A little weird
Juni78ukr31 December 2004
Bingo is a very strange movie. It's not a bad one, but it missed the target because it's not completely a kids animal movie like many others as well as it's not completely a spoof to such movies. And such half-and-half as a rule has very little chances for success. The beginning and the ending of the story are incredibly typical for an animal family flick but all the rest of it is quite different. Well, it was so silly and at the same time so funny. Personally, I laughed many times watching this strange movie (and I'm not a spoof fan), but as in every silly comedy there was nothing especially memorable in this movie. Humor in many ways is typical for a kids friendly movie, though sometimes it becomes a bit crude for such movies. The language also is too strong for a family movie. Overall, I found Bingo funny and enjoyable enough for watching once, but definitely before watching it you should know what kind of movies you are going to watch.

My grade 5.6 out of 10. Sorry for my bad English.

I don't like Bingo Night. I would rather play the tabletop game, then see this dog movie again.
ironhorse_iv12 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
At least, the tabletop game was a lot more fun than this film. Bingo, the comedy film was dog-crap. As a kid of the 1990s, this kid movie was really hard watch at the time. Directed by Matthew Robbins, the film tells the story of a circus dog named Bingo trying to reconnect with his owner, Chuckie Devlin (Robert J. Steinmiller Jr.), when both of them, got separate on a recent move to another state. Can Bingo find Chuck or will Bingo end up, being abandoned? Watch the movie to find out, if you want to! Without spoiling the movie, too much, I have to say, this movie was pretty damn dark for a kid's film. It was really shocking to find out, that this film was rated PG at the time; due to fact, that the film has a lot of swelling, over-drinking, sex related themes and some rather graphic violence. However, it's the disturbing scenes that take the cake for me. There are tons of intense scenes where animals are being turn into meat sausages, going through fires, or getting shot at. That's hardly the worst, as the film really veer off from being acceptable as a family film, as adult-theme gags are introduce, such as Bingo meeting a sleazy prostitute named Bunny (Tamsin Kelsey), a large knife wielding escape prison convict, "Four-Eyes" (Wayne Robson), and a bunch of criminals, Lennie (Kurt Fuller), and Eli (Joe Guzaldo) who loves torturing children. Honestly, I have no clue, who this film was gear for? It's marketed as a kid movie, but most of the jokes seem for adults. I really doubt, any adults of a certain age would find this movie, fantastic to watch. After all, they could just watch, funnier more recent adult-driven comedies with dogs like 2011's TV Show 'Wilfred" or "Family Guy". The only ones, I can see, rewatching this film are the kids now turn adults like myself, just wanting to rant about it. However, that viewership is slim to none, since this movie bomb at the box office, went it came out. For children; I really doubt, kids of today, would find this film, very interesting, due to the fact, that, it's a bit dated. Also, because that there has been a large surge of unwatchable child-friendly dog movies that been circulating kid's film genre as of late. Not only has those films really oversaturate the market, but it makes films like this, harder to stand out. In my opinion, films like these, don't have a chance in being a good dramatic heart-warming film, compare to films like 2009's 'Hachi: A Dog's Tale' or 2008's 'Marley & Me'. Even, as adventure comedy about a dog trying to get back with its owner, this movie really fails to be, very entertaining as a kid's film. Films like 1993's 'Homeward Bound: Incredible Journey' shows a great mix of humor and heart. This movie hardly shows that. Most of the human characters are one-dimensional, unrealistic dog-hating villains. Even Chuckie's family was very crude and unlikeable to Bingo for some odd reason. They were just the worst. Very annoying parents, Natalie (Cindy Williams) & Hal Devlin (David Rasche) were. All they do is fight and yelled. The brother of Chuck, Chickie (David French) is nearly a borderline psychopath, because of it. I really don't think, Bingo should even reunited with Chuckie, just for that reason, along. God knows, what Chuckie's evil family, would do; once they get hold on him. As a spoof, in which, I believe, this film was going for. It's a lot better than, let's say, the 2005's film, 'Karate Dog', but not as good as '2001's Cats Vs Dogs'. While, the movie does have some funny low blow dark humor; sadly most of it, didn't hit my funny bone. I laugh more at the cheap awful visual effects in the film like puppet paws, more than the film jokes, itself. Still, it was nice to see Bingo, being able to telephone 911, know Morse code, drive a truck, do math, and even stop a bomb from exploding. I found the far-fetched nature of Bingo's actions to be, kinda funny. I also, like the female dog that portraying the very male, Bingo. I found her to be very cute, friendly and well-trained. Other things, that I kinda like, about the film is the theme song by Robert Gibbs. Its sound, very similar to 'Way Out There' by Carter Burwell, from 1987's Raising Arizona. It's somewhat catchy. Still, overall, this film seems to have missed its mark. Not only did it, not gain its intended target, overtime, but it's still being overshadow, by better animal related comedies. It's a long forgotten comedy that probably deserve that title. In other words: dog crap.

I loved the movie, but... the scene of the abandoned warehouse fire disturbed me.
fortizlemus21 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Although I saw that movie three times between September 2007, December 2008 on the Jetix channel and June 2010 on Disney XD and in January 2021 on Cinemax (because I live in Mexico) and in August 2021 on YouTube, I loved the film, especially the genre, the performances of actors like Cindy Williams. The scene of the persecution of the kidnappers and the police I liked, but the scene of the fire in the abandoned warehouse disturbed me 51.5%.

The scene appears where the kidnappers Lenny and Eli leave the abandoned warehouse, but Eli threatened Bingo and Chuckie with blowing up the place to incineration before setting the fire in the place (without realizing that the cigarette was lit and this caused it to be will burn everywhere). The scene where Bingo tried to untie Chuckie's hands to easily escape from the abandoned warehouse (then Bingo couldn't, because Chuckie's hands were tight and it's hard to break the ropes, well, he did break the rope a little bit) It was really painful, to such a degree that I felt pain in my hands.

The scene of the explosion where Bingo brought the suitcase with the bomb installed surprised me, but I laughed when Natalie, Chuckie's mother fainted with a surprised face when she saw the explosion where Bingo brought the bomb.

Very good movie, but I did not like the additional scenes that were disturbing and painful. Do not judge me, I myself analyzed since 2007.

One of my all time favorites
orlando_bird_green15 March 2006
I've loved this movie since I was 6 years old. I found it pretty amazing that one dog walked a long journey from Colorado to Wisconsin and did not get hit by a car. He did have several mishaps along the way of finding Chuckie and his family. The saddest part of the movie is in the scene when Bingo has to jump through that ring of fire during the circus show and seeing the fire reminds him of when he was a puppy and the pet store he was born in caught on fire and his mother was lying halfway out of a cage dead. And the next scene in Bingo's recollection where he was sitting in front of his mother's memorial fountain that read: "TAFFY- Beloved Mother" made it even more sad.I almost cried.

The rest of the movie was very funny. I thought it was really cool during that hospital scene in the last 10 minutes of the film where every single person bingo met on his journey came together to visit him and wish him well. I'm 20 and I STILL love this movie

The PG rating is abused by this one. It Should be PG-13
mmacrunnel17 September 2001
The language and obscene gestures used through out the movie, do not make this one suitable for children under the age of 13.

It starts when the main character meets Bingo with delightful screams of "HOLY SH__!" and screaming matches calling each other "Chicken SH__!" as well as the Parents bickering like 10 year-olds and giving each other the finger when they turn their backs.

Some of the humor is suitable for young adults and adults but small children should not see this one.

As an adult I found the language offensive and it did not add to the movie's value one bit.

A really confusing film
DankoLedesma24 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I watched it constantly in 2016 while on the DXD channel and found it confusing. Also, additional scenes are inappropriate such as; first the kidnappers threaten to kill Bingo by pointing a gun at his head, second Chuckie fainted after visiting the trail, third the scene of the fire in the abandoned industrial warehouse where Bingo tried to untie Chuckie's hands it was very difficult to say, also Chuckie after inhaling smoke in the fire is unconscious, and the last the detonation of the bomb where Bingo brought the suitcase with the bomb installed to carry as far as possible were very strong.

It was supposed to be a movie rated PG-13 for having strong scenes and it should not have been rated for all audiences, if the movie would be PG-13 in the US and B in Mexico it would be fine, but no; it is the opposite, it is rated by PG in the U. S. and A in Mexico. It is not a film for children, because the scenes are very strong as well as bad. What a confusing film.

This movie sucks!!
chiibiprincess22 December 2009
Okay.....I can't believe people are brain-dead enough to actually LIKE this piece of dog poo. I saw it as a child and it insulted my intelligence like no movie ever has. It's so bad it SHOULD get no stars. Not even the cute dog saves it. The dog gets drunk. HE ACTUALLY GETS DRUNK. He "saves" a boy...from drowning in AN INCH OF WATER. May I bang my head on a wall now? No, that's right, I've gotta stay for the most touching part of all: the boy and dog get separated and the dog TRACKS THE BOY BY SNIFFING EVERY PLACE THE BOY HAS URINATED AT TRUCK STOPS. WHICH, I MIGHT ADD, IS ACTUALLY SHOWN. Isn't that oh so charming and cute? Even if it's SUPPOSED to be a parody of child+dog films, it doesn't work. It's not cute. It's not funny. It's atrocious and stupid with atrocious and stupid scenes. The actors are also so bad that you'd swear it was a sketch from All That except THOSE sketches actually are amusing at times. The "special" effects look like they had a ten-dollar budget. Bottom line: DON'T WATCH THIS. Don't watch it even if you love dogs or kids or dogs and kids. It's bad bad bad. Not so bad it's good-just so bad like "Can I kill myself now?" Don't even make your dog watch it. This is the WORST kid and dog movie ever made. And it's definitely NOT appropriate for children.

Just ridiculous enough, fun for kids.
laurelhardy-122688 June 2021
Bought this for the kids a very long time ago. Anyway, I didn't know what to expect; maybe a Lassie Come Home" type storyline.

Wow was I wrong. Bingo is a joker, and...., he knows mathematics, saves a kid's life (via Chest pumps no less), is in / runs away from a circus, gets the female dog next door drunk and takes advantage of her, frees caged dogs from an evil restaurant owner using them as hamburger, gets involved with the two (of course not so bright) bad guys, testifies under oath in court, gets convicted, escapes from prison, and so many more outlandish/ridiculously corny exploits I will not detail here.

Love Cindy Williams and David (don't call me Sledge Hammer), Rasche, as a funny, not so talented NFL field goal kicker.

A movie like this is for fun only. And it's so ridiculous, it's like Slapstick: The timing has to be right and ya gotta go all the way. And by and large, it is, and they did.

I gave this 7 stars because it made me laugh out loud so many times. And I'm an old guy too. I took this movie with us on a ski trip to show it to my buddy, also an old guy, just to get his take on it. He laughed out loud several times as well. Good enough. Expensive comedies can't do that.

The movie really starts when Dad again gets traded, and they have to relocate to a different city. His son has adopted (and his hiding) bingo without his (or anybody else's) knowledge, because dad hates animals; especially dogs.

They leave without Bingo, and the Incredible Journey begins. Incredibly ridiculous that is.

Will Bingo find his owner??

It's hard to describe just how bad this movie is! Let's put it this way, my girlfriend and now wife both love dogs. We both love movies. We both hated Bingo! It is easily the worst movie I have ever seen. We walked out after 30 minutes and got our money back.

A pretty good comedy.
Hey_Sweden9 February 2014
Yeah, the 1991 family film "Bingo" may be stupid, over the top, and completely fanciful, but the whole point is that it's basically a spoof of the entire "boy and his dog" genre, which was ripe enough for parody. It creates some effective laugh out loud moments while managing to never go overboard in terms of cuteness or sappiness, and keeping a fairly skewed sensibility. However, parents may want to check it out for themselves before watching it with their youngest children, as there are scenes that may be upsetting (it's not *that* family friendly). Still, there are some very bright moments and the cast is good, especially the wonderful female mongrel in the title role - a truly talented canine found in a shelter - trained by animal specialist Boone Narr.

Bingo is a dog who's run away from a circus and who comes into the life of a boy named Chuckie (the appealing Robert J. Steinmiller, Jr.). They become good friends, but Chuckie can't bring the dog into his home because his father, Hal (David Rasche), a place kicker for the Denver Broncos, dislikes animals. Wouldn't you know it: Hal gets traded from Denver to Green Bay, and the family must quickly move away, forcing Chuckie to leave the dog behind. Bingo then embarks on a series of silly misadventures while tracking the Devlin family cross country, incurring the wrath of two felons on the loose, Lennie (Kurt Fuller), and Eli (Joe Guzaldo).

This actually gets a little intense at times, such as any scene involving fire, and the whole sequence with the diner is likely going to bother some people (not just kids). But there's enough engagingly loopy comedy to counteract any bad taste that might be generated. Among other things, Bingo brings champagne to a hot-to-trot cocker spaniel, is made to walk a straight line by a traffic cop, takes the witness stand in a courtroom, and goes to a prison - a human prison. Cindy Williams and Rasche are fine as the parents, Fuller and Guzaldo appropriately scummy as the criminal duo, and the cast features other familiar faces such as Glenn Shadix, Janet Wright, Wayne Robson, and Suzie Plakson. Director Matthew Robbins ("Dragonslayer", "The Legend of Billie Jean", "*batteries not included") keeps the pace consistent and brings things to a lively finish; Jim Strains' script closes the movie on a hysterical final joke.

Fun stuff overall.

A bizarre and unreliable movie, such bad acting and silly story!
brassduke7 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
What's the point in getting away with a film that an imbecile could love? Ever since i first saw this film, i was determined to see it as a sturdy movie that did'nt have bad acting and a weak-arse ending. I Know it's a cliché but i reliably think this film is too much for me to handle, and i agree with it having a 4.1. And When it comes to 'Circus Dogs' i just know that a few severe reviewers could recommend this to lose such an idiotic budget that could make this film forbidden, I Eagerly want this film to be more significant in future. Buy the way, I'm talking uber randomness so i could fit this all in the text-box! BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH!

An absolute hoot.
jack.hunter4 March 2002
Normally I am not much for any movie that features an animal and as a result I avoided watching this movie as long as I could. However, since my grand daughter and my wife watched it over and over for months it was inevitable that I would be exposed to it. What a joy. To my surprise it was a parody, and a clever one at that. Once I realized the film was a spoof and being played for laughs I couldn't stop laughing. The well written script and hilarious sight gags make this fun for adults and children. However, I do have one complaint about the writing. Why was the limited profanity in the script? It adds nothing to the movie and worst of all is not funny. I can't believe that a guy like me who likes "Pulp Fiction" would be making this complaint, but without the needless profanity this is a perfect family movie. Profanity aside "Bingo" is a hoot.

Walked out of this movie in theaters...when I was 4
pavloviant31 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Marketed as a PG family movie, the kid swears and him and his brother flip each other the bird. That's to say nothing of the numerous threats and attempts of shootings, and weird hostage situation(s).

There is a scene in this movie where a guy is serving stray dogs as hot dogs at a roadside stand. I don't think there is a child, to whom this movie was exclusively marketed, alive that would find this enjoyable and not upsetting.

Overall the plot is very standard fare: abused circus animal is forced to run away when its owner tries to shoot it. He meets up with an outcast child who's brother goads him into jumping his bike across a river which leaves him face down in a river with an open head-wound. Luckily the dog is able to pull him out, perform CPR and then strip him naked to prevent hypothermia, despite being in a locale where everybody's breath is visible when they speak.

This leads to the kid trying to hide the dog from him family, which could not be less concerned with his 24 hour absence and visible head-wound upon his eventual return. There's no real comedy here despite going through the movements of setting up would-be gags.

Two thumbs up, and a wagging tail.
alien_lover4722 May 2004
I know a lot of people on here gave this movie a bad review, but when I read those the only words going through my head are "What the f**k???" Geez, people. Don't you get it? The point of this movie is to be a spoof of all the other lame ones, but to be enjoyable because it's not really one of those at all. I mean, it is (but only because it's spoofing...SPOOF-ING!), but it has a good sense of humor and tone to it. I couldn't get enough of the dog. I taped it back in...probably 6th grade, and I'm planning on watching it tonight!!! I really enjoy this movie because, who can't love a dog with such a human-like character to him? Hmm??? And the people he meets along the way too, haha. It's great. It's a great comedy, I love the part where the crooks are trapped by the police and they realize all the hostages are gone, so they look at Bingo and in the next scene they grab the dog and say "one move and the dog gets it!"...well, it's funnier in the movie. But it's definitely worth the watch. I mean, if you keep an open mind and don't act like the rest of these dufuses who probably started the movie with a negative response and kept with it not even WANTING to enjoy it. Geez, give it a chance. And even if you don't like it, I think it was worth the experience. Either way there are funny parts in the movie. Has Lassie ever gone to jail? Has Willy ever been to a place where they serve killer whale meat on the menu?????? Well, have they?! No. So watch it because it's a SPOOF, not just "another" one of those movies. It's great for everyone...except for angry men, and bitchy women.

Cute movie about a very special friendship between a boy and a dog
Catherine_Grace_Zeh17 January 2006
BINGO, in my opinion, is a cute movie about a very special friendship between a boy and a dog. I thought that Hal and Natalie (David Rasche and Cindy Williams) were a little cold-hearted, but Chuckie (Robert J. Steinmilller Jr.) was a very sweet kid. Bingo was a sweet dog, though. He even saved Chuckie in times of trouble. Way to go, Bingo! If you ask me, that's one thing that made the bond between them so special. When Bingo was trying to catch up to Chuckie during his cross-country movie, I felt really moved inside. In conclusion, I highly recommend this movie to all you dog lovers or Cindy Williams fans who have not seen it.

Lassie could take lessons from this mutt
helpless_dancer2 October 2001
This cur has a better command of the english language than some folks I know. There was no problem he came across that was insurmountable: the pup was a plain canine genius. A kid's film all the way because, although I like smart animal shows, this was just too, too lame for an adult to sit through without some serious squirming.

For Dog Lovers of all Ages!
trixie-k-8829 January 2012
Bingo is a great kids' movie, especially for kids that love dogs. I loved it so much as a child that I named one of my dogs Bingo.

Bingo is an adorable mutt who lives with a circus. After his fear of fire messes up a circus act he is thrown out of the circus and runs off to the woods. While there he finds a lonely boy named Chuckie, who fell off his bike and passed out. Chuckie sneaks his new friend home and they have all sorts of fun, skateboarding, playing video games, and even doing homework. But Chuckie can't keep Bingo a secret from his family for long, and Bingo is left behind when Chuckie's family moves across the country. Bingo then makes it his mission to follow and find Chuckie. Along the way he encounters good guys, bad guys and…weird guys as he tries to find his best friend and save the day!

Bingo is corny. It's nothing new. But it's cute, it's charming, and it's entertaining for kids. Along with that, it's not so childish that parents will want to destroy the DVD. I even find myself enjoying it as an adult. It's definitely better than most children's movies made now (like the "Buddies" series), so give it a look.

Sort of a lame modernized throwback to the old Rin-Tin-Tin and Lassie films
soranno30 October 2002
"Bingo" is at times comparable to just about every other "boy and his heroic dog" film ever made. Its only problem is that it doesn't do the genre right. There are more absurd moments of Bingo's comic mischief than actual adventure throughout the film. Children under eight years old should really enjoy this but there is a huge chance that anybody older than that might snooze.

Pretty good for a kids movie
frisky224074 January 2004
With 3 kids (now 16, 13, 11) I have seen a lot of kids movies over the years, this one is pretty funny! Even though my kids are getting older they still enjoy watching this movie, and I do too. The dog is so cute and trained so well that you can't help but root for him.

If you haven't watched this one yet, I recommend it for a fun family movie evening. Not only is it funny, it doesn't have all those annoying songs that your kids will sing for weeks on end!

zzapper-224 May 1999
My kids watch Bingo, wall to wall, So I've it seen a few times, it's really quite witty. Everyone plays very well. Even though its from Disney there's no Syrup.

I don't know why so many people gave this low votes, perhaps they never realised it was being played for laughs!

A very fun, cute and memorable film about a boy & his dog!
John-Woo3 April 2011
This movie is a fun and in ways, an over the top animal film that stays out of the box. As far as animal movies go, this one is a little different. It's a little crazy and cartoony but it adds to it's charm. Filled with left side humor and jokes that many kids may not get but will enjoy nevertheless due to the cuteness and charm that comes from Bingo the dog himself. Without spoiling anything its an adventure where the boy and his dog get separated... His dog tries his best to track down his friend with which the movie presents most of it's fun and charm with all the crazy adventures Bingos gets up to along the way. Just have a heart, let down your 'tough guy' guard and rent this movie for a cute adventure and enjoy a fun ride the whole family can enjoy (the language is a little strong for the little ones in a couple of parts though. Its suggest parental guidance if they are under 10.) If you can do that, you and your family will definitely enjoy this movie.

Bingo the dog is funny!
christian-56-22083429 July 2014
This movie is a great feel-good movie.

Bingo the dog is particularly funny.

The dog is as good as Lassie or any other acting dog!

The dog probably deserves an Oscar!

The beginning of the film starts pretty quickly, which is goods as the plot gets going straight away.

Bingo the dog keeps you entertained throughout until the middle of the movie when the other characters begin to take affect.

It would be funny to see the dog play bingo online or mobile bingo, but alas he just generally does tricks, and acts a bit like a human dog would.

This is a great kids movie, particularly for anyone that owns a dog.

For anyone that likes to play bingo, then this film is not for you, as it has nobody playing online bingo, mobile bingo - or even going down to their local hall to play.

We recommend this Bingo film, as much to see the funny dog as anything!

The Emperor's New Dog
cyberknight3 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
There is a story about an emperor that got new clothes, magical ones, which were said to be invisible to stupid people. The thing is, there were no clothes, so no one could see anything but a naked man. For fear of the others thinking they were stupid, no one said they couldn't see anything.

Well, this film is somewhat like that tale, but the new clothes do actually exist, visible in plain sight, but stupid people cannot see them!

In the beginning of the film, we have a boy dreaming. The camera work is bizarre and the action flows weirdly. The viewer is taught what a dream looks like in this film.

Then the protagonist appears. Obviously, he's so much smarter than any human in the film. He's not perfect, but, then again, a hero without flaws is boring. We got to see him evolving and becoming exceptional.

Many things happen and, nearing the end, the canine hero has a though mission, save his boy from a bomb about to explode. He manages to pick the bomb and run off camera. A moment later, we hear an explosion, and nothing else.

Immediately after that, we get another dream sequence. All characters in the film show up there, even the villains, cheering up happily the boy and the hero dog, who is finally shown, covered in bandages, but we can see he's got only minor scrapes... The end... Credits row...

How many films have you seen with multiple endings overlapping? I'm not talking about films like "Upstream Color" (2013), which has no ending (or plot, for that matter), leaving all interpretations to the viewer. What I'm talking about are films with unambiguously simultaneously different endings, depending on perception of details by the viewer, like "Blade Runner" (1982), "The Thirteenth Floor" (1999), and "The Matrix" series (1999, 2003).

"Bingo" may not appeal to all, for several reasons (I know how badly non-human actors may be treated off camera, like Flipper or Keiko, or even off stage, like all marine mammals at Sea World), but as far as this genre of film goes, it's by far the best, not only criticising the genre itself, but doing it in a cinematographically interesting way, giving something for both little children that see a perfectly happy ending, and adults, that see the gloomy side of hero work.

Avoid Stupid Pet Tricks.
tfrizzell6 July 2002
A film that is just thrown together to make a few quick bucks from parents of very young children who don't realize how awful it is. The adventures of a dog are followed in this tedious film-watching experience. Terrible acting does nothing to advance the story that feels like it was thrown together by toddlers after watching an episode of "The Teletubbies". Full of fleas. Turkey (0 stars out of 5).
