Special Dead (2006)
Special Dead takes me by Surpirse
In writing this review I will try an be as unbiased as I possibly can. I have worked in the film industry for 10 years now, as an Assistant Director and now as a Line Producer.
One of my good friends stars in the film. His name is Anthony Rutowicz and he plays the character of Todd. I went to the premiere in Hollywood to support him. I am not a fan of horror movies and especially zombie ones. The horror films I enjoy are more of the suspense and thriller kind. But I went anyway and I walked away completely surprised and blown away.
This movie is down right hilarious, I mean laugh out loud, oh yeah and I jumped on more than one occasion. Listening to the audience was incredible. The ate everything about this movie up. Yes, there was a little pun intended in that. I just could not resist.
What makes this movie stand out above all other zombie films is its originality and its characters. When you tell me that zombies are going to invade a camp for the mentally handicapped, I think here we go with something down right stupid. But man was I ever wrong. It was creative in ways that I never could have expected. It laughed at itself and had fun with the genre at the same time.
While this movie is a comedy at heart, it stays true to its horror roots. It is as bloody, gory and as violent as they come. If you are squeamish and weak of heart, stay away. If you are easily offended, then stay away. But if you wanna go on a fun ride, then please, watch the Special Dead.
The characters are unforgettable, the death scenes as unique as they come. This is an independent horror film, but they pull off everything as if this was done by professionals.
I could go on and on and spoil this movie for everyone who intends on seeing it, but I won't.
If you like comedy, watch it. If you like zombie movies, then watch it. If you like horror movies then watch it. If you wanna have a good time for an hour and a half then this is the movie for you. Leave your brain at the door and just prepare yourself to have a good time.
Earl's Your Uncle (2004)
A short film that rocks
Earl's Your Uncle completely took me by surprise. I was recently able to view it through a screener copy that was sent to a film festival. Can't say which one, but it doesn't matter.
The I did some research online and got to see it online. This movie had me laughing from beginning to end. The woman that plays Sheena is just down right funny. Whene she came into the movie, I could not wait to see her again.
If there was a downfall to the film, it was that she was not in it enough, but hey, then maybe i would have gotten tired of seeing her. She did steal the show.
It was shot in black and white and it fit the film so well, the mood, the setting, the look, everything just worked for this movie.
I was a little confused with the beginning and the end, but after thinking about it, it all made sense. ' I don't know if the filmmakers were doing this on purpose, if not it still worked for me.
This is a short film that I would love to see made into a feature. These characters could carry an entire film. But if it ever made it that far, hopefully they would not replace the actors with bigger names. The guys did a great job.
I don't even know if this counts as a review, maybe i am just rambling on, but I enjoyed the movie.
