A tender but mawkishly simple melodrama about a handicapped painter who falls in love with a misogynistic orphan in Depression-era Nova Scotia, “Maudie” would be impossible to take seriously if not for the fact that it tells a true story. Of course, just because something actually happened doesn’t make it any easier to swallow the sight of it on screen. Despite charming performances from Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke, this saccharine romance — which pities its characters as much as they pity each other, and often veers perilously close to “The Other Sister” territory as a result — rings a bit false from start to finish.

On Tuesday July 19, Hollywood lost a giant in the world of comedy with the passing of beloved director/writer/producer/actor Gary Marshall at the age of 81. While most of the news outlets focused in on his considerable work in television (he practically owned Tuesday nights in the 1970’s with his “Happy Days” empire), this site would like to salute Mr. Marshall’s work on both sides of the camera.
After impressive writing credits on many of the classic sitcoms of the 1960’s, it was inevitable that the movie studios would tap him to contribute to several screenplays. The first was produced in 1968, a marriage comedy starring James Garner and Debbie Reynolds, How Sweet It Is. A youth-oriented romantic comedy starring Jacqueline Bisset, The Grasshopper, was released in 1970. TV triumphs quickly followed, so Marshall’s movie career was put on hold for more than a dozen years. 1982 was the year...

One of Hollywood's key figures passed away yesterday at the age of 81. His work in the past five years has consisted of a string of critically lambasted all star romcoms (Valentines Day, New Year's Eve, Mothers Day) and the day before he died one of the many actor he made famous (Scott Baio of Happy Days & Joanie Loves Chachi fame) embarrassed himself on national television at the Rnc. To put it bluntly, the last few years have not been kind but this is not the legacy that the beloved Garry Marshall deserves. We need to look a little further back. While he was never exactly a critic's darling - let's not rewrite history -- his work often resonated wildly with the public on screens both small and large. And that, my friends, is no small thing with or without a shelf of showbiz trophies.

We’ve all been mentally challenged at the movies. Not very rewarding. Being mentally challenged In the movies, on the other hand, can be the route to cash and prizes (see “Forrest Gump,” “Rain Man,” “I Am Sam,” “Shine”). For all the great performances we’ve seen involving characters who are developmentally disabled, though, they’re very seldom presented as sexually attractive or active – in fact, sexuality itself is typically left out the equation. Sure, there are exceptions—"Benny and Joon," "The Other Sister"—but if erotic attraction arises, it’s generally between intellectual equals. Which is one of the reasons Israeli director Nitzan Giladi’s “The Wedding Doll” caught the attention of audiences when it played at Toronto last month, en route to an Ophir award for star Moran Rosenblatt in Tel Aviv. In "The Wedding Doll," Rosenblatt plays Hagit, a worker in a family-run paper factory who is...

Bob Brunner, a writer-producer on the classic "Happy Days" TV show, who came up with the catch phrase "Sit On It," named Henry Winkler's "Fonzie" and suggested that the character should jump a shark in a now-infamous 1977 episode, has died of a heart attack. He was 78. When "Happy Days" returned in 1977, it was TV's No. 1 show. But then, the writers decided to set the season-opening three-part episode in Hollywood, where Fonzie is invited to take a screen test. In one storyline, he engages in a water-skiing challenge with a local kid and, as a tiebreaker, has to jump a shark in a netted area in the ocean. The phrase "jump the shark" has since come to signify the precise moment when a popular TV show begins its inevitable decline. Outside of "Happy Days," Brunner also wrote for such TV shows as "The Odd Couple," "Laverne and Shirley," and ""Diff'rent Strokes.

Gellar is now set to make her small screen return in her first major TV role since her time on the vampire show came to an end back in 2003. She will take on two roles in new thriller The Ringer, playing estranged twins with very different personalities.
The show's producer, Peter Traugott, tells EW.com, "It's an edgy thriller about redemption and about revenge. There's a point of view of two twin sisters who grew apart over a tragedy in their past.

She's living the life of her more successful sister only to come to find out that her life is equally as fraught with danger and complication. Her sister dies in a boating accident. The other sister takes on her persona, only to come to find out that they have a hit out on her."
Gellar will play both parts, with one sister appearing mostly in flashbacks.

When we first heard about Sarah Michelle Gellar returning to television with the CBS pilot "Ringer," this was our first thought: Squee!
After reading the description for the show (a young woman on the run from the mob, who tries to lay low by pretending to be her wealthy twin sister -- only to realize that she too has a price on her head) we thought: "Gee, can you vague that up for me?" (Come on, did you really think we'd make it two paragraphs without a "Buffy" reference?)
As if the TV Gods were listening to our prayers for more information, EW interviewed the pilot's producer Peter Traugott who revealed a lot more about the project, which was created by "Supernatural's" Eric Charmelo and Nicole Snyder.
Traugott went in to detail about the show's intricate plot.Sure it does still sound a little convoluted, but we're still really intrigued by the concept.

The networks have been on a pilot-greenlighting tear lately. But which possible show has the potential to be a gem of the 2011-12 season? We’ll go out on a limb here: CBS’ in-the-works thriller Ringer, which—should the pilot get the pickup to series during May’s network upfronts—would mark the much-anticipated return of Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar to regular series television. Granted, Gellar acolytes have been titillated by her possible return before with HBO’s The Wonderful Maladys, only to have the pilot never make it to series. But alas, the potential seems to be there with Ringer.

Do you read Maxim magazine? Because I used to. Once in a while, I'll flip through, and remind myself what it is about the rag that I don't find appealing anymore. The articles are occasionally pretty good, and there are moments where you just kind of laugh and enjoy. But everything else just reminds you it's a PG-13 Playboy. It's as if a teenager told his clever mother he only reads the skin mag for the articles, so she goes through with a whiteout brush and draws modest one-piece bathing suits on the spreads and then lets him read it. It's a disappointment. Such is the case with Middle Men, which chronicles the development of 24/7 Billing, which acted as the fingercuffs between the online porn distributors and the horny husbands who wanted to whack it to Lusty Busty Asians in the comfort of their own dens. With the doors locked.

Tuesday night's (April 20) "American Idol" featured the Top Seven tackling "inspirational" songs in honor of "Idol Gives Back," that time of the season when Ryan Seacrest gets to say things like, "When you cast a vote you save lives!" and pat the "Idol" corporate sponsors on the back for donating money to charity.
Alicia "The Princess of Soul" Keys was on hand to mentor the contestants. "I want to teach them how to be part of something that's even bigger than them," she said. Um, the only thing bigger than Michael Lynche is the continent of Asia, so that might be a little tough, Alicia. But I applaud the effort.
Before I go on a rant about Kara's hair, let's get to the performances!

Adam (Hugh Dancy) is an Asper. No, not a member of an alien species the likes of Kevin Spacey in 2001’s K-Pax but a man struggling with Asperger's Syndrome. Asperger’s is a milder, higher-functioning form of autism that makes it difficult for Adam to read people’s emotions. This often renders him socially stunted and writer/director Max Mayer presents us with the store of Adam’s blossoming in this small personal romantic drama.
A challenge facing a film like this nowadays is the division between films like Forrest Gump and say, 2003’s Radio. It is difficult to avoid telling a story of a physically or mentally disabled individual who shows he/she is not disabled but rather differently-abled without coming off as maudlin or saccharine. To put it bluntly, films like Radio and the long-forgotten Giovanni Ribisi/Juliette Lewis romantic comedy The Other Sister go “full retard.” Adam,...

Love Happens: "Cliché. Studio-manufactured quirky florist (Jennifer Aniston) who scrawls odd words, like "quidnunc," behind paintings in a hotel and keeps customer's love notes. Cliché. Widowed self-help author (Aaron Eckhart), who can't seem to follow his own advice. Platitude. Cliché. Bumper-sticker pop-speak. "A-Okay!" Cliché. Let's pass around the 'candle of truth,' why don't we!
Best friend roles: Dan Fogler as arrogant agent (the best part of the movie, which says most of what you need to know about Love Happens). Judy Greer wasted as Female Best Friend (Joan Cusack™). She spouts poetry. Cliché.
Nice dimples, Eckhart." - Dustin Rowles
Amelia: "Amelia is the least interesting movie ever made about anyone who ever lived. Ever. That's not to say the movie doesn't have some minor technical joys: The set and costume design create an authentic feeling of Depression-era America (the first one), and the cinematography from Stuart Dryburgh...

Let's be honest. Juliette Lewis is a strange one. Ever since she broke through in the early 90s in Martin Scorsese's "Cape Fear," she's displayed an off kilter charisma that completely suited her for some crazy characters in flicks such as "Natural Born Killers," "Strange Days" and "The Other Sister" (Ok, maybe not but just had to throw an "Other Sister" reference in there). Now, Drew Barrymore has made the excellent casting choice of having Lewis play the bad girl (or is she?) competition for Ellen Page's character in the new roller derby comedy "Whip It."She's spent most of her 30s,...

I read Erin Nolan's "Leonardo DiCaprio: Top Five/Bottom Five" at Film.com (yes, that's me over there as the first commenter) and I started thinking about how a top ten Leonardo DiCaprio films may be a good list to make, and one I could hammer out relatively quick. Then I took at look at DiCaprio's filmography and realized I couldn't make a list of ten films. I had eight, but not ten. You may be thinking, "Just throw two you think are just okay at the bottom and call it good." Negative, I don't do that. There's no chance I am throwing The Man in the Iron Mask, Romeo + Juliet, The Basketball Diaries or The Quick and the Dead on any list of mine just to fill space. Sorry, those films aren't good enough (or at all) and to put them on a top ten list would be to recognize them as such,...

Crimes • Attempting to spin a story about incest and alcoholism into the feel-good movie of the summer • Featuring more Dramamine-requiring tonal shifts than the average Tyler Perry movie, with a ready-for-drag Jane Fonda as a bat-wielding, teetotaling Madea-type • Being so poorly conceived and executed that a boozed-up, out-of-control Lindsay Lohan somehow winds up being the best thing the movie has going for it. (She's still bad, though.) Defender: Director Garry Marshall (Pretty Woman, The Other Sister) Tone of commentary: Affably listless, with long stretches of silence and lots of mundane examples of "movie magic" at work. Marshall has long been one of the most personable, funny directors in Hollywood, but the synapses in his brain aren't quite firing like they used to, which leads to anecdotes and observations that tend to trail...

His plans go awry when he meets the woman of his dreams (Westfeldt) at the airport and decides to stay in town one more night to date her. Montgomery plays the sexy, free-swinging best friend of Schneider's character. Australia-born Montgomery is repped by CAA and Peg Donegan at Framework.
