SPECIAL...I don't think so
Nightmare-Maker1 August 2008
Myself and a couple of pals watched this last night (after my mate going on about this for a year or so), and I gotta tell ya this is shite.

First off I read on IMDb this was FUNNY, GORY and WELL MADE..you've got to be joking!!! It had maybe two funny moments in it, gore...well there is blood and some intestines, but thats about it, acting is almost embarrassing, these people trying to act out retarded people...not one actor even comes across as retarded, just painfully bad acting.

One line someone says "YOU EVER RODE A ZOMBIE HORSE", I'm thinking this could be quite cool, expecting it to happen...It doesn't! Obviously people out there DO actually like even love this film, but Im a massive horror fan...and this is complete poo.

If you're expecting the next 'EVIL DEAD'. you are going to be sorely disappointed.

I gave it 3/10, that is being generous...it gets 2 points just for the poster, that is good I'll give 'em that.

If you love cheesy movies...

Warning: Spoilers
I never even heard of this movie beyond stumbling upon it upon Amazon. I thought, hey this sounds great! A zombie film that seems on all levels of wrong! I was right and wrong...

I know this movie was made on a low budget, but come on! We live in the digital age here folks! I want to see what is happening, really I'm quite interested. It was so dark and granulated like something you might see on you tube or a twenty year old VHS.

Perhaps this movie didn't touch all that sets me off during a movie, I mean comparing this movie to Shaun of the Dead is quite unjust. I know I'm sounding kind of harsh here, Special Dead did have some very good moments and great handling of handicapped theme, but nun-chuck guy got on my nerves, he didn't have enough moxie to act that way. I felt it lacked some irony that make 'spoofs' like this funny. I was expecting him to get 'zombie' after showing his love for the dead with the zombie chick.

I did enjoy the misplaced criminal though, he really gave me a laugh with 'helmet girl'. I enjoyed some of the handicapped banter, and creative use of glue sticks for shutting up zombies. I'm sure there were even more funny moments in this film, but I really am hard pressed to remember them right now.

Perhaps it may grow on me if I were to watch it again, but hey, it is going in the right direction, fans of the genre should give it a try if only to say you watched it. Like films of this sort, make up your own mind.

Nowhere near as bad as expected...
AnusPresley25 January 2012
... but that's not an endorsement.

Retards and zombies is a genre sorely lacking, but this effort did not hit home. There is squeamishness evident throughout at laughing at the intellectually handicapped - which kills the whole premise. C'mon, if you are going to make fun, you need to let go with both barrels or not at all. This squeamishness is what undid what could have been a true cult keeper.

I expected a _Police Academy_ brand of American idiocy. In this regard at least I was surprised. Nowhere near that level of dumbness. Zombies are good. Story not entirely predictable. Acting is passable. Still, opportunity squandered. I imagine what could have been in the absence of guilt and ethics. A _Bad Taste_ on steroids. Sadly, this blew it.

Worth seeing with pizza and a case of beer. But very easily forgotten.

What a letdown
happykook22 May 2008
Being a huge Zombie fan, when i heard about this movie, i was excited. In this day and age it is so hard to come across an original idea when it pertains to the zombie genre, and this one definitely had an original idea.

I have to say that i was sadly let down. I wish i could get back the hour and a half of my life i wasted watching this sad excuse for a zombie movie...

Now i understand that Indy films usually don't have the flair or expensive effects, but what they usually have it actors making the best of what they have, this was not one of those cases.

The character's were tragically cliché' to the point of being an embarrassment. I honestly wonder if the writer simply wrote this movie to perpetuate his idea of what he thinks is "cool". I could not tell if the characters were so horrible because the writing was so terrible, or because the actors were terrible, but after awhile i came to the conclusion that it is both...

Even the sex scene (which is usually the staple in indy movies that draws people to watch) left me wanting to switch the channel to public access telethons. I've seen much better acting in porn movies. it seemed at times as if the cast had been held at gunpoint and forced to read their lines...

The endless dragging on of nunchuk swinging, head bashing, and pummeling lended to the fact that this zombie movie could not even stay on track with any zombie traditions... A zombie is simply not going to sit on your lap and gently punch your chest for 10 minutes, without trying to bite you, nor would someone with a zombie sitting on their laps just sit there not defending themselves and just call for help.

I could continue to elaborate on the many flaws both in the script, actors, and acting, but much like this movie, it would simply be a waste of your time...

I hope that another Indy group takes a stab at this idea and shows this cast/crew how a good zombie movie can be made.

P.S. and seriously you guys are charging $20 plus $8 shipping for this crap???

Don't bother seeing this movie.
rbrar21 October 2006
I saw this movie at the Hollywood Film Festival. In my opinion (and the opinion of my zombie-loving friends), there are only two things that this movie has going for it: the poster and the premise.

The fact of the matter is the movie itself isn't funny and isn't scary. On top of that, it's SO damn dark that you can't tell what's happening for most of the movie. Maybe it's gory. I don't know. I couldn't tell in that sea of black. Don't bother seeing it.

Public service announcement: the other review of this film on IMDb was submitted by one of the lead actresses... so take it with a giant grain of salt. No... best to ignore it altogether. It just isn't true.

Im Special Dead zombies attack Camp Special Dude a campground for the mentally disabled. The campers and workers try to survive and escape led by the owners son who is the best comedy horror character since Ash. The other brilliant character is the guy who plays the guitar and throws in lyrics about what he'd like to do to various women - I couldn't resist using his best line as my review title.

The only thing really holding this movie back is the black character who adds nothing whatsoever to this film and just seems to be in it so equally rubbish rap music can swell up on the soundtrack. He's involved in a couple of amusing scenes but the only bits of this movie I actually found unpleasant to watch or offensive involved him. Laughing at spastics isn't very pc but in the context of this movie I found it fine, intimating that you are going to rape a woman you hijacked and the endless crap about guns isn't funny or really very interesting. If they'd cut that nonsense out I would have said this is a 7/10.

Despite this drawback The Special Dead is a great zombie movie full of funny scenes and amusing characters, it's definitely worth a watch.

How did this get selected for a Film Festival? Great concept. Great poster. Awesome Tag Line.

That's it. Your enjoyment ends there.

This film was so badly shot that 90% of the movie was impossible to see. How was the gore, you ask? How was the makeup? No idea. Couldn't see ANY of it. It was almost completely shrouded in darkness. I can't believe that this was allowed in a film festival where people paid money to see it. I was so angry, I almost walked out and demanded my money back. It's like watching a bootlegged copy of a movie someone recorded at a movie theater with a hand held, cheap video camera as the battery was dying.

I stayed, out of respect for the filmmakers who probably did try to make something new. But basically, it was a waste of 2 hours and hard-earned money. They should sell the rights to the concept and let Sam Raimi or someone completely re-write and direct it.

Save your money and your time.

Dismal
artpf25 December 2011
Special Camp Dude, populated by a motley group of bad actors pretending to be retarded, disabled, autistic and invalid are over run by zombies.

Not really sure they explained that one too well.

The characters are so thinly drawn and are such throwback stereotypes that you'll not find them funny in the slightest.

The soundtrack is right out of bad 80s movies.

Oh, and any surprise that there is not one shred of coherent direction? But then there isn't a storyline either.

There's a camp for special ed kids that knows about the zombies and the solution is to wait till dark and use one rifle, one pistol and a sythe to kill them.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of politically incorrect movies, but this one is just plainly bad.

If you like blood squeezed out of a ketchup bottle as your special effects, you might like this flick.

Being politically incorrect is SO much fun...
davidtosca5 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I would love to give this movie more stars if I could only see what was going on! Why the release print is so dark is a mystery. I hope it can be fixed because this is a minor gem of satire, the type of film that the Politically Correct of the world loathe before they've even seen it.

The actors seem to love their molto-bizarro characters. Mark Bates as a Tourette's zombiehas his share of the funny moments, spewing out filth and bloodeverywhere. And David Reynolds sympathetically plays a bald ox of a zombie who literally loses his head in one of the most bizarre and mirth-inducing sequences in the film.

Weird people made this and weird people will like it. Now if the film can only be made more visible, it might attract a wider, weirder audience!

Thinking about picking up Special Dead? DO IT!
GutterJim28 October 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Special Dead takes place at Camp Special Dude, a ranch for the mentally handicapped. When a few new campers arrive at Special Dude, so do the undead! The campers and counselors have to fight to stop the outbreak and stay alive. As it says on Special Dead's IMDb plot summary: "It's a campy stampede of blood, boobs and gore as some "very special" people show that they can kick some serious undead ass." With that said let me get to reviewing this Zomedy! There is a really sharp picture during all of the daytime shots in the movie. Yet nights falls fairly early on in the film and most of the story takes place during the night. The picture is a bit grainy in the darker/night time scenes but that just helps to set a creepy atmosphere. After a second viewing of Special Dead at a friends house on a huge HDTV I can say that the quality of the picture really stands out.

The make up effects for the gore and undead was pretty damn good, it's just gross enough for you to want to attack these zombies with a bar of soap and a hose. A few of the zombies reminded me of the look of Fulci's zombies in Zombi 2, Dirty and nasty looking! The gore mixed with the humor very well. One nasty scene has a camp member joking about how stupid zombies are because he got bit by one, he then shows off his arm with an open gash and bubbling green blood inside, AWESOME. Another gore filled scene had me wondering why has quick set glue poured into a zombie's mouth never been used in a living dead story before? It seems like a logical way to stop a zombie from being able to bite you.

The sounds effects were spot on, A zombie gurgling with a mouth full of blood while it's face is getting smashed in, One of the counselors getting his face beaten against a tree while urinating, nasty flesh munching, and plenty of slashing, chain saws and loud gunfire all sounded awesome. The soundtrack was just alright. A few rap songs felt out of place but then again I'm not a huge fan of hip hop. All the other music styles worked great with what was going on during the film. The metal tracks really pick up the pace and give energy to the zombie ass kicking that going on. If there was a soundtrack available I'd would recommend picking it up for the Andy Allen songs, his character dies off kinda early in the story which is ashame since he's a great guitar player and has some really funny songs.

All of the characters are unique and the acting felt genuine from everyone. The actors playing the "special" kids at camp Special Dude don't come off as wanting to make fun of the mentally disabled, their characters just have fun making fun of each other. Random comments and jokes from the "special" kids are hilarious! "Pancake sized nipples" came out of no where and had me rolling on the floor. Is it wrong to laugh at how a mentally challenged person might normally act? Everything in Special Dead was pretty faithful to zombie-lore except one scene where the leader, Mac, has the ability to stop the attack of a female zombie by simple giving her a kiss. That one threw me off a little but besides that I recommend this DVD to everyone that loves Shaun of the Dead, Fulci's Zombi 2, Dawn of the Dead, and The Ringer. Long live the Zomedy!

The most heartwarming film I've seen
jack-126212 July 2008
Despite the title this film is really pretty charming and the most original zombie film I seen in ages. The gore is nice and grimy, different to the usual..

I couldn't believe how sensitive the attitudes were to the retards in the film. wtf?

There's a nice, genuine, 80s vibe flowing through the whole thing which just about does it, really. All the 90s and 00s zombie offerings were pretty dull. surely everyone's agreed on that.

this one rocks like shaun of the dead only much nastier and with hot girls.

definitely a 7 at least

bless

"Special Dead" is special indeed!
DaFlesh12 January 2008
As a zombie movie fan, I bought "Special Dead" simply out of fascination for the entire concept. Let's face it, a camp for retarded people getting invaded by zombies - who wouldn't want to see that!? Not me!!! "Special Dead" is quite bluntly, fantastic fun.

As far as horror-comedy goes, it rates right up there with Shaun of the Dead, Evil Dead II and Severance.

How can it not rate as highly when we are talking about a film that contains a zombie with Tourette's Syndrome, sex with a zombie, a frustrated toothless zombie, and a bunch of retards trying to stay alive (including a wheelchair-bound woman wielding an electric chainsaw!? It has to be mentioned that the film is also very well directed and written - quotes like "Holy Jesus's hairy nut-sack" spring to mind. But truly memorable, quality quotes are too numerous to mention here.

The death scenes are exceptionally well done too. Any movie that manages to include a zombie dying through a multiple popsicle-stick stomping must be praised.

Special mention has to go to the Editor (exceptional work) and the soundtrack. Particularly the soundtrack. If, by chance, your handicap is blindness (in which case I'm not quite sure how you're reading this review), then it's worth buying this film purely for the soundtrack! There are a couple of original tracks that are pure gold.

My only negative here goes to the acting ability of Jason Brubaker (Machiavelli Stone). All I can say is that he has the charisma of a car accident, and if only his character was played by someone who could pull it off (like Andrew Dice Clay for instance), then I would have rated this film a 10.

Regardless, Special Dead is tremendous fun. I can only hope that it gets the exposure it deserves, and if you have the chance to watch it, you will not be disappointed. For its genre, it really is a great film.

An instant cult classic
djolley8716 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I've been dying to see this movie since I first heard of it late last year. Sure, we could talk all day about just how "wrong" this movie is, but why not sit back, toss those bunched-up PC panties aside for a freaking hour and a half, and enjoy the heck out of this hilarious zombie movie already enjoying a cult following. And for what it's worth, name me one other movie that transforms the mentally challenged into heroes. That's what I thought. Anyway, Special Dead is just hilarious, not only milking numerous stereotypes for all they're worth, but kicking them once they're proverbially down. The zombies are just downright disgusting, their grey skin peeling off in bunches, their mouths filled with meat, blood, dirt, and heaven knows what else, and their blood just waiting to shoot out in mini-geysers as soon as they're attacked. I don't know what the chicken-eating zombie was actually eating, but it looked even nastier than the real thing. Low-budget horror filmmakers could learn a lot from watching this movie. Even the soundtrack, featuring the likes of Dark Reign and Eating Alice, is pretty kicking - although nothing tops Andy Allen's unique campfire song (there's even a sing-along version before the ending credits).

As the tagline says, "Sometimes heroes ride the short bus," and in this case they ride it to Camp Special Dude owned and operated by Cameron "Snuff" Stone (Larrs Jackson, who was just hilarious, especially on the topic of zombie horses), who bought the camp years ago for a song - because, we soon learn, it was infested with zombies. Snuff's second in command is his son Machiavelli "Mack" Stone (Jason Brubaker). Mack only seems to care about making time with female counselors Cassie (Amy Wade) and Harley (Haneka Haynes), but he turns out to have real skills when it comes to dispatching zombies. The "special" kids include Snuff's wheelchair-bound daughter Dale (Gia Franzia); Todd (Anthony Rutowicz), whose loud talking, hideous toboggan, and talent for making all kinds of things out of popsicle sticks do little to help him convince Dale to be his girlfriend; an uncommunicative mountain of flesh who could well be descended from Tor Johnson (David Reynolds); a shy "helmet head" (April Wade); and several others of less importance to the story. Adding greatly to the fun is Eriq (Jah Shams), a young gangster bound for boot camp who was accidentally placed on the wrong bus. All of the actors were darn near brilliant, if you ask me (especially Franzia and Rutowicz).

Don't write any of these characters off too soon, not even the most challenged among them. While guys like Mack rely mostly on obvious weapons such as shotguns, sickles, numchuks - yes, numchuks - and good, old-fashioned bare fists, the campers tend to adopt more unconventional fighting methods. Of course, not everyone can survive, so you get the additional treat of watching special campers taking on their now-zombified peers. You may want to turn your head at one point, though, as Mack demonstrates a most disgusting, non-lethal zombie-controlling method.

Now, maybe you're thinking you won't see any sex or nudity in a film like this - well, think again. You, along with some of the voyeuristic campers, will definitely see "boobies" at Camp Special Dude. You'll also hear plenty of foul language (of course, if I were fighting for my life against zombies, I would be cursing up a blue streak, too). For the most part, though, this is a genuinely original and creative film (a real rarity in the American-made horror genre). Just remember that everything you see here is all in the name of gory fun. Where else are you going to see a zombie with Tourette Syndrome? Needless to say, some people will feel deeply offended and outraged by this film (and most of them will undoubtedly condemn it without ever seeing so much as a trailer), but Special Dead wears such sobriquets as "the most offensive zombie movie ever made" with pride. I'll be enjoying this movie numerous times in the coming years.

"The Special dEaD is the funniest film I've seen since Shaun of the Dead"
adrfilm8 March 2006
Those are not my words, but I ran across an a review of the film at Creature Corner and I thought I would share it with everyone.

Larrs (THE CONVENT) Jackson, Jay Brubaker, Gia (PREMONITIONS) Natale, Amy (MOTHER GHOST) Wade, David (HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES) Reynolds, Carl (DAY OF THE DEAD 2: CONTAGIUM) Storm Directed By Thomas L. Phillips and Sean Simmons Written by Jared Tweedie "Sometimes Heroes Ride the Short Bus." I know, I know. I'm going to tell you about a zombie film that takes place at a Special Ed camp. I'm going to tell you about some un-"PC" comedy. I'm going to tell you about an independent film that, at first glance, might seem like a slew of other independent zombie films. But trust me on this… We start off with a pair of hikers who come across a screen-door in the middle of nowhere (well, a few miles from Camp Special Dude anyway). This screen-door apparently is the only barrier to a pool of spring water that apparently creates zombies (it's happened before in this area). One of the hikers has Tourette's Syndrome and, yes, he becomes the world's first zombie with said affliction. Trust me folks it only gets funnier from here.

Camp Special Dude is a camp for special people. Yes. One of them wears a helmet. Yes. One of them keeps glue and popsicle sticks in his fanny-pack for "projects". No. Most of the counselors don't want to be there. But, see, bored counselors means sex. Right? Exactly.

Luckily this particular camp is run by one "Snuff" Stone (Larrs Jackson) who's been through a zombie outbreak before. Because all Hell's about to break loose. His son nunchuk-wielding son and wheelchair-bound daughter, with the help of a very out of place hoodlum, must fight their way off the mountain and try to save the campers in the process.

"You ever ridden on a zombie horse before, son? I have. It ain't fun." The gore and zombie effects are decent enough. We're coming to expect them to be. But the situation and dialogue are what set THE SPECIAL DEAD apart. Jared Tweedie threw caution to the wind and brought us some damn funny stuff here. There's a little song one of the counselors sings at the campfire just before the zombies arrive that is truly wrong.

It works. THE SPECIAL DEAD is the funniest horror film I've seen since SHAUN OF THE DEAD. Seriously. Just sit back, suspend your "Defense O' Meter" and enjoy the show! You can also go to the website and read it yourself, there is a nice picture there as well as the poster.

A hell of a "Special" time!!!
gianatale28 February 2006
This is such a fun and non-stop action movie. Probably one of the best horror/comedy films that has been made in years. Everyone should watch this. A guarantee great time. From beginning to end, you will laugh your pants off yet still have the experience of watching fast moving, scary zombies. All of the characters are unique and special which makes the movie all the more interesting. A lot of times in these horror films that come out nobody really cares who dies. Also, the development of the characters is often times weak. Not in this movie. You will care about every single person in this film because finally we have a writer that can write and a director that can direct.

Special Dead takes me by Surpirse
jwestallstar28 February 2006
In writing this review I will try an be as unbiased as I possibly can. I have worked in the film industry for 10 years now, as an Assistant Director and now as a Line Producer.

One of my good friends stars in the film. His name is Anthony Rutowicz and he plays the character of Todd. I went to the premiere in Hollywood to support him. I am not a fan of horror movies and especially zombie ones. The horror films I enjoy are more of the suspense and thriller kind. But I went anyway and I walked away completely surprised and blown away.

This movie is down right hilarious, I mean laugh out loud, oh yeah and I jumped on more than one occasion. Listening to the audience was incredible. The ate everything about this movie up. Yes, there was a little pun intended in that. I just could not resist.

What makes this movie stand out above all other zombie films is its originality and its characters. When you tell me that zombies are going to invade a camp for the mentally handicapped, I think here we go with something down right stupid. But man was I ever wrong. It was creative in ways that I never could have expected. It laughed at itself and had fun with the genre at the same time.

While this movie is a comedy at heart, it stays true to its horror roots. It is as bloody, gory and as violent as they come. If you are squeamish and weak of heart, stay away. If you are easily offended, then stay away. But if you wanna go on a fun ride, then please, watch the Special Dead.

The characters are unforgettable, the death scenes as unique as they come. This is an independent horror film, but they pull off everything as if this was done by professionals.

I could go on and on and spoil this movie for everyone who intends on seeing it, but I won't.

If you like comedy, watch it. If you like zombie movies, then watch it. If you like horror movies then watch it. If you wanna have a good time for an hour and a half then this is the movie for you. Leave your brain at the door and just prepare yourself to have a good time.

Finally, laughing at the handicap is fun again
singlestarsky22 March 2006
This is a B flick that does justice to the zombie/horror film genre. Even the songs in the movie are hilarious, and there are lots of hot chicks. If you love B flicks, zombie films, or both put this on your must see list. Good gore and the zombies look pretty creepy. Also some funny twist in this film that I never thought I would see in a zombie film, for example one of the hot ladies in this film is transformed into a zombie, but this does not stop the hero from making out with her. This film will someday be called a classic and will even have a cult following. If you want to be cool within your movie loving circle of friends, be the first one out of the group to see this film. You will not be disappointed.

This movie is a BLOODY GEM
tburke7822 October 2006
I saw Special Dead over the weekend at the Hollywood Film Festival and it was a whole bunch of fun! The movie was creative. Yes it was low budget and had some technical flaws. But overall, the story was fun to watch. Some scenes, like the one with campfire and the guy with the nun-chucks, were very funny. Other scenes were very bloody. As someone who likes this type of movie, I left the theater knowing I had seen a cult classic. I really hope I can rent/buy it soon. This is the perfect midnight cult movie. If you like zombie movies and are looking for a silly take on the whole zombie thing, then this is a good movie. If you don't have a sense of humor, you might not like this movie. This movie gets my vote as a Bloody Gem.

Pleasantly surprised
drezdock7 November 2011
I wasn't expecting much when I saw this title peaking out from behind a bunch of discount zombie movies. However being the enthusiast that I am, I decided to give it a shot. I was really blown away by the quality of this production. I found the acting decent, the script witty, and the majority of the shots composed quite well.

The only flaws I could really say this piece suffers from is a tendency to linger on some of the zombie carnage for too long, and repetition of some of the same jokes.

All in all I found it a highly entertaining piece of zombie cinema with just enough tongue in cheek to keep me giggling almost the whole time.

Well done!

Do You Like Shark Week?
fancymandrell25 November 2007
That line made the entire movie worth the watch. The character of Todd Slater is off the hook funny. His relationship with Dale Stone is one of the funniest, cutest and weird relationships in film. Yeah, yeah, I know I am talking about a zombie film dealing with the mentally handicapped, but that doesn't mean you can't have fun and endearing characters. There is enough blood and gore in this movie to keep even the most hardcore zombie fans interested. But the movie does not take itself seriously and that is what makes the movie work. It knows it is a zombie comedy and it knows it is a low budget movie at that, but that is what makes the movie. Funny, funny, funny, funny, funny and even funny. That is the best way to describe this great zombie drive in movie.

Entertaining zombie opus
slayrrr6668 November 2008
Warning: Spoilers
"Special Dead" is a lot of fun if approached in the proper mood.

**SPOILERS**

Working at Camp Special Dude, Machiavelli Stone, (Jason Brubaker) is infuriated his sister Dale, (Gia Franzia) is in charge of the camp, a camp for handicapped people. When he finds evidence of a zombie infestation in the area, he gathers Cassie Hewitt, (Amy Wade) Harley Jacquette, (Haneka Haynes) Todd Slater, (Anthony Rutowicz) May Littlejohns, (April Wade) Eriq Eldorado, (Jah Shams) Ismael Ziegler, (David Reynolds) and Buck Renshaw, (Thomas Crnkovich) the others at the camp and tries to get them away from the deadly creatures. When they manage to get a handle on the situation, the zombies manage to get the upper hand and force them to defend themselves against the creatures. Having to resort to more outlandish tactics, the surviving members try to battle off the voracious zombies and get away.

The Good News: This was actually a lot of fun and had some good points going for it. One of the best assets to this one is the fact that there's just an incredible amount of action in this one, and that's a fun quality to have. The confrontations with the zombies are done nearly from the start, as we're barely fifteen minutes into the film before the campfire attack that sends everyone off running around the camp trying to seek shelter, and from there, it's just nonstop action through to the very end. There's no shortage of good scenes, from the attack out by the chicken coop to the battle in the outhouse and an extended fight in the parking lot, where a lot of different gags are used which are genuinely funny without trying to be as they're put into the situation logically. Other major fun comes from the two women getting into a real knock-down, drag-out, fist-fighting brawl that is certainly much harder than expected and comes off extremely well-done. The final race for freedom doesn't have as many obstacles to overcome as most, but the fact that it decides to end on a positive note and actually have more than just a couple surviving that brought them together, so it's only natural that there only be a couple of them since it goes with the larger-surviving-number story. The main reason why this is allowed to be so big and full of action is the result of the film's really furious pacing. As mentioned before, the attacks come in a little before the fifteen minute mark, so this one just doesn't have the time to do much of anything except get right into everything, which keeps the film moving along so quickly it never lets up, having a positive outcome as the result. That is greatly appreciated and makes it a much more enjoyable film. Also quite fun is the film's subtle humor, as the film doesn't go over-the-top to offend due to the subject matter and instead decides on giving little quips here and there, most surprisingly coming from the campers sniping at each other, but a couple visual gags, such as the guy looking up the girl's skirts as they argue fixing a truck or the self-referential humor when arming for the final fight are pretty good and are apart of the film's tone. Here, the zombies don't look terrible but are perfectly passable for the situation, not really going for the dead-centuries-look but still looking like zombies, which is nice and really gives them an appropriate menace. The last plus here is the gore, which here is nowhere near the top of the line for zombie films but holds it's own well, with plenty of gunshots splattering heads, a body adorned with arrows, limbs hacked up or ripped off and devoured, stabbing, impaling, slicing and more, leading to a ton of splatter as well as tons of blood-stained clothing in a memorable image. All of these make this film enjoyable.

The Bad News: This one did have a couple flaws for it that will hold it down. The biggest issue here is that the film decides to spend the majority of it's time dealing with the mentally-disabled, and the fact that they're involved heavily, often-times still in character when dealing with the zombies or other situations, may rub some people the wrong way. This one doesn't attack or make fun of people who have these conditions, it just merely wraps a horror film around the people who do and it won't matter that it does, as the mere inclusion of the subject matter maybe a sensitive issue for some and won't take it in the way this is intended. The only other thing it fails at is giving an explanation for anything that happens in the film. There's nothing said about the zombie's origin, as the pre-credit sequence doesn't offer anything remotely worthwhile and the characters here tend to think of them as an everyday facet of life that they must live with, but again no explanation story. The same goes for the purpose of the camp, which isn't a fault of the film at all since it's pacing is the cause for that and we aren't around long enough to find out. Otherwise, this one was quite enjoyable.

The Final Verdict: With a lot to like about it and some very mild, minor flaws in it, this one isn't that bad at all and has a lot of things going for it. Definitely give it a shot if you're able to handle the subject matter and are a huge fan of cheesy, entertaining zombie fare, while those who aren't should heed caution with it.

this movie goes good with beer!

this movie was a lot of fun to watch and was better than expected. The more you drink the better it gets!. the are a lot of funny quotes that make this movie a classic. I compare it to the first Friday the 13th with a lot better dialog. Jay Brubaker definitely has a promising future and makes owning this DVD a must. the girls are definitely hot which make me looking for more nude scenes, like when Mack was boning the zombie chick. or when the two girls are fighting, a top flying off wouldn't have been a bad thing. I was shocked on how hard it was to find this movie, net flix, blockbuster should be carrying this movie for rental, their is a huge market for these kinds of movies that is not being tapped. This is a guilty pleasure that should be more accessible.

Pretty Special

At last - an original idea for a zombie film, well executed. The film is extremely funny - from the basic idea of retards being attacked by and turned into zombies, as well as how some of those characters are realised (the first character turned into a zombie, who appears throughout the film, is a scream - I couldn't stop laughing at his character). The soundtrack is awesome, I'm not sure if it is original or not, but it fit the movie perfectly. The campfire guitar song was very, very funny. Although obviously shot on a tiny budget, is very well executed. The make-up and effects are acceptable - I was a bit disappointed that most of the action took place at night, although I expect that this covered a lot of budgetary compromises. The acting (mostly) was above average for a cast of no-names. If you love politically incorrect zombie films, Special Dead is a must. Thoroughly recommended.

SPECIAL DEAD is a special Movie
mmgirl2825 November 2007
I had been waiting on this movie to come over for over a year, and as soon as it did I got my copy. This is one of the funniest and original zombie movies ever made. And yes it is a low budget horror film, but it shines. I could only imagine what could have been done had there been a big budget. The characters are great, original and played to perfection, including Jason who plays Machiavelli. He reminds me of a young Bruce from Evil Dead. This movie ranks right up there with some of the horror cult classic. If you get a chance to check this out, do so. This is and is not your standard zombie flick. They stay true to a lot we know about zombies, but the movie adds flavor throughout.

A Laugh A MInute

The is the perfect indie zombie film, I laughed my but off. The best way to describe this cult classic is: OUTSTANDING!!!!! I watched this by myself when I first got it in the mail and loved it. The next weekend, me and a bunch of my friends got together and watched it, it was even better. Since then I have watched it two more times and have not gotten tired of it. If you are a zombie fan and wanna laugh, get this movie, it will not disappointed, I promise. 10 stars all the way. I would one day love to see this on the big screen , with a bunch of fans spilling out of the seats. It would be like a Zombie Rocky Horror Picture Show. I call dibs on dressing like Dale Stone. "You are much more stupider, stupider than me Todd."
