First off, let me give full credit where it is due for that headline - I first heard the genius title mashup "The Diary of Anne Frankenstein" in gay horror director Joshua Grannell's (aka Peaches Christ) wonderfully demented horror comedy All About Evil. (It also later appeared in the anthology flick Chillerama.) But I'm delighted that American Horror Story gave me the perfect opportunity to use it. Martyred Jewish teenagers and mad scientists - they go together like chocolate and peanut butter! ("You've got your martyred Jewish teen in my mad scientist!" "No, you've got your mad scientist in my martyred Jewish teen!")
Anyway, for once we don't start an episode with Jenna Dewan Tatum squawking to raise the dead and Adam Levine using his remaining arm to text his agent for a way the hell out of what was supposed to be a 5-minute cameo, and Thank God For That.

Disney began production today on “Saving Mr. Banks,” the account of Walt Disney’s twenty-year pursuit of the film rights to P.L. Travers’ popular novel, Mary Poppins, and the testy partnership the upbeat filmmaker develops with the uptight author during the project’s pre-production in 1961.
Two-time Academy Award®-winner Tom Hanks (“Philadelphia,” “Forrest Gump”) will essay the role of the legendary Disney (the first time the entrepreneur has ever been depicted in a dramatic film) alongside fellow double Oscar®-winner Emma Thompson (“Howard’s End,” “Sense and Sensibility”) in the role of the prickly novelist. Before actually signing away the book’s rights, Travers’ demands for contractual script and character control circumvent not only Disney’s vision for the film adaptation, but also those of the creative team of screenwriter Don DaGradi and sibling composers Richard and Robert Sherman, whose original score and song (Chim-Chim-Cher-ee) would go on to win...

The multi-million dollar tale about about Eddie and Bonita Mabo (played by Jimi Bani and Deborah Mailman), and the fight for indigenous land rights, was directed by Rachel Perkins (Bran Nue Dae, First Australians) and written by Sue Smith (Bastard Boys, Brides of Christ).
Other recent indigenous films screened on the ABC have fared better including Perkins's Bran Nue Dae, which averaged 720,000 viewers in January last year, according to The Australian, while Warwick Thornton's Samson and Delilah was seen by about 1 million viewers when it first aired in 2010. For every Gus Van Sant, Kelly Reichardt and Todd Haynes, each of them residing in Portland, there’s several dozens of other virtually unknown filmmakers working around the fringes in Oregon. It’s a state with a strong, if still burgeoning, independent film scene. This writer, still relatively fresh to the area (not quite two years an inhabitant), has yet to see a locally produced narrative film (not including any from the aforementioned names of course) that’s stood out from a relatively crowded pack. Most tend to follow the modern indie format of 20 or 30-something malaise or “Portlandia”-esque hipster satire, to varying degrees of success. With “How the Fire Fell,” an abstract, minimalist portrait of the true events surrounding the Brides of Christ religious cult, director Edward P. Davee has debuted with a strong first effort that’s a breath of fresh air. The film shows promise for Davee,...

The Australian Writers’ Foundation is calling for nominations for their annual Foxtel Fellowship. Worth $25,000, the Fellowship welcomes nominations of screenwriters who have a proven track record in television writing. Its aim is to allow the recipient to further explore the craft, scope and impact in a particular project of their choosing.
Now in its 5th year, the fellowship was last year awarded to Sue Smith whose work includes The Leaving of Liverpool, Brides of Christ, R.A.N Remote Area Nurse, My Brother Jack, Fallen Angels and The Cooks.
Of receiving the fellowship, Smith said, “The Foxtel Fellowship has allowed me to let my imagination travel into the kind of tricky or confronting territory that I may have felt constrained about under other circumstances.”
Screenwriters may nominate themselves but the Awf also encourages third party nominations. The fellow will be announced at the 44th Annual Awgie Awards in September.

Producer Penny Chapman likes to keep busy. The fruit of her diligence is a prolific, 25-year career in film and television that includes the likes of Brides of Christ, Blue Murder, Ran: Remote Area Nurse and the AFI Award-nominated children.s drama My Place. .A lot of them looked at our cultural history, and tell us something really intriguing about it,.
