Organizers of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the world’s oldest and most important animation festival, revealed Thursday that all the big U.S. studio animation players will be in attendance this year to preview some of their most exciting upcoming titles.
Annecy has long been a launch point for global and indie animation, but over the past several years, it has become an increasingly important platform for big studios as well. This year, that trend continues and, indeed, ramps up.
Illumination will continue a popular tradition by hosting a special screening of “Despicable Me 4” in Annecy. The three previous “Despicable” films and the “Minions: The Rise of Gru” spinoff all screened at Annecy, several of them making their world premieres there.
Disney will host sneak peeks of its 2024 animated feature releases: Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” and Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Moana 2.” Paramount Pictures and Hasbro...

After desperately clinging to his dream project, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, when the film got postponed by decades, Terry Gilliam shifted his focus to The Brothers Grimm. Making a winning combination from the start, Gilliam used his specialization in the bleak and strange to turn Heath Ledger and Matt Damon’s 2005 movie into the most beloved, dark fairy tales of all time.
Matt Damon in The Brothers Grimm
Although The Brothers Grimm featured a stellar cast including Jonathan Pryce, Monica Bellucci, Lena Headey, and more, it was reported that Terry Gilliam initially wanted Johnny Depp instead of Matt Damon. Considering Gilliam’s preference towards Depp, even Damon was baffled when he was hired for the $105M movie, in place of the Pirates star.

Lionsgate currently has distribution deals in place with The Roku Channel and Peacock, but will they survive the studio’s split from one company into two?
The long-promised split of the Lionsgate movie studio from the Starz cable/streaming bundle is getting underway in April. A new report from Deadline indicates that the studio will merge with a special purpose acquisition company (Spac) in April, and will begin trading on the Nasdaq under a different symbol than Starz.
The plan is for Lionsgate to be fully split from Starz by the end of 2024. Once the split is complete, Starz and its properties like “Outlander” and the “Power” franchise would be available for acquisition. The transactions should not have an effect on licensing deals between Lionsgate and streaming partners like Peacock and The Roku Channel. Sign Up $5.99+ / month peacocktv.com

Starz hasn’t offered this deal since August of 2023, and it’s not likely to stick around for long!
This particular moment in time is a tricky one to be searching for a new streaming platform. The NFL season is over, so subscribing to a service that carries NFL games won’t bring any extra value until September. Scripted TV series are still making their way back to airwaves after the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, so there are few marquee titles that will draw fans to one streamer over another.
Fortunately, Starz is offering a fantastic incentive to potential subscribers on the hunt for a new favorite show: 70% off your subscription for three months! That will drop the price of a Starz subscription to $2.99 per month, and you’ll stay at that price for the next 90 days.

Aaron Stanford is returning to the MCU, as it was revealed in the Deadpool & Wolverine trailer released during the Superbowl on Sunday. He is reprising the role of Pyro which he portrayed in X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand.
“I’m very excited to be revisiting this role, and couldn’t think of a better place for Pyro’s resurrection than the Deadpool universe,” Standford tells Deadline in a statement.
While details as to the plot of the film have thus far been under wraps, director Shawn Levy told Deadline at last year’s Toronto Film Festival that the goal was for the film to feel “grounded” and “real” — more like “a descendant of Midnight Run, and 48 Hours, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles” than “a descendant of Airplane.”

Throughout the 96-year history of the Academy Awards, the amount of acting lineups consisting only of first-time nominees has reached 37, or about 10% of the overall total. While that number may not seem high in a general sense, these cases actually outnumber those exclusively involving veteran contenders by a ratio of three to one. However, although this list expanded as recently as 2023, rookie-only acting lineups are gradually becoming less common than veteran-only ones, the amount of which has nearly doubled within the last dozen years.
Whereas 75% of veteran-only acting quintets have involved lead performers rather than supporting ones, almost the exact opposite is true of lineups full of newcomers. For instance, only one existing case of the former kind concerns supporting actresses, whereas the same category has produced 15 rookie-only rosters. The last such group consisted of 2000 winner Angelina Jolie and nominees Toni Collette (“The Sixth Sense”), Catherine Keener (“Being John Malkovich...

The Monty Python legend and director of 12 Monkeys and Brazil will be receiving his first Aardman Slapstick award for visual comedy next month. Ask him anything here

"Star Trek: Picard" shares more than a little DNA with "12 Monkeys." In its third season, the recently ended "Trek" sequel series was captained by showrunner Terry Matalas, who co-created the wild Syfy Channel adaptation of Terry Gilliam's also-wild film. Aside from a shared showrunner, "Star Trek: Picard" was home to several key cast and crew members who worked on both shows – and nearly featured one more.
In a Reddit Ama about the show's third season, user Drewski1138 pointed out several narrative choices in "Picard" that echoed "12 Monkeys," including references to a mysterious red realm, a new drug called "Splinter" (a reference to "12 Monkeys" time travel), and more. After months of not knowing whether Lionsgate would spin off its studio or the Starz cable/streaming bundle, we now have a bit more clarity.
After months of speculation and analysis, there is finally some movement on the Lionsgate front. Now, reports indicate that Lionsgate has made its decision, which will see its TV and movie studio spun off and merged with a special-purpose acquisition company (Spac).
Lionsgate will merge with Screaming Eagle Acquisition Corp to form Lionsgate Studios Corp. Brad Pitt is as pure a movie star as they come, but if anything a large swath of his work is often overlooked. To celebrate the Missourian’s 60th birthday, Variety chief film critic Owen Gleiberman and Senior Awards Editor Clayton Davis look at the 20 best roles of Pitt’s career.
From “Interview With The Vampire” to “Fight Club” Pitt has morphed into hero, villain and even the (beloved) simpleminded trainer Chad Feldheimer for the Coen Brothers film “Burn After Reading.”
Just a few years shy of his best actor win for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” his portrayal of Cliff Booth in Quentin Tarantino’s film is widely considered the high-water mark of his career. But it’s certainly not the first film to grant him award’s buzz. “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “Burn After Reading,” “Moneyball” all landed him past nods for his acting as...

Brad Pitt celebrated his second Oscar win thanks to his stuntman role in the Quentin Tarantino film “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Although he’d previously won a Best Picture victory for producing “12 Years a Slave” (2013), the Best Supporting Actor trophy was his first for acting, despite three previous nominations (plus an additional two in Picture).
He could easily have become just another pretty Hollywood face – a flash in the pan romantic lead or action star. However Pitt studied acting and worked his way up the ladder to become one of the industry’s most versatile and most well-recognized actors, as well as one of the most influential as the owner of a successful award-winning production company.
Born in Oklahoma, he was raised in Springfield, Mo, where he participated in a variety of sports and activities in high school, and went on to college with a major in journalism.

Former Monty Python member, animator and visionary director Terry Gilliam told Variety at the Red Sea Film Festival on Sunday that he wants Johnny Depp to play Satan in his new film “Carnival at the End of Days.”
Gilliam summarized the plot as: “God wipes out humanity and the only character who wants to save them is Satan, and Johnny Depp plays Satan.”
Gilliam was attending the screening at Red Sea of a double bill of the documentaries “Lost in La Mancha” and “He Dreams of Giants,” both of which document Gilliam’s cursed and grueling attempt to make the film “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.” The film ultimately premiered in Cannes in 2018, starring Jonathan Pryce and Adam Driver.
The producer of the documentaries, Lucy Darwin, was also on stage with Gilliam to explain to the audience how she went from being a publicist on “The Adventures of Baron Munchausen...

Are multiverses consistent with Christian theology? Personally, I have my doubts, but in Angel Studios’ religious-minded sci-fi thriller “The Shift,” the notion that there could be infinite parallel realities offers an original, if flawed model to test its main character’s faith.
Here’s how it works: A churchgoing man named Kevin (Kristoffer Polaha) meets and marries his dream woman, Molly (Elizabeth Tabish), only to have his happy life whisked away from him by a steely-eyed stranger who calls himself “the Benefactor” (Neal McDonough). Kevin’s desperate to get back to his wife, but this Benefactor guy seems determined to rattle his convictions, trying to force Kevin to reject his beliefs and go along with the rest of society’s atheist attitudes.
That’s where the movie’s other big biblical connection comes in. “The Shift” is billed as a contemporary retelling of the book of Job, in which God...

With his 1995 film "12 Monkeys," director Terry Gilliam found a Hollywood-scale Trojan horse through which he could launder bleak, dystopian visions into a major science-fiction hit. The filmmaker had clashed with Hollywood before, struggling to bring his provocative, idiosyncratic work to life in an industry that prioritized homogeneity. His chaotic approach to filmmaking had led not just to issues in the industry — it also terrified Sarah Polley, the child star of his 1988 film "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen."
But "12 Monkeys" would suggest, for a minute, an attempt of Gilliam's to walk the line between art and commercial Hollywood. That Gilliam was able to use major movie stars like Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis, each at peaks in their careers, and have them totally sacrifice any sense of celebrity vanity, spoke volumes to his confidence in the material. How many sci-fi blockbusters were based on experimental French New Wave short films?...

Thierry Frémaux is best known internationally as the long-time head of France’s Cannes Film Festival, which is organized out of its offices in Paris’s trendy Marais neighborhood.
The double-hatted cinema expert is perhaps more in his element in his home city of Lyon, where he is the director of the Institut Lumière, situated on the site of the former mansion and factory of cinema pioneers Auguste and Louis Lumière.
Alongside its late co-founders Bernard Chardère and Bertrand Tavernier, Frémaux has been a driving force behind the expansion of the institute and its activities, including the creation of its classic cinema-focused Lumière Film Festival, which has just wrapped its 15th edition.

Netflix’s latest time-travel mystery thriller, Bodies, has already become quite a rage. You’d have finished binge-watching it, most likely through one sleepless night. And now you are in the very familiar state of void again, which always hits after completing a series as engrossing as this one. You are now here, in need of something that can fill the void and make life meaningful again. Well, you have come to the right place after all. Although I have always maintained that no two shows are ever quite the similar, the ones that you are going to find in this list are going to work for you if you have loved Bodies. Some of the entries are going to be quite predictable, but there’s also going to be some surprises here. Here we go.

U.S. writer-director Terry Gilliam had the crowd in stitches throughout his masterclass at the Lumière Film Festival, where he presented the restored version of his 1995 cult movie “12 Monkeys.”
The former Monty Python member, whose career as a director started with the 1975 satirical comedy “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” said that while he was keen to approach difficult subjects, he had learnt from Mary Poppins the secret of success.
“She taught me that the sugar helps the medicine go down,” he quipped, to the audience’s delight.
On a more serious note, Gilliam said that his main goal as a filmmaker was “to make films that make you think about the world in a different way.”
Rejecting the way reality is presented by the media, which he described as “too limited,” Gilliam said it could be “more fascinating, bizarre and surprising.”

Bruce Willis burst onto the American entertainment scene as the glib, smart-alecky detective David Addison Jr. opposite Cybill Shepherd’s Maddie Haynes in ABC’s Moonlighting, a show that helped launch the dramedy genre. Willis was not long for the small screen, though, with his his sharp tongue and sarcastic wit destined for bigger things.
More than 90 films and $5.3 billion later, Willis has played a smart-aleck New York detective in the Die Hard series, a smart-aleck oil driller-turned-astronaut in Armageddon, a smart-aleck cop in The Last Boy Scout, a smart-aleck gangster in Last Man Standing, a smart-aleck soldier in Tears of the Sun … well, you get the picture.
When he wasn’t cracking wise, Willis played many other memorable roles in films that included The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990), Billy Bathgate (1991), Color of Night (1994), 12 Monkeys (1995), The Fifth Element (1997), The Sixth Sense (1999) The Story of Us (1999), Looper (2012) and Motherless Brooklyn...

Note: Today marks Bruce Willis’s 68th birthday. We wanted to take a moment to wish the icon a very happy birthday and reflect on his career:
Here at JoBlo – we love Bruce Willis. When we heard back in March of 2022 that he would step back from acting due to his tragic Aphasia diagnosis, we were as shocked as everyone else, even if there were signs that things weren’t great with Willis going back a number of years. His last truly prominent role was M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass in 2019, while his last lead role was in Eli Roth’s Death Wish. Since then, it’s been chiefly VOD movies for Willis, where his roles were secondary at best. With his recent frontotemporal dementia diagnosis, we now know the truth.
Whatever the case, we here at JoBlo Originals wish to extend our very best to the man and his family at this difficult time.

This post contains spoilers through "Star Trek: Picard" season 3, episode 5.
This season of "Star Trek: Picard" has been more than well-received by critics and fans. The show gives us "The Next Generation" movie we never got, and also introduced us to the irascible Captain Shaw, the captain of the U.S.S. Titan, who is far less enamored with Picard and Riker than others in Starfleet. Shaw is played by Todd Stashwick ("12 Monkeys"), who — as a Trek fan himself — is enjoying taking on the role.
"There's a shot in [the latest episode] that will just live in my little nerdy heart for the rest of my life," Stashwick told me in an interview a few days before the season's fifth episode dropped. "It is Shaw in the captain's seat with Picard on his right and Riker on his left, and just this great framed shot of the three of us. I'm flying my ship with my crew,...

This Star Trek: Picard article contains spoilers.
The 21st Rule of Acquisition teaches us “Never place friendship above profit.” By that measure, no one has proven to be less Ferengi than Terry Matalas. The Star Trek: Picard showrunner has always made a point of including his friends in his series, even if only in fun cameos. Take season two of Picard, which saw Impractical Joker Brian Quinn drop by as a dog walker in Guinan’s bar, or the addition of 12 Monkeys star Todd Stashwick to the Picard cast as USS Titan Captain Liam Shaw (Matalas co-created the Syfy series). It’s clear the showrunner likes inside jokes, even if the audience doesn’t always get it.
That tendency is on full display in the latest episode of Picard season 3, “Disengage.” While investigating the terrorist attack from the last episode, Raffi’s now-unofficial Starfleet intelligence mission leads her to a Ferengi criminal called Sneed.

On "12 Monkeys," the 2015 TV series based on Terry Gilliam's 1995 feature film, actor Todd Stashwick played a character named Theodore Decaon, the leader of a dangerous band of scavengers and outlaws in the year 2043. Deacon only appeared occasionally throughout the show's first season, becoming a proper regular character for its remaining three. "12 Monkeys" was developed by Terry Matalas, who was previous a writer on "Star Trek: Enterprise" and "Nikita," and who would go on to write and/or showrun Syfy's "Blood Drive" and the network's new "MacGyver" series. Matalas is currently the showrunner for the newest season of "Star Trek: Picard." Not incidentally, Stashwick also appears on it.
On "Picard," Stashwick plays the gruff and plainspoken Capt. Liam Shaw, commander of the U.S.S. Titan-a. Unlike previous starship captains on "Star Trek," Capt. Shaw has no interest in being friendly with his crew. He doesn't establish trust,...

If a viewer's only experience with Starfleet captains is Capt. Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), one could easily get the impression that everyone in that position is stalwart, professional, clear-headed, and just the right blend of aloof and approachable. Picard was always a stern professional, leading by example and professionalism. He was hardly warm but indicated that he was always open to listening to his crew's suggestions during a crisis. Picard is like the college professor you don't want to disappoint — it feels good to earn his approval because you know his standards are high.
Of course, several of Picard's professional peers take a very different approach. Capt. Sisko (Avery Brooks) had a short temper and led through heated debate. Sisko was a more passionate captain than Picard, lacking in patience and less worried about propriety. Capt. Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) was seemingly warm, but over the course of "Star Trek: Voyager,...

Early in 1987, producers Larry Gordon and Joel Silver were on the hunt for an action hero. They were working on a rollercoaster tale about terrorists hijacking a high-rise tower in Los Angeles and the script called for a muscle-bound bruiser.
For contractual reasons, Frank Sinatra was top of the list for Die Hard. Ol’ Blue Eyes had first refusal as he’d been the star of 1968’s The Detective, which like Die Hard was based on author Roderick Thorp’s thriller novels.
When the 70-year-old crooner confirmed his terrorist-fighting days were long behind him, producers went straight to the most obvious candidate: Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Terminator, Commando and Predator star said no, preferring to try his hand at comedy alongside Danny DeVito in Twins. The rejections kept coming: Richard Gere, Burt Reynolds, Harrison Ford, Sylvester Stallone, Nick Nolte, Don Johnson and Mel Gibson all passed.
Way down the list was Bruce Willis.

Actor Bruce Willis has been newly diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, a serious indication of a progression of the aphasia his family announced in 2022.
Willis’ family made the new announcement today.
“Ftd is a cruel disease that many of us have never heard of and can strike anyone,” says the statement, attributed to Willis’ wife Emma Hemming Willis, ex-wife Demi Moore and children Rumer, Scout, Tallulah, Mabel and Evelyn.
In March 2022, the family announced that the Die Hard, Armageddon and Pulp Fiction star was “stepping away” from acting due to aphasia, a condition that affects ability to speak, write and understand language.
Today, the family updated that news, writing, “Since we announced Bruce’s diagnosis of aphasia in spring 2022, Bruce’s condition has progressed and we now have a more specific diagnosis: frontotemporal dementia (known as Ftd). Unfortunately, challenges with communication are just one symptom of the disease Bruce faces. While this is painful,...

After Bruce Willis’ family announced in March 2022 that the 67-year old actor had been diagnosed with aphasia and would retire from acting, his condition has now progressed into frontotemporal dementia.
His family posted a statement on Thursday about Willis’ latest diagnosis.
“Since we announced Bruce’s diagnosis of aphasia in spring 2022, Bruce’s condition has progressed and we now have a more specific diagnosis: frontotemporal dementia (known as Ftd). Unfortunately, challenges with communication are just one symptom of the disease Bruce faces. While this is painful, it is a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis,” his family wrote in a statement on the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration’s website.
Rumer Willis also shared the news, along with a photo of her father, on Instagram.

Bruce Willis has been newly diagnosed with a “more specific” dementia condition, his family said Thursday in a lengthy statement.
Willis, 67, stepped away from his acting career in March of last year after his initial diagnosis of aphasia, a condition that affects his ability to speak and to understand language.
However, according to the family’s statement, “his symptoms have since progressed and are no longer limited to challenges with communication, leading to his recent diagnosis of Ftd.”

Thanks to the third season of Star Trek: Picard, good things continue to happen in threes for the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew.
Season three of Tng famously course-corrected the then-struggling syndicated series creatively, when executive producer Rick Berman brought on the late Michael Piller as showrunner. He and his writing staff worked to level set the show and find a narrative tone that more firmly established Tng’s identity, leading to some of the series — and Trek’s — finest hours. Now, more than 30 years later, for the second time, another pivotal third season centered on the Next Gen crew achieves a similar narrative feat – thanks to showrunner Terry Matalas.
The former co-creator of Syfy’s 12 Monkeys and his team reached back into what Piller did with Captain Picard and the crew of the Enterprise-d, while also deepening the characters and their relationships in ways that fans have never seen before.
