Guinea Pig gets silly.
BA_Harrison21 May 2007
After the first two Guinea Pig movies, which could never really be described as 'fun', it comes as something of a surprise to find that the third in the series, He Never Dies, is actually quite lighthearted in comparison. It's still very gory, with some highly convincing and gruesome effects, but a juvenile sense of humour stops this one from being as grim as its predecessors.

Part three is introduced by a serious looking American guy who tells us that what we are about to see is a true story. Call me suspicious, but I don't think he's telling the truth...

An office worker who hates his job, and who has just lost his girlfriend, decides to end his life. However, after slicing open his wrist, he realises that killing himself will be a lot harder than he at first thought: he never dies! Having hacked at his wrists, sliced at his neck, and unsuccessfully tried to strangle himself, the obviously immortal fellow gives up trying to top himself. Instead, he decides to freak out his friend (who is currently banging his ex) by calling him up, inviting him round and then mutilating and dismembering himself in front of the terrified sap (he even guts himself and flings his entrails at the poor bloke).

By the time he has finished, he has reduced himself to nothing more than a talking severed head on a table.

I have noticed that several people on IMDb have compared this film to the early works of Peter Jackson, but even though there are the common denominators of comedy and outrageous gore, I don't think He Never Dies is either as funny or as wholly entertaining as the gore classics from the Kiwi wunderkind.

It is, however, a very peculiar film, and worth seeing, I guess, if you're a fan of silly splatter or truly bizarre cinema. And it's only 39 minutes long!

5.5/10, rounded up to 6 for IMDb.

The Za ginipiggu-series goes comedy!
Boba_Fett11384 April 2009
The previous Za ginipiggu movies were all quite serious movies, featuring as much blood and gore as possible, without serving a purpose- or try to tell a story really. This entry picks a more light approach, making this movie more like a comedy than anything else really. It makes the movie a more pleasant and entertaining watch, which in return also makes this a better and less pointless movie to watch than its predecessors.

Yes, of course the movie still features lots of blood, when a man tries to commit suicide in multiple different ways but fails each time. It makes the movie strangely morbidly funny. The guy is a looser, who can't even commit suicide right. It's comedy doesn't make its gore any less gory though, just more easy to handle.

Its different approach of things makes this definitely a better and as well a more entertaining movie to watch. It's still a pretty pointless movie but it's fun nonsense.

some gross effects but overall a bit stupid
trashgang28 November 2013
What a flow those flicks have in the Guinea Pig franchise. This one is purely made for the fun of it but for me it wasn't funny at all. If you watch the end credits then you can see that they really had a big time making this and I must say that the effects really looked great and are almost the real thing but the story itself was a bit terrible.

One man is so depressed and bored that he cuts himself with a razor. Thinking by slashing his wrist he is going to die suddenly he notices that he doesn't feel any pain at all and the bleeding do stops. Next try, a pencil being pulled through his arm and still no pain. Time for revenge. He asks a friend of him to come over who is now with his ex girlfriend. Once the friend comes over to the apartment the gore comes in. It's harakiri time and it's all well done but at the end of the day it's a big farce for me. The funny moments added just didn't work out for me. It do contains some gory moments and a tittie shot but overall I found it a bit lame.

A laugh riot! ...And I'm being serious!
Cowman10 February 2001
This absolutely hilarious (seriously!) gore flick documents the life of a bored businessman who just broke up with his sexy girlfriend. One evening in a fit of restlessness and depression he slits his wrists, only to find himself healthy again within minutes. He soon discovers that he will never die no matter what kind of mutilation and desecration he inflicts upon himself. Knowing this, our hero exacts revenge on his ex's new beau by grossing the poor guy out, making him witness all kinds of disgusting self-abuse, including having internal organs thrown at him. The gore is unbelievably realistic and stomach-churning, but at the same time it's so extreme and over-the-top that you know it's supposed to be humorous as well as repulsive. Definitely the funniest entry in the GUINEA PIG series. Also, be sure to stick around for the credits.

Oddball entry in the Guinea Pig series.
poolandrews29 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Guinea Pig 3: He Never Dies is set in Japan & tells the story of an office worker named Hideshi (Masahiro Satô) who becomes depressed with his boring life, after not turning up for work for four straight days not one person from the office bother's to call him. Hideshi decides to kill himself, he picks up a knife & cuts deeply into his wrist but doesn't die & feels no pain. Hideshi quickly realises that he cannot die, Hideshi tries to kill himself but strangulation & even cuts his own throat but he continues to live. Hideshi phones his work mate & invites him round to his place in order to give him the fright of his life...

This Japanese production was directed by Masayuki Kusumi & is the third entry in the notorious Guinea Pig series of films, a rather silly & pointless little tale Guinea Pig 3: He Never Dies is nothing special although it is different. A sort of demented sitcom with added gore nothing here makes any sense or is explained, why Hideshi cannot die is a mystery while his motives for chopping himself up once he discovers that he cannot die are also none existent. At a brisk forty minutes long (with three minutes of those counting for the closing credits) at least it's short & moves along quickly enough but there';s little here to engage the viewer apart from it's bizarre central concept which had potential but is wasted on a silly script. This doesn't really even feel like a proper film to be honest, just a collection of incidents that don't add up to anything. There are also scenes that bookend Guinea Pig 3: he Never Dies featuring an American scientist who rambles on about nothing in particular. After the first two brutal Guinea Pig films this is the direction the rest of the series went in, sloppy fake looking gore centered around a basic story.

Guinea Pig 3: He Never Dies features a fair bit of gore during it's duration but none of it is particularly convincing or as brutal or harrowing as the earlier Guinea Pig films. Hidesh cuts deep into his wrist, he impales a pen through his arm complete with comedy sound effect, cuts his own hand off, slits his throat, cuts into his stomach & pulls his insides out & ends up as a decapitated head on a table. The special effects vary, the wrist slitting is quite impressive but the other effects are less so. Certainly not scary this tries to be extreme & nasty & is once or twice but overall I was quite unmoved while watching it.

Filmed in Japan in Japanese you will have to sit through a subtitled version, not that the story makes any sense anyway & you could probably watch this without subtitles & still follow it easily enough. This looks really cheap, it looks like it was shot on an 80's camcorder & has a horribly flat & tinny video look to it. This is one ugly looking thing. The end credits feature a few scenes from the film played in reverse & then an outtake featuring the three main leads goofing around in front of the camera.

Guinea Pig 3: He Never Dies is an oddball curiosity, a relic from another country & time that is unique if nothing else. I can't say I loved it but at least it's short & has a few gory moments. A bit of a disappointment really though if I'm honest.

One for completists only
DVD_Connoisseur11 April 2007
"He Never Dies" is a low-point of the "Guinea Pig" series. I'm a fan of light-hearted horror when it's done right ("Shaun of the Dead" and the blacker than black "The Evil Dead", "Braindead" and "Re-Animator" are examples of excellent humorous horror films) but this Japanese production failed to tickle my funny bone.

The production values are the same as other "Guinea Pig" films but the plot is weak and the delivery wooden. The pay-off involving an immortal geek mutilating himself in-front of a cowering love-rival wearing an Elvis mask is just bizarre.

A small observation I made during viewing this film was that it seems to have borrowed music from Rick Wakeman's "The Burning" soundtrack for one sequence.

This is one for completists only. Twenty years ago, these films were hard-hitting and covering new ground for a generation of gore-hounds craving something different. Now, installments like "He Never Dies" just look a little silly. Not a patch on the multi-coloured delights of "Mermaid in the Manhole."

My favorite of the Guinea Pig series so far
Humdinger6921 October 2013
Like the other Guinea Pig movies, the beginning tries to convince us that what we're seeing is real (though I highly doubt it was meant to be serious this time around), but unlike the other Guinea Pig movies, this movie is so comically over-the-top and beyond unrealistic that not even Charlie Sheen could mistake it for reality.

A depressed man slits his wrist only to find he cannot die nor even feel pain, he inflicts more self-harm to prove this for sure, and then when he's finally convinced himself that it's not a dream, invites his friend over, who is sleeping with immortal guy's girlfriend Kyoko, and gets his revenge on him by grossing him out and throwing intestines at him. I don't want to spoil too much but the ending is equal parts ludicrous and amusing.

The entire movie is very goofy, and funny in several places. Surprisingly, it's also pretty gross, the wrist cutting scene and the throat slicing scene are both more unnerving than any of the serious gore and violence in the previous Guinea Pig installments. As usual with the Guinea Pig movies, the gore effects look pretty good. I hope they made at least one of the remaining Guinea Pig installments like this one instead of trying to be shocking with plot less torture. Off to Mermaid In A Manhole!

crap...
mr_piles13 September 2006
what a pile of absolute shite... after watchin guinea 2 (haven't seen 1 yet, but it's coming), i can't believe that this is attached in any way to the second one...

the 2nd was, in certain respects, something to be watched... probably give it a 4-5 rating... but this, instead of a development is not only a step backwards, but also indeed a cheapening catalyst for the guinea pig 2... it has a demeaning effect upon the 2nd, and serves no purpose but to highlight extremely bad acting (which i can handle if there are other redeeming facets to a film), extremely bad direction, and a truly pathetic attempt to shock anyone over 12...

this is indeed true bullshit...

Blood, Blood, and More Blood
MovieManiac4227 February 2008
This is the third film out of the Guinea Pig series. Like the two previous films this film focuses on blood and gore with the hopes of disgusting its viewers. But unlike the first two this film takes the practice of presenting vile imagery in a new approach... A humorous one.

The film is supposed to be a reenactment of an event that actually took place. Supposedly a man was found dead in his apartment. The scene looked so horrific, as his body was badly mutilated and it appeared as though the remains had been played with. But after further investigation no fingerprints, other than the victims, were found at the scene of the crime, and all the injuries were angled as though the victim did it with his own hands...

This is the first splatter comedy to come out of the Guinea Pig series, and is a real joy ride. The film is very over the top, and I recommend it to any gorehounds out there.

Funny blood'n'guts shocker
mandiapple23 December 2002
I thought this film's obvious brutal violence was lifted by two things:

1) the fact that unlike most other Ginipiggu films, the gore was all self-inflicted by the lead character, Hideshi, and 2) it really is a funny film. Seriously! I think the weird experiment of trying to make what is after all an incredibly manic and extreme film into a laff riot actually paid off. Not only does it lessen the nastiness to a tolerable excess, but it forces you to have sympathy with Hideshi and giggle along with him at his daft predicament. By the end credits, everyone involved is unable to keep a straight face. Easily my favourite of the series.

a couple of good gory scenes, otherwise...meh
knifeintheeye9 June 2006
A lot of people on a lot of boards talk about the GP series as a good introduction to serious gore.

The series of films in question, are video movies trying (by mid 1980's standards) to be as graphic as possible. Some are filmed to be serious snuff films (and more then a few people believed that they were!) and some, like HE NEVER DIES, are meant to be more humorous.

I sought out a few titles from this series and this was the first one I watched. At 40 minutes, it was an easy watch and I at no point felt queasy. The gore itself was all self inflicted and done with a humorous bent. It's about a worker who felt unappreciated at work, and wanted to end his life, and what happens to him when he tries to end it.

I wasn't truly disappointed but I suppose I just expected more.

Occasionally funny and creepy
Horst_In_Translation20 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This is the third "Guinea Pig" movie and if you read this review, you have probably already seen the first two films. Still, this one is a bit different. There is no real sexual component in there. In films 1 and 2, the protagonists were aroused for what they did to helpless girls and so were some people watching these perhaps. However, it's finally about equality here. A man tries to commit suicide after his girlfriend left him for another man. However, it's not working out as he realizes he is immortal. So what does he do. He invites the guy who took his girl from him and gives him the shock of a lifetime when he starts ripping out his organs with the other guy watching. This may sound pretty cruel, but there is definitely a comedic aspect to this movie, something the first two films also lacked. If that is a good thing, you have to decide for yourself. There was something unique though to the ending when he only has his head left for him and everything was torn apart and he was still laughing and going completely nuts. This film really does not have any great production values, but it could turn out as a guilty pleasure. It was made almost 30 years ago already and runs for roughly 40 minutes. The only somewhat interesting factor that was not comedy was for me the question of guilt in this one. Is the main character guilty of anything? He actually did try to commit suicide so he won't cause any harm to others. But he was not allowed to. Does that make him guilty of what he does to the other man. Then there is of course the argument of insanity and the mitigating factors that the other guy took his girl from him and that he also committed fraud at the office where he works. In any case, this should not be taken as a serious drama. the only way to somewhat enjoy it is as a comedy slasher film. There is certainly something ironic to the ending with the talking head lying around and all the girl can think of is how she has to clean the place from all the blood and guts. Neither the lead actor nor the director of this film have worked on many other projects in the past and maybe that's a good thing. All in all, it's not a good movie and I cannot recommend it.

The title couldn't be more true
GoregirlRYM23 January 2006
I found this to be the most enjoyable of the Guinea Pigs I've viewed. It's light hearted good clean fun (okay so i'm exaggerating a smidge). A man is depressed and spends the entire movie trying to kill himself in hilarious ways. It's actually very upbeat, the music is amusingly inappropriate for a suicide situation. Basically it's a good little comedy that is only about 1 hour long about creative ways to commit suicide despite the fact that you just can't succeed. You don't even need subtitles to appreciate this little flick. As far as the Guinea Pig series goes, it's likely one of the least sadistic and bloodless, but the humour and character makes up for it entirely.

Guinea 'Laughter' Pig
salemzin10 October 2023
"Ginî piggu 3: Senritsu! Shinanai otoko" (1986) does not prove to be a strong short film in any of the aspects evaluated, including script, direction, gore, photography and any other point that can be mentioned.

Compared to previous titles in the series, the first film in the short film franchise lacked a structured narrative, but managed to make up for it with its snuff atmosphere and shocking scenes. The second title offered disturbing scenes skillfully executed for its time, becoming an icon within extreme cinema. However, the third title in the franchise adopted a type of humor completely disconnected from the tone of the previous shorts, breaking the atmosphere that the franchise had established in the first two titles.

With the introduction of caricatured characters, exaggerated humor and the absence of its characteristic dark atmosphere, the short film "Ginî piggu 3" provokes feelings of boredom, embarrassment and disgust from the beginning until its conclusion.

Tedious mostly, audacious also
fertilecelluloid1 January 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This third installment in the Guinea Pig cycle prostitutes its way to wider acceptability with humor.

Trouble is, the humor is so juvenile it's tedious.

A salaryman decides to off himself. He cuts off his own hand, rips out his innards and saws through his throat with a long knife.

Unfortunately (for him), these gory acts don't kill him...they only make him stronger and more determined to find other ways of suiciding.

Considering the fact that these productions are shot on video (which is a very harsh, unforgiving medium), the special make-up effects are pretty amazing. If they had been filmed and lit more low key, they'd be almost perfect.

HE NEVER DIES becomes even sillier when our hero's best buddy and girlfriend turn up.

Definitely miles removed from the mean-spirited hijinks of the previous two installments, this is mildly amusing if you shuttle from gore scene to gore scene.

Still, you have to admire the Japanese for their balls in producing material like this.

A New Meaning for "Belly Laugh"
w00f11 January 2004
A narrator who talks about strange scientific phenomena.

A depressed Japanese software engineer who finds that he can't even commit suicide successfully.

A series of young Japanese talking about how much they hate living in Japan for various reasons (work, relationships, etc.)

A man throwing his own large intestine at his friend.

A severed head cracking jokes on a table.

Yes, this is simultaneously bloody and silly. It has no real direction and almost no story at all.

However, for those who enjoy the occasional bloodbath, it has a very twisted sense of humor that becomes apparent soon after it begins. This extremely offbeat short film gives a new meaning to the word "bellylaugh."

What Was That All About?
CMRKeyboadist29 June 2006
It was just a few days ago that I got the "Guinea Pig" box set, so naturally I have been watching ever film in the series. The first 2 films were rather good then I get to this one. Where the hell did this one come from?

The story opens up with an American talking about the upcoming story being true and how it could possibly happen to you. The story starts with a man who is depressed and isn't getting any respect at work. After staying in his apartment for 4 days in a row, he decides to kill himself. He proceeds to slit his wrists in a gross manner. For some unknown reason this does not kill him so he starts mutilating himself in all sorts of ways.

That is the story. It sounds like it would be cool but it is pulled off in a rather dull comedic manner. I don't think I laughed a single time. But this was just me. It doesn't mean that most people wouldn't find it funny. The gore was always welcome but, for my tastes, it wasn't gory enough (except the wrist scene). Listen for music from the Italian horror film "Demons" when he is slicing his belly open. I thought that was the only humorous part in the whole movie. 6/10

One of My Favorites of the Series
EVOL66613 September 2005
For the most part I've been disappointed with the "infamous" GUINEA PIG series. HE NEVER DIES is one of the exceptions. Basic storyline- guy loves girl, girl leaves guy, guy attempts suicide in sick and twisted ways, all to no avail. This entry in the series is definitely more light-hearted than the previous offerings. As many reviewers have rightly noted, think of a Japanese Peter Jackson short-film. Gory, funny, all around entertaining - one of the best in the GUINEA PIG series. Also check out FLOWER OF FLESH AND BLOOD, and MERMAID IN A MANHOLE - in my opinion the only other GUINEA PIG films worth even bothering with. 8/10 for HE NEVER DIES

A genuinely solid dark comedy, but not for the faint of heart
starlightn23 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The guinea pig series, notorious worldwide for its extreme gore, in my opinion found its comedic footing with the second movie, "Flower Of Flesh And Blood", by including an extremely over exaggerated villain.

But, this movie, "He Never Dies" was a solid comedy throughout.

The basic premise is this : A working class man is ignored at work, is extremely lonely, and just gives up. He quits. But nobody notices he's gone. No calls on his phone. So, naturally, he becomes suicidally depressed.

First, he tries to slit his wrist. But, he doesn't die. So, he continues to cut deeper, but still... He doesn't die. He cuts so deep that his hand comes clean off but still, he doesn't die. But of course, the clue is in the name with this one.

What follows is a brutally gory, but heavily comedic movie, climaxing with disembowelment and finally a beheading.

This movie is definitely not for the squeamish or faint of heart, but I'd have to say that out of the first three movies, this one is the easiest to stomach.

So, if you're a fan of splatter movies, gorefests, et c and you want something to have a laugh with, I highly reccomend this movie.

A Parody of Its Own Franchise
timothygartin13 May 2020
This must be one of the strangest, most unique movies I have seen in years. While I am a fan of shocking, gory horror movies, the Guinea Pig franschise does not really work for me. The first two entries are long on gore and short on story.

Part three is super fun. It is a parody of the series and of gory horror movies in general. It is over-the-top and clever. The lead actor is obviously having a funtime in his role. I've been trying to think of another series where a sequel made fun of its own series. I guess the original Casino Royale did, but there aren't many like this.

I highly recommend this one.

Absolutely sick!!
Pimp-65 August 1999
3rd part in the series of Japanese sickness. Like all the others, this is just plain vile but very funny at the same time.

This is in Japanese so all I can gather of the story is a guy likes a chick, she doesn't like him, so he becomes depressed and tries to kill himself. The only thing is he can't die (hence the title). See him mutilate himself while he has a smirk on his face. The best bit would have to be when he tries to slit his wrists, the blood stops and he just plays with his wound. All this with gut wrenching sound effects.

One of the best in the series!

Comic Relief
attackreflex20 August 2007
You can't sit back and bash this movie like most people do, its actually very good! As we all know Za Ginipiggu, is a very brutal film series. After Flowers of flesh and blood and all the controversy (funny how that was the one that did it and not Devil's experiment lol) ANYWAYS! This is the comic relief of the series, it has the gore and at first you honestly don't know whats going on. But immediately you connect with him being a bored guy who just got out of school and sees how the world works. He as the movie title suggests finds out a secret about himself.

Its dark and hilarious as well with some silly humor, and not funny because its bad or something, its funny because thats how it was made to be. The beginning dark and goes into a roller coaster of fun. After Devil's experiment and Flowers of flesh and blood, this is definitely a good breather and lightens the mood before continuing onto the the next movie of brutality.

My suggestion would be watch it AFTER the first two, you'll enjoy it more.
