading. Full disclosure: The Assassination – originally Assassination of a High School President - isn’t a Bruce Willis actioner, he gets about ten minutes of screentime and the gun on the DVD is the only one in the film. It doesn’t actually fire bullets. But I suppose that’s the kind of marketing you can expect from a movie that bowed at festivals in 2008 and is only just getting a home video release.

Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer star as the heads of the Manzoni family, a notorious mafia clan, that is relocated to Normandy, France under the witness protection program. Their two children are played by Dianna Agron ("Glee") and Joseph Perrino (Assassination of a High School President), both seen on the "family" poster. The last time we checked in on Taken 2, it was just a couple of weeks ago, when Rade Sherbedgia was cast as the villain. Now the good guys have one more face among their ranks as Luke Grimes has sealed a deal to join the film.
This sequel to the 2008 thriller finds Liam Neeson's retired CIA agent Bryan Mills in even more deep water when he and his ex-wife (Famke Janssen) are themselves held hostage by the dad (Sherbedgia) of one of the bad guys killed in that go-around. Looking to take revenge for his son's death at Mills' hands, he threatens to murderlise the couple.
So this time it's the turn of their daughter Kim (Maggie Grace) to somehow pull off a rescue attempt. Well, it's the least she could do after her dad saved her. Grimes is aboard to play her boyfriend, who gets roped into the mission.

The relationship between music videos and short films has been a mixture of artistic seduction and corporate commercialism since the 80s, with many of today’s top helmers having famously kicked things off in the music video medium – David Fincher (Madonna, Nine Inch Nails, The Rolling Stones), Spike Jonze (Sonic Youth, Beastie Boys, Daft Punk), Michel Gondry (The White Stripes, Paul McCartney, Björk) to name three of the best.
For innovations in the field, The Los Angeles Film Festival (June 16-26) does a great job of blending the formats with guest musical artists curating part of their line-up, and special attention to programming internationally-sourced music videos alongside more traditional fare.
Following the Danger Mouse/Sparklehorse collaboration with David Lynch on last year’s photography & music project “Dark Night of the Soul,” comes news of Danger Mouse’s latest effort,...

[1] Magnolia Pictures has released the first movie trailer for Max Winkler's feature directorial debut Ceremony. I saw the film at the Toronto Film Festival [2], where I wrote the following: "Ceremony feels like the first movie from a filmmaker we need to watch -- a fantastic feature debut. His screenplay is filled with complex, interesting and engrossing characters, and his film has fantastic performances across the board." Ceremony stars the very underrated Michael Angarano (Almost Famous, Snow Angels) as an aspiring children's book author named Sam Davis, who convinces his former best friend Marshall (played by the also underrated Reece Thompson of Rocket Science and Assassination of a High School President) to spend a weekend with him to re-establish their friendship. But Sam has secret ulterior motives -- he plans to infiltrate and break-up a wedding ceremony being held at a big Gatsby-esque-sized beach house in Long Island because he...

Magnolia Pictures has released a movie poster for Max Winkler's feature directorial debut Ceremony, which premiered at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival. Check it out right now after the jump. I heard the movie trailer will hit in the next couple days -- so stay tuned for that. [1] Poster thanks to IMPAwards [2]. The 27-year old USC film school graduate and son of television actor Henry Winkler (Fonzie on Happy Days) is probably best known as the director of the popular Clark and Michael web series which starred Michael Cera and Clark Duke. In 2005, he co-wrote and co-directed a short film titled The King of Central Park, which screened at the Tribeca Film Festival, Malibu International Film Festival and Santa Barbara International Film Festival. The short is wonderfully awkward, sometimes Wes Anderson-like, especially in the music, use of slow motion and symmetrical framing. Ceremony stars the very underrated Michael Angarano (Almost Famous,...

It's that time again! As soon as 2010 came to an end and 2011 kicked off, a whole slew of new titles dropped onto Netflix Instant - so let's get into it. From Best Picture nominees like An Education to winners like Platoon, there's plenty for awards lovers. If you're looking for low-key indie gems you'll want to bask in the glory of Assassination of a High School President or Exam. Or maybe you'll just want to enjoy some classics like 2001: A Space Odyssey or catch up on potential 2010 Oscar nominees like Shutter Island. This time there is something for everyone and plenty to keep you entertained. So what's new in our queue? Shutter Island (Available Now): Though it didn't quite make my Top 10 of 2010, this Martin Scorsese film starring Leonardo DiCaprio was still a great piece of cinema last year. Though it's not the most unpredictable of ...

We haven't made an entry into our Underappreciated Gems series in quite some time, and we've had a lot of requests for more coverage of Netflix Instant, so I thought we'd combine the two and come up with a new round of Underappreciated Gems currently available on Netflix Instant.
The criteria for an Underappreciated Gem remains as it always does: A movie that didn't make at least $10 million at the box office. I doubt many of these films, from the last three years, even crossed the $2 million mark. But that doesn't make them any less worthy.
Links go to the Netflix page.
8: The Mormon Proposition: 8: The Mormon Proposition is a stirring, tragically depressing documentary about the Mormon Church's massive efforts to support and pass California's Proposition 8 ballot initiative (also called the California Marriage Protection Act), which in 2008 redefined marriage in the state of California as being only between a man and a woman,...

David Chase has gotten the band together, and it's turned into a reunion tour.
The writer-director has been on a nationwide search for young, relative unknowns to star in his untitled rock 'n' roll coming-of-age film, and he's found them in John Magaro, Jack Huston and Will Brill. But he's also brought aboard his old "Sopranos" actor, guitarist Steven Van Zandt, to supervise the music for the film and executive produce.
The music-driven project, which will be Chase's feature directing debut, follows a group of suburban New Jersey guys making their way during the 1960s as a rock band called the Twilight Zones. Shooting is scheduled to begin in January in New York.
Paramount Vantage will release the film, which Chase is producing with Mark Johnson ("Rain Man").
"I am thrilled to be working with Steven again, especially on this particular subject," Chase said. "It's not just that we both...

Max Winkler, known for his work on one of my favorite web series Clark and Michael, premiered his debut feature at Tiff this year. The comedy/drama Ceremony stars Michael Angarano (Snow Angels, Gentleman Broncos), Uma Thurman (Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction), and Reece Thompson (Rocket Science, Assassination of a High School President).
Sam David (Angarano) is planning a weekend trip with his best friend, who hasn’t talked with for over a year, Marshall (Thompson). When they get to their vacation location, the truth comes out that Sam actually planned the whole trip to get closer to an ex-girlfriend who is getting married that weekend, Zoe (Thurman).
Right off the bat, Winkler sets a very hyper-realistic tone. The dialogue is a little too perfect and Sam is a character that acts way older than he is. Once one gets used to the style, the film really gets in a groove...

Another film I'm keeping a close eye on at the Toronto Film Festival is Ceremony. It's the feature debut of Max Winkler, son of Henry Winkler, who wrote the script and directed a cast including Michael Angarano (Forbidden Kingdom), Reece Thompson (Assassination of a High School President), Lee Pace (The Fall) & Uma Thurman. It's a comedy about two friends, one of whom falls for an older woman about to be married. Sam (Angarano) drags Marshall (Thompson) out to a beach town in hopes of breaking up the wedding, but they soon realize how out of place they are amongst the British groom and his guests. Three photos below. Ceremony has a score from Fruitbats singer Eric D. Johnson as well as other great songs on the soundtrack. In the lower two photos, you can see Max Winkler directing various shots, while the top one is an actual still. While this...

We've been following Calvo for some time now. We first broke news on his planned flick Snow White which went wide, but that was shelved for the time being and he shot another part of his "gothic mental illness trilogy" called The Melancholy Fantastic which I saw the trailer for over a month ago, and they finally decided to drop it today and we got the first heads up. I had some input on the trailer, so naturally I'm biased, but I like the whole idea from beginning to end and can't wait to see it.
Against the objections of a life-size doll, a delusional young girl falls for an alluring Goth in this unconventional psychological holiday thriller.
Tmf stars Amy Crowdis, Robin Taylor (Assassination of a High School President), Josh Caras and Geneva Carr.

Set of Captain America: The First Avenger
Photo: The Media Club Kicking off today's roundup are some pictures gathered by The Media Club showing off the set of Captain America: The First Avenger taken in Bourne Woods in Farnham, Surrey. I've included two of the images directly above, but you can get all three in higher resolution right here.
Remaining with the superhero news angle, it seems like every other day there is a new cast member joining X-Men: First Class. Today, I have four more names to add to the list (well, three considering one is a replacement).
First, 10-year-old actress Morgan Lily (right) is on board as the younger version of Jennifer Lawrence's (Winter's Bone) Mystique. If you remember, Mystique (played by Rebecca Romijn) mentioned in Bryan Singer's first X-Men movie she was afraid to go to school as a child, so it appears this scenario...

Having been together with her new boyfriend for about a month, Mischa Barton seems to be ready to spice up the romance even more. Daily Mail has come up with a report that the Marissa Cooper of "The O.C." has been spotted making a trip to erotic bondage boutique Coco le Mer on Saturday, August 7.
The 24-year-old make the raunchy shopping trip before heading back to her London hotel and didn't go solo. She was, at the time, accompanied by DJ Ali Love, her new man whose real name is Alexander McLovan. During the outing, the TV actress was spotted wearing funky white t-shirt with studded black jacket and pairing them with red trousers.
Mischa, who has been linked previously to the likes of Luke Pritchard and Johnny Borrell, went public with her romance with 28-year-old Ali at Lovebox festival in London last month. She was recently reported to be thinking of quitting Hollywood.

Her father can say that he has been in an Oscar-winning film called Precious, but I'd say Zoë Kravitz definitely has a leg up on her musician father when it comes to acting. Slowly building her career with bit, supporting parts in No Reservations, The Brave One and indie films Assassination of a High School President, Birds of America and The Greatest, this indiegrrl actress is looking towards a very bright future. I remember her mother Lisa Bonet being notoriously slammed for her part in an Alan Parker film - I hope she's vicariously claiming victory with her daughter's ascension up the ranks. 2010 sees Kravitz beef up in the role departments. She began the year in Sundance preeming Twelve, showed up at Tribeca with Beware the Gonzo, got a sweet part in Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden's It's Kind of a Funny Story which is poised to appear at some major festival this fall,...

These days, it feels like every major city — and more than a few minor ones — has its own film festival. But few can approach the credibility, level of quality and star-studded pleasure of the annual Tribeca Film Festival, which once again kicks off in the heart of New York City this week. When we recently sat down for an interview with co-founder Robert De Niro, he was as excited for the new crop of films as we are.
"I'm very happy that we've managed to make it work and it be a success, and I'm very happy," explained the Oscar-winning screen legend. "I hope it goes down for a long time — a lot longer than I'm around. That would be great. [I hope it becomes] part...

Zach Roerig may not play a vampire on The Vampire Diaries (TV), but he's still got a role he can sink his teeth into. The actor co-stars on the hit CW series as Matt, the lifelong pal and ex-boyfriend of Elena (Nina Dobrev). She, of course, is the seemingly average teen who's currently caught between two vampires, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder). Audiences may also remember Roerig -- who is 25 years old and hails from Ohio -- from some of his earlier work, which includes a stint on the soap opera As the World Turns (TV), the recurring role of Cash on Friday Night Lights (TV), and the indie film Assassination of a High School President (2009). TVStar recently had a chance to catch up with Roerig for an exclusive interview during which he talked about what sets The Vampire Diaries (TV) apart from True Blood (TV) and Twilight...

Zac Efron may be the name you know from "High School Musical," but that's not how things are going to be for much longer if he has his way. He's been pursuing more serious work recently, with "Me and Orson Welles" and the upcoming "Charlie St. Cloud" from "17 Again" director Burr Steers. Next up: another pair of projects in which it's safe to guess that he will neither sing nor dance.
Deadline Hollywood has the scoop that Efron is all set up with Warner Bros for both. First up is an adaptation of "Fire," a Brian Michael Bendis-penned "spy graphic novel" published by Image Comics. You can find all of the details on that over at MTV Splash Page.
The other one sounds kind of wacky. It's actually a combination of two projects, which will come together into something that is being described as...

Stunning stills for the first in A.D. Calvo's gothic mental illness trilogy The Melancholy Fantastic
Back when we first reported on Calvo's planned Lynchian Snow White adaptation, the news went far and wide, ending up on the AP wire. In the meantime, funding came through for The Melancholy Fantastic, the first in a trilogy of films "featuring a strong female lead character suffering from mental illness", which started shooting this past weekend, and now, we have the first incredible looking stills to show you. What's it about? Something wholly fantastic. Read on.
Against the objections of a life-size paper doll, a delusional young woman falls for a Goth in this unconventional holiday story. The Melancholy Fantastic weaves elements of classical existentialism into a disturbing psychological holiday thriller.
Tmf stars Amy Crowdis, Robin Taylor (Assassination of a High School President), Josh Caras and Geneva Carr.

Can the media alter the public's perception of an actor? I believe so - that's why we have the likes of Megan Fox hugging the headlines and getting the covers of men's magazines, while a lot of more talented young actresses could not even manage to get featured and have interviews. If you think about it, what has she done in the movies to deserve so much publicity and attention? - - -
- - - Some may argue, 'hey, don't blame her, she's just good at playing the Hollywood game, and she got a shrewd agent managing her career!'. That maybe so and yes, I agree when others say 'she'll not last another year - others will soon take over'. There are those who may say 'Agents and talent managers always take care of their wards - that's why stars have a public image and a private one'.
