Chicago – Actor/filmmaker Clare Cooney began her career in Chicago, and is returning to represent her debut as feature film director for “Departing Seniors,” a North American Premiere on Opening Night at the 59th Chicago International Film Festival (Ciff). For tickets and info, click Seniors.
Mexican-American and queer, high school student Javier (Ignacio Diaz-Silverio) doesn’t exactly fit in with the popular kids, preferring the company of sardonic friend Bianca (Ireon Roach), but he might be the only one who can save them all. After an act of bullying sends Javier to the hospital, he begins experiencing visions that foresee glimpses of shocking murders at his school right before they happen. Now, in between navigating the social hierarchies and prejudices of clique culture, he has to unmask a serial killer before they strike again.

John Frankenheimer’s 52 Pick-Up is one of the better of the willfully decadent American thrillers from the 1980s that are preoccupied with drugs, guns, strippers, prostitutes, money, and the men who kill each other attempting to obtain them. Though this film isn’t generally mentioned in discussions of the adaptations of Elmore Leonard’s work, the crime master’s imprint is felt on the scenes that routinely threaten to elevate 52 Pick-Up from a sleazy, well-paced time-killer to an authentically good movie. Leonard’s sense of humor is under-emphasized, but his satirical notion of crime as a business beholden to the same petty political trivialities as more “legitimate” enterprises is explicitly accounted for.
When self-made industrialist Harry Mitchell (Roy Scheider) is blackmailed by a couple of vicious hoods, he remains unflappable while amusingly entering into negotiations with them over the terms of his exploitation. Though this is never fully acknowledged in Frankenheimer’s film,...

Sam Fuller turns from combat in Korea to cat ‘n mouse games in New York City, with America’s stand-up defenders being exactly one low-life pickpocket and one saucy woman of the sidewalks. Richard Widmark is a charming chiseler with a wicked grin, Jean Peters is the hot number who takes a knockdown as a love pat, and Thelma Ritter steals the show as a wholly endearing snitch trying to earn money for a nice burial plot. But Fuller’s directorial powers are going full tilt, with scenes of cinematic power to match any ‘auteur’ — you’ll be mesmerized by a sordid subway encounter that could be rated X for basic erotic chemistry.

“Pickpockets And Stool Pigeons”
By Raymond Benson
Samuel Fuller’s 1953 film noir, Pickup on South Street, was shocking in its day and still manages to deliver a punch to the gut.
In the conservative early 50s, who would have thought that Hollywood would green light a picture in which a pickpocket, a “loose” woman, and a stool pigeon are the protagonists? Film noir titles often told stories from the point of view of the criminals when they didn’t focus on cynical and hard-boiled private investigators, but Pickup attempts to make these lowlifes sympathetic. Surprisingly, the movie succeeds. While the film was not well-received upon release, the years have been kind to it. Today, Fuller’s hard-edge crime story-cum-Cold War spy thriller is considered a masterpiece of its ilk.
Sleazy Skip McCoy (Richard Widmark) is a professional pickpocket, often preying on unsuspecting women on New York subway trains.

Since CD Project Red’s much anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 open-world RPG released last week, it’s fair to say that the game’s shambolic launch has devolved into an utter PR disaster for the otherwise well-respected Polish studio.
From the developer actively hiding the title’s shoddy performance and messy bugs on last-gen consoles, to the company’s dramatically falling internal stock prices, to an unprecedented decision from Sony to pull the title from its digital storefronts and offer full refunds to disgruntled customers, it’s been a total trainwreck witnessing one of the worst video game launches in recent memory lurch from one pitfall to another.
Thankfully, all is not lost, as a brand new update has just been deployed to help iron out a ton of Cyberpunk 2077‘s aformentioned performance issues and bugs. Yes, Version 1.05 is now live for PS4 and Xbox One, with PC players scheduled to receive...

Exclusive: Anna Chazelle is set to direct the latest film adaptation in the Elmore Leonard literary canon. The French-American actress, writer, and producer will helm The Trespassers, the crime novel which was not published until after Leonard’s death in 2013.
Written in 1958, the story is told from the Pov of a young wife who becomes increasingly frustrated with her mild-mannered husband. When the husband refuses to confront some men who are illegally hunting on the couple’s remote homestead, his wife takes matters into her own hands.
Troy Blake adapted the screenplay which is being produced by Megan Freels Johnston, the granddaughter of the late crime novelist, via her Look At Me Films, along with Nick Terry at Zero Gravity Management. Exec producers are Stephen Gary and Peter Leonard.
Said Johnston, “The Trespassers is such a relevant story because whether it’s 1958 or today, many women can relate to the...

As we get deeper into the summer, entertainment offerings are bound to start slimming – particularly in this pandemic era. Perhaps there’s no greater example of the oncoming drought than Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for July 2020.
Though the new options may be few and far between on Amazon this month, at least they pack a bit of a punch. In the case of Hanna season 2, that punch is quite literal. Esme Creed-Miles returns as the titular precocious super soldier. You can check out our review here. Beyond that, there are two intriguing Amazon original movies. The first is the Rosamund Pike-starring Radioactive and that arrives on July 24. Then there is the Dave Bautista film My Spy on July 26.
With HBO Max now on the scene, Amazon Prime is sure to lose some of its library titles. That can already be seen in the relatively sparse offerings for July.

With so many streaming services to choose from, it can often be difficult to find the right one to spend your hard-earned dough on. That being said, Hulu has remained among the most exciting and content-heavy platforms alongside Netflix, really cementing itself as one of the most appealing options out there in recent years thanks to its collection of original content and very, very deep library of licensed films.
Like every other streaming service, they bring us new titles every month and July is looking to be quite a good one. Especially if you’re a horror fan. Admittedly, Hulu has always been pretty reliable when it comes to this particular genre, and that’s a reputation they seem intent to keep, as next month will bring us the likes of The Devil’s Rejects, Freddy vs. Jason, Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, House of 1000 Corpses, The Ninth Gate, The House That Jack Built...
