Sicario is one of Denis Villeneuve and Taylor Sheridan’s hidden gem of a movie with some of the finest actions and thrilling storylines that cinema has ever witnessed. Although its sequel directed by Stefano Sollima did not fare as well, the movie series has nonetheless remained iconic thanks to its contribution to the contemporary action genre.

Ever since the release of its sequel, Day of the Soldado, there have been rumors that a third film is in development with the possibility of Villeneuve returning to direct. However, in a new interview, the Dune director clarified his involvement and stated that if Sheridan is writing the script, the movie is a given success.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today we go down south to talk about Billy Bob Thornton! To do this, we bring in devoted Billy Bob fan, friend, writer, director, and producer Nicholas Gray of Uncompromised Creative.
We have a super-sized B-Side collection today: (deep breath) Homegrown, Daddy and Them, Waking Up in Reno, The Badge, Levity, Chrystal, and Jayne Mansfield’s Car.
Conor makes the observation that Thornton may be a leading man trapped in a character actor’s body, Nicholas marvels at the nuance of Jayne Mansfield’s Car, and I mention liking movies that start with an original sin of sorts. We talk about how Burt Reynolds helped Billy Bob break into the business, the long cultural legs of his film Sling Blade,...

Elijah Wood has but one regret from his experience starring in and producing the new film No Man of God — that he didn’t get to meet the man he plays, acclaimed FBI profiler Bill Hagmaier.
Though Hagmaier, who served in the agency’s Behavior Analysis Unit before becoming chief of the FBI’s National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crimes, is far from a household name, he became somewhat of a legend in his field thanks to his work with notorious serial killer Ted Bundy. Hagmaier spent hours over the course of years interviewing Bundy during his final ...

‘His Dark Materials’ Gets Some Much-Needed Levity Thanks to a Singing Lin-Manuel Miranda in “Armour”
Hey, did you know His Dark Materials was based off a children’s book series? You wouldn’t guess based on the somber tone of the HBO series, which has become so self-serious that it almost fails to find the fun in talking animals and armor-wearing polar bears. But in the fourth episode, “Armour,” in swoops Lin-Manuel […]

AMC Networks beat the Street in the third quarter of 2018, reporting adjusted earnings per share (Eps) of $2.15 on $697 million in revenue. Compare those with Wall Street’s forecasts: $1.80 in Eps on $694.29 million in revenue, per a consensus compiled by Yahoo Finance.
Overall, the publicly traded corporation’s revenues over the 90 days that ended on Sept. 30, 2018 rose 7.5 percent. We can break that down as growth of 3.5 percent at the national networks and a big 34.6 percent increase internationally. While that’s a big disparity on a percentage basis, AMC’s national networks group is still almost 4x as large as the global arm.
Over the three months measured for these results, AMC’s national networks saw a 5 percent increase in distribution revenue, which was mostly thanks to increased subscription sales and greater content licensing returns.
It’s worth pointing out here that most of Season 4 of “Better Call Saul” aired during the summer quarter.

It seemed this year that if any artist was due for the retrospective treatment, it was "Unbroken" cinematographer Roger Deakins. While I of course did not address all of the 50-plus films he has shot throughout his illustrious career during a recent extended interview, I settled on a few in particular that I think represent a nice cross-section of his work. Each of them — "Nineteen Eighty-Four," "Sid and Nancy," "Barton Fink," "The Shawshank Redemption," "Kundun," "The Man Who Wasn't There" and "The Village" — will get their own space in the next few days. 2001 was an interesting year for Roger Deakins. With John Nash biopic "A Beautiful Mind" — the only time he's ever worked with director Ron Howard — he shot the year's Best Picture winner, while his on-going collaboration with the Coen brothers' yielded "The Man Who Wasn't There" and the chance to work on a cinematographer's dream: a film noir.

After having seen Anthony Hopkins earn a number of rave reviews (and some very bad ones) for his portrayal of Alfred Hitchcock in (the aptly named) ‘Hitchcock’, I got to thinking about the range of roles he has played over the years. This, in turn, made me think about all those Hollywood actors and actresses who have shown huge versatility when it comes to the characters they have played on the big screen.
Many great actors continue to be typecast in similar roles, despite their fantastic ability. For example, Jack Nicholson will always play characters who are a bit crazy (Jack Torrance in The Shining, The Joker in Batman, Dr. Buddy Rydel in Anger Management and Randle McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) and Morgan Freeman will always play the trustworthy wise man (God in Bruce/Evan Almighty, Lucius Fox in Nolan’s Batman Trilogy, Detective Lt.

When you see Morgan Freeman, maybe you see God. Or the president of the United States. Or Nelson Mandela, or a kindly old convict, chauffeur, boxing trainer or superhero's business manager. Because he's played all those roles, and he always seems to have the answers to everything, doesn't he? And that voice! We'd buy a bag of broken light bulbs if he only narrated the commercial.

Screen Media will release the Mean Streets-flavored independent drama White Irish Drinkers on Blu-ray and DVD on July 12.
Nick Thurston (l.) and Geoff Wigdor are brothers...and White Irish Drinkers.
In Brooklyn, 1975, 18-year-old Brian Leary (Nick Thurston, TV’s Reviving Ophelia) is killing time, pulling off petty crimes with his street tough older brother Danny (Geoff Wigdor, Levity), whom he both idolizes and fears. He doesn’t really want to be a criminal, but he doesn’t share the dreams of his old friends from their working class neighborhood either. So, looking for a way out of their situation, the siblings come up with a seemingly nutty plan: book the Rolling Stones for a concert in a local theater, sell tickets for $50 apiece in cash, and steal the money on the night of show.
Written and directed by John Gray and also starring Karen Allen (Scrooged), Stephen Lang (Avatar...

This is top-flight journalism right here. Jokingly, Defamer is pointing the finger of death at Billy Bob Thornton after the untimely passing of Bernie Mac. No, the site isn't saying Bbt is next, but rather that he's kind of a grim reaper.
Relying on an astute commenter from a Hollywood Elsewhere story about Bernie's death, the reader points out, "Strange how many Billy Bob Thornton co-stars have died prematurely ([John] Ritter, Bernie Mac, J.T. Walsh, Heath Ledger.) Thank goodness Morgan Freeman (Levity) and Shia (Eagle Eye) survived their crashes and Patrick Swayze (Waking Up in Reno) is coming back from cancer or we'd be talking about the Billy Bob Curse."
Well, that's certainly sobering, isn't it? And tacky. Let's not forget tacky.
But Defamer's follow-up, that Jim Varney also passed away shortly after working with Thornton on Daddy and Them all but confirms it, right?
Ok, maybe that, too, is just an unfortunate coincidence.

Hollywood actor Jake Gyllenhaal is so smitten with his belle Kirsten Dunst, he's desperate to marry her. Pals of the loving pair tell American tabloid the Star that Gyllenhaal, who starred opposite Friends beauty Jennifer Aniston in the 2002 flick The Good Girl, is begging Spider-Man stunner Dunst to go shopping for an engagement ring. But the 20-year-old actress is firmly turning down her beau, 22, because, although she loves him, she fears she's too young to commit. Pop diva Britney Spears made herself very unpopular with Robert Redford at the Sundance Film Festival last week by her rude behavior. Spears, who was at the independent film event in order to make more cinematic contacts to boost her big screen career, attended a screening of the new Holly Hunter movie Levity and made her presence felt. During the film, Britney and her huge entourage chatted loudly and talked on cell phones and committed the ultimate faux-pas - they left before the movie ended. An eyewitness, who observed Redford scowling at the star, says "If looks could kill. Britney would be the deadest pop star in the world."...

A Sony Pictures Classics film starring Billy Bob Thornton as an ex-convict on his way to redemption after serving a 19-year murder sentence will set the stage for the 2003 Sundance Film Festival as the opening-night film in Salt Lake City on Jan. 16. The Ed Solomon-directed Levity also features a name cast of Morgan Freeman, Holly Hunter and Kirsten Dunst. The Park City roster then kicks into gear the next night with the Premiere Category selection The Singing Detective, from Mel Gibson and Bruce Davey's Icon Prods. Gibson also stars in the Keith Gordon-helmed feature, which is about a writer (Robert Downey Jr.) who hallucinates musical numbers and paranoid plots. Robin Wright Penn, Adrien Brody and Katie Holmes round out the cast. Both star-heavy projects are indicative of the other selections in Sundance's Premiere Category, most of which star top-level Hollywood talent. Included in the set is the Larry Charles-helmed Masked and Anonymous, from Intermedia Film and Spitfire Pictures, which stars Bob Dylan as a musician who encounters a cast of characters played by Jessica Lange, Penelope Cruz, Val Kilmer, Jeff Bridges, Luke Wilson, Ed Harris, Angela Bassett and others on his way to a benefit concert after his release from jail. Al Pacino, Tea Leoni, Kim Basinger and Ryan O'Neal turn out in Miramax Films' People I Know from director Daniel Algrant. The drama, set for release next year after a postponement because of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, finds Pacino as a New York publicist who gets drawn into the world of politics and celebrity when his famous actor-client becomes involved in a scandal. The star contingent continues with Lions Gate Films' Confidence, directed by James Foley. Dustin Hoffman, Edward Burns and Andy Garcia topline the story of a con man's latest scam that puts him in debt with the Mafia. Paul Giamatti, Donal Logue, Rachel Weisz and Morris Chestnut round out the cast. Fox Searchlight Pictures has two films in the Premiere Category with Jim Sheridan's In America, starring Samantha Morton and Paddy Considine, and Alex Proyas' Garage Days featuring Kick Gurry, Maya Stange and Pia Miranda.
