Noah Wyle is going back to his roots, with the actor set to star in a medical procedural series that has been ordered at Max.
Variety has learned that Max has given a 15-episode order to the series, currently titled “The Pitt.” Wyle will star and executive produce the show, which is described as “a realistic examination of the challenges facing healthcare workers in today’s America as seen through the lens of the frontline heroes working in a modern-day hospital in Pittsburgh,” per the official logline.
R. Scott Gemmill will serve as showrunner on the series, with John Wells executive producing. The episode of Revisited covering Drag Me to Hell was Written by Cody Hamman, Narrated and Edited by Tyler Nichols, Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Director Sam Raimi’s Drag Me to Hell (watch it Here) isn’t technically one of his Evil Dead movies. There’s no Bruce Campbell, no Necromicon. But it really feels like it’s set in the same world as the Evil Dead franchise. There’s demons, possession, over-the-top fight scenes, disgusting sight gags… and it’s all mixed with a strong dash of humor. Drag Me to Hell may not be as popular as its Evil Dead cousins. But it’s a great horror movie in its own right – and it’s time for it to be Revisited.
After directing three Spider-Man movies in a row, Sam Raimi needed to take a breather. Spider-Man 4 was in development…...

Exclusive: Ryan Phillippe (MacGruber), Mireille Enos (Hanna), Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks) and Taryn Manning (Orange Is the New Black) are the latest additions to Michelle Danner’s courtroom drama, Miranda’s Victim. They join an ensemble led by Abigail Breslin, which also includes Luke Wilson, Andy Garcia and Donald Sutherland, as previously announced.
The film will tell the true story of Trish Weir (Breslin), who in 1963 was kidnapped and brutally raped by Ernesto Miranda. Committed to putting her assailant in prison, Trish’s life is destroyed by America’s legal system as she triggers a law that transforms the nation. Her case notably results in the establishment of the Miranda rights afforded to criminal suspects taken in police custody, to ensure the admissibility of statements made during interrogation, as part of subsequent criminal proceedings.

February kicked off with Sundance wrapping up and then went straight into mainstream awards nominations and predictions for Globes and SAG and well as decidedly non-mainstream Film Bitch Awards nominations (via myself). The Oscar nominations are yet to come but the Academy will be voting to determine them from March 5th-10th. So "freeze" the buzz in a few days time when considering your predictions. Nothing that happens after about the 7th will matter at all to the outcome. Are you excited for the Golden Globes (Tonight!) or is the need for a virtual ceremony killing your usual anticipation?

This past weekend, actressexuals and Pfeiffer pfans were scandalized when Lucas Hedges revealed he had never seen a movie starring Michelle Pfeiffer before working with her on French Exit. I kid, while also admitting I was surprised. Being only two years older than Hedges, I've seen plenty of Pfeiffer movies as have many of my friends, ranging from work by renowned auteurs to blockbuster fare. Hers is a varied filmography. She may have only been nominated thrice for the Oscars, but Michelle Pfeiffer has delivered a fair share of awards-worthy star turns and her range is quite expansive. Equally brilliant in big leading parts and small supporting roles, broad comedy and thrilling drama, Pfeiffer is one of my favorite actresses and I'd love nothing more than to share my adoration with you, dear readers.
With that in mind, let's delve into one of the best performances in her resume.

Michelle Pfeiffer has signed on to star as Betty Ford in the upcoming Showtime series “The First Lady,” Variety has learned. In addition, Susanne Bier has signed on to direct and executive produce the anthology series.
Formerly known as “First Ladies,” the show is described as a reframing of American leadership, told through the lens of the women at the heart of the White House. Pfeiffer joins previously announced cast member Viola Davis, who will star as Michelle Obama. The first season of the series will also explore the life of Eleanor Roosevelt, with that role yet to be cast.
Ford was the First Lady of the United States from 1974 to 1977 as the wife of President Gerald Ford. She was active in social policy and set a precedent as a politically active presidential spouse and one of the most candid first ladies in history, commenting on every hot-button issue of the time.

“It’s an honor just to be nominated” is the overused line that many Oscar nominees have said over the years, particularly after a loss. Though that’s true, winning a coveted statuette is the real prize.
The highest-profile overdue veteran actor competing for an Oscar this season is Glenn Close, the wisecracking Mamaw in Ron Howard’s “Hillbilly Elegy.” With seven previous nominations (the most of any living actor without a win), Close, who has delivered win-worthy turns in “Dangerous Liaisons” and “Fatal Attraction” looks to finally have her moment. Her most recent loss, for 2018’s “The Wife” to Olivia Colman in “The Favourite,” was felt in awards enthusiast circles. With what seems a thin roster of supporting actress contenders this year, Close is in the running once again, looking to go against Colman’s work in “The Father.”
Close’s co-star Amy Adams is playing the same card this year in “Hillbilly Elegy.

Do the Oscars hate comedies? If you look over their 92-year history, with so many infectious films and performances ignored in favor of more “serious” pieces of art, the assumption could be made. This year, faced with the Covid-19 pandemic, and with theaters not being the normal avenue to watch films, moviegoers and industry professionals are viewing releases more differently than ever.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. pushed the Golden Globes to Feb. 28, 2021, the last day of the eligibility window for the Oscars. With their best comedy or musical designation, the Globes can highlight the laughs in a year that’s seen so much tragedy. It’s possible that Oscar voters, with fewer films to consider, will think outside the box when making selections for the Academy Awards, which will be held in April 2021.

ABC Signature’s senior vice president Tracy Underwood has been upped to the newly created position of executive vice president of creative affairs of ABC Studios, where she will broaden her purview to oversee all scripted development of comedy and drama at ABC Studios and ABC Signature.

For her directorial debut, Amber Tamblyn chose to adapt a piece of pulp fiction. At least it feels like one: She and co-writer Ed Dougherty adapted a novel by “White Oleander” author Janet Fitch that puts a sensational spin on grief, one so melodramatic that at times it feels like a horror parody. You’re already familiar with Mommie Dearest; get ready to meet Mommie-in-Law Dearest. Josie (Alia Shawkat) is an artist who is apparently able to pay rent on her Echo Park apartment just by being a nude model. First-time feature director Amber Tamblyn sparked to Janet Fitch’s big, bruising novel “Paint It Black” the very first time she read it. “I just had this very instantaneous, cinematic, visceral reaction to the language of the book. I really felt like, ‘Wow. Wouldn’t that make for a great movie, just about the tormented, grief-ridden, inside, interior minds of women?’” Tamblyn told us last year.

Pfeiffer in Beat-Up Little SeagullJust so everyone knows, I am indeed still alive. After briefly passing out. I was on a flight when news broke that Michelle Pfeiffer had signed on to the cast of the new untitled Darren Aronofsky film due in 2017 with filming to start this June.
La Pfeiffer has been Mia from the movies in a significant way since White Oleander (2002) her last Oscar worthy performance (she has famously never won despite multiple breathtaking star turns) and the last onscreen appearance without significant breaks thereafter. She flirted with a comeback in a brief flurry of activity around 2007-2008 (Stardust & Cheri being the highlights) but it's been relatively quiet since then. But no more?...

Watching Cole and Alison interact in this episode brought to mind a passage in Janet Fitch’s wonderfully lush novel, White Oleander: “I thought how tenuous the links were between mother and children, between friends, family, things you think are eternal.” Episode 202 circles around the question, how do we find closure when the bonds we thought were eternal break down? Cole is a character I have never been able to get a handle on. He comes across as unhinged one moment and deeply caring the next so I was very curious to see how he presents himself. Showrunner Sarah Treem places his memories side-by-side against Alison’s, which brings up a lot of interesting questions about what we’ve seen of him thus far.Alison’s chapter opens with her waking up to Noah greeting her before going into the city. There’s a fine, fierce film somewhere in Jenny’s Wedding, trying to claw its way out from under all the clichés, speechifying and sappy pop music. Writer-director Mary Agnes Donoghue (best known for screenplay credits like Beaches and White Oleander) doesn’t make it easy: the movie, about a thirtyish lesbian whose coming-out rattles her traditional Midwestern parents, teases us with pointed moments of humor, truth and emotion only to devolve, again and again, into broad, Hallmark-style dramedy. The result is watchably messy and well-meaning, with a handful of scenes and performances worth savoring and a distinct whiff

Last week, #lovewins was the hashtag heard around the world when the Supreme Court ruled gay marriage was a Constitutional right. And the timing couldn't be better for "Jenny's Wedding," which takes on the topic head on and a new trailer has landed for the film. Written and directed by Mary Agnes Donoghue (who also penned "Beaches," "White Oleander," and "Veronica Guerin"), and starring Katherine Heigl, Alexis Bledel, Tom Wilkinson, Linda Emond, and Grace Gummer, the story follows Jenny, who comes out of the closet to her family and announces that she will be marrying her partner Kitty, and must deal with consequences of disappointment and surprises that follow. The dramedy doesn't feel particularly groundbreaking in a narrative sense, but the emotions ring true, and the cast looks pretty solid all around. A simple story, well told and with a bit of heart looks to be goal and "Jenny's Wedding" aims to hit it.

Today the new season of Tfe begins! We're celebrating with an all top ten list day. Every few hours, a new and highly random top ten list to kick off the Fall Movie Season (our favorite time of year!). Let's start with something that's been haunting me because I forgot to post about the 25th anniversary of The Fabulous Baker Boys yesterday, one of my all time favorite films. A long time ago in a New York City that still felt like a galaxy far far away (I was a recent transplant... 1999/2000?) I attended a Jeff Bridges photography show. He's really a very good photographer and takes photos on the sets of his movies. I stared and stared at this enormous black & white photograph of Michelle Pfeiffer that Bridges had taken.

Always a fan of changing up her style, Vanessa Hudgens showed off her new ombre blue coif via Instagram yesterday (June 2).

Hudgens captioned the photo, “She would be half a planet away, floating in a turquoise sea, dancing by moonlight to flamenco guitar.Janet Fitch, White Oleander.”
And given her perennial appearances at Coachella, Vanessa’s latest look is pretty much what we’d expect heading into summer.

Update: It's been confirmed that former "Homeland" star Damian Lewis will play Henry VIII opposite top-shelf Shakespeare thespian Mark Rylance in the BBC's upcoming Hilary Mantel adaptations "Wolf Hall" and "Bring Up the Bodies." The series is set to air on BBC2 next year -- no word yet on a stateside air date, though it's a co-production with PBS. Earlier: Now that Damian Lewis is Nick Brody no more, the former "Homeland" star is heading to "Wolf Hall." The PBS-bbc drama is a six-part TV adaptation of Hilary Mantel's novels, "Wolf Hall" and "Bring Up the Bodies." Lewis is in talks to star as Henry VIII. Fine Shakespearean actor Mark Rylance is already on board, playing the King's ruthless counselor Thomas Cromwell. Meanwhile, Peter Kominsky ("White Oleander," 1992's "Wuthering Heights") is helming the series, while Peter Straughan (one half of the Oscar-nominated writing duo of "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy") is penning.

Katherine Heigl, formerly of Grey’s Anatomy, formerly of Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen‘s good graces, formerly of a slew of successful romantic comedies and currently of a Nyquil commercial and some truly unfortunate casting choices, has a new film on the way. Called Jenny’s Wedding, Heigl stars as a lesbian who has been hiding her sexuality from her family for years, until she decides to take the next step in her relationship with her longtime girlfriend, Kitty, played by Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls, Mad Men). The news of Jenny’s impending nuptials is enough to tear her family apart, especially since they’re small-town conservatives who have believed up until this point that their daughter’s girlfriend is her roommate. Sounds like a cute little wedding flick that plays right into Heigl’s repertoire. Here’s the kicker. The film is up on Indiegogo to the tune of raising $150,000 to cover post-production costs. Despite...

Nelson Mandela on film and TV: From Sidney Poitier to Terrence Howard (photo: Sidney Poitier as Nelson Mandela in ‘Mandela and de Klerk’) (See previous post: "Nelson Mandela Movies: ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,’ ‘Invictus.’") As found on the IMDb, here are a handful of other narrative big-screen films featuring Nelson Mandela: Darrell Roodt’s Winnie Mandela (2011), with Jennifer Hudson in the title role and Terrence Howard as Nelson Mandela. Pete Travis’ Endgame (2009), with Clarke Peters’ Mandela as less a martyred saint than a skillful realpolitik negotiator. This political drama also features Chiwetel Ejiofor, William Hurt, Jonny Lee Miller, Mark Strong, and Derek Jacobi. Zola Maseko’s 1950s-set Drum (2004), in which Mandela is played — for a change — by a South African actor, Lindani Nkosi. The film is set to start shooting on October 28.
Jenny’S Wedding revolves around Jenny (Heigl) who causes a massive sea-change in the lives of her closely knit, highly conventional family when she finally decides to marry. A pretty and engaging woman, everyone is baffled by Jenny’s lack of a love-life, and her parents (Wilkinson, Emond) particularly have been anxious for her to settle down, but when the announcement comes that she is finally going to wed, her choice of partner tears the family apart. In order to reconnect, everyone including Jenny, must reinvent themselves.

We're getting to know the Film Experience community. Today we're talking to Joey from Pittsburgh. He's currently performing in Godspell on stage. If you're in Pittsburgh there's two more shows this weekend.
When did you start reading The Film Experience?
Around the time that Far From Heaven was released in theaters. I was realizing that Julianne Moore was my favorite actress, so your blog was mecca when I was in college. I love the site because it doesn't just celebrate movies, but it helped me realize that movies can be bad with something great in them (and vice versa).
What's your earliest movie memory?
Joey: The earliest memory I have is when my Dad took me to go see Beauty and the Beast. I remember playing around outside, and he asked if I wanted to go. I didn't actually answer his question, because I got so excited and just got...

For 20 years Michelle Pfeiffer was a constant presence on the big screen. She was nominated for three Oscars (for "Dangerous Liaisons," "The Fabulous Baker Boys" and "Love Field") and starred in big hits including "Batman Returns," "What Lies Beneath" and "Dangerous Minds." And then, after 2002's "White Oleander," Pfeiffer stepped back from stardom to focus on her family. She lent her voice to an animated "Sinbad" movie, starred in a romantic comedy with Paul Rudd that went direct-to-video ("I Could Never Be Your Woman") and didn't return to theaters until 2007's "Hairspray" and "Stardust." She hasn't dramatically ramped up her...

Gratuitous Anecdote! I've always loved to draw and in my high school years it's what people knew me for. I won the High School's Departmental Award in Art (Do they still have departmental awards? Hell, do they still have art classes?) in that heady stretch of graduation celebrations where they keep honoring star pupils. One day early in my senior year or maybe it was at the end of my junior year, the art teacher asked one of the students to pose for the class. A guy I didn't know volunteered and I felt totally inspired. Instant crushing helps. He loved my drawing and we became fast friends after the class. The first day I went to his house after school I was stunned to see a whole house full of doppelgangers. He had one of those families...

The death of actor Jonathan Frid, the original Barnabas Collins, makes this a sad week in the "Dark Shadows"-verse. The 87-year-old, classically trained actor passed away at a hospital in Hamilton, Ontario, on April 13 after a fall at his home. Frid cameos in Tim Burton's big-screen adaptation of the '60s soap opera, which hits theaters on May 11. It will be his final screen appearance.

We started this blogging experiment by asking readers to rank all the Streep Oscar Nominated performances they'd seen. Then we shared reader stories of how you first discovered Streep. I tabulated all the results, weighting the ballots so the readers who had seen the most films counted for more. Now we've reached the tippity top of Streep performances! For what it's worth, the top six (including Kramer Vs. Kramer) were the clear winners of your collective hierarchy and numbers two through four were closely bunched together in your estimation, each threatening to take spot #2 with each new ballot that arrived, though eventually they settled into their current positions.
