Bernard Hill, the actor whose memorable tones and rugged visage brought to life a variety of fantastic performances, has died. He was 79.
Born in Manchester in 1944, Hill quickly gravitated towards stage work before taking the chance to make the jump to film and TV. Yet his early career was marked by few standout roles, mostly relegated to brief appearances on the likes of I, Claudius and the BBC's Tom Stoppard adaptation Professional Foul.
Still, he found one of the first parts that would define his career in Alan Bleasdale's The Black Stuff, a one-off TV play in 1980 that the writer would expand into classic comedy drama Boys From The Blackstuff. Hill scored a BAFTA nomination for his performance as the tragic, yet dimly self-aware Yosser.
Other TV work included Dennis Potter adaptation Lipstick On Your Collar, a huge swathe of Shakespeare adaptations including Wolf Hall, disability drama Skallagrigg,...

Is 2024 the year of tennis? At the movies and on our TV screens, the answer might be yes. This spring brings two major releases that both heavily feature racquets, green courts, and sweaty tennis action. The first was Peacock’s “Apples Never Fall,” a limited series based on “Big Little Lies” scribe Liane Moriarty’s novel about the family of two married tennis pros (played by Annette Bening and Sam Neill) who are forced to contend with the mysterious and sudden disappearance of their matriarch. Even more anticipated is “Challengers,” a Luca Guadagnino film that arrives — after strike-related delays — this April to tell the steamy story of a tennis coach (Zendaya) caught between her husband and an old flame as the two men go head to head in a Challenger tennis event.
These two releases mark the biggest Spring for tennis-related media in…possibly ever. Which isn’t necessarily hard...

The month of April seemingly sailed by with far too many moderate releases, and the month ends this weekend with more of the same. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino returns with the sexy tennis drama “Challengers,” starring the powerhouse trio of Zendaya (“Euphoria”), Josh O’Connor (“The Crown”) and Mike Faist (“West Side Story”) as superstar tennis players who fall into a competitive love triangle. This is Zendaya’s first movie after “Dune: Part Two,” and it will be a real test for her as a box office star, since sports dramas can be hit or miss. “Challengers” really is riding on her popularity to avoid the pitfalls of the genre.
Tennis has had an especially tough time at the box office, as seen by Will Smith‘s Oscar-winning turn in the 2021 release “King Richard,” about the father of Venus and Serena Williams,...

Zendaya has, in just a small handful of years, asserted herself as a true A-list star in Hollywood. So much focus is paid to actors in their 40s (or much older) such as Tom Cruise, one of the many famous people named Chris, or Anne Hathaway. But Zendaya has emerged as one of our new movie stars, thanks to her work in wildly successful franchises such as "Dune" and "Spider-Man." But can her star power help turn "Challengers," an original sports drama centered around tennis, into a hit? That's the big question MGM is asking right now as the movie gets ready to make its way to theaters next weekend.
Hailing from "Call Me By Your Name" director Luca Guadagnino, "Challengers" is eyeing an opening between $7 and $12 million, per Box Office Pro. The only other big release on April 26 is Lionsgate's Christian drama "Unsung Hero." Yes, faith-based movies have...

Hollywood casting can be a fickle thing. But for actresses who’ve graced the silver screen as Spider-Man’s love interest, there seems to be a recurring theme – a hidden talent for tennis!
A still from Spider-Man
Believe it or not, all three actresses—Kirsten Dunst, Emma Stone, and Zendaya—who have portrayed Spider-Man’s love interest on the big screen share a surprising connection to the world of tennis.
It’s not merely a coincidence; each of them has actually portrayed a tennis player in different movies, following their roles in Spider-Man flicks.
Spider-Man Actresses Have Unexpected Tennis Connection
The first connection in this web of coincidence takes us back to 2004’s romantic comedy Wimbledon. Kirsten Dunst, who famously portrayed Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi‘s Spider-Man trilogy, took on the role of Lizzie Bradbury, a determined young tennis player on the verge of success.

Oddly, April is going to be a month full of genre films, but it’s also a month that might make some wonder whether any of the new movies can open with more than $20 million, putting theaters back into the place they were back in January and February. Read on for Gold Derby’s April 2024 box office preview.
“Civil War” (A24 – April 12)
Considering how Alex Garland‘s previous films “Men” and “Annihilation” were received, it’s hard to believe that his edgy political apocalyptic thriller could be one of the biggest movies of this month, but it’s also likely to be A24’s first movie to hit #1 on the weekend after 10 years of releases. Starring Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Nick Offerman, Jesse Plemons and Wagner Moura, Garland’s latest premiered at the SXSW Film and TV Festival, where it received mostly positive reviews. Meghan Markle historically always had good intentions as the new year approached. Like others, she resolved to step into some new habits beginning New Year’s Day. However, some resolutions stuck the landing easier than others. In Meghan’s words, one resolution was easily broken after a “couple of drinks.”
Meghan Markle spilled her New Year’s Resolution on her blog ‘The Tig’
For years, Meghan Markle authored a blog called The Tig. It had a wellness focus and covered travel, fashion, beauty, and self-love topics.

Meghan wrote: “Run a marathon. Stop biting my nails. Stop swearing. Re-learn French.”
She continued, “These make my New Year’s resolution list nearly (Aka actually every) single year. The marathon hasn’t happened. The swearing comes in lulls triggered by...

Wimbledon 's plan of building a new 8,000-seater show court with a retractable roof and 38 other tennis courts has been ratified by the Merton Council.
This latest development is a significant step in Wimbledon's 2030 vision of transforming the site at the All England Club after Thursday's meeting ended with the Councillors voting six to four in favor of the proposed project called the Aeltc Wimbledon Park Project.
It comes just a few months from the long-running saga with furious residents who have staged public protests and even called for a joint meeting , but Wimbledon officials declined to respond. The expansion site is expected to be at the former Wimbledon Park Golf site.
Planning officers deemed the project to be "too big" and likely to result in "physical harm" to the Metropolitan Open Lan, but came to the conclusion that the public benefits outweigh the cons. Aside from the economic benefits like increased ticket sales,...

Wimbledon residents have slammed the All England Club's plans to push for the expansion project of constructing 38 new grass courts, which they termed 'tennis Disneyland'.
Two years ago, Wimbledon submitted proposals for its project called the Aeltc Wimbledon Park Project to the local council as part of its 2030 vision of transforming the site. The project aims to build 38 tennis courts and an 8,000-seater court with a retractable roof, called The Parkland Show Court, near a golf course.
Wimbledon says this will seamlessly enable the Qualifying event to be held on-site for the first time, and support The Championships for main draw matches , player practice, and new junior events.
In addition, it intends to increase the daily spectator count in qualifying and main draw events. Among other notable upsides include providing a 9.4-hectare public park and enhancing biodiversity. However, furious residents have opposed these plans and are planning to stage...

Determining what the sexiest sport is at any given time may come down to the players themselves instead of what happens on the pitch, on the field, or on the court. In Luca Guadagnino's upcoming seductive drama "Challengers," stars Zendaya, Mike Faist ("West Side Story"), and Josh O'Connor ("The Crown") bring their undeniable chemistry to the world of tennis to help add a little spice to a game that prides itself on tradition and sportsmanship. Judging by the playful seduction going on in the trailer, what happens on the baseline looks to be a lot less important than what's going down in the bedroom.
As a rising star that looks poised for greatness and grand slam success, Zendaya's character Tashi has all eyes on her, including the attention of two suitors looking to take the competition to the next level. For passionate tennis fans (myself included), Tashi could be...

The film, heading into production Tuesday after nearly a decade in development, is based on an original story by Schnabel. It unfolds over eight days of sleep-deprived chaos and follows Jack (Schnabel), a down-on-his-luck fitness expert living with his mother in Los Angeles, who takes a maniacal swing at fame and fortune, trying to realize his version of the American dream. Julia Fox, Steven Van Zandt and Taylour Paige are also set to star. Details with regard to the characters the new additions to the cast will be playing have not been disclosed.
Schnabel, Kaye and Jeremy Steckler are producing, with George Paaswell serving as executive producer.
Dorff recently appeared in Potsy Ponciroli’s Western Old Henry, and on Fox’s Deputy. He’s also previously been seen in films including I’ll Find You, Leatherface, The Iceman, Somewhere, Public Enemies, World Trade Center, Cold Creek Manor, Zoolander, Blade and I Shot Andy Warhol. Additional TV credits include True Detective and Star.
McEnroe, the former pro tennis player, currently narrates Netflix’s coming-of-age comedy series Never Have I Ever. He’s previously appeared in films including Ocean’s Eight, Freak Show, Jack and Jill, You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, Wimbledon, Anger Management and Mr. Deeds, and on such series as Kenan, 30 Rock and Curb Your Enthusiasm. During his career in tennis, he established himself as the only male player to win upwards of 70 titles across singles and doubles competitions.
Gershon will soon be seen in the thriller Emily the Criminal from Roadside Attractions and Vertical Entertainment, which premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. She’s also appeared in such films as Rifkin’s Festival, Cagefighter, American Dresser, The Little Mermaid, Blockers, 9/11, Staten Island Summer, Killer Joe, P.S. During his 40-year career as a cinematographer, Robert Elswit has shot movies in practically every genre: “The Hand That Rocks The Cradle,” “Syriana,” “Good Night and Good Luck,” two “Mission: Impossible” films, and six with director Paul Thomas Anderson, including “Boogie Nights” and “Magnolia.” He took home an Oscar in 2008 for PTA’s “There Will Be Blood.”
But Elswit had only worked on one sports project before lensing “King Richard,” the biopic starring Will Smith as the father of tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams. Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, the film has been nominated for the Screen Actors Guild award for Best Ensemble Cast (in addition to a solo nod for Smith’s performance) and the Producers Guild Award for Outstanding Producer of a Theatrical Motion Picture, both precursors for the Best Picture Oscar lineup.

For the past two decades, Raphael Benoliel has been Hollywood’s man in France. With more than 40 projects under his belt, the Nice-born Benoliel has turned his Firstep production banner into a kind of one-stop-shop for international shoots, amassing line producer credits on projects as varied as “Les Miserables,” “Stillwater” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”
And if last year might have been Firstep’s busiest year to date following back-to-back shoots of “Emily in Paris,” “John Wick: Chapter 4” and David Fincher’s “The Killer,” this year shows no signs of letting up, which makes the circumstances of Firstep’s founding all the more ironic.

Amazon Prime Video’s epic The Lord of the Rings series won’t arrive until 2022. Thankfully, with its list of new releases for November 2021, Amazon has a pretty major fantasy adaptation to hold us over.
The Wheel of Time is set to premiere on Nov. 19 and will bring Robert Jordan’s massive fantasy universe to life. Rosamund Pike stars as Moiraine, a powerful magic-user who guides five young people on a perilous journey around the world. One of them just might be the reincarnation of the Dragon, a powerful entity who could save the world…or destroy it.

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss if it’s advantage Smith in the Best Actor race.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday, Timothee Chalamet fans are ready to have a great weekend with the long-awaited releases of both “Dune” and “The French Dispatch,” and we’re fresh off a major awards season moment: the debut of a new “King Richard” trailer complete with Beyonce’s Best Original Song contender “Be Alive.” What a time to… be alive? I’ve been in on “King Richard” since its Telluride Film Festival premiere and the new teaser does little to dim my enthusiasm. It’s selling the movie I saw — a rousing crowd-pleaser with a huge Will Smith performance just sitting there waiting to win Best Actor.

Paul Bettany is one proud papa. The 50-year-old actor gave fans a glimpse into his family life on Monday, June 7 by sharing rare photos of his sons on Instagram. One of the sweet snapshots showed the WandaVision star smiling alongside his 17-year-old son Stellan, who he shares with his wife actress Jennifer Connelly, on the teen's high school graduation day. "So that happened," Paul captioned the image. "The short version is that Stellan graduated and I cried like a baby." The major moment led the celebrity to take a trip down memory lane, posting a photo of himself holding a baby Stellan on what appeared to be the set of his 2004 movie Wimbledon. "Here's...

On the surface, Paul Bettany’s 2004 romantic comedy, Wimbledon, didn’t set the world on fire, but the experience just so happened to introduce the English actor to a fellow cast member by the name of Jon Favreau. A few years later, Favreau called up Bettany and asked if he’d perform the voice role of Jarvis, Tony Stark’s A.I. assistant in Favreau’s Iron Man, which set the Marvel Cinematic Universe in motion. Thirteen years and another six movies later, Bettany finds himself co-starring as Vision in Disney+’s WandaVision, alongside Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff.

Another month of avoiding social contact lies ahead, which means our old pal Netflix is likely to keep us company a little more than usual in the warm month of June. If you’re planning to close the curtains, pop the popcorn and binge until you can’t feel feelings anymore, the streaming service will certainly have you covered.
June will see the return of 13 Reasons Why for its fourth and final season, Queer Eye will be back for another a cathartic cryfest, a new season of F Is For Family also awaits, as do further blocks of Ryan Murphy’s The Politician and German time-bending sci-fi series, Dark. Elsewhere, Spike Lee brings a stacked cast back to Vietnam in search of lost treasure in Da 5 Bloods, while Eurovision gets the Hollywood treatment thanks to Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams, who are playing Iceland’s hopeful favourites in Netflix...

Tennis great John McEnroe has been playing himself in movies such as “Mr. Deeds” and “Wimbledon” for almost 20 years, but he was well aware he was a “left-field” choice of narrator for Netflix’s “Never Have I Ever,” a coming-of-age comedy about an Indian American teenager. In fact, he was counting on the shock value.
“I was hopeful that people would look at this and go, ‘Whoa, why the hell is John McEnroe doing this?’” he says.
McEnroe’s gruff delivery of some pretty woke lines is instantly recognizable in the 10-part series, which launched April 27. “This is Devi Vishwakumar,” McEnroe booms in episode one. “She’s a 15-year-old Indian American girl from Sherman Oaks, California, and it’s her first year of sophomore year. And I am legendary tennis player John McEnroe. Wow, I look great there,” he quips against archive footage of his matches.

The deal expands the relationship between Topic, Penna and Morrison who recently collaborated on a scripted anthology series which will be announced soon.

Said Penna and Morrison: “We’re beyond excited to be working so closely with Topic. They truly support their creative partners and tell the type of stories people need to hear. Topic is a studio with something to say and we’re very much looking forward joining the conversation.

British actors tend to have more longevity than American ones, and Imelda Staunton is the perfect example. After a long and fruitful theater and television career in the UK, Staunton really broke out across the pond in Mike Leigh’s “Vera Drake,” which earned her an Oscar nomination. But it did more than that: According to Staunton, “Vera Drake: is the reason she got cast in what is now her most recognizable role: The universally loathed “Harry Potter” villainess in a pink dress, Dolores Umbridge.
“Dolores Umbridge is just part of a wonderful franchise, and I’m just one of the many characters who can hopefully frighten a couple of children on the street,” Staunton said in an interview with IndieWire. “It was wonderful to be part of that, but I wouldn’t have got that part without ‘Vera Drake,’ which absolutely upped my profile. ‘Vera Drake’ was the one that did it for me.

Sverrir Gudnason is superb as the ice-cool Swede struggling to contain a cauldron of emotion – and Shia Labeouf’s not bad either as his voluble opponent
A tale of sporting rivalry is given a brooding, introspective Scandinavian twist by Janus Metz, hitherto best known for his award-winning documentary Armadillo. Stoic, seemingly unflappable Björn Borg (Sverrir Gudnason) and volatile, temperamental brat John McEnroe (Shia Labeouf) competed for the Wimbledon title in 1980. On paper, it was a clash of opposites. But in fact, this film argues that the two men had more in common than anyone suspected at the time. Ice-man Borg, the main focus of this film, was in fact a volcano; his obsession with detail, his superstitions, were all part of the meticulous control mechanism he constructed to prevent the eruptions of anger that so tarnished McEnroe’s early reputation.
Whether or not you know the outcome, this is a cracking watch.

At the finals of Wimbledon in 1980, two men—a placid, methodical swede, Björn Borg, and a vocal, emotional American, John McEnroe—went head to head in a grudge-match that is still on the minds of every fan of the sport. Juan Martin del Potro just ruined the match-up everyone wanted to see at the 2017 Us Open—a semi-final pitting Rafa Nadal against Roger Federer. Despite both being in their thirties, their rivalry has never stopped. What’s intriguing, however, is how amiable it has always been (or seemed to be). With the quieter Pete Sampras and emotional Andre Agassi a generation earlier, the same was true despite their differing personalities and server versus returner billing. You could call the former a product of the latter and the latter a product of the explosive combat before them between “ice cold” Björn Borg and New York “superbrat” John McEnroe. The glaring difference of course is that their iconic war was augmented off-court by the media. It may have only really lasted two years, but the effect it had on the sport of tennis was permanent.

It’s safe to say that “Borg/McEnroe,” which opened the Toronto International Film Festival on Thursday night, makes its ambitions clear from the start. The film from director Janus Metz opens with a title-card quote from Andre Agassi (who otherwise has nothing to do with this particular tennis story) that concludes, “Every match is a life in miniature.” Make that two lives in miniature, because “Borg/McEnroe” sets out to encapsulate the troubled journeys of tennis stars Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe within one epic match. That came in the 1980 Wimbledon final, when the emotionless Swede was going for a record.

Shia Labeouf is hardly a dead ringer for a young John McEnroe — he looks more like one of Royal Tenenbaum’s grandchildren than anything else — but it’s hard to imagine anyone more perfect for the part. As a rising superstar in the early ’80s, the hotheaded McEnroe was as famous for his mid-match tantrums as he was for his tennis. He was one of the most gifted natural talents the game had ever seen, but he would erupt at a moment’s notice, self-destructing on some of the world’s biggest stages.
The parallels between McEnroe and the volatile young actor who plays him in “Borg/McEnroe” are obvious enough to make themselves, but the saving grace of Janus Metz’s relentlessly self-serious sports drama is that the film doesn’t take its casting for granted — it refuses to rest on the meta-textual fun of watching one explosive celebrity play another.

It was "the IceBorg versus the SuperBrat," in the eyes of the world: the 1980 Wimbledon final pitting Björn Borg, a four-time champion who never lost his cool in a game, against John McEnroe, who seemingly couldn't keep his cool in a walk-in freezer with Isaac Hayes on his headphones. Janus Metz's Borg/McEnroe paints a very different picture, diving into both men's psyches to find them all but identical, differing only in their outward manifestations of relentless pressure. An acting-forward sports film capable of engaging viewers who don't know their 30-loves from their birdies or hat tricks, it has mainstream...

Chronicling the 1980 Wimbledon match between tennis titans Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe. And in the process, director Janus Metz hands volatile actor Shia Labeouf a perfect role.

Shia Labeouf hasn’t been shy about his affection for tennis giant John McEnroe, so his starring part in Janus Metz’s Toronto International Film Festival opener “Borg/McEnroe” feels like a particularly special gift for the actor. Primarily fixed on the eponymous Wimbledon match played between McEnroe and all-time great Björn Borg (played by Sverrir Gudnason), the drama also finds room to explore how both men rose to their positions in the sport, aided by seemingly unshakable perceptions by the public (that McEnroe was crazy, that Borg was a machine without emotion).
From the start, Labeouf has voiced his pleasure at taking on the role, one that he sees so much of himself — and his own public perceptions — inside of. In an interview with Variety last October, Labeouf said, “[McEnroe and I have] everything in common. Passionate. Perfectionist. Narcissistic. I’m a bit of a caricature also. You look for parallels in your life,...

John McEnroe is a misunderstood guy, in sum an artist. This was actor Shia Labeouf’s assessment of the tennis champ he portrays in Borg/McEnroe, tonight’s opening-night film at the Toronto International Film Festival. It focuses on the epic showdown between McEnroe and Swedish tennis master Bjorn Borg (Sverrir Gudnason) at Wimbledon in 1980. Watching McEnroe play was akin to “Amadeus — he’s like the Mozart character,” said Labeouf. A guy who didn’t process his genius, “he…...

Shia Labeouf is perfectly cast as superbrat tennis ace John McEnroe, but this replay of his 1980 Wimbledon final with Björn Borg fails to create drama
This tennis film feels like a two-hour baseline rally, and it’s not just the rackets that are made of wood. It is all about the allegedly fascinating psychological face-off between supercool Swede Björn Borg and the superbrat challenger from New York, John McEnroe – played respectively by Sverrir Gudnason and Shia Labeouf. It culminates in their first, titanic Wimbledon confrontation in the 1980 final. That really was an unbearably tense contest, but at the end of this film my nails remained salon-fresh. The awful truth was that for all their rivalry and wildly different styles, there wasn’t any needle between these two men personally, no tension, nothing outside the tennis court for us to get excited about.
Really, almost any other pairing of characters from...
