Sbtrkt, the electronic music project of English producer Aaron Jerome, has announced his third album, The Rat Road, which will be released on May 5th. As a preview, he’s shared its lead single “Waiting.”
Sbtrkt’s first full-length offering since 2016’s Save Yourself, The Rat Road boasts a wall-to-wall effort by the producer, who played every instrument and recorded, produced, and mixed the entire project himself. In a statement, he called it his “most sonically ambitious record to create, following my own musical path, which isn’t based on others’ perceptions of what Sbtrkt should be.”
He continued by expanding on the album’s relation to “the rat race,” sharing, “It’s partly based on my own challenging experiences within the music industry and life generally, though I realized the idea is not isolated from a much wider feeling of exhaustion.”

Jow Zhi Wei’s feature debut “Tomorrow is a Long Time” which screens in the Generation 14plus program of the Berlinale, is a personal portrait of the working class milieu, and the preassure the hard-labour puts on people who maintain the industry. A large part of inspiration comes from the director’s upbringing, but as he would underline later, only in terms of understanding how fragile the lives of those who struggle to survive is. Just like in his shorts, the topic of family relationships and closeness to death play a significant role in the script.
Jow Zhi Wei studied at Le Fresnoy (France) and Lasalle College of the Arts (Singapore), and was the alumni of the Golden Horse Film Academy in 2010, under the mentorship of Hou Hsiao-hsien who is one of his biggest influences. Before venturing into the world of features, he has made three short films:...

Fandom can be a viciously opinionated part of pop culture. Make us fall in love with a franchise and quickly watch as we designate ourselves as the chosen experts of everything about it. This passion often means we hold strong opinions about the way things should play out on screen, but rarely do we ever get the chance to make our versions of the story come to life.
Fandom also has a tendency to latch onto moments in movies or shows that seem drastically overdone or out of place. We love ridiculous scenes that we can quickly turn into fodder for the meme mill. James Van Der Beek ugly crying on a dock in "Dawson's Creek," Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson screaming at each other in "Marriage Story," Joaquin Phoenix dancing down the stairs in "Joker," and if you really want to dive deep into the meme world, Robert Pattinson...

The following contains spoilers from Monday’s episode of Quantum Leap. Proceed accordingly.
This week’s Quantum Leap, titled “Let Them Play,” placed Ben in the body of a high school basketball coach named Carlos Mendéz, whose trans daughter hoped to play with the team. Terry Hall, the frontman of influential U.K. ska band the Specials and later a member of new wave pop act Fun Boy Three, has died. He was 63.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing, following a brief illness, of Terry, our beautiful friend, brother and one of the most brilliant singers, songwriters and lyricists this country has ever produced,” said a tweeted statement from the Special’s official account. “Terry was a wonderful husband and father and one of the kindest, funniest, and most genuine of souls. His music and his performances encapsulated the very essence of life… the joy, the pain, the humour, the fight for justice, but mostly the love.”
As the lead singer of the politically and socially conscious Specials, Hall achieved U.K. fame and cult status through songs such as “Ghost Town,” “Gangsters” and “Too Much Too Young.

Terry Hall, the longtime voice of legendary ska group The Specials has died after what the band termed a brief illness. He was 63.
Hall and the Specials reached their widest appeal with the haunting, socially conscious “Ghost Town,” which spent three weeks at No. 1 on the U.K. singles charts in 1981. The song was a commentary on economic strife in Margaret Thatcher’s England and the social unrest of the era, including riots that year in Britain. It was named “Single of the Year” by all three of the major UK music magazines.
The Specials were formed in the late ’70s by songwriter/keyboardist Dammers, vocalist Tim Strickland, guitarist/vocalist Lynval Golding, drummer Silverton Hutchinson and bassist Horace Panter (a.k.a. Sir Horace Gentleman). Strickland was replaced by Hall shortly after the band’s formation. They were at the vanguard of the the 2 Tone ska revival of the late 1970s in Britain,...

Amir Naderi’s 1984 “The Runner” is often lauded as the first movie to emerge from post-revolutionary Iran and for having one of the best child performances of all time with Madjid Niroumand. It’s now receiving a new restoration that will debut at Film Forum on October 28 and run through November 10, with Naderi and Niroumand appearing in person for screenings. It will then make its way around the country. Exclusively on IndieWire, watch the new trailer below.
In “The Runner,” an illiterate 11-year-old orphan (Niroumand), living alone in an abandoned tanker in the Iranian port city of Abadan, survives by shining shoes, selling water, and diving for deposit bottles, while being bullied by both adults and competing older kids. But he finds solace by dreaming about departing cargo ships and airplanes and by running — seemingly to nowhere.

It’s always fun to find one of your favorite actors in a horror movie. It’s especially fun to notice an actor in an upcoming horror movie, move to check their IMDb and notice a litany of other horror movies you’d maybe forgotten they starred in. But to go and watch all of said actors horror movies in sequential order? I know, I know. Somebody better stop me because I’m a wild person with no regard for danger. C’mon, let’s get nuts.
Justin Long is the subject of this completist exercise in honor of his not one but two recently released horror movies: Barbarian (In theaters) and House of Darkness (Currently available for rent on VOD). I’ve always considered him an underrated and charismatic actor with the ability to walk the line between “cool guy” and “total dork” as they are so often the same in real life.

Before joining Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, Geoffrey Rush already had an Oscar and BAFTA under his belt. For the first 20 years of his career, the Australian actor won critical acclaim by portraying a controversial writer in "Quills," a tormented pianist in "Shine," and numerous Shakespeare characters, but he became a star when he took on the role of a cursed, undead pirate.
Although Rush's work was often celebrated by critics in the mid and late '90s, he was far from a household name. However, that changed when he stepped into the role of Captain Hector Barbossa. The mutinous, zombified, pirate became one of the most popular characters in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise and introduced Rush to mainstream audiences across the globe, but the actor never expected the character to return after the first film.

Welcome to the latest installment in our regular Movies You May Have Missed series here on Nerdly, in which I highlight some of, what I think, are the best movies that have flown under the radar of many or have been “forgotten” in the intervening years since its release. This time round it’s At Your Service, aka Servitude, a 2011 Canadian comedy about the restaurant industry.
Stars: Joe Dinicol, Rachel Skarsten, John Bregar, Enrico Colantoni, David Foley, Margot Kidder, Lauren Collins, Aaron Ashmore, Kristen Hager, Linda Kash | Written by Michael Sparaga | Directed by Warren P Sonoda

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Superman & Lois‘ Season 2 finale, “Waiting for Superman.” So if you haven’t watched yet, maybe your Bizarro World double can fill you in.] Worlds collided, marriages collapsed and secrets came out all over Smallville this week as we bid goodbye to Superman & Lois for the summer. But before any happy endings could happen, the delightfully rehabilitated Tal-Rho (Adam Rayner) helped a power-drained Clark (Tyler Hoechlin) harness the strength of the sun to vanquish Ally Allston (Rya Kihlstedt) and separate our world from its parasitic Bizarro twin. Meanwhile, the rest of the Kents, John Henry Irons (Wolé Parks), and his now steel-suited daughter Natalie (Tayler Buck) provided their always heroic support from the ground (and air), eventually saving the day and sending a message to the citizens of Earth that the Man of Steel was back and better than ever. Back in 2005 a movie was released that might have made a lot of people cringe while those that have been a part of the food and hospitality industry might have been pumping their fists in validation and even remembering moments when life was mirrored by cinema. Those that have worked in this industry know very well how tough it can be and how unappreciative those they serve can be at times. Director Linda Mendoza has more than three decades years of production experience across scripted and specials content, and ironically it was HBO’s “Greater Tuna,” which she worked on in 1984, that best prepared her for Amazon Prime Video’s “Yearly Departed.”
“Greater Tuna” featured two lead actors playing all of the roles of the inhabitants of the small-town of Greater Tuna, Texas in the comedy project, which meant its visual style needed to feature a lot of locked-off shots, with a heavy post-production lift to insert the same two actors into a scene multiple times, in each role. The phrase “the calm before the storm” has always been an interesting one because it posits that storms are inevitable and periods of calm are nothing but an illusion. It doesn’t matter how much work you’ve put into a situation to create peace if the other shoe is destined to drop. And the more you live in that nihilistic headspace, the more you render the storm a self-fulfilling prophecy. You become driven by fear in the unknown until you become the very thing that all others fear. You take before others take from you. You kill before others can kill you. This belief that your own destruction is just upon the horizon turns you into a destroyer who’s made the storm into its misguided rendition of the calm.

Following the global success of 2014’s “Godzilla” and this year’s “Kong: Skull Island,” comes the next chapter in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ cinematic MonsterVerse: an epic action adventure that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history.
The film, which began principal photography on June 19, is being directed by Michael Dougherty (“Krampus”), and stars Oscar nominees Vera Farmiga (“Up in the Air,” “The Conjuring” films), and Ken Watanabe (“The Last Samurai”) and Sally Hawkins (“Blue Jasmine”), both reprising their “Godzilla” roles; Kyle Chandler (“The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Manchester by the Sea”); Millie Bobby Brown (“Stranger Things”) in her feature film debut; Bradley Whitford (“Get Out”); Thomas Middleditch (HBO’s “Silicon Valley”); Charles Dance (HBO’s “Game of Thrones”); O’Shea Jackson Jr. (“Straight Outta Compton”); Aisha Hinds (“Star Trek Into Darkness”); and Golden Globe nominee Zhang Ziyi (“Memoirs of a Geisha,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”).
The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
Dougherty directs from a script he wrote with Zach Shields. The film is being produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Brian Rogers and Thomas Tull, with Barry H. Waldman, Zach Shields, Yoshimitsu Banno and Kenji Okuhira serving as executive producers and Alexandra Mendes co-producing for Legendary.
Behind the scenes, Dougherty’s creative team includes director of photography Lawrence Sher, whose past credits include “War Dogs” and “Godzilla,” for which he handled additional photography; production designer Scott Chambliss (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” “Star Trek Into Darkness”); editor Roger Barton (“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” the “Transformers” films); costume designer Louise Migenbach (the “X-Men” and “Hangover” films); and Oscar-winning VFX supervisor Guillaume Rocheron (“Godzilla,” “Ghost in the Shell,” and part of the Oscar-winning team behind “Life of Pi ”).
Filming is taking place mainly in Atlanta, Georgia. A presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, the film is currently scheduled for release in March 2019, and will be distributed in 3D and 2D and in select IMAX theaters by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, except in Japan, where it will be distributed by Toho Co., Ltd.

Production begins this week on location in Atlanta for the new comedy “Tag,” directed by Jeff Tomsic (Comedy Central’s “Broad City”) for New Line Cinema. The film’s starring ensemble cast is led by Ed Helms (The “Hangover” movies, “We’re the Millers”), Jake Johnson (TV’s “New Girl”), and Hannibal Buress (“Neighbors”), with Jon Hamm (“Baby Driver,” TV’s “Mad Men”) and Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner (“The Hurt Locker, “The Town”).

But he knows they’re coming…and he’s ready. Based on a true story, “Tag” shows how far some guys will go to be the last man standing.
The film also stars Annabelle Wallis (“The Mummy”), Rashida Jones (TV’s “Parks and Recreation”), Isla Fisher (“Now You See Me”) and Leslie Bibb (“Iron Man 2”).
Tomsic directs from a screenplay written by Mark Steilen (TV’s “Mozart in the Jungle”) and Rob McKittrick (“Waiting”), based on the Wall Street Journal article entitled “It Takes Planning, Caution to Avoid Being It.” The film is produced by Todd Garner, Mark Steilen and Sean Robins, with Hans Ritter serving as executive producer. The creative filmmaking team includes director of photography Larry Blanford, editor Josh Crockett, production designer David Sandefur, and costume designer Denise Wingate.

I tried to stay silent yesterday when I read about an Overboard reboot but I cannot stand by and watch this happen. It’s like every shred of my youth is getting ripped out of me with these remakes. First Dirty Dancing with Abigal Breslin on network TV and now Overboard with Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez? Who the hell is Eugenio Derbez? And every single time I see Anna Faris I think of three things: Her Cameron Diaz based character in Lost in Translation, all of the Scary movies, and her in the movie Waiting. That’s it. That’s all. This is where I'm supposed to summarize the past year, find some overaching theme or thread running through my choices, spot trends, or something along those lines. Instead it's just another mea culpa for my continuing and accelerating estrangement from mainstream pop music. Don't mind me, I'm just a grumpy old fart. But these twenty new albums made me less grumpy.
1. Diiv: Is the Is Are (Captured Tracks)
I enjoyed their first album, and far from a sophomore slump, their second is even better. Sure, I'm heavily predisposed to love bands that conjure a moody '80s vibe with thrumming bass, chiming guitar jangle, and submerged vocals, but this is greater than the sum of those parts, simultaneously updating the sound while tapping into a new level of melodicism for this band.
2. David Bowie: Black Star (Sony)
I wrote about this at length. What can I add now that...

He wears a mask, but he’s not Batman. He wears a red suit, but he’s not Spider-Man. He has regenerative powers, but he’s not Wolverine. He is Deadpool. You know that guy that we’ve all encountered at some point in our lives, the guy that says whatever he wants, is charming yet a jerk at the same time, can make the entire room laugh without so much as a hint of effort—that’s Deadpool.
The comic book world knows Deadpool best as “the Merc with a Mouth.” Actor Ryan Reynolds has been lobbying for a standalone Deadpool movie for some time, but it wasn’t until the Internet caught glimpse of some leaked test footage that the clamor began. First-time director Tim Miller helms Deadpool and impressively crafts a film that is a mix of near perfect comic self-awareness, gruesome violence, and vulgarity that matches...

The New Year is just now starting to feel for real. Folks are remembering to write 2016 on the check they sign and, who knows, maybe even starting to pay attention to the upcoming election season. Well, maybe. But before we get too serious about life let us savor some silliness. Deadpool is a film about a seriously messed up dude named Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds). He was a soldier. Then he was a mercenary. Eventually he becomes the superhero called Deadpool – beloved by geekdom the world over. This film is his origin story.
Deadpool was written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, best known for Zombieland (2009), so they know the funny. It is based on the popular comic character work created by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicleza. Tim Miller makes his feature film directorial debut here.

David Koechner has been a longtime favorite of mine—from his work on various television series like Saturday Night Live, The Office, American Dad, Reno 911!, The Goldbergs, and Another Period, to his roles in great films like Snakes on a Plane, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Waiting…, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and of course my personal favorite, Anchorman—I have always appreciated Koechner’s offbeat approach to comedy and his ability to connect with audiences in hilarious, but often understated, ways throughout the years.
Koechner co-stars in the upcoming zombie-infused comedy, Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, as the wonderfully weird Scout Leader Rogers, who gets attacked by the undead (that’s no spoiler either, as the actor in his zombified state has been featured prominently in the marketing campaign thus far), and we continue to see him pop up throughout the story as it unfolds.

I don't usually wake up in the morning and listen to electronic music, that's more something my roommate likes to do, but it's also not every day a new trailer drops for We Are Your Friends, a romantic drama based in the Los Angeles electronic music scene. In other words, I allowed myself to do so for this occasion, and this occasion only. We Are Your Friends stars Zac Efron as Cole, an aspiring 23-year-old DJ who spends his days scheming with his childhood friends and his nights working on the one track that will set the world on fire. All of this changes though when he meets a charismatic but damaged older DJ named James (Wes Bentley), who takes him under his wing. Things get complicated, however, when Cole starts falling for James' much younger girlfriend, Sophie (Emily Ratajkowski). With Cole's forbidden relationship intensifying and his friendships unraveling, he must choose between love,...

For as much as Jack Black and Will Ferrell have been seen in some of the same movies, they've never really shared anything other than a short moment in any of their films. Well that all looked like it was about to change in 2013 when Tag Brothers was first announced over at New Line. Two years later, it looks like the stars are finally aligning for the two comedy titans to face off with two other adversaries in the still active project, as a scribe has been hired! So who's ready for a game of Tag at the film's writer's desk? None other than Waiting's Rob McKittrick! Variety broke the news that the man who started his career ripping on the service industry has turned his focus on this comedy concept that sprang forth from a Wall Street Journal article. The filmmaker has signed up to helm "Work Wife" for New Line. Every year, there are a few actors who break out in a big way. (Think: Melissa McCarthy in Bridesmaids.) The actress immediately turned her supporting role into several big hits at the box office. And then there are actors like Isla Fisher, who made a big splash in Wedding Crashers, but failed to become a stand out on her own. We love her, we support her, but we want more for her. She and the nine other names on this list are those break out stars that we wish had bigger careers.

Dear Ryan Reynolds,
Hi. How are things? I'm guessing, since you are a successful movie star who has made millions of dollars and is generally understood to be in the 99th percentile of attractive people in the world, that things are, overall, going well. Congratulations on everything, including last week's debuts of both "R.I.P.D." and "Turbo." On a larger scale — the scale of life, you might say — things are going swimmingly for you. (Scarlett Johansson And Blake Lively? What? Come on, dude. High five.) And that's great. It's important to keep perspective.
As a loyal fan of your work, however, I want to do my part to help you get out of this, um, "slump" you're in currently, career-wise.
If I may: It seems like you may not care as much as you once did.
To be clear, I don't mean "care" as in "You lack the passion for acting...

Vancouver native Ryan Reynolds is doing double duty in theatres this week with two very different films, one in which he plays a snail, and the other he’s a recently deceased cop saving the planet from destruction. For Reynolds fans, that dichotomy perfectly sums up the actors’ career.
It’s hard to pin Ryan Reynolds down. He’s been the goofy guy in Van Wilder and Waiting…, the rom-com charmer in The Proposal and Definitely, Maybe, the buff-bodied vampire hunter in Blade: Trinity and the equally ripped dad in The Amityville Horror. And last, but not least, he's the Green Lantern.
With Turbo and R.I.P.D., it’s unofficially Ryan Reynolds weekend at the box office. Which of the actor’s movies is your favourite? Hit the jump to cast your vote!

And in action comedy "R.I.P.D.," based on a comic book, he's a rookie in a department for undead cops who partners with grizzled ghostly lawman Jeff Bridges.
And yet, a quarter-century into the 36-year-old Canadian actor's career, which has included several leading-man roles, we still have to ask: Why isn't Ryan Reynolds a bigger star?
It's not like Reynolds isn't movie-star talented (check out his one-man performance in "Buried"). Or movie-star handsome (he was named People's Sexiest Man Alive a couple years ago). Or movie-star fascinating (his marriages to Scarlett Johansson and Blake Lively have kept him a tabloid fixture). And yet,...
