Darren Criss has played queer roles over the years and is now explaining why he says he’s “culturally gay.”
One of the actor’s most remembered roles is Blaine Anderson from Glee, and during an appearance at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo, he was asked about the impact of his character and the on-screen relationship with Chris Colfer’s Kurt.
“F***ing awesome,” Criss said about portraying the gay character. “It was a narrative that I cared deeply about.”
Criss identifies as a straight, cisgender male and attributes his understanding of the LGBTQ+ community to his upbringing in San Francisco, California.
“I have been so culturally queer my whole life,” he said. “Not because I’m trying, you know, actually, I was gonna say, not because I’m trying to be cool, but I’m gonna erase that, because I am trying to be cool. The things in my...

When the 77th Tony Awards nominations are announced this morning, those honored with recognition will have been selected by a small group of theatre professionals who commit to seeing each and every eligible production that opened during the 2023-2024 season. They are thus able to make informed decisions on what shows, performers and creatives should earn the spotlight of New York theatre’s top honor.
This past season, 60 theatre professionals saw all 36 eligible musicals, play, and revivals and will select the nominees in 26 competitive categories.
Below, see a complete list of the 2023-2024 Tony Awards nominating committee members, including their professions plus past Tony nominations and wins. Some of these nominators may have to recuse themselves prior to voting if they have a conflict, such as if a production that they worked is eligible for a nomination this year.

If Criterion24/7 hasn’t completely colonized your attention every time you open the Channel––this is to say: if you’re stronger than me––their May lineup may be of interest. First and foremost I’m happy to see a Michael Roemer triple-feature: his superlative Nothing But a Man, arriving in a Criterion Edition, and the recently rediscovered The Plot Against Harry and Vengeance is Mine, three distinct features that suggest a long-lost voice of American movies. Meanwhile, Nobuhiko Obayashi’s Antiwar Trilogy four by Sara Driver, and a wide collection from Ayoka Chenzira fill out the auteurist sets.
Series-wise, a highlight of 1999 goes beyond the well-established canon with films like Trick and Bye Bye Africa, while of course including Sofia Coppola, Michael Mann, Scorsese, and Claire Denis. Films starring Shirley Maclaine, a study of 1960s paranoia, and Columbia’s “golden era” (read: 1950-1961) are curated; meanwhile, The Breaking Ice,...

The People's Joker. In The People’s Joker (2022), Vera Drew makes her feverish entrance into the cluttered morass of the DC Comics cinematic multiverse by bursting through a trapdoor. Having garnered recognition as an Emmy-nominated television editor for outré comedians such as Tim Heidecker, Eric André, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Tim Robinson, Drew serves as director, co-writer, editor, lead actress, and cosmic prankster for her cinematic debut. The anarchic DIY spectacle, recently released theatrically after two years in intellectual-property limbo, mines the contradictory supervillain mythologies of the Joker to narrate Drew’s journey of self-discovery as a trans woman in the fractious world of alternative comedy. After Warner Bros. sent a cryptic letter of disapproval regarding the film’s flagrant recontextualization of the Batman franchise a day before its debut at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, it was pulled from the program. Drew and her battalion of masked vigilantes have commandeered...

It isn’t every day you encounter a pop-disco musical about a buoyant aspiring circus performer and a brooding aspiring rock singer with competing Mommy issues falling in love in Mexico City against the electricized rearrangements of the Indigo Girls. And that’s not exactly lamentable, because I wouldn’t categorize English-language Glitter & Doom as necessarily essential cinema … though I also couldn’t accuse it of being anything other than original either. (Well, except for the foundational premise of opposites attracting and then ultimately clashing over dueling artistic ambitions.) Director Tom Gustafson (Were the World Mine) has crafted a sweet if plodding love story but it’s hard to truly hate on this whirling candy-colored poetic fairytale — it’s just too sincere, much like the musical source material.

It’s early afternoon on a Friday when Darren Criss and Evan Rachel Wood pick up the phone, just five days before they are set to debut as the new Seymour and Audrey in off-Broadway’s Little Shop of Horrors.
Both are on their way to the Westside Theatre stage for their first top-to-bottom run-through, taking over the complicated but beloved characters based on Roger Corman’s 1960 horror comedy and deftly adapted for the stage by theater legends Howard Ashman (book and lyrics) and Alan Menken (music).
Now in the fifth year of the U.S. revival of the dark goings-on of a Skid Row flower shop, several notable names have left their mark on the show: Jonathan Groff, Jeremy Jordan, Conrad Ricamora, Corbin Bleu, Constance Wu, Maude Apatow, Tammy Blanchard and Lena Hall. But none quite like this, as an intentional leap together among friends.

The only daughter in the family, with eight brothers, Leila (Layla Mohammadi) is used to being spoiled. She’s also used to her mother Shireen (Niousha Noor) being overprotective and trying to change the way she lives, but much as she likes to complain about this, she’s never really asked itself why it’s the case. Growing up as part of an immigrant Persian community in Brooklyn, she’s taken a lot of things for granted. It takes a pair of unexpected events to prompt her to examine their relationship more deeply, and to become curious about the life her parents left behind.
The first of these is a crisis of her own making. Attending a fancy dress party as ‘Miss Burkatini’, in a swimsuit and hijab with a surfboard under her arm, she meets Max (Tom Byrne), whom she takes for a drag queen. He tries to explain...

This story about Christine Vachon first appeared in the College Issue of TheWrap’s magazine.
Over the course of more than 30 years and 100 films, Christine Vachon has become one of the most impactful producers of independent film — and as the artistic director of the Mfa program at Stony Brook Manhattan, one of the most intriguing film educators as well. She founded her company, Killer Films, with fellow New York-based producer Pamela Koffler in 1996, five years into a career that had begun with Todd Haynes’ feature debut, “Poison,” and would go on to include every one of Haynes’ movies, among them “Velvet Goldmine,” “Far From Heaven,” “Carol” and the upcoming “May December.”
Vachon’s other films include Larry Clark’s “Kids,” Todd Solondz’s “Happiness,” John Cameron Mitchell’s “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” Kimberly Peirce’s “Boys Don’t Cry” and Paul Schrader’s “First Reformed.” She’s known for working with young and first-time directors,...

“The Persian Version,” in line with “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” and “Moonstruck,” sets out to capture the conflicting cultures of being a first-generation American, especially through the perspective of a coming-of-age story. And while the Sundance Award-winning film has a certain early 2000s charm to it, it tries to do too much too fast in terms of educating audiences about Iranian politics through the personal history of rising matriarch (yet current angsty outsider) Leila (Layla Mohammadi).
The “sort of” true story opens with Leila donning a burqa over a bikini (a “burq-ini”), hooking up with a “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” Broadway performer (Tom Byrne), and breaking the fourth wall to explain just how complicated her life as a queer Iranian-American woman is. It’s the kind of “Fleabag” commentary that feels too trendy and too convenient for a film with this amount of tonal shifts, zinging between Leila...

From ‘Les Misérables’ to ‘West Side Story,’ here are IMDb viewers’ top picks for the best musicals ever brought to the big screen. Which is your favorite?
Musicals: They’re a realm where reality gracefully gives way to rapture, where spoken words don’t just bind characters but also the eloquent language of song and dance.

If you don't know the name Grant Singer, chances are you're familiar with his work as a music video and commercial director. Singer has been behind some of the most visually striking videos of the past few years and has worked with artists such as The Weeknd, Sky Ferreira, Lorde, Taylor Swift, Sam Smith, Ariana Grande, Ariel Pink, and Skrillex. Now, Singer is following in the footsteps of filmmakers like Michael Bay, David Fincher, Gus Van Sant, McG, Joseph Kahn, Daniels, and Spike Jonze by delivering his first narrative feature. With a star-studded cast and a compelling story, Singer's new Netflix thriller looks and sounds like a refreshing addition to the streaming juggernaut's library of original projects. Check out the film's official synopsis below:
Following the brutal murder of a young real estate agent, a hardened detective (Benicio Del Toro) attempts to uncover the truth in a case where nothing is as it seems,...

Sex on film is nothing new, and yet unsimulated intercourse in non-pornographic movies continues to raise eyebrows and draw eyeballs. From Vincent Gallo’s controversial directing for “Brown Bunny” to Robert Pattinson’s masturbatory method acting in”Little Ashes,” genuine intimate encounters captured on film — however staged they may be — can pull audiences into the bigger stories their writers and directors are trying to tell.
Catherine Breillat’s first film in 1976, “A Real Young Girl,” adapts her own controversial novel about a 14-year-old exploring her newfound sexuality. Breillat’s later work, 1999’s “Romance,” tells the story of a woman desperately seeking human connection and featured similar scenes, including sadomasochistic sex play.
“Actors are prostitutes because they’re asked to play other feelings,” Breillat told IndieWire. “This prostitution is not profane; it’s a sacred act that we give them.”

In “Subspace Rhapsody,” the penultimate episode of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” second season, a mishap involving a recording of Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes” and a “subspace fold” causes what the franchise’s technobabble labels an “improbability field:” a glitch in reality that forces the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise to behave like they’re in a musical, bursting into song at inopportune times. Immediately after the big stage-setting ensemble number, Captain Pike (Anson Mount) holds a meeting to figure out what happened, and security officer La’an (Christina Chong) rolls her eyes and asks “What’s next? More improbability, or will we suddenly just poof into bunnies?”
The joke, in the context of the episode, feels slightly random and out of step with the show’s typical sense of humor. But for anyone who has ever watched “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” the reference to bunnies instantly...

John Cameron Mitchell, who blazed onto the indie scene with the 2001 queer musical “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” hopes that the recent state legislation outlawing drag shows will soon be a thing of the past.
“I think it’s temporary because most young people realize it is absurd and eventually, the bigots die off,” Mitchell told TheWrap in a recent interview.
The Tony-winning actor, who costars in Apple TV+’s “City on Fire” and did musical turns on Netflix’s “Sandman” and a Season 2 episode of “Yellowjackets,” recently moved to New Orleans and spoke about a pending drag ban in Louisiana.

Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells, the original stars of The Book of Mormon, will return to Broadway in a comedic two-hander, Gutenberg! The Musical!
Gutenberg! The Musical! will play the James Earl Jones Theatre starting Sept. 15, ahead of an opening night on Oct. 12. The limited engagement is scheduled to run through Jan. 28, 2024.
Directed by Alex Timbers, and written by Scott Brown and Anthony King (all of whom worked on the musical Beetlejuice), the show is about two friends who create a musical about Johannes Gutenberg, the creator of the printing press, in what Rannells says is a “demented love letter to Broadway,” per a promotional video for the show.
The production was originally developed at New York’s Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theatre and was also a part of the New York Musical Theatre Festival. The show had an off-Broadway run in 2006 and productions have played across North America, as well as the U.

“Yellowjackets” composers and songwriters Craig Wedren and Anna Waronker jumped at the chance to write the original music and lyrics contender “Sit Right Down” for Episode 7 of the Showtime series.
“We were deep into the blood, fragmentation, descent and sanity-shattering music,” Wedren says, referring to the events that the survivors have to endure this season. The producers asked them to write an “MGM, old school standard number meets Bob Fosse.”
The dream sequence happens as Simone Kessell’s Lottie asks the adult Yellowjackets to choose a therapy option treatment at her “wellness retreat.” Misty, played by Christina Ricci, finds herself in a sensory tank after picking “Guidance.” She needs it. In the teen timeline, Misty (played by Samantha Hanratty) makes a new bestie in Crystal, a fellow theater lover. In Dreams, written by David West Read and directed by Luke Sheppard will have out-of-town tryouts at Leeds Playhouse in the UK and the CAA Ed Mirvish Theatre in Toronto before an expected transfer to Broadway.
The story revolves around the former lead singer (Hall) of a country rock band who, at a critical moment in her life, throws a party in a family-run Mexican restaurant to reconnect with old friends, while keeping her deeper motivations a secret.
Casting for the Leeds production (July 3-August 5) will include Oliver Tompsett, who appeared in the West End production of & Juliet. He’ll play a drummer from the Hall character’s past.

How did John Cameron Mitchell become the head of this year’s Queer Palm award jury in Cannes? “Sexual favors,” he quips.
While the director of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” and “How to Talk to Girls at Parties” (which played out of competition at Cannes) is joking, sexuality is at the heart of one of the world’s most prestigious LGBTQ+ film awards. And with more anti-queer legislation being enacted around the world than at any time in recent memory, the attention it brings to films that humanize this scapegoated population is arguably more important than ever.
“The Queer Palm, the festival and any awards help to dignify work, so that it often can be distributed and sometimes celebrated in its own queer-phobic country,” says Mitchell, who helped start a queer dance night at the American Pavilion in 2004 and DJs when he’s in town. “[The trans-themed] ‘Joyland’ was banned in...

The winter storm has somewhat abated on “Yellowjackets” and opened up many things in Episode 7, “Burial,” but nothing compares to what Misty discovers within the depths of an immersion tank: John Cameron Mitchell.
Mitchell graces the Showtime series for a brief musical interlude based, according to director Anya Adams, on the wildest, Fosse-est swings in “Cabaret” and “Chicago.” Even though the sequence lasts just three-and-a-half minutes, it was extensively prepped, rehearsed, and shot so that the “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” star would be just as magnetic as Joel Grey’s Mc — even dressed as a parrot.
Because, of course, Mitchell appears in this mental musical interlude embodying Caligula, Misty’s bird friend named for one of the more maligned Roman Emperors (an impressive feat given the murder baseline for Roman Emperors). How does one prepare to play a parrot figment of one of the more unhinged “Yellowjackets” characters? By...

Mitchell, who rose to fame for writing and starring in the stage musical and subsequent film “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” has appeared recently in “The Sandman” and costars in Apple TV+’s “City on Fire,” which premieres Sunday.

Episode seven of “Yellowjackets” Season 2, “Burial,” offers a temporary calm after episode six’s tempestuous storm. As the season faces its final few episodes, “Burial” dials back the turbulent intensity just enough to develop individual character arcs further as the Yellowjackets finally reunite. Episode seven explores the fallout of “Qui,” forcing its characters to confront truths, grapple with their inner turmoil and traumas, and steel themselves for another raging storm.

John Cameron Mitchell was originally cast in John Hughes’ “The Breakfast Club,” but that incarnation of the movie never happened due to lack of funding, the actor told TheWrap.
The actor, best known for his role in the 2001 cult classic “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” plays a sinister step-uncle to Jemima Kirke and Nico Tortorella’s characters in the new Apple TV+ series “City on Fire.” He had the occasion to revisit his brush with the Brat Pack when he and Molly Ringwald, who played rich girl Claire Standish in the ’80s high school classic, were both on the same flight.

Neil Patrick Harris brought the family to Broadway. The actor was accompanied by his husband, David Burtka, and their 12-year-old twins, Harper and Gideon, to the opening night of his new show "Peter Pan Goes Wrong" on April 19. Harris flexes his comedy chops as a narrator and pirate in the show at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in New York City. Before seeing Harris perform, the family made a rare appearance on the red carpet, with the twins looking all grown up.
The new show turns J. M. Barrie's iconic "Peter Pan" on its head with drama, mischief, and accidents galore. "Peter Pan Goes Wrong" has already garnered critical acclaim following its debut, with viewers praising Harris for his "ditzy, unbuttoned comic relish," per Variety. "First show tonight!" Harris wrote on Instagram. "Hope you get a chance to come and see us all - the world needs a proper, well-crafted laugh right now.

“It’s hilarious, sweet, universal,” declares Kevin Cahoon of the new Broadway musical “Schucked.” Original works spend years in development before they make it to the rialto, and the actor has been working on this musical comedy for the past eight years. In fact, he’s the only member of the Broadway company who has been with the production since day one. As he thinks back on the many readings, out-of-town tryouts, and script overhauls which have shaped this “corny” tuner, Cahoon believes that “It has finally found its right moment” to make its hysterical and heartwarming entrance in New York. Watch the exclusive video interview above.

Exclusive: Michael C. Hall has signed with CAA for representation.
Hall is best known for starring in Showtime’s award-winning series Dexter, and in HBO’s Six Feet Under. The two roles earned him a Golden Globe, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, and several Emmy Award nominations.
He recently reprised the role of Dexter Morgan in Dexter: New Blood, the limited series in which he starred and executive produced. Showtime is definitely interested in more Dexter series; it already said it is considering a Dexter prequel series about the Trinity Killer while also developing Dexter: Origins and the next chapter of Dexter: New Blood.
Hall’s stage career includes such Broadway performances as the emcee in the 1999 revival of Cabaret, directed by Sam Mendes; Hedwig in John Cameron Mitchell’s Hedwig and the Angry Inch; and John Jones in The Realistic Joneses opposite Toni Collette, Marisa Tomei, and Tracy Letts.

"Hedwig and the Angry Inch" is a movie that really helped me come to terms with myself when I first saw it over 20 years ago. Back then, I wasn't very comfortable with my looks and I often felt self-conscious about my personality when talking to people I didn't know very well. The film's message of self-acceptance really struck a chord, enabling me to take a more positive view of who I was.
Created by its star John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask, "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" began life onstage as a hit off-Broadway production in 1998 before taking the leap to the big screen in 2001. The movie adaptation failed to replicate the success of the stage show, only making $3.6 million at the box office against a slim budget of $6 million. Since then, the film has become a modern cult classic, and several actors have portrayed the eponymous rocker on stage over the past two decades,...

John Cameron Mitchell is in the game of redefining grand themes. He often takes topics that have been well explored: gender, sex, grief, what it means to be human, and finds new angles to explore those with. Often the characters in his films struggle with these questions, and might be hardened or lost, but the films themselves are vulnerable and wear their hearts on their sleeves. His feature debut, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, for instance, shows the titular character struggle with a botched gender transitioning operation, leaving her frustrated about...
