Finally out on DVD ... Darren Star's most underrated series.
alsation7222 April 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This show was set around a fictional teen drama series, 'Grosse Pointe' - think 'Dawson's Creek' or '90210'.

The writers struggle to come up with decent story-lines, the actors obsess over their images and the crew tries to roll with the punches. There is thus a clever dimensionality to it all: it is very busy but in a wonderful way.

One gets the feeling that this show stepped on too many toes ... obviously Hollywood has no sense of humour about itself (ask Kathy Griffin). The Marcy Sternfeld character for example has some lines overdubbed because the resemblance to Tori Spelling allegedly annoyed her father Aaron Spelling.

After 11 years it is still very fresh and watch-able. Finally it has been released on DVD and I just keep buying it as a gift for the uninitiated; thank-you ebay!

Irene Molloy easily steals most of the scenes she appears in, Lindsay Sloane is good too. The cast is hard to fault. It is a great shame the network didn't stick with the show for a few seasons.

Highly recommended.

I remember enjoying it a lot
smooth_op_8516 May 2018
I don't remember a lot about it except for a pinball game where one of the characters was supposed to be pregnant and when the pinball went through "Stone I'm having your baby" and how cute Dave the stand in was

I remember watching it and enjoying the theme song a lot and how it ended so soon. If there is anything ready for a reboot I think it would be this series. It truly had a lot of early 90s soap opera esque references to Beverly Hills 90210 and I believe the creator actually worked on that show so it doesn't seem too far off

I'm looking forward to watching this with new eyes (I was a teenager when this show came out)

Great show, shame it didn't last longer
icehole419 March 2003
Pretentiously angst-ridden teenager shows have always taken themselves way too seriously - and that leaves them open to a parody. Grosse Point delivered such a masterful send-up of life on and off one of these TV shows. The characters were well-crafted, and played by people who were very talented. They were based on real people in teen angst shows. Hunter Fallow, the kleptomaniac prima donna was loosely based on Shannon Daughtery; Quinton King, the sex addict was loosely based on Jason Priestly; Courtney Scott, the clueless ditzy blonde was loosely based on Courtney Thorne-Smith. Funniest of them all was Dave the stand-in, who had to take on the most stupidest of jobs for pay (such as being in the Michigan J. Frog costume for a party in one episode.)

It lasted too short a time to really get a good following. I'm sure that if WB had treated it like NBC treated Cheers (in Cheers' first season, it was the lowest rated show in its time slot) Grosse Pointe would still be around today.

Warning: Spoilers
I wasn't to sure about the show at first kinda cheesy in a way made me think of Popular and then once I started watching episode after episode you get so hooked on everyone and I absolutely loved the show so much...It was kinda funny because mentioning that it sorta reminded me of Popular that the end of the 2nd season the final season ended so retarded not knowing what happened where...and that is exactly what I thought of Grosse Pointe I mean come on Dave and Marcy NEEDed to end up together and they left it as such a ? It just should have had it least one more episode to tie up loose ends...I would have LOVED to see another season of this show...If you get the full series on DVD so you can watch it all at once then you get so hooked I just started watching it today and Im already done lol I couldn't stop watching once you start...Well good job to all but really wish there would have been more :) :) :)

Brilliant behind the scene TV series.

This show is absolutely brilliant. If you like show business industry behind the scene tales, it doesn't get any better than this. Fantastic cast and so funny.

Excellent TV Show!!! (A Must See)
jimmyplm19 February 2001
So far "Grosse Pointe" seems to be one of those yet undiscovered treasures on television today. This sitcom has it all--a beautiful and funny cast, clever writing, romance, and hilarious comedy. How could you go wrong by watching it?

I personally love the character named Hunter (the one you love to hate). She gives Karen on "Will & Grace" a run for her money as the biggest sitcom diva out there right now.

Dave and Marcy also make the show a lot of fun with their sweet-natured characters. I really enjoy the episodes that center around these two's star-crossed situation.

Do yourself a favor and check out the best kept secret on primetime television. This show often seems even better than the shows that it parodies. If you like "Dawson's Creek," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Melrose Place," "90210," or "Felicity," then you will LOVE "Grosse Pointe."

"Grosse Pointe" rox my sox!
applehuntr16 February 2001
I wrote a review of this show after the series premiere saying it was pretty funny. "Grosse Pointe" has made it's place on my weekly watchin' list. It is absolutely friggin' hilarious. Most of the actors on the show do not have much of a resume, but they are all extremely talented and this show should make their careers take off. The show can successfully mix in drama, something I was hesitant to see, but was surprised. Lindsay Sloane is an excellent actress, and is the stand out. Irene Malloy is also very funny. This show has great dialogue, and is very witty, something I can't get enough of (That's one of the main reasons I watch 'Popular'). It has managed to stay on the air so far, but with a sucky time slot that I can't seem to remember. The WB doesn't seem to realize what a gem it has on its hands, it'll give 'Jack and Jill' a good time slot AND a second chance, even though it does not deserve it in the least. "Grosse Pointe' is up there with "Buffy" and "Popular". Watch now before they cancel this show.

Grosse Pointe Rules!
JThomas-25 January 2001
I am 38 years old who truly has hated all the old teeny bopper soap operas that have been on TV for too long - so a show that pokes fun at them is right up my alley! Grosse Pointe really knows how to stick it to the powers that be with this show. The show within a show idea and having older actors playing teenagers is really hilarious - plus - talk about eye candy! That these people can walk and talk at the same time is a miracle! The women are just too pretty and the men are just too buff. The dialogue is great and the delivery is appropriately wacky and often deadpan. You've just got to see this show to appreciate it!

Please do not cancel this show!!!!! This is one of the brightest spots in an otherwise doldrum wasteland.

How, how could they cancel it???
ArtistGrl29 May 2003
This is only the funniest TV show I've seen since 'Married With Children' ended!! I admit I didn't watch it when it was first aired, but a couple of weeks ago I caught it on late-night reruns and was hooked straight away... little did I know that there were only a few episodes left to air! so after some checking up, I found out that it was that 'failed' TV show our local comedy channel bought after it had already been killed in the US, probably the reason it didn't get much advertising or attention here either.

Well, dear american broadcasting networks, who hold the future of the world's greatest series on your hands, I must ask you... why, oh why do you let such a great shows like Grosse Pointe end so quickly and on the other hand kept stuff like "Suddenly Susan" airing for so long? that is just beyond my comprehension...

Grosse Pointe had it all, comedy, parody, irony, a kind of a 'behind the scenes' look on Hollywood, great guest-stars, nice punches at the shows it made fun of (I loved the episode where Marcy "died")... everything... I wish there were some more seasons :(

This has to be one of the most outrages funny show on TV ever. I mean it couldn't be funnier. The story line about Marcy never having an orgasm was so funny and Quentin's herpes. It's such a shame that they cancelled it. I think the Spellings were offended. They had the best guest stars, Kristen Davis, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Elizabeth Berkeley, Jason Priestly as the guy sex addicted anonymous. I loved Hunter, she was just a brilliant actress, and she used it. Great show, if you ever get the chance check it out.

Australia Loves Grosse Pointe.
myers_freak22 August 2004
Grosse Pointe is (was) one of the funniest shows ever.

It was first screened in Australia 3 years ago and was recently screened on Cable so I caught up on all the episodes I missed. The Characters were all very lovable especially the unlikeable ones such as Johnny (Al Santos) and Hunter (Irene Molloy). The show should have been given at least another season because even The O.C. was originally a flop on Australian television but a network saw the potential the show had and gave it a chance, now it's a ratings bonanza. I know it's too late to save this show but I hope the WB realises what a mistake they made by canceling it. I Just SO hope they release it on DVD.

I am devastated the WB cancelled Grosse Pointe
peter-moore9 December 2002
Grosse Pointe screened in Australia on the 10 Network on a Sunday evening. The show is now screening on the Fox8 channel on Foxtel(cable television).

I am really enjoying watching the show again. I was so annoyed that the WB cancelled Grosse Pointe as I thought it was one of the best sitcoms around. It was funny, well written and convincingly acted.

I also really enjoyed trying to work out which Grosse Point cast member(as in Hunter etc..)was based on which Hollywood actor or actress. I am sure that I have a few correct.

I had Hunter Fallow as Shannon Doherty. With Marcy Sternfield I thought she might be based on Tori Spelling. Quentin King has to be Luke Perry but I am not really sure about the rest.

Anyway, I know its too late for the show to saved but I am hoping that Warner Bros will release a DVD of Grosse Pointe, maybe with heaps of extras.

Living in hope...

Smart sharp satire
Maze8 September 2003
This is a brilliant send-up of Beverly Hills 90210 and clearly a case of Darren Star getting the nauseating 90210 out of his system. Each episode is perfection and stands up to repeat viewing. If you like clever cutting satire like the Simpsons you'll like this.

Too bad it got canceled
linanutshell10 June 2002
I watched this show all of my 6th grade year, when it was on, even though I had to stay up until 10PM (which doesn't seem late now, but it was when I had a lot of homework and did it in the morning). I always loved it, despite its faults. Granted, it's no West Wing, but it never claimed to be anything it's not. Even if the WB won't bring the show back, I wish it would play some reruns, for old times' sake.

A Show That Will Go Far.
famousgir18 September 2001
Grosse Point is a good teen show about the lives of the five actors who star in a fictional tv show called, Grosse Pointe. I don't really know too much about the cast here, except, Lindsay Sloane who plays Marry Sternfeld/Kim Peterson. She basically portrays the same character, she played in the teen show, 'Sabrina, The Teenage Witch', but she still does a good job here, as do the rest of the cast. Grosse Point is a show that definitely could go far.

Pretty funny new show
applehuntr23 September 2000
The Season Premiere for Grosse Pointe was last night, and it is actually a funny show. It resembles the extremely funny "Popular", both shows are witty and mean-spirited, but GP doesn't try to mix a little bit of drama in there, but most likely that's a good thing since "Popular" is one of the only shows (on the WB) that can do that successfully. May be come one of the weekly shows I tune in to, if it can hopefully stay on the air.

innovative, intelligent comedy series...
gparlett9 March 2003
A great series killed by a bad time slot, Grosse Pointe skewered the WB's teeny bopper comedies(Dawson's Creek, et al) and yet was still a great teeny bopper comedy itself. Featured a great cast who has generally gone on to do other offbeat and brilliant projects (perhaps most notably Irene Malloy's starring role in Andy Richter Controls the Universe and Lindsay Sloane's brilliant one off on Greg the Bunny). Hopefully both seasons will be released on DVD someday.

Biting satire, no-holds-barred hilarity...long overdue
Comrade Genghis30 September 2000
Often, a new show either has a lackluster pilot followed by an absolutely brilliant series, or else they have a promising pilot followed by a disappointing series. It's often difficult to tell the future of a brand-new series. As for GROSSE POINTE, however, the second episode was every bit as smart as the first.

So the WB network brings us a show that pokes fun at teen primetime soap melodramas...the very shows for which WB is known. It's about time that this genre was spoofed. But this show goes beyond satire: the behind-the-scenes situations are just as wickedly funny as are the fictional "Grosse Pointe" scenes. There is already a behind-the-scenes love triangle, but thankfully there is absolutely no mush. I have the feeling that I'll be watching this show for a long time.

The best sitcom on TV!!!
TinTin-612 February 2001
I've always been a huge Darren Star fan. Everything this man touches turns into gold...or at least silver. I loved 90210 (up until they all went to college, then it become a bore, but hey, that's when Star left) and had a passion for Melrose Place. Everything, characters and story lines, were so exaggerated that it made it so much fun. And now Grosse Pointe. This series is so smart, funny, clever, hilarious... The characters are extremely interesting and so are their characters in the Grosse Pointe within Grosse Pointe. The first episode did it for me already when 'Becky' (Irene Molloy) gets into a car accident. On her hospital bed she's being told by the doctors that she lost the baby. Her response: "I always lose everything!". It became better and better and every episode surpasses the other one. But now there's rumours that the show will be taken off the air? Please, are they nuts?!?!?!? Get Survivor or Temptation Island off the little screen but keep your hands off GROSSE POINTE!

I think it's nothing but funny!

I live in London, England and they have recently started televising Grosse Pointe. I think it's funny. Unfortunately, today (14-Nov-01) I found out the show has been canceled. That's too bad, I think it's a scream. On the show within the show Grosse Pointe is supposed to be funny and the actors bad, unlike 90210 where the show was funny and the actors were bad and we weren't supposed to notice, I guess. I love the character Marcy, she is such a Tori. The whole thing is a hoot!

very original
LisA_siMp10 January 2001
i thinks this new show is very good, i like it when a first saw it, it´s very entertaining and has a great potential. it´s very original because it is a tv-serie about a tv-serie, and how do they make it, and the lives and problems of the show´s actors who are very different in the reality... i don´t know if "groose pointe" shows really how is the life of actors, but whatever, it´s very funny and try to watch it if you haven´t, it won´t be a waste of time (i even think that this show should last more than 30 min., it should last 60 min). i hope it doesn´t get cancelled. i give it a 9,5.

If you hate BH 90210, you will like this show.
rohan_g7 September 2001
At first, I thought the show would be really sucky, however give it chance and you will be entertained. The episode guest starring/directing former 90210er Jason Priestly was a riot.

I appreciate the the chick who takes a dig at Shannon Dougherty, and the guy who makes a mockery of Luke Perrry. As long as Hollywood celebs keep on making idiots of themselves, this show has at least three seasons.

In conclusion, great show.

Grosse Pointe is the best new comedy...ever. It makes me laugh so hard, and each week I can't wait for the new show to come on the following week. The characters in the show crack me up. I think they should make Dave and Marcy hook up...soon!

Has great potential
JasonH-422 September 2000
Being a major fan of Darren Star's work, specifically his awesome soap "Melrose Place," I decided to give this show a try. I wasn't disappointed in the least. The first episode seems like it was used to set up the future plotlines for the series and introduce the major characters. I was kind of bored until the second act of the show and then it looked like it really was starting to take off. And like all soap operas, the show ends in a cliffhanger. The series is a soap opera about five young adults who work on a soap opera. I could see a few references to Melrose Place within the show. Somebody talking about collagen injections (Lisa Rinna), somebody complains about being stepped on (Josie Bissett), a car accident scene that lands folks in the hospital (a.k.a. the car crash scene on Melrose that injured Michael and "killed" Kimberly). Has potential to be really good. Very satirical. Give it a few more episodes, and we'll see if it sizzles.

There is nothing better
frenzy-1031 March 2001
This tv show is gold. It is the best (and I mean the best) t.v. show on right now. Since I mm from latin america the season finale was on just days ago, and I am not sure if it is going to be on next season. I just ant to say: How many good revews and how many bad have you read? there is only one that says it's not good, everyone else think that this tv show is the best. It became my favorite since the pilot episode. The show has low ratings because its on sunday night. Who watches tv on sunday anyway? Put it on another day, and there is no doubt it will become the highest ratde show ever. I like it because it's fun and it makes me laugh, and I was just hooked after the pilot. I only tune in once a week to watch two shows, FRIENDS, and GROSSE POINTE, and I like grosse pointe better. I'm keeping my fingers crossed to see this show next season. Congratulations!!!! Darren Star, Irene Molly, Al Santos, Lindsay Sloane, Bonnie Somerville, Kohl Sudduth, Kyle Howard, Nat Faxon and William Ragsdale!!! This show rocks, and even if I don't see you next season, I will always remember my favorite show, But I sure hope you're on next season, and next 10 seasons if it's possible!
