If there's one film to see this year, it's 12 Years a Slave, a wrenching but rewarding historical epic. See This12 Years a Slave var brightcovevideoid = '2752863002001'; Sometimes we have to do hard things. I can't think of a film in a recent memory I have been so compelled to sit through, wrestling all the while with how difficult it is to do so. 12 Years a Slave is, to put it simply, the first film to truly convey the horrors of what used to be called the "peculiar institution." But it is such a brilliantly directed, written and performed piece of cinema,...

Jane Eyre graduates from required reading to accomplished cinema.
It may come as no surprise that I am not the world’s leading expert, nor am I the world’s biggest fan, of period English chick lit, which serves as the source material for a new adaptation of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre, originally published in 1847. There.s no doubt the book has had enormous influence on literature and irrefutable popularity, as many of the women I know jump to the opportunity to claim this as a favorite required reading from their school years. Going into this film, having never read the book, the question for me remained simple… how does it work on screen?
Jane Eyre tells the story of the title character, a pale scrawny girl with an independent, even wild spirit for her time. She is orphaned at a young age and left to be raised by her unloving aunt,...

Perfect Sense is a movie that I imagine will be rather polarizing, with most people loving it or hating it, and only a smaller number falling somewhere in the like/don't-like spectrum. And those reactions will depend, in large part, on what folks are expecting and looking for from the flick. In Perfect Sense, there's a possible global pandemic which may just be the End Times. It begins with people being hit with an intense emotional sadness, balling over into crying lumps, and when they dry their eyes, they no longer have their sense of smell. Further emotion/sense symptoms follow from there. Some people will already be out with this emotional aspect -- they'll find it silly. And it is a little silly. Others will be pissed that questions about this pandemic go unanswered. How did it start? How did it spread? How does it work? Is there an immunity or a cure.

Reposting this from Friday. I got lots of helpful responses, and even learned of a couple of titles that I didn’t know existed. So, here’s the post again, to continue the flow, in case you missed the original post, and have some titles to add that haven’t already.
Alright folks, I need some help from you guys here. As the title suggests, I’m working on a future post, and one part of my research requires that I compile a complete list of independent black feature films that have been released theatrically in the USA since the beginning of this century. And that’s where you come in.
First, I should define some terms here; “black feature film” means fictional narrative films that tell stories primarily about people of African descent (no documentaries). The cultural/racial heritage of the filmmaker is irrelevant. And “independent” means that the...

The Argentinean thriller, The Secret In Their Eyes, is a story of unresolved love set against the mystery of an unresolved murder. The surprise winner of this year.s Oscar for Best Foreign Language film is a handsome if conventional film that makes its leisurely way through several genres; equal parts murder mystery, adult romance, buddy cop movie, and political discourse. Writer/Director Juan José Campanella lets his story slowly unfold in satisfying detail resulting in a film that is engrossing, intense, and in one extended shot, exhilarating. The Secret In Their Eyes is less about a murder case and more about the living left behind, and is a highly recommended drama.
Based on a novel by Eduardo Sacheri, the plot of The Secret In Their Eyes hinges on a young woman.s murder and a middle-aged man.s determination to find justice for her 25 years later. Benjamin Esposito (Ricardo Darín...

It had been a successful decade for the comic book movie, with that trend continuing into the latter half of the decade. Just as looked like the public demand for irradiated heroes looked to be diminishing, with lacklustre showings from the likes of Spider-Man 3 and Fantastic Four, out came Iron Man. Coupled with a brilliant script and an excellent performance from Robert Downey Jr as the titular zillionaire industrialist/playboy/freedom fighter/all-round genius, the end result was something truly special. Downey’s career was also revitalised, earning him a role in Tropic Thunder (which would earn him an Oscar nomination). Louis Leterrier’s The Incredible Hulk took a similar approach, this time giving Edward Norton of Fight Club fame a shot at getting under the skin of the green goliath. They set a tough act to follow, but followed they were by one Christopher Nolan. With the Batman...

Wallace (Darlan Cunha) and Acerola (Douglas Silva) are inseparable childhood friends and closer than brothers. Fact: Cidade De Deus (City of God) has produced a spin-off television show and of course, this sequel. - When Cidade De Deus burst onto the world cinema scene it propelled Fernando Meirelles into filmmaking stardom (he has since worked on The Constant Gardener and will preem Blindness sometime next year) and it spawned a television series (which in turn has birthed a new film).Since January is a month that is generally filled with plenty of holiday films and Oscar bait leftovers, I question whether a Jan.18th slot is the right approach - but looking back to 2003 I realized that the first film was release almost on the exact same day, so regardless of the theater release-strategy that will be in use, I'm still keen on seeing the City of Men (view the trailer here) - its a sequel but not in a normal sequel type of way. Have the characters evolved into bigger thugs or has the violence mellowed down? Back in the game for a second outing,

NEW YORK -- Miramax Films has acquired North American rights to City of Men (Cidade dos Homens), the big-screen sequel to Fernando Meirelles' Academy Award-nominated Brazilian drama City of God. It also picked up U.K., Australian, New Zealand and South African rights to the film. The feature also is an adaptation of the Sundance Channel series of the same name, which continues the story of two young friends who find themselves on opposite sides of a gang war in the rough slums of Rio de Janeiro. Miramax president Daniel Battsek sealed the deal at this month's Toronto International Film Festival after vp acquisitions Peter Lawson brought in the project. The executives based their decision on a five-minute promo reel of the film, which is now being edited. Meirelles, who received an Oscar nomination for best director for God, will produce the new film, with Paulo Morelli helming a screenplay by Elena Soarez. Morelli, Andrea Barata Ribeiro and Bel Berlinck are producing with Meirelles through their 02 Filmes outfit.
